    ‡ Pre-Round ‡

    ‡ Round 7 ‡

Without warning, our surroundings vanish and we find ourselves… miles above a friggin’ canyon! Ahh! Except we’re safe, because we’re all safely perched within bitchin’ hot air balloons. Cool. For our battle’s second match-up, Cynder releases a vicious bird while DCM goes with a winged little fairy thing. Hey, wait! I’ve reffed both these guys before… and they’ve both evolved since I last saw them! Aww! They grow so fast!

Okay, hold it together, Oslo. You’ve got a match to ref. Fluttering high above the canyon, Cootie unleashes a crackling discharge of electricity. Unfortunately for Aikoku, the static sizzles through his frame and induces a nasty bout of Paralysis. However, this particular Braviary seems intent on making the best out of a bad situation. Drawing on strength from his new status, Aikoku rockets forth with a hard-hitting tackle. Cootie spins back in the air, dazed from that incredible blow.

    Aikoku: <-5 EP; Par>
    Cootie: <-16 HP; -4 EP>

Cootie closes her eyes and releases a powerful discharge of rocky energy. The AncientPower assault hits Aikoku hard, dealing severe damage. The Braviary tries to retaliate, but Paralysis locks up his body… and just like that, he starts plummeting to the ground below! Shiiiit!

    Aikoku: <-9 HP; Can’t move!>
    Cootie: <-4 EP>

Giggling, Cootie descends alongside Aikoku, watching as her foe falls like a meteor to earth. Just to make this extra terrifying, Cootie shocks her foe with another electric attack! How incredibly rude! Seconds before colliding with a stone spire within the middle of the canyon, Aikoku opens his wings wide and steers clear of what would be certain death. Spying a few rocks on the spire, Aikoku flies closer and boots them with his powerful legs. They soar through the air before hitting Cootie hard.

    Aikoku: <-9 HP; -6 EP>
    Cootie: <-12 HP; -4 EP>

Disturbed by all this commotion, Articuno and Zapdos swoop down to see what’s going on. Oh… it’s a battle! Deciding to play a little game, Articuno erects a Reflect which she passes onto Cootie while Zapdos generates a Light Screen which he gives to Aikoku. Our two battlers exchange a look and then shrug. Whatevs!

    ‡ Pre-Round ‡

    ‡ Round 8 ‡

As Aikoku’s golden Light Screen and Cootie’s silvery Reflect glisten in the sunlight, Cootie steps things up by… Yawning? Wow, what a way to make this battle real exciting! Cootie unleashes a tiny puff of cloud which begins wafting toward Aikoku. However, the winds at this altitude are rather beastly and they succeed in blowing the Yawn off-course. Aikoku breathes a sigh of relief. Jetting forward, Aikoku rams Cootie with another full-bodied tackle which seems minimized in strength by the Togetic’s barrier.

    Aikoku: <-5 EP>
    Cootie: <-8 HP; -4 EP>

Irked that her last tactic didn’t exactly work out so well, Cootie unleashes a second blast of AncientPower. Fortunately for the little Togetic, her Serene Grace suddenly causes her to feel immense stat boosts in just about every category. Cool! The rocky energy attack smacks into Aikoku, but doesn’t do a whole ton of damage, really. Suddenly, Paralysis kicks in and he begins to plummet.

    Aikoku: <-5 HP; Can’t move!>
    Cootie: <-4 EP; +1 Att; +1 Def; +1 SpA; +1 SpD; +1 Spd>

Geez, not this again. As Aikoku falls toward the earth, Cootie, who simply could not care less, opens herself up to the sunlight and begins to acquire health. Aikoku, once again, manages to save himself at the last second by opening his broad wings and sailing clear of the rocks below. He assaults Cootie with a second Facade, but just like last time, the move appears less powerful.

    Aikoku: <-5 EP>
    Cootie: <-8 HP; +15 HP; -8 EP>

It’s Moltres’s time to shine! The Flame Pokemon swoops in and decides to wreak a little havoc on our foes. She cuts loose with not one but two little flames that strike our battlers and inflict Burns. These Burns then begin to sizzle, robbing both Aikoku <-3 HP> and Cootie <-3 HP> of health.

Throw a Toxic at her. Next use Ancientpower. Finally use Shock Wave.

If she does something to protect from Toxic, change it to Shock Wave
If she tries to use any status moves, us Mirrior Coat.

