Among the platformers I would definitely also advise to play the classic CastleVania games.
For Western RPGs Fallout is a must IMO.
Here you may list and browse games by genre. There might already be sites like this, but why not do a TPM one. How it works, you just suggest and/or discuss genres and best/popular/example games which belong there and which don't.

I was aware that Castlevania would be hard to categorize. For one thing, I must humiliate myself and say I never played it and for the second thing, when I started this thread, I quickly checked Wikipedia and it said Castlevania is 'Action-Adventure'. That's actually an advantage of this thread, sites like Wikipedia may have flaws, but we here at TPM can and must be critical.
Back in the olden days CastleVania used to be considered an action/jump 'n run. Starting Symphony of the Night on the PSX (the first Metroidvania) it became more of an action/adventure.

Okay.
I have new additions:
Racing Games
- Need for Speed
- Ridge Racer
- Gran Turismo
Miscellaneous
- GTA
As a long-time Legend of Zelda fan, I have felt that the majority of the games aren't RPGs, but rather adventure/fantasy type games (the only one I consider to be an RPG is Zelda II: The Adventure of Link). I mean, many RPGs have a level-up system (where you fight to gain experience, which makes you gradually get stronger and stronger as you gain levels), but the only Zelda game that has it is Zelda II.
I can list a few other game series in certain genres, though, so...
Platformers:
Kirby series
Donkey Kong series (which extends to the Donkey Kong Country games)
Crash Bandicoot series (not really one of my favourite platformer series however)
Beat 'em Ups:
Battletoads series
Double Dragon series
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series
/\ with the first two, there was a game called Battletoads & Double Dragon where the main enemy of each series (the Dark Queen in Battletoads, the Shadow Boss in Double Dragon) teamed up, and as a result the Battletoads had to team up with the Lee twins of Double Dragon to combat their combined armies.
Racing:
Mario Kart series (how could you forget this one, Mikachu? Mario's not just into platforming you know)
Also, can't forget the puzzle game genre:
Tetris series
Bejeweled series
Bomberman series
Dr. Mario series
The Incredible Machine series (I put this one on because it strongly appeals to my creative side, and my liking of gadgets and gizmos)
Knight of Time
Legend of Zelda fan for life.

Now I see what's so wrong with the usual comparison between Final Fantasy and Zelda. They fall into entirely different categories.
I didn't mention them to make this more simple. There's so many genres Super Mario has contributed to, being the icon of video gaming.
Thanks for your input, both of you!
I would say the Mega Man franchise is also one of those that's multi-genre, even within the individual series (with a couple of rare exceptions). Platformers are the primary presence, but there have been RPGs, Adventure games, even a racing game (which actually was pretty fun and I wish they had made a sequel to) and one crappy sports game that clearly was released before it was finished.
I love the series that Mario has become. I also love the rest of these games in this topic.
The Hero of Hyrule.
