The twenty-fifth round of our little skirmish is upon us and Vivi seems comfortable enough, what with her Substitute and her clones ready to take an attack or two if needed. It is needed, apparently, as Nate swoops down yet again and snatches up the acorn in his claws. He then gives it a toss and the Sub gets lost in a patch of bracken. Bye-bye. Vivi responds by spewing out some Bubbles that pass through Nate’s clone, eradicating it.

All on his lonesome, Nate fires off a crackling burst of electric current. The Thunder Wave sizzles toward one of the Surskits and, oh, looks like it struck a clone. Gonezo. Vivi responds by taking aim at Nate and striking the birdie with an Ice Beam. Poor cold birdie.

Shaking off the ice crystals accumulating on his feathers, Nate unleashes a Confuse Ray… and this one takes out a clone, too! You guys are having terrible luck with those! Now neither battler has any clones, unfortunately. Vivi seems alright by this, though, as she unleashes another concentrated beam of frigid might. Nate, on the other hand… seems less than thrilled.

Though Vivi hovers on the brink of collapsing, he seems ready to fight through his fatigue and continue this little fray. That’s dedication. He pauses to work up some energy while Nate finds a crush Coke can on the ground (littering = bad!) and uses it as his Substitute. Ooh. Clever.

Nate seems to like this idea of taking a load off and flutters down to the ground to reclaim some lost health. Meanwhile, Vivi splits into a bunch of clones for the bajillionth time. The more the merrier.

Confident that his posse of clones will keep him safe from that big bad Murkrow, Vivi again resorts to Relaxation. Nate, however, summons an Ominous Wind to blow across the field, ripping through each and every one of the Surskit copies before striking the real Vivi. Tough break, fella.

Notes:

> When I ref, certain attacks are capable of knocking out all clones even if those attacks aren't never-miss moves (such as Aerial Ace). Ominous Wind just happens to be one of the moves that can obliterate all clones, simply because wind has a broad, unconcentrated scope, allowing it to wipe out a bunch of clones in one fell swoop.

While Vivi is undoubtedly more energetic than he was a few moments prior, the wee Surskit still seems pretty pooped. Nate knows just how to make things worse and does so with a crackling cone of electric current that jolts Vivi unpleasantly, successfully inducing Paralysis. Vivi responds by summoning a bone-chilling wind to sweep through the surroundings and punish Nate severely. However, the Substitute takes the damage and, though the Icy Wind comes thiiis close to breaking the Coke can, it doesn’t seem to be able to do it. Bummer.

Nate: <-3 EP; Sub: 1 HP>
Vivi: <-3 EP; Paralyzed>

Pleased that his Sub is still intact, Nate swoops in for a joyful Drill Peck that shakes up Vivi something nasty. Scarlet beams fire from her eyes and sweep across the field, but for whatever reason they can’t seem to find Nate. On the plus side, Vivi manages to catch the Substitute in his Foresight just fine... but what good is that?

Though enjoying a comfortable lead, Nate nonetheless feigns anger for dramatic effect. He begins cawing and shrieking aggressively, causing the Surskit to mourn his lack of fingers. Alas, no ear-plugging for this little guy! Vivi has a plan and begins strutting around the joint all cocky and self-assured, but Nate doesn’t seem to pay the move any notice.

As Vivi has already started losing health due to his flagging energy, it becomes clear that his time here will not last much longer. Nate recognizes this as welll and, unconcerned, the Murkrow flaps down to the ground and begins Relaxing. Vivi, meanwhile, has had enough with that Coke can foiling his plans and spits out an assortment of different-sized Bubbles that bob over toward the Substitute and burst upon contact. It’s not much, but it’s enough.

Vivi: <-1 HP from fatigue>

Chuffed that he was able to bring down the big bad Substitute at long last, Vivi takes a well-deserved break. But all things considered, is this really the time? Nate does care either way and shrieks, commanding an Ominous Wind to come whispering through the tree boughs and tall grasses. The wind picks up and buffets Vivi callously.

This is it. Just as the Surskit musters up enough energy to really bring the sky down upon that pesky Murkrow, Nate unleashes a concentrated burst of Dark energy. It’s too much for poor Vivi who, after a good fight, succumbs. Good work.

As Vivi is recalled to her ball at long last, Men of Horror pauses in deliberation before selecting the little water-skater’s replacement. With a burst of brilliant red light, out comes a chipper little mollusk. Ooh, it’s my old Omanyte! Hello, Squiggles!

Once again the faster fighter, Nate manages to eke out a quick Taunt, jabbering how Omanytes taste good cracked open and fried in butter. As a result, Squiggles loses the willpower to form a Substitute and instead lets out a long, burbling sigh.

Enjoying his control, Nate swoops downward and curls up his wing into a fist… or something just like one, anyway. Punching birds are a bit nebulous. Squiggles responds by lifting up a few nearby rocks with her mind and hurling them at Nate. Suddenly, she begins to feel mysterious strength suffuse her body. She doesn’t really understand where these stat boosts could be coming from, but hey, why ask?

Nate rolls his eyes. Of coooourse the little shellfish would get the unlikely stat increase. Right. He targets Squiggles with a potent Dark Pulse that does a little damage, while Squiggles tries to addle Nate’s mind with a Supersonic, but can’t seem to muster up the initiative to do so. The memory of that nasty Taunt lingers with her.

