Safari Zone Quest: Blademaster
Part 4



It's war. A group of eerie balloon-like Pokemon Drifloon and Drifblim gently glide across the sky as the darkness enters the arena.

Houndoom leaps at Mightyena and delivers a scorching tackle. A group of Poochyena blast attacks into the leading Houndoom as Houndour soon scurry on to fight them off. Houndour fires a scorching blast that smashes into a young Mightyena, hurling it across the harsh wasteland.

Nearby, you can see a shadowy figure standing atop a rock formation. With a long howl, the fighting Pokemon stop and look. You also have a look as the Pokemon leaps up and unleashes a long blade of energy. The blade slices between the Houndoom and Mightyena, prising them apart and keeping them in place like some sort of shield.

The Pokemon reveals itself to be an Absol. The warring Pokemon slink off. The Absol walks softly around the arena, looking at the shed fur, the blood and the scorched earth of this perhaps sacred place.

Alas, the ABsol darts off suddenly, leaping to a rocky ledge. It then slowly walks around a corner of a small rock formation. You see a Glameow nearby carrying something small and precious in a velvet drawstring bag. Looking gleeful, the Glameow struts along the desserted wasteland.

What will you do?

You travel up the mountain. You can hear an odd dripping noise to your left in the solid rock face. Other than that, you see a Leafeon perched upon a ledge above you, and a Drapion clicking it's claws together on a ledge below.

You purse the pesky pest. You and your two Pokemon scramble over brush and between trees as the speedy Pokemon darts ahead. You spot a Turtwig and a Stantler as your run, as well as a Dustox. Suddenly, you trip over a root and hit the ground hard. Your knee is scraped and blood is pouring out. Ninjask stops in midair, and turns around, looking down at you with a cocked head.

We've found what we want, guys. Forget about that ugly cat and its treasure - we follow that Absol. Valentina, Teleport us up to that ledge. Then, Valentina, you go ahead and try to talk to that Absol - we mean it no harm; we want to ask it to join our team. Be as diplomatic as you can - I doubt that Absol wants to fight any more than we do.

Part 5



As the Glameow dissapears, you pursue Absol, teleporting to the rocky ledge. Here, you can see all across the desserted wasteland of Grave's Yard. You follow Absol, sending Kirlia to stop the Pokemon. Kirlia walks up and talks in Pokemon. Absol watches her. Kirlia communicates what Absol is saying to you through telepathy:

My trainer and I are here to meet you. We want to know if you would join our team.

I am not a member of any team.

Perhaps you are now...but if you join us you can train with us, grow with us and achieve great things.

I can do all of that on my own. Now leave me.

No. I have been entrusted with talking to you.

I'm done talking.

Absol deals a swift heavy tackle into Kirlia, knocking her back.

If you want me, you have to capture me.

Absol turns and walks off around the rocky ledge.

What will you do?

I won't tolerate that kind of attitude from a future member of our team. Valentina, hang back - Rawk Hawk, you're up.

Chase after that arrogant mongrel and slam it with a Sky Uppercut. Then use a Flamethrower, and end with a Double Kick.

You decide to examine the peculiar dripping noise. As you approach the rock face, you notice some sort of footprints heading in the direction of the sound. The footprints stop right at the blank rock face. You notice that there is water leaking out the side of the rock, and it is trickling down onto the ground in a small puddle.

You instantly attack the Turtwig with a thunder wave before it can react. Obviously young and inexperienced, it tries to flee, but stumbles over itself. Menacing Talut glides over and flies straight up into the air like an arrow, swooping down with glistening wings. A massive cloud of smoke and dirt erupts from below turtwig before Talut has touched ground, and the small Pokemon goes flying head over heels into a pile of dried leaves. It whimpers. Horatio scowls, and does nothing.

You have persephone phase through the wall to examine what's inside. You wait a few minutes, and Misdreavus plops back out. Apparently, the rock face here is very thin, and there is a large pool of water on the other side. Above the water is a tall cathedral-like cavern.

