Have you watched Pokemon XYZ? I ask because there Ash doesn't do dumb decisions and some even say it's the best season ever. A contrast is the succeeding season, Sun & Moon, which is more like a comedy.

I only watched the show for the first four seasons or so but I always thought he's not a very capable trainer but a damn lucky bastard; he barely won any of his Kanto gym badges through abilities. He was a great guy though.

I got bored with Ash not learning lessons or growing up around the orange islands arc... that's about how long I lasted watching this show lol

No, he never knew what he was doing. He just helped the Gym Leaders in some way or another and they were like "Here's a badge."
