View Full Version : Game: Lingo thirteen (MA) REPOSTED

It's about time this lost topiic gets reposted, with the stats.

The game is like MasterMind, except with words. There's a given word with a given amount of letters, and everyone guesses it. The person in charge each round rates the guesses with how many letters are in the correct places (right), how many letters are in the word but not the right places (misplaced), and how many not at all (wrong). Hope that's clear enough.

Scores (still, as of version 12):

ILikePokemon;P: 7
Lady Vulpix: 83
Zak: 78
Tsukasa: 1
Gamewizard007: 1
HanyouPrincess: 1
Jay: 26
JamieC: 1
Last Exile: 5
Crystalmaster Mike: 2
Venuskazam714: 3
Icy: 2
Avian Freeze: 15
Pichu: 15
Cheesey: 1
Hexae: 2
Titandude21: 2
Aipom Of Doom: 13
Magmar: 2

As for what's been won in the previous 13 version on the vB, and on the temporary board (which I'm sure Gabi kept track of, but if not I insist on counting it).
Zak: Seisms, Faraway, Cheese
Lady Vulpix: Another, Awkward, Forsaken

I believe it was my turn, so shall we continue... I'm doing an EIGHT letter word.

Why do I keep playing this game despite the fact that I've never won anything?

Zak
11th July 2005, 05:46 AM
Look at Tom, he didn't win anything the first few games he was in. Later on, he caught on. Unfortunately (well, actually it is pretty fortunate for everyone but Lingo players) he's been banned.

Zak
19th July 2005, 03:32 PM
Just a suggestion, Christen... might wanna consider using the calculator, cause I noticed several mistakes, and wouldn't have been able to get it unless by sheer guessing. Cherokees, for example.

And... you're leaving? Well then.... adios.

Lady Vulpix
19th July 2005, 06:22 PM
Maybe you misread it, Zak. I used the calculator to check and it gave me the same result she posted. Unless she edited the message before I saw it but after you did.

adios: not an English word, but still... 1 right, 0 misplaced, 4 wrong.

Number1ChanseyFan
19th July 2005, 10:23 PM
Hmmm, I double-checked everything with the calculator, and everything checked out except for pantyhoes, there should have been two correct instead of one. But everything else was correct, including cherokees, and I haven't been editing my posts!! I am sorry about the mixup with pantyhoes, but I can't find any mistakes with the others... Actually, the calculator makes things a lot easier though. lol I did all of them on paper.

My lexicon says that 'niether' is not a word...

mr_pikachu
5th September 2005, 01:55 PM
As much as I hate doing this, I may as well guess neither.

Lady Vulpix
5th September 2005, 04:03 PM
I feared this would happen. By the way Zak used the word it was evident that he had the right word in mind, and I would assume that he just made a typo. Something similar happened at Pokemon Hangman when someone misspelled 'Bulbasaur'. The right word is 'neither' (I could make so many bad jokes, but I'll save you both from them this time). Now, the question is... how do we solve this situation? Who should get the Neither Plushie? Who should host the next word?

In the past some people have chosen odd spellings for their words (Polygymy springs to my mind) and players had to get the spelling the host had thought off, so following that reasoning this round should go to mr_pikachu, but it still doesn't feel right since Zak did all the thinking and mr_pikachu only corrected a typo. Thoughts, anyone?

mr_pikachu
5th September 2005, 04:06 PM
To be frank, I think it should go to Zak. He obviously knew what word he was trying to give, and "neither" is such a common word that I doubt he actually didn't know how to spell it. A typo of this nature shouldn't cost him the prize.

Besides, this isn't how I want to win my first plushie in Lingo. I'd rather actually put out the effort myself than simply grab one due to someone else's mistake.

Zak
5th September 2005, 04:12 PM
I wouldn't mind giving it up this time given how it's going, but...

Besides, this isn't how I want to win my first plushie in Lingo. I'd rather actually put out the effort myself than simply grab one due to someone else's mistake.

6th September 2005, 12:29 AM
Deserter: 1-2-5

Lady Vulpix
6th September 2005, 10:15 AM
Wow, these clues are good! I've managed to cut the whole lexicon down to 2 possible words. Which one should I guess first?... the one with priority, of course.

