Realizing that this Cacturne is not going to come along quietly, you quickly whip out a Pokeball and hurl it; in a flash, a fierce Blaziken emerges onto the sand, the desertlike heat seemingly not bothering it. The two humanoid Pokemon warily approach each other, like Old West gunslingers...

On your command, the two Pokemon strike - Cacturne's arm glows black as midnight as Judge What's-his-name inhales deeply, giving Cacturne ample time to zoom in and Sucker Punch the Judge in he face. The Blaziken squawks and falls back, exhaling a blast of flames that envelop the cactus.

Still close to one another, Cacturne pulls back an arm, then swings it around, slamming a Needle Arm across Judge's cheek. The Blaziken squawks in pain as the needles stick in his cheek, neck, and yes, even his eye. The Blaziken roars in pain and grabs the needle in his eye, yanking it out with a sickening sound. One eye closed, Judge puts his hands together, an orb of brown energy welling in between them before firing, slamming the Cacturne back ten feet.

The cactus gets back up and shakes his head, the diamond atop his head glowing black before firing a pulsating beam of black energy at Judge. The Fire Pokemon falls over backwards...

...But he smiles to himself - the second he strikes the ground, a sound like a dynamite blast sounds throughout the arena; the confused Cacturne looks up just in time to be crushed under a barrage of hundreds of pounds of stones. Ow...

Then, with his foe defenseless, Dratini immediately fires out a quick bolt of lightning from the sky, which strikes the faulty pokemon harshly, knocking him both to the ground and out of confusion. Riolu quickly snaps back, and fires a right hook in Dratini's face.

Dratini hits the ground, but coils back him and springs towards the riolu, wrapping tightly around the small hound pokemon, and constricting him harshly. His body, stricken with paralysis, keeps him from countering.

Your ferocious battle with the Cacturne continues here in Crush Quarry. Your Blaziken, though bleeding minorly from one eye, seems to have quite the advantage against his nemesis, he is, for all intents and purposes, helpless to fight back.

...Or is he? Judge watches the stones covering his opponent carefully, instantly assuming a battle stance as a few of them tumble and collapse... inward? Did the Cacturne underneath burrow underground, or did it just vanish...?

Judge gets his answer a split-second later when a dark, shadow-enveloped leg screams down from the sky and kicks Judge in the head. Screeching in annoyance more than pain at the sneaky Faint Attack, the firebird opens his jaws and spits out a tiny fireball, barely the size of a tennis ball. The Cacturne begins to chuckle to himself... Then, the tiny orb of fire explodes into a ten-foot firestorm in the shape of a star. The cacturne's smile vanishes; it utters what can only be the Pokemonese equivalent of "Shit..." before the flame slams into it, exploding on contact and sending the cactus flying thirty feet into the air, crashing down onto the sand with a soft thud.

Groaning in pain, the Burned Cacturne gets up, only to be slammed back down by a furious Focus Blast once again. The cactus sits up and shakes his head, waving his arms and firing a furious flurry of needles that can only be described as Pin Missiles. Judge grits his beak as one... two... three... four waves of needles embed in his skin, amplifying the pain caused by the needles already stuck there from Cacturne's earlier Needle Arm.

Judge, not willing to deal with the stinging barbs anymore, rips as many of them free in one pull as he can, and then he blasts another searing stream of flames at the Scarecrow Pokemon, burning it nearly black. Finally realizing his conventional attacks aren't effective against this intruder, he rushes Judge, arms pulled back, and then slams them both into his chest repeatedly with Brick Breaking force, finally knocking Judge to the ground. The Blaziken lays there, dazed from the feeling of having one of his own attacks turned against him...

Judge lays on the ground, his one good eye rolling - seeing an opening for an attack, the Cacturne jumps into the air, bring a thick foot down on Judge's belly. The Blaziken's eyes fly open; he wheezes as the wind is knocked out of him by that very, very Low Kick.

After a few moments, Judge gets to his feet, breathing heavily. A look of pure rage in his eyes, he inhales as deeply as he can, then blasts out a cannonball-sized orb of flame, which rapidly explodes into a twenty-foot star of fire. The Cacturne honest-to-God turns a few shades whiter as the merciless attack slams into it, exploding violently enough to send the Scarecrow Pokemon flying forty feet and slamming into the side of the canyon.