Part 6



Combusken wastes no time and races along the arena at the Absol. She sees Combusken just as he slices up, delivering a powerful uppercut and punching Absol hard. She slashes a blade of energy down into Combusken, who lands and retalliates with a blast of scorching flame. Absol is struck head on and skids back, shaking her mane from dancing embers that perish in the winds. Blade glowing white she slashes off a fantastic racing wind that speeds into Combusken and deals good damage. Combusken then charges, leaping up and spinning into a double kick. Absol is kicked twice in sucession and staggers, but not before unleashing a psycho cut - the glowing pink slashing attack causes great pain for Combusken, who staggers back in shock.

Ok, Set release your Hyperbeam now and blast that rock face to smithereens! Then, we'll step inside and see what happens. Be on your guard.

You command your beedrill to launch a hyperbeam into the rock face. With a nod of it's head, Beedrill sends a massive white beam of energy spiraling into the mountain, and a cloud of smoke erupts from the wall. Beedrill backs off, gasping for air, as you and Misdreavus stare through the smoke, waiting. Soon, you can hear something big approaching. You leap aside, as gallons of water pour out the gap, tumbling down the side of the mountain, knocking Drapion off its perch. A few magikarp are sent skyrocketing through the air. After a minute, the flow stops, and you look inside. It's dark, but it seems to be a huge hollowed out cavern, filled with mud.

You command your Dragonite to make the day sunny, and he saw that it was good. Then, Horatio sends a spiral of flames into the little Turtwig, encompassing it in a deadly sphere of fire. It makes a leap to escape, but is thrown back by the spinning wheel of doom. Then, to make things worse, Talut flaps its wings steadily, making the spiral of flames into a huge tornado. After a few minutes, the fire dies down, and a charred turtwig is lying on the ground shaking. You toss your great ball at the Pokemon and it is sucked in with a flash of light. It shakes. Once, twice. Thrice! Gotcha! Turtwig was caught! Turtwig's data was added to the Pokedex. Give a nickname to the captured Turtwig? While you enjoy your victory, Growlithe anxiously barks from behind your back. You finally turn around, to see that the fire spin had caught onto a few nearby trees, and there was a blazing fire now!

I'll think of a name later. BTW, I'm down to one great ball now. Not good. I'll have Talut use rain dance now. Then i'll have him use water pulse to try and put the fire out. I'll also have Horatio mimic the water pulse and help put out the fire. Once it is out, we will head for the Grave’s Yard.

You enter the cave warily, as Persephone fills the chamber with a flash of yellow light. The room is empty, save a few pits of water remaining on what was once the bed of a small pond. Up on the wall, you notice a distraught-looking Gastrodon, inching its way across the room. There is a Raticate lapping up muddy water from a small pit, but there isn't much left. A snorunt is also fighting a Piplup off to one side. But what really attracts your attention is a huge Rhyperior approaching you, carrying some sort of green object -- and it looks angry.

Talut instantly does a jig and it begins to pour. The flames crackle and sizzle. Then, you command both your pokemon to use water pulse, Growlithe mimicking Talut. The water spews out over the flames, dousing them completely. You sigh, glad you didn't give it a chance to grow bigger. Then, KA-ZAM! You teleport to Grave's Yard. You are surrounded by a series of dead trees, illuminated by the moon, perched alone in the eerie night sky. In front of you is a ravaged meadow, covered in gravestones, one after another. Oddly enough, no Pokemon are around other than a frightened-looking Shuppet staring at you.

What will you do?

Ok, the green object it is. Missy, Meanlook, then confuse Ray, then Snatch that green thing out of his hands. Set use Toxic spikes so that it remains on the same spot, or atleast hurts him if he tries to move, then use Flash and blind him, finish with Brickbreak after Missy snatched the thing and blow him away.

You act quickly commanding your Misdreavus to give that Rhyperior a mean look. It continues to charge. Then, you have your ghostly assistant send a yellow orb of energy flying at the Rhyperior. It suddenly goes crosseyed, and stumbles over itself, looking down at the ground dumbfoundedly. Persephone takes her chances and leaps in, grabbing the green object out of the Rhyperior's grasp. Turns out the green object was merely a T-shirt. Disappointed, you have your Beedrill trap the ground pokemon with a series of toxic spikes scattered around it, and then you have Set use flash to blind the creton. It whines and trips back onto some of the spikes. Set swoops in and finishes with a brick break, knocking the big Pokemon into a wall. Then, suddenly, you hear a voice shout out, "Rhyperior, leave them alone! Just rest!" The huge pokemon hesitates, but collapses into a sitting position and falls asleep. The voice seemed to be coming from the other side of the room.