Meh, protect from toxic. Don't need anotherstatus condition to rack up. Use Rock Slide, and finish off the round by flying through a hoop to get some HP back.

    ‡ Pre-Round ‡

    ‡ Round 9 ‡

Things are still looking relatively close for Aikoku and Cootie as the ninth round of our little skirmish gets underway. Aikoku watches as Cootie begins hacking up some Toxic goo from her gut. Eww. The Braviary smartly throws up an off-white Protective barrier that glistens in the sunlight. Cootie changes her mind and instead tries to roast her foe with a Shock Wave; however, the forks of electricity vanish upon impact with Aikoku’s shield.

    Aikoku: <-8 EP>
    Cootie: <-4 EP>

Cootie once again unleashes a burst of Rock-type energy at Aikoku who retaliates with a rocky move of his own. The AncientPower and Rock Slide pass one another through the air before colliding with their targets; however, both attacks are weakened by the Reflect and Light Screen.

    Aikoku: <-6 HP; -6 EP>
    Cootie: <-6 HP; -4 EP>

Aikoku this time turns away from his foe and begins heading toward one of the bright red health hoops hovering above the canyon. However, as her foe begins to retreat, Cootie decides to punish him with a Shock Wave. With no Protect to ground the attack, Aikoku eats it and wails as he’s roasted alive. However, he manages to dart through the hoop which vanishes. Ahh! Sweet health! And, on that note, whoo for having avoided Paralysis all round!

    Aikoku: <-6 HP; +10 HP>
    Cootie: <-4 EP>

Suddenly, the Light Screen and Reflect vanishes as Articuno swings in to have another go with these two rapscallions. The big blue bird kicks up an Icy Wind which ravages Aikoki <-11 HP; -1 Spd> and Cootie <-11 HP; -1 Spd>, sapping them of health before lowering their Speeds. However, Aikoku's Defiant nature results in a boosted fighting prowess <+2 Att>. Really, though, you’d think the cold blast of wind would be sort of a relief what with the Burns that the Braviary <-3 HP> and Togetic <-3 HP> both must endure.

    Thanks Articuno! xD

+2 attack, 2 statuses and no more light screen makes for one hell of a Facade.

Start off with Toxic, but if it attempts to stop it in any, (eg. Mirror coat, magic coat, protect, etc.) way use Facade instead. Yeah, do that for the entire round, or until it's poisoned. When it's poisoned just use Facade the whole time.

    Toxic/ Facade ~ Toxic/ Facade ~ Toxic/ Facade

As far as I know, the Facade boosts don't stack when you have multiple statuses.

    ‡ Pre-Round ‡

    ‡ Round 10 ‡

Though Aikoku managed to widen his lead over Cootie, it’s still anybody’s match as we enter Round 10. Aikoku begins hacking up some Toxic gunk from his belly but Cootie, ever the clever Togetic, erects a pink barrier in front of her. Hah! Toxic that! Aikoku suddenly stops and instead uses a more, er, direct tactic. He rams into the Togetic and sends him spiraling off-course.

    Aikoku: <-5 EP>
    Cootie: <-18 HP; -5 EP>

Cootie now closes her eyes and begins to soak up the sun once again. As her body begins to metabolize the raw sunlight and convert it into health, though with far more of an effect on her energy than last time, Aikoku wastes no time in going for a second Toxic attack. This time, without a pesky Magic Coat in the way, the attack lands with perfection. Cootie is now positively dripping with disgusting purple goo. It sizzles as it begins to absorb into her skin, poisoning her severely. Yuck.

    Aikoku: <-5 EP>
    Cootie: <+15 HP; -12 EP; Txc>

This time, Cootie seems to be struggling as she uses Morning Sun. Her body manages to convert the sunlight into health, yes, but the effect on her energy is detrimental. Aikoku decides this is the perfect time to strike with another Facade, but Paralysis locks up his body once again. Damn.

    Aikoku: <Can’t move!>
    Cootie: <+15 HP; -16 EP>

Zapdos and Moltres swoop in this time around, hoping to wreak a little more havoc. Dude, these guys have statuses and modifiers coming out the whazoo! Give it a rest! However, the Legendary Birds ignore my pleas (yeah, figures) and strike. Zapdos targets the two of them with an ear-splitting Metal Sound, causing their Special Defences to plummet <-2 SpD>. Moltres, meanwhile, kicks up a Sandstorm that obscures the fighters’ visions. Between the Sandstorm, Burns and Cootie’s Toxic poisoning, both Aikoku <-6 HP> and Cootie <-9 HP> take quite a hit.

