The last pre-order I did was for Pokemon Black and White...paying a $5 deposit on each, I only had to pay the remainder of the price of each when they came (like buying something $5 off).

Never pre-ordered a game! Never any point! You Pre-Order, you pay at LEAST 20 dollars more! The price always comes down the first day anyway, and the retailers all price-match anyway.

I walked in to buy Final Fantasy 13-2 on release day at 10am, asked them to pricematch to the price of Big W (78) and they dropped 30 dollars off their asking price. If I had pre-ordered, I'd have had to pay the 108 they were asking for.

In the States at least $59.99 is the MSRP of most console games at launch. Here in the US at launch it really doesn't matter where you go. 99% of the time you'll pay that price. Not a penny over or less. If I ever saw a big name retailer price gouging I'd seriously report them.

As for the price dropping after the first day that also doesn't happen here. It'll usually take a good 2-3 months before the price comes down at all.

There's often a large gap between retailers and the pricing of games. Final Fantasy 13-2 was selling for 108 dollars at EB and JB Hi Fi was selling it for 78 and Big W for 76. The game was on sale at the same time, but in order to be GUARANTEED a copy of the game (In case every store everywhere sold out on day 1) on release day, you're essentially paying $30 dollars more for the exact same product.

Games are MUCH more expensive here, with little to no justification as to why. Even when our dollar has US parity & with digital distribution so there's no physical shipping cost.

New PS3/XBox/PC Games are around 80-100 DS are around 60

It's a bit eh.

But apart from a very rare pre-order bonus, there's no reason to waste extra money.

They do the same over here, just not with new releases. If you find a game in a different store that's cheaper than the one you're buying it from, you can get them to price match it to that store and sometimes even end up paying less than that.

I've never seen it happen on release day, though.

At the end of the day, it's the game shop that's losing out on the money, not the developers themselves. If the shop orders in stock and ends up selling it for less than the value that they purchased them at, they're the ones losing out. *shrugs* Nothing illegal about that.

Well when I was asking if that was legal I was talking about in regards to stores charging more than the MSRP. I have never heard of such a thing in the US at least and personally find it crazy that a pre-order over there essentially forces you to pay more. Here in the US it costs $5-$10 to pre-order depending on the retailer with whatever you put as a down payment being taken off the final cost. I'll typically put about $10 per month down on something I have ordered and then by the time it's out all I have to do is pick it up.

Right now I've got Max Payne 3 halfway paid, $10 on MoP and $5 on AC3. If I didn't put anymore down on any of them then when I pick them up I would owe $30 on MP3, $55 on AC3 and $30/$60 on MoP (since it's an expansion it's only $40 for the base game. If I get the CE it'll be $70)

I think my latest pre-order was Pokemon White last year. I would rather have wanted Black because Gothita's catchable there but I didn't know about that when I made my choice.

The last game I pre-ordered was Das Schwarze Auge: Satinavs Ketten on the PC, a point-and-click adventure based on Germany's most popular pen and paper RPG franchise. I doubt it'll ever seen a release outside of German speaking Europe.

The last (and first!) game I pre-ordered was Kid Icarus Uprising. I never particularly felt it necessary before, but I've really gotten into ordering online and having it delivered to me, rather than heading in-store. Plus, all the nifty bonuses are neat. My dad pre-ordered Mario 3D Land for me to secure the Tanooki hat, too!

Really wish I had pre-ordered the special edition of Sonic Generations... But that's water under the bridge. I paid the price for that mistake (quite literally).