But Judge isn't satisfied yet - as fast as he can, he conjures a third orb of pure Ki in his claws as the Cacturne begins to fall; like a Kamehameha blast, he fires it, intercepting the cactus and crushing him sideways a good 3 feet into the stone wall.

Several tense seconds pass, before finally gravity overtakes the Cacturne, and he plummets to the ground 25 feet below, his face in the dirt, a small stream of green chlorophyll oozing from the corner of his mouth. He's finished.

Smiling to himself, Judge steps back as you grab the Great Ball from your pocket and expand it, then hurl it at the Cacturne. It bounces off the cactus, then opens and sucks him in in a flash of pink light, before finally flying back to your hand. The Great Ball wobbles and wiggles a bit, the pink light on its button flashing, before finally...

DING!

The Ball goes still and silent, and then it vanishes in a white light. Congratulations - Cacturne is yours.

You congratulate Judge on his victory, and he responds with a smirk and a thumbs-up (Or maybe he's just pointing up in the air - it's hard to tell on a creature with only three fingers.). You recall him and continue across the deserted desert, Inverted Duckbot floating by your side with a soft hum.

You make your way across the sand quickly, the lack of life here very abundant, until you finally reach the steep wall at the opposite end of the desert. None too keen on climbing the rocky cliffs again, you instruct Duckbot to Teleport you up to a more walk-able level.

Looking back out over the desert, you see the Skarmory from earlier has perched on a plinth about fifty feet to your left. To your right is a path devoid of too much bumpiness - there are actually a couple of hardy trees here, which are populated with Mankey and Primeape. On the ground in the shade of the trees lies a snoozing Donphan, and further up the trail, a Sandslash is digging a hole in the ground for who-knows-why.

Riolu attempts to retalliate, but his muscles aren't as willing, and he is once more struck by another set of passing flames. Riolu shrugs off the attack as Dratini charges up for his final attack. Riolu springs to action, bashing Dratini in the head with a swift punch, not realizing that Dratini had summoned a large meteor of draconic energy to fall from the sky, slamming into Riolu harshly.

Onward and upward you trek, following the path back up to the apex of the Quarry. As you go, those distant sounds of digging, rumbling, and blasting that have been echoing through the canyon the whole time begin to steadily grow louder. The trail begins to widen and even out and the sounds grow ever louder, until you finally arrive on steady ground... but something is familiar about this place... Wait, isn't that Chris Rock off in the distance...?

Why, yes, yes it is! That can only mean that you are at the opposite end of the plateau of rock formations that lay dead ahead of where you started from. Up close, the massive rock formations seem far more intimidating, and the construction zone sounds are much, much closer. You peek around the nearest rock formation, looking for the source of the noise...

Drilling into a great stone column before you is a pair of Rhydon, their horns cutting through the dense limestone like it were chalk. Manning the next rock formation is a burly Machoke, who is setting several Geodude around the rocks. The Machoke backs away and barks a hearty command, and the Geodude use Explosion, their dynamite blasts blowing massive chunks of rock apart, revealing chunks of shiny rock underneath...

Leafeon rises with a soft growl, all timid actions gone. With a swish of her tail she releases 3 spinning leafs to slice at Yana but she stands her ground unafraid. He body suddenly flickers and phases from our plain of reality causing the leaves to hit only air. Shock is painted on the foxes face but that it replace with pain as Yana reappears and headbutts her with her horns.

Slightly dazed by the increasing power of the poison the Leafeon is over taken by the swift canine that now sports inky black teeth the sink in her side. As Yana bites down as hard as she can flames erupt from her mouth adding extra damage to the torn flesh. Yana shakes the fox like a rag doll and throw her way like nothing…

Dratini's wound quakes as he dances around majestically, gathering strength and speed as he circles about. Riolu, however, takes this opportunity and charges to the none-the-wiser dratini and punches him hardly in the nose, knocking the slithery dragon pokemon to the ground.

Dratini, feeling powerful, and slightly woozy, leaps headstrongly into the fighting pokemon; they both hit the ground forcefully, tumbling around hurtfully. Dratini then instantly slams his tail, now soaked with metallic energy, into Riolu's face for great damage. Riolu cries out before crashing his fist into Dratini's face once more, with an iron fist similar to Dratini's tail.