Paralyzed, cut and miserable, Ivy valiantly keeps up his attack! A flurry of leave spin at the fire pup but Cujo and his copy never let them meet their mark. The true Cujo release a massive flame, shaping into a 5 point kanji. The Fire Blast decimates the pitiful leaves and smashes into Ivysaur for a fantastic explosion.

As the smoke settle you walk out pitch your great ball over-hand style to tap the smoking plant. The red light glares at you and the ball bounces with excitement but the "ping" of capture rings forth and your proudly stroke your pup.

You pokeball is instantly teleported to the main build of the Zone and with no other balls a Fearow swoops down to transport you back, safe and sound.

Alright... we definately don't want to be messing with that Flygon guys, neither of you is a good match for it. Lets exit, stage away from the Flygon. Hopefully the little guy won't stray too far from his mother and will then leave us alone, but even if he does pursue Trapinch are pretty slow, so we ought to be able to keep pace ahead of him. Once we get to safety, we can resume our search for goodys and pokemon.

You run over to the opposite side of the room, and, after a minute of snooping around, Set motions for you to come over. A man is being squeezed between two tall boulders. He wheezes, "Thank god you've come. I've been here for hours. Sorry about my Rhyperior, he's a bit too precautious. What happened was, I got stuck here while exploring. Rhyperior tried to move one of the boulders, but the other started to collapse onto my ribcage. See, I need a second Pokemon to pull the other boulder at the same time, or I'll be crushed." You frown, looking down, "And the shirt?" The man explains, "Rhyperior grabbed it out of my backpack to show to anyone who might come along. So, can you help me?"

You think to yourself, "What a douchebag."

As the Trapinch approaches you quickly back away with your Pokémon, but the little bugger just keeps coming! You quickly turn tail and run down the beach, trusting in your speed to get away. No one wants an angry mother on thier tail. You look back and he has stopped chasing you, not wanting to be too far from his mom.

Sighing in relief you look around you surroundings. You spot a Sandshrew, and he spots you just as quickly. He immediately starts to dig madly at the sand, not wanting to stick around. You here a cry overhead and you spot a Wingull gliding lazily through the air. She's a bit odd though; she has a green colour on her wings and tail instead of the usual blue . . . The last Pokémon you spot is another Trapinch but she is older then the other and currently at the bottom of a pit she has dug.

Suddenly Polaron buzzes happily and you turn to see he has a Pokéball stuck to one of his magnets. You take it from him with thanks and he goes back to searching.

You carefully avoid the Trapinch trap and continue on your way. The Wingull's cries fade into the distance as you stroll down the beach. As you wandering about, Atlas gets your attention and points off into the shallows. You peer into the water and spot something heading for shore. You back away but before you get to far you trip on something and crash into the sand.

You scramble to your feet and see a mildly irritated Diglett looking at you. He shouts something at you, probably along the lines of 'watch where you're going'. He then continues on his way, not going below the surface and not in any hurry either. The shape in the ocean has reached the shore and you see it is two Quagsire and a Wooper. The two Quagsire's look at you in a bored way before heading inshore, but the Wooper is more curious. She cocks her head and makes a questioning 'Woop'. Lastly you spot a couple fishing rods leaning against a tree. Surely the owner wouldn't mind if you borrowed one . . .

Wooper, eh? Not much interest in that or a Diglett. But the fishing poles are intruiging. I'm going to grab one and cast my line out, see what I can come up with. Atlas, keep an eye out for any threats, just in case.

You turn to the tree, but the Wooper follows you. Atlas steps in the way and looks 'scary'. The Wooper squeaks and takes off after the Quagsire into the trees. You grab a blue rod and look for a nice place to cast. A large bolder is up the beach and you head for it. As you walk you notice a Wingull flying overhead, but he suddenly squawks in fear and speeds for the ocean. A Flygon soars overhead and you cover your eyes at the sand she kicks up. Actually it looks like the female from earlier . . .