Use Yawn. Then Anceintpower and Shock Wave.

If Taunted or she uses Safegaurd, switch it to Shock Wave. Magic Coat status affects.

Use Tailwind to blow Yawn out of the sky and give yourself a speed boost in the process. Facade again, and finish off with a huge Superpower attack.

    ‡ Pre-Round ‡

    ‡ Round 11 ‡

Closing her eyes, Cootie lets out a long, drawn-out Yawn. The tiny cloud created by the attack slowly wafts across the gulf bridging the two fighters. Ready, Aikoku summons a powerful Tailwind that sends him jetting through the sand-strewn air at great speed. This sudden surge of wind catches the Yawn bubble and sends it tumbling off-course.

    Aikoku: <-4 EP; Twd>
    Cootie: <-4 EP>

Propelled by this gale-force wind, Aikoku begins to hurtle toward his foe; however, even with the Tailwind helping him out, Aikoku still isn’t able to overcome the crippling effects of Paralysis and halts just short of his target. Cootie blows the Braviary a raspberry and lets him have it with a close-range AncientPower. Thanks to that Meta Sound, Aikoku roars as the energy tears into him, dealing additional damage.

    Aikoku: <-13 HP; Can’t move!>
    Cootie: <-4 EP>

Without any pesky Paralysis to capsize his plans this time around, Aikoku careens toward Cootie and rams into the Togetic with a Superpowered blow. Cootie winces after that hit but keeps it together just long enough to zap the Valiant Pokemon with yet another Shock Wave.

    Aikoku: <-13 HP; -10 EP; -1 Att; -1 Def>
    Cootie: <-14 HP; -4 EP>

This time around, the Legendary Birds mind their own business. Nonetheless, Aikoku cringes as motes of sand cut into him and his Burn flares up <-6 HP>, while Cootie has to deal with not only these two conditions but also the steadily increasing Toxin <-11 HP>.

If it uses Protect, or anything that stops or deflects your attack then just Attract. If it protects more than once, follow up the Attract with Swagger.

    ‡ Pre-Round ‡

    ‡ Round 12 ‡

As the next round begins, Aikoku whips forward like a bullet with his massive legs outstretched. He puts his full weight into the Facade, demolishing poor Cootie. What is a poor Togetic to do? Um, make more Togetics is what! Cootie does a little aerial twirl and, suddenly, the air is all but bursting with little white fairy things! Cootie and her Togetic trio smirk as they stare down Aikoku.

    Aikoku: <-5 EP>
    Cootie: <-14 HP; -4 EP; 3 clones>

Aikoku now finds himself in a perilous situation as he peers from Togetic to Togetic to Togetic to Togetic without any way to distinguish which is the real deal. So how does one measly Braviary bring down an army with simply one attack? Make sure that attack is comprised of multiple projectiles!

Powered by that impressive Tailwind, Aikoku dives toward the rocky spire in the middle of the canyon. Cootie follows, bristling with crackles of electric current. With a powerful hind-kick, Aikoku sends a pile of large rocks barreling toward Cootie! However, the Togetic is ready: she unleashes her electric build-up at the surge of oncoming rocks. A few stray bolts strike the boulders, but there are simply too many to destroy with a single electric attack. As a result, the rocks fly toward Cootie and her clones, destroying the Togetic doppelgangers while sending the Happiness Pokemon into a tailspin down toward the rocky spire. She lands at its peak and struggles to stand up, but her strength gives way and she goes limp.

The Legendary Birds cry out in unison from above, signaling the end of the fight.