Yana growls sinisterly at her slowly weakening foe and proceeds to surround her with copies. The clones all bark and snarl to confuse and scare Leafeon who hobbles from her injury.

Seeing an opening, Yana raises her Sp. Atk by channeling all her dark powers into in extremely nasty plot against Leafeon. The fox tries to figure out the real Yana by firing Bullet seeds in random direction. But she only manages to take out 2 clone, leaving 3 behind. As the black energy dissipates Yana glows with an aura of purest night.

A sudden idea perks up the grass type. Her eyes glows a brilliant forest green and from the ground blades of grass tie off into knots, wrapping around the clones and the true Yana’s paws. The copies vanish leaving Yana who while slightly annoyed by the bindings. Not needing to move anyway to attack she sprays a massive tongue of flames that send Leafeon reeling.

Wasting no opportunity, you quickly hurl your lone poke ball, slapping the dazed riolu in the stomache before sucking him in.

The ball shakes once, twice, three times, then not at all as a clicking sound locks him in place.

You yawn, bored, as you look around the Quarry one more time before asking your Porygon2 to Teleport you to the Old Village. The holographic Pokemon pauses, then picks up a shiny green stone shaped like a cliche ice-cream-cone-shaped gem. Every color on and around you both flips to its negative as time seems to stop, your Porygon2 remaining unaffected and uttering two words:

"CHAOS... CONTROL!"

With a zipping sound, the two of you glow white and warp out of existence, reappearing a second later in a ghost town of some kind. Every building on every side of you is dilapidated, deserted, and demolished, and the street and sidewalk are in pretty sucky shape, too. This place actually looks like the ghost town from The Hills Have Eyes, except as far as you can see, there are no flesh-eating old men or disgruntled mutants in neck-braces wandering around. Glancing over your shoulder sporadically, you begin to walk slowly down the street...

Not much activity here... You can see a sleeping Gulpin through a dirty, broken window in one of the buildings, and a few Glameow are scampering around in front of an old refinery of some sort. An Ambipom is swinging from a flagpole overhead, and a Pachirisu is sitting on a window ledge not too far away, the inside of the window behind it flickering randomly...

"OK, Chris," your useless guide says as he pockets your eight points and leads you outside the Safari Zone HQ, "you set this place up; you know the routine. Catch Pokemon, look around, blah blah blah, whatever. Meanwhile, I just got a copy of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon for the Wii, so I'm gonna go screw off and play with that while you wander around and get heatstroke. Later!"

With that, your guide hands you 2 Ultra Balls, then turns and walks back inside; the Mortal Kombat theme is instantly heard blaring through the windows, accompanied by a "BLADE, TURN THAT DAMN MUSIC OFF!!" from Hypotenuse Man a few seconds later.

Shaking your head, you turn and walk down the path rowards the Sunshine Fields - being the closest sector of the Zone to HQ, it's within walking distance, much to Armada's relief.

You quickly find yourself on a grassy knoll about a half a kilometer from Safari Zone HQ, the Sun shining down on the trees, grass, and all that other good, green stuff that you don't care about - you're after Pokemon, dammit! And so you quickly scan the vicinity for any good ones.

Mmmmm... Not much of interest here. A few Silcoon hang from a nearby tree, sleeping in the shade of which is a Gloom. A few Starly and Staravia are flying around overhead, and some baby Zigzagoon are scampering across the field, playing.

You pass by a Grimer sleeping on a doorstep, and on the opposite side of the street, a Magneton is lazily buzzing about. A few Dunsparce can be seen huddled under some wreckage near an old alley, floating not too far away from which is an unusual sight: a Drifloon. The Balloon Pokemon floats away from you, then suddenly stops and enters the alley, almost as if it were being drawn there...

Not satisfied with the run-of-the-mill Pokemon you've seen so far, you continue along the meadow, passing more and more trees as you go. One tree that seems to be producing fruit catches your eye; upon closer inspection, it seems that the 'fruits' are a large family of Cherubi, who are quite literally just hanging around. Fluttering about the tree, pollenating the cherrylike Pokemon are a few Butterfree and Beautifly, and hopping around at the base of the tree are a few Buneary, who are being overseen from a burrow nearby by an older Lopunny.