She finally goes higher, riding a thermal and you feel very grateful for the clean air again. You continue on your way without too much hassle, only a couple of Diglett crossing your path. As you sit down and cast, another Wooper comes inshore and heads for the trees. She is nearly trampled though, as Ponyta speeds past. He is bucking and squealing and looking like he is quite enjoying the wonderful weather. You smile at his exuberance when you feel a tug on your line. You fight the Pokémon and reel it in; it's putting quite a decent fight. Finally as it is in the shallows it leaps into the air and you see it's a Staryu! It's another oddie though, its skin is almost grey in colour and its gem is blue.

Luck indeed, wow. Now if only I'd get a bit of that luck in Pearl and get a single bloody shiny pokemon...

Alrighty then. Not exactly what I was going for, but Staryu is cool, and shiny to boot. Polaron, you're up. We're not going to try any of that "talk to it and see if it joins" stuff. Start off by hitting it with a Charge Beam for some damage and to build up your own energy. Then smash into it with a Spark. And finally, fire off a Mirror Shot.

. . . When none of your other Reffings are going anywhere, and your stuck indoors for the most part = speedy Ref. Um the Staryu is 'her' and Polaron will be 'he'. Lol.

You grin at your luck and wave to Polaron to step up and start wackin this Pokémon. He beeps in pleasure and rushes up in front of you. You stand up and release the Staryu from the line for battle. You shout your commands to your two Polaron and Atlas go to their jobs.

Staryu wastes no time in attacking the group who has disturbed her from her search for lunch. She leaps to the shore and her centre gem glows as she squirts water from the tip of a star point. It grows into a ball and she fires it at Polaron when it is the size of him. The water ball crashes over the Magnemite. He shakes it off, but this water attack has scared off the Ponyta who was watching the battle a little too keenly.

Polaron charges electricity in his two magnets. It doesn't take long to charge and he fires, the electricity fusing into one long beam of electrical energy. It slams into the Staryu and she makes a horrible screeching sound. At the same time sparks are passing between Polaron's magnets, his Special Attack has been boosted.

The Staryu is looking a little sparkie but she bravely continues on. She aims the top point at Polaron and a thick stream of bubbles steams for him. It stings but he powers through the attack, his whole body glowing with electrical energy. He slams into the Staryu the sparks course over her body. She groans and goes down on one, uh, 'knee'. She has however managed not to get paralysed.

Now Staryu has more then enough of being shocked. She decided to show him what a electric attack really is. She starts to crackle and glow quite bright with electricity. Polaron's eye widens and he quickly charges his own attack. It takes significantly less time and he fires at the same time she does. With them so close they each go flying back by the explosion. Electricity and the steel energy go flying everywhere, with a whole lot of sand thrown in.

The Staryu slowly gets to her feet, feeling very much worse for wear. Polaron's head is still ringing as well and he slowly levitates up off the sand. The explosion has chased away most Pokémon. The only two anywhere near the battle are two Wingull but they are carefully avoiding it. There is way too much electricity flying around for them. Staryu manages to get moving just a bit sooner then Polaron and rushes at him, slamming him with a Facade. She practically bounces off his tough hide though; Polaron is merely annoyed by the attack. He quickly charges the static bound Thunderwave and shocks her. She squeaks and twitches as the attack begins affecting her motor control.

Polaron is very pleased with this but is dismayed to see the starfish get up and begin chanting. She starts to leap and bound around, and Polaron notices the storm clouds gathering over the ocean. You quickly have Atlas dig a small cove under the rock to hide in and the two of you dive in just as the rain starts. And boy does it start. Thunder rumbles ominously as the rain ours down, lightning crackling across the sky. Polaron is ok with this, though his metal half might be a downside.

He calls all the iron around the area to him, and it comes in glowing specks and pieces. It fuses into a ball and Polaron sends it flying towards Staryu. It explodes on her skin and she skids back with the force of it. Her muscles twitch but she can still manage to move and she aims the top point once again at Polaron.

It takes a few seconds but then an enormous amount of water comes gushing at Polaron. His cries become gurgles with the amount of it. Finally the deluge ends and he is very angry. His whole body glows with power and within seconds he blasts an electrical volt at her. She yelps and shouts in pain as it courses through her body. Finally it ends and both Pokémon are looking worn.