    Aikoku: <-6 EP>
    Cootie: <-12 HP; -4 EP; 0 clones>

    ‡ Post-Round ‡

    Notes:

    > Sorry, DCM, but it's just not conceivable that a single Shock Wave could annihilate a barrage of rocks; as well, since Rock Slide has a wide scope (ie. strikes multiple targets in a double/triple battle), it can take out 3 clones no problem

This match will occur in a boxing ring, a 23'x23' raised platform hedged on all sides by stretchable ropes. After five actions of battle, a bell will sound overhead. At this point, the Pokemon will not be able to attack and will instead return to their corner for a compulsory action of relaxation during which they will regain 6 EP. (If your Pokemon used a combo that round and thereby expended all their available actions, they will not get back that 6 EP.) During this period, the trainers will spritz their Pokemon with special water (whether they want to or not!), which will cause the Pokemon to be cured of any statuses/conditions and lose any modifiers (good or bad) they've acquired. This action of relaxation will recur at the end of every five actions.

Since the boxing ring is located within an enclosed arena, weather moves will not be functional.

Start with Bounce to avoid Mental Slash, and you land use Hidden Power combined with the power of the Bounce. Depending on how Oslo refs this, on the last turn use Toxic if Lina has ran out of attacks (and if not wait until it has used Drain Punch), provided that the Bounce + Hidden Power combo only takes two actions.

Bounce + Hidden Power ~ Toxic

Now that Aikoku and Cootie are yesterday’s news, the battle shifts to a boxing ring surrounded by a roaring crowd! Lina and Kumin slide between the ropes and showboat for the crowd a bit before things get underway. Good luck, guys! Fly like a Beautifly! Sting like a Combee! (Yeah, I know next to nothing about boxing so that was, um, my attempt at colourfully relevant commentary.)

Lina gets things underway first with an explosion of an attack. Combining impressive physical prowess with superior mental capabilities, she darts toward her foe with intense Psychic waves simply bleeding out of her. Kumin tries to leap into the air to avoid the strike, but he’s simply not fast enough compared to this evolved Pokemon. The Aerial Ace portion of the strike hits Kumin in the gut and forces him to double over; then, if that weren’t enough, Lina telekinetically hoists the Mienfoo into the air before launching him hard into his corner. Ouch!

Grunting, Kumin pulls himself up before assuming a combative stance. Suddenly, the Martial Arts Pokemon leaps into the air. Woah! Cool!

    Kumin: <-23 HP>
    Lina: <-11 EP>

As Kumin descends, Lina tries to swipe at the falling Mienfoo but his attempt at the Drain Punch falls shortly. Suddenly, Kumin collides with Lina, causing the Lucario to grunt. However, though Kumin tries to amp things up by tossing a Hidden Power into the mix, the burst of silver energy has very little effect on his opponent.

    Kumin: <-12 EP>
    Lina: <-13 HP; -6 EP>

Having expended all their actions for the round, Lina and Kumin merely stare at each other all dramatic-like.

    Kumin: <…>
    Lina: <…>

Oh yeah, I always forget about that stupid poison immunity on steel types ^^; (That, and I always forget that Lucario is a steel type anyway.)

Combo time, once again! Use Bounce to catch Lina unawares, and when you get out of the sky use the momentum to use an even higher Hi Jump Kick!

    Bounce + Hi Jump Kick

    ‡ Round 14 ‡

Lina watches in silence as her foe once again bounds into the air. However, instead of trying to attack, she merely bides her time.

    Kumin: <…>
    Lina: <...>

Suddenly, once Kumin reaches the zenith of his Bounce, he begins his downward descent with his leg extended. Swooping in at a breakneck pace, Kumin strikes Lina with a devastating kick. But what’s this? In a clever ploy, the injured Lina nonetheless manages to hold onto Kumin by the foot! Yikes! With incredible strength, she thrusts her opponent across the ring into his corner, where he crashes in perhaps the most agonizing position imaginable. Legs all tangled, Kumin lets out a whimper. Ouch.

    Kumin: <-42 HP; -18 EP>
    Lina: <-28 HP; -8 EP>

Suddenly, the bell rings. Kumin struggles to climb to his feet while Lina calmly returns to her corner. The trainers douse their Pokemon with bottles of water. Kumin pants while Lina remains stoic and begins regaining energy.

Use Double Team twice, and pour plenty of energy in there to get lots of clones. Then finish off with Focus Blast.

    ‡ Pre-Round ‡

    ‡ Round 15 ‡

As things spin more and more out of his control, Kumin knows he’s going to step things up if he wants to beat this pesky flea-bitten mongrel. Lina is the first to strike, commanding an assault of Psychic waves that ripple across the field. However, just in the nick of time, Kumin manages to do a spin on the spot and bring three clones into existence. One of the Mienfoo doppelgangers (“Mienfoo doppelgangers” = perhaps the most bizarre pair of words strung together ever) eats the attack, vanishing on the spot.