Thing are not going well for Leafeon, her blackened body laying among the smoldering flames. She stands, wavering, and rushes Yana with a Quick Attack. With no way to dodge the Houndoom takes the hit in stride, freeing her from the Grass Knot. Not wasting a second Yana releases another supped up flamethrower which swallow Leafeon whole.

As a last resort, Leafeon tries to muster what looks like a Solarbeam, but the energy is so small and weak it could hardly be called one. The massive burn and wicked poison has sapped all her strength and before she gets the chance to fire another beam of flames hits her for the last time.

You halt you pokemon and she trots back to you, tail wagging. You toss your Great Ball to strike the badly burned fox who puts up little struggle. The successful *PING* signals you have won. Your ball is warped back to the Zone entrance for you departure and with one Pokeball left you think of what to do, stay and catch something else here, or venture to another land.

Once again ignoring the tell-tale signs of possible rare Pokemon, you continue wandering down the street, looking for God-knows-what hiding throughout the village.

You aren't rewarded with much - a Stunky is rooting through a nearby trash can, and a Weezing is hovering lazily in the air, spewing out smoke. An Electabuzz is sitting on a bench nearby, oddly reading a newspaper. An Eevee is lounging on a windowsill, but a sudden explosive noise from a nearby building startles it enough that it falls off.

The meadow around you is quickly turning into a forest from the immense amount of trees everywhere. In the shade of the canopy of green overhead, a few less sunny grassland-dwelling Pokemon can be seen milling about - a few Shroomish are huddled together in the shade of a tree, perched on a low branch of which is a humming Kricketune. Several Rattata and Raticate are nestled under a rotted-out old log that's easily as wide as a car nearby... A log that is half-buried in the ground and easily big enough for a person to crawl through...

The Quest
Returning you pokemon, you examine your Pokegear and decide that your next site for capturing will be the old village. As if on cue a Hypno teleports from nowhere, bowing gracefully and extending his hand. You take it and a myriad of energy and color surrounds you. As the light fades you find yourself standing in front of a decrepit old town with a tilted sign displaying “Old Village” in worn letters. Gripping a pokeball you start your walk into the quiet village, noticing off the bat a Koffing[M] floating by absently while a Misdreavus[F] phases through buildings to your immediate left.

What will you do?

These pokemon not catching your fancy, you keep moving. You search inside building, hoping to run across something interesting. 2 Zubat[M][F] hang upside down inside a building as well as a Fortress[F] nestled in a corner asleep. Just out of ear shot, you hear a snarl which shows itself as a Skuntank[M] who's territory you have invaded.

What will you do?

Finally deciding to follow your instincts (and your brain), you enter the building from which the explosion sounded.

You seem to be in an old warehouse - stack after stack of huge wooden crates are set up as far as the eye can see, and in between those are conveyor belts, packing machines, and other dusty devices.

Needless to say, there are Pokemon all over the place. Several Nidoran - male and female - are scampering through holes in the walls and underneath the old machinery, and a family of Zubat and Golbat are hanging from a broken light fixture. Nestled against a large crack in the wall is a Forretress, which is glaring defensively at you.

As you look around, another blast reaches your ears. You cover them and look up - on a catwalk above you is a boisterous Exploud, who seems to be the boss around here...

Spotting a potential opportunity to catch some rare Pokemon, you recall Armada, who is too big to possibly fit into the log, and then you get down on all fours and begin to make your way inside.

Aside from a stray Metapod clinging to the wall of the trunk, there are no Pokemon here. Disappointed, you continue through the log, eventually emerging from the other end. You are now on the side of a hill with several tall, skinny trees sprouting around you, the Sun beating down on you overhead. It's almost like a jungle here...

And, indeed, there are many Sun-loving Pokemon here - a few Sunflora are standing stoically amidst a patch of sunflowers, and a few Cherrim are standing in a similar manner amongst a patch of pink daisies. A Ledian flutters overhead, seemingly looking for something, but what really most catches your eye is a rare (and overly large) Victreebel hanging from a branch about fifty feet up. His eyes are fixed squarely on you, a soft hiss eminating from his bell-shaped body as he tracks your every move...