Zak
6th September 2005, 12:41 PM
Wow... is that so? This word HAS TO be there...

Priority: 2-2-4

Lady Vulpix
6th September 2005, 01:25 PM
I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

Zak
6th September 2005, 06:52 PM
It's a little early for that, but here's your "Door to Tomorrow" plushie!

~Zak

Lady Vulpix
7th September 2005, 02:03 PM
Thank you. Then my lexicon was right about there being 2 possible words.

7 letters now.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _

Zak
7th September 2005, 02:12 PM
Alright... 7 letters...

I guess there's a high chance the word is on the lexicon.

mr_pikachu
7th September 2005, 11:19 PM
Have you heard of an instrument called a ukulele?

Lady Vulpix
8th September 2005, 09:59 AM
Yes, it is on the lexicon, Zak. You know I like to use it.
And yes, I've heard about ukuleles several times before.

Now the clues:

lexicon: 4 misplaced, 3 wrong.
ukulele: 2 misplaced, 5 wrong.

Zak
11th September 2005, 03:58 AM
Fithos.... Lusec.... Wecos... Vinosec

Great song, that is... from FF8. Not sure what those words mean, but that last one is the one I'll be submitting into the calculator.

mr_pikachu
11th September 2005, 05:03 AM
Could the word be an anagram?

Lady Vulpix
11th September 2005, 10:53 AM
No, it couldn't. Not with the previous clues, like lexicon which has only 1 letter in common with anagram rather than 4, and ukulele which has none at all.

vinosec: 1 right, 4 misplaced, 2 wrong.
anagram: 2 misplaced, 5 wrong.

Zak
11th September 2005, 01:06 PM
Wow...

I hope you don't think my account should be deleted because of that foolish question...

Lady Vulpix
11th September 2005, 03:53 PM
Of course not! Why would it be?

seniors: 3 right, 2 misplaced, 2 wrong.
deleted: 1 right, 0 misplaced, 6 wrong.

mr_pikachu
11th September 2005, 04:00 PM
Because some (one) of the more (most) feared mods have (has) been ruthless, thinking of themselves (herself) as "the deleter of data."

Zak
11th September 2005, 05:06 PM
Sorry about all taking advantage of guessing words that are sort of in other languages... well, I imagine that the Rosetta Stone is more known.

~Zak

Lady Vulpix
11th September 2005, 08:09 PM
Indeed it is, Zak. To me at least.
And mr_pikachu, why are you being so cryptical? I can't think of any mod that's as feared as you describe. I did delete Questions Only 1, but only because it was the biggest pit of SPAM I'd ever seen on TPM. And I've never suggested that any accounts were deleted. And I've heard no one call himself/herself the "deleter of data".

deleter: 1 right, 0 misplaced, 6 wrong.
rosetta: 1 right, 2 misplaced, 4 wrong.

mr_pikachu
11th September 2005, 08:12 PM
Well, let's just say that when I was a newbie here, I got owned so much that I was nearly banned... and she didn't call herself the deleter of data, but that's what she did. To my sig. Many times.

(And she was actually higher ranked than a mod, but that's how I thought of her at the time.)

It was also an easy way to make decent sentences for my guesses.

Lady Vulpix
11th September 2005, 08:16 PM
Oh, I see. I assume you're referring to the Sig Police, then. However, here you are, still. So stop fearing for your account, nobody's aiming at it for deletion. Not that any accounts are. O_o

guesses: 1 right, 3 misplaced, 3 wrong.

mr_pikachu
11th September 2005, 08:22 PM
Well, yes, I suppose I can feel secure now. But several seasons ago, that wasn't the case.

Lady Vulpix
11th September 2005, 08:29 PM
If you say so...
seasons: 2 right, 2 misplaced, 3 wrong.

mr_pikachu
11th September 2005, 08:33 PM
When you see "owned. Final warning," in your sig, you know you're on the verge of trouble.

I need something for comparison. How about senator?

Lady Vulpix
11th September 2005, 09:07 PM
I hope that helps.
senator: 1 right, 3 misplaced, 3 wrong.

