you MUST have the network adaptor or is it optional and is it true you have to pay for playing it online?

I don't know what this network adaptor is but you can play the game online only, if that answers your question. And yes, you have to buy an account for the game, meaning you have to pay for playing it.

of course you need the adapter, dip****. how else are you going to get online with your PS2? And yes, I am aware there are USB adapters too. Maybe you should search on Google (http://www.google.com) for your answers. You'll find them much quicker and you won't get replies like this.