Then in your second action use surf to splash all the clones away. If this isnt possible than use bubble as many time times till the clones are away.

MoH, I think you forgot to select a third attack. So far we're at Sandstorm/Blizzard followed by Surf/Bubble. You say to use Bubble a third time if Surf won't kill all the clones, but what do you want Squiggles to do if Surf destroy them all?

Exhausted, Nate manages to let out a pulsating flash of mysterious light that slowly descends upon Squiggles. The Omanyte stumbles, clearly affected, but manages to summon a swell of winter upon our little field. Nate does not seem to be enjoying that Blizzard.

Squiggles: <-10 EP; Confused>

Shaking the bits of snow and ice off his wings, Nate at once splits himself into clones. Hah! Take that! Squiggles seems entirely unperturbed by this attempt and performs a Surf! From the northern claw of water, a giant swell of water careens through the air before dumping itself all over Nate and the clones. All three of the Murkrows pop out of existence while Nate tumbles downward, severely waterlogged.

Yay, her strategy worked! Pleased that she was able to eradicate the clones, Squiggles picks up a small stone off the ground and begins smashing herself in the face with it. That’s Confusion for you. Nate looks on in amusement and begins regaining energy.

Squiggles feels her rage increase; however, at the same time, her Confusion dissipates. Yay! She shoots off a celebratory blue-white beam at Nate. Suddenly, ice crystals form around Nate and freeze the Murkrow solid.

Since she can’t attack, Squiggles then scurries over and pokes Nate in wonder. She’s never seen a Murkrowcicle before!

As Nate shimmers in the sunlight, Squiggles fires off another Ice Beam that deals further damage.

However, his celebration is cut short as the first thing he lays his eyes on once he’s free is the Ice Beam flying his way. It makes contact and brings the big bad birdie down at last.

Nate gets recalled to his Pokeball for a good rest as Wolfsong ponders her next selection. Soon, she gives another ball a toss and out comes a four-legged lizard with a bulb sprouting out of his back. It’s on! Squiggles starts marching around the area like he owns the place, but Briar won’t be bested. A white blur spirals around him, protecting him from getting Confused, but he still gets to enjoy a nice stat boost.

Squiggles frowns. That didn’t pan out so well. He tries for another strategy, this time spinning on the spot and creating some clones. Briar, however, doesn’t think much of this one either and sends out a cascade of sparkling leaves. They arc and dive through the air, slicing through each of the imitation Omanytes before regrouping and swerving toward Squiggles. They slice up the Omanyte something nasty.

Grinning, Briar releases a few chunky seeds from his bulb that soar gracefully toward Squiggles and strike. Upon impact, they burst, harming the poor little mollusk thing. Squiggles is more resilient than that, however, and calls forth a Sandstorm to do his bidding. The sand rolls in, obscuring the field.

As the next round gets underway, Briar seems a-okay on health while Squiggles appears to be at a disadvantage. Briar decides to say no to the billowing sand and calls for a Sunny Day to shine upon them, parting the Sandstorm and allowing the sun to burn brightly. Squiggles calls a small storm of ice and snow to roll in, nipping away at the Bulbasaur as winter chooses to come early.

Squiggles: <-10 EP>

As the sun smiles upon the battle, Briar decides to use this newfound power source to good use. He begins sucking the sunlight into his bulb, an act that takes mere seconds, before firing it in a hot, concentrated beam at Squiggles. The Omanyte is ready and throws up a blue energy shield to absorb the damage. Hah! Gotcha there!

Squiggles: <-12 EP>

Irked that his super-powerful move was for naught, Briar goes for something that’s more of a sure thing. A second assault of sparkling leaves whips and dives through the air before descending upon Squiggles, slicing the Omanyte up like diced scallops. Squiggles replies with a Blizzard that wails and rages through the battlefield, attacking poor Briar.

Rapidly losing health and energy like a tree loses leaves, Squiggles calls upon the power of the weather to lend her a hand. However, before the summoned hailstones can fall lower than the treetops, Briar commands the sun to burn brightly once more. The hailstones evaporate before they can hit the ground. Drat.

Irked, Squiggles looks around for something she can use as a Substitute. Uh, what haven’t I gone with yet… um… oh, look, it’s a squirrel! Yep, Squiggles decides this little furry squirrel will make a decent Substitute. (Squirrel: WTF? O_o) Briar blinks before shooting off a volley of sparkling leaves. One of the leaves boinks the squirrelly on the head and the wee little woodland creature decides, screw this, I’m out of here.

Okay, so that Substitute was short-lived. What about… ooh, Haze is fun! Squiggles breathes out a nice thick mist that obscures Briar’s vision, but the resourceful Bulbasaur just goes for a second Magical Leaf. The leaves arc and spiral through the air before slicing up Squiggles nicely. Sushi, anyone? (Have I made that joke already? Can’t recall.) The Haze then dissipates.

After a long and spectacular battle, the thirty-fifth round is upon us, and it promises to be a doozey. Squiggles, panting and nursing a stitch in her side, manages to raise her arms and command a Blizzard to come tearing through the grassy area. Battered by flecks of ice and snow, Briar nonetheless succeeds in drawing solar energy into his bulb. Suddenly, it bursts, unleashing a concentrated beam of refined sunlight directly at Squiggles. The dazzling blast rockets Squiggles backwards into the trunk of a tree. She doesn’t get back up.

After a long and well-fought battle, the Omanyte is done. It’s over.