[Edit: fixing the result of seasons because I've just realized the calculator hadn't loaded correctly and I was reading the result of the previous guess. Sorry.]

mr_pikachu
11th September 2005, 10:13 PM
I'm getting confused with trying to go through the logic, so I'll throw out something that seemed pretty close: sinuous.

And is there some sort of word list for this game? It keeps sounding as if you all are referring to a lexicon. Where can I find a copy of that?

Zak
12th September 2005, 03:57 AM
Igneous.

Lady Vulpix
12th September 2005, 08:42 AM
Zak got it. Enjoy your Igneous Plushie, and be careful not to get burnt!

Yes, we do have a lexicon. It can be quite useful. I would attach it to this post, but it's too big, even compressed. If you give me an e-mail address, I can send it to you. Same goes for anyone who wants it.

Zak
13th September 2005, 12:50 AM
Seven letters. I am SURE of it this time. No more, no less, seven.

mr_pikachu
13th September 2005, 02:44 PM
I am adamant about playing this game!

EDIT: Oh, and I have a question regarding this game's rules. I recall a discussion about the legality of using a computer program to determine the correct word, and I remember that it was deemed illegal. I was wondering if altering the lexicon itself would be legal. What I would like to do is use a computer program to merely reorganize the list by the number of letters in the word, and use the alphabetical order as a secondary priority for the list. Would that be legal, though? I won't do it if it would be against the rules.

Zak
13th September 2005, 03:28 PM
Well, as I recall... the programs that people used basically used a lexicon, and with every clue it showed all the words that would fit in each clue. So eventually, about three or four clues would limit it to a single word at times. But I wouldnt mind if all you're doing is making the lexicon sort itself in different orders, as that isn't directly telling you what the word is. So if that's what you're doing, that's fine.

~R-M-W~

Adamant: 1-0-6

mr_pikachu
13th September 2005, 05:26 PM
Well, basically all my program would do would be to change the list so that the words would be divided up by how many letters they contained. Within those categories, they would still be sorted alphabetically. I'd only be using a program since the list is WAY too long to resort manually, and it would only recreate the list in a different file. I'd still be picking through each possibility one-by-one manually during the game, with the one difference being the lack of a need to wade through words with the wrong number of letters.

Anyway, let's try this: crested

Zak
14th September 2005, 09:10 PM
Crested: 0-1-6

~Zak

Lady Vulpix
15th September 2005, 01:47 PM
I think that's allowed. Anything that doesn't relieve you of the need to use logic should be ok in my opinion (which means grep with no options or with the -v option would also be ok).

abubble

Zak
15th September 2005, 07:52 PM
Abubble: 0-0-7

What's that?

mr_pikachu
16th September 2005, 12:37 AM
I have no idea what you just said, Gabi, but I'm guessing that resorting the list is okay.

bramble

Lady Vulpix
18th September 2005, 08:29 AM
[color=hotpink]abubble: (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=abubble)
1. Forming or giving off bubbles.
2. Very active or excited.

As for grep, it's a program that lets you filter text files showing only the lines that match a certain expressions. With no options it tells you the lines that have a certain substring in them, and with the -v option it shows you the lines that don't have it.

For example, if I use
grep -v a all.txt
it returns all the lines in all.txt that don't have an a in them.

Now, let's try a new guess...

Thans for waking it up. Hope you don't mind a singing plushie!

Lady Vulpix
25th September 2005, 07:42 PM
Not at all! I like it! Now I can sing along with it. :) Thanks, Zak!

I have a 6-letter word and an 8-letter word, so the next person to post can choose which one goes this time.

Zak
3rd October 2005, 12:29 PM
I'll go with the extended one.

mr_pikachu
4th October 2005, 06:29 AM
I'll start with my usual: aardvark.

Lady Vulpix
4th October 2005, 12:36 PM
Thanks for returning, both of you.
BTW, I found the word 'aedoeagi' on the lexicon. Does anyone know what it means?

extended: 1 misplaced, 7 wrong.
aardvark: 2 right, 0 misplaced, 6 wrong.

mr_pikachu
7th October 2005, 05:31 PM
Hmm. I think it's something to do with taxonomy, because I found it on this (http://www.curci.de/snude.html) page. The relevant quote is below.