    Kumin: <-4 EP; 2 clones>
    Lina: <-7 EP>

Lina peers from Mienfoo to Mienfoo to Mienfoo and, without any way of distinguishing which is the real deal, she simply barrels forward and attacks one at random with a vicious head-first tackle. However, the move simply strikes another clone. Drat! Intent on increasing his evasive potential, Kumin does another spin and suddenly three more Mienfoos appear to keep him company.

    Kumin: <-4 EP; 4 clones>
    Lina: <-6 EP>

Lina growls as her calm façade is slowly chipped away. Frustrated, she tries to hoist Kumin into the air with a second Psychic attack but, yes, that hits a clone as well. Smirking, the four remaining Mienfoos simultaneously raise their outstretched arms forward and unleashing a brilliant blast of pulsating light. Though only one of those Focus Blasts is real, it still manages to strike Lina with the intensity of several separate attacks. Could this be the beginning of a turnaround?

    Kumin: <-10 EP; 3 clones>
    Lina: <-20 HP; -7 EP>

    ‡ Pre-Round ‡

    ‡ Round 16 ‡

Lina begins by slamming her foot onto the floor of the ring, causing the entire stadium to shake and shimmy about. Kumin is thrown to the ground painfully and his clones suffer similar fates as they are all thrown either to the ground, the corner or the ropes. Either way, they vanish. Pulling himself up, the wily Mienfoo unleashes a startling blast of Steel-type energy which has minimal effect on Lina.

    Kumin: <-10 HP; -5 EP; 0 clones>
    Lina: <-4 HP; -8 EP>

Pleased with herself, Lina fires a Heal Pulse at herself right in the gut. Suddenly, she feels renewed vitality and smiles—just as an Aura Sphere care of Kumin comes tumbling toward her. Lina is launched into the ropes, which she uses to steady herself. Well, there goes a lot of that extra health.

    Kumin: <-7 EP>
    Lina: <-16 HP; +20 HP; -13 EP>

Suddenly, the bell rings and our fighters are forced to return to their corners for a short break. The trainers spritz their Pokemon with water as they regain energy. Suddenly, Kumin closes his eyes and Regenerates a bit of health as well. Cool!

    ‡ Pre-Round ‡

    ‡ Round 17 ‡

Though this has been somewhat an uphill battle for Kumin, he balls up his hands into fists and assumes a combative stance. Time to kick some doggy behind! Preempting a strike, Kumin suddenly uses… Psychic powers? Eh? The Mienfoo hoists Lina up toward the rafters where she collides with a steel bar before slamming her back down to the ring with devastating force. Yikes! Lina pulls herself up and, glowing red, uses her own Psychic. She similarly thrusts Kumin up; though he doesn’t fly quite high enough to hit the rafters, he nonetheless is sent slamming down to the ground with a good deal of strength. The Mienfoo feels his ability to withstand ranged blows dip.

    Kumin: <-14 HP; -7 EP; -1 SpD>
    Lina: <-18 HP; -7 EP>

As both fighters find their health levels diminishing, they know they need to step it up in order to win. Lina careens toward Kumin and cannons into his solar plexus with great strength. At this point, as Kumin begins circling the drain, he unleashes a devastating outburst of pulsating energy. The concentrated blast throws Lina clear out of the ring and onto the cement ground. Kumin waddles over and peers over the ropes at Lina’s body below. The Lucario doesn’t move.

    Kumin: <-12 HP; -10 EP>
    Lina: <-20 HP; -6 EP>

Kumin jumps for joy. Yay! Victory! The crowd roars and he begins thumping on his chest. As he riles the crowd up, he’s entirely oblivious to Lina who, with a hair of strength remaining, slowly and silently climbs over the rope and reenters the ring. She begins charging up another Psychic attack and the red glow out of the corner of Kumin’s eye causes the Mienfoo to turn his head. Ahhhhh, the fuck!? Zombie Lina!? In a mad panic, Kumin uses Me First just in time and again rockets Lina out of the ring and into the crowd. Yeah, now she’s definitely done.

Kumin shifts and chuckles awkwardly to himself. Yeah, close call.

    Kumin: <-7 EP>
    Lina: <-1 HP>