Having a bit of practice you may arrange "comparative plates" (e. g. of some aedoeagi) or maps (e. g. some photographs of specimens or collecting data of certain islands) on your own.

I'll look some more for it. And my word is bolded. It seemed fitting.

Lady Vulpix
8th October 2005, 10:58 AM
Thanks.

And I'd say it's quite fitting, for being so early in the game.

taxonomy: 2 right, 3 misplaced, 3 wrong.

Zak
10th October 2005, 07:58 PM
Ever been to Yokohama?

Lady Vulpix
13th October 2005, 06:41 PM
No, I haven't. Jatima Tova, Zak, or whatever the English spelling is.

yokohama: 1 right, 3 misplaced, 4 wrong.

Zak
13th October 2005, 11:03 PM
Thanks... Hatima Tova to you too.

Skarmory

mr_pikachu
14th October 2005, 01:00 PM
Will you give me some presents for Christmas?

Lady Vulpix
15th October 2005, 03:43 PM
Zak: thanks. I imagined you'd spell it differently over there, since J in English sounds different.

mr_pikachu: I don't even celebrate Christmas, but if you want to exchange presents, I'm open to it whenever you want.

skarmory: 6 misplaced, 2 wrong.

presents: 1 right, 2 misplaced, 5 wrong.

I've managed to get a lot of letters, but I can't think of anything that fits yet... oh well...

Zak
3rd November 2005, 10:34 PM
Okay, nine letters.

Btw, Gabi... did you try to IM me earlier? It says you tried to, but I wasn't able to see it. Somehow I can't communicate with people who use gaim.

~Zak

Lady Vulpix
4th November 2005, 10:21 AM
Oh, how annoying. :\ Yes, I said "Hi" and then I said "I guess you're away". Now why would any messages sent with GAIM not get through? What program are you using?

Let's start with abduction, and hope no players get abducted because of this.

It's in the lexicon, so it must be a word. It's a Turkish name, apparently.
What about seventeen?

Wow... I don't know if my clues narrowed it down that much or if it was just a lucky guess, but that's right!

Here's seventeen plushies... for one point.

~Zak

Lady Vulpix
7th November 2005, 02:37 PM
Well, all those 0 misplaced clues helped a lot. After that, and removing all As and Bs, the list became so small that I could filter it by hand, looking for words with either 2 Is or 2 Ns but not both, that either started with R or had E as their second letter but not both.

Thanks for the plushie(s). 7 letters now.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _

mr_pikachu
7th November 2005, 03:06 PM
I am an adamant player of this game.

And you're allowed to use a program to filter out words that cannot be correct? I didn't know that! To what extent can that program work under Lingo rules?

(No wonder I've always been so awful at this game! I thought you guys must have analyzed that list for hours on end!)

Lady Vulpix
7th November 2005, 03:22 PM
Nothing that does the thinking job for you, Brian. Only grep without options or with the -v option. (As in, the word must match a pattern or the word must not match a pattern). And yes, we did analyze the clues for hours. At least I know I did, and I believe Zak did too.

Grep is included in most Linux distributions and you can also download a Windows version for free.

adamant: 1 misplaced, 6 wrong.

mr_pikachu
7th November 2005, 03:29 PM
I shall consult an internet search as to what "grep" and "-v" are. In the meantime, let's try ukelele.

Igneous? I thought you already did that word... or someone did.

~Zak

Lady Vulpix
13th November 2005, 12:18 PM
I've checked the plushie page, and it wasn't there. Still, another word has been done twice in the past, I don't think there's a rule against it. Sorry about the delay. The igneous plushie's yours.

Zak
13th November 2005, 01:07 PM
I see... but twice in a row? I'm pretty sure that's the last one you did... yes, it is. Check the last few pages.

Okay 8 letters.

Lady Vulpix
13th November 2005, 01:45 PM
O_O Sorry about that, I guess I forgot to update the plushie page last time. It's been a bad, bad week. :(
