what the hell is the point of berries in FR and LG? is there a blender or something somewhere i missed?

Berry Crush. It's a wireless mini-game.

Besides that, and the berries that have a useful effect (like Oran, Pecha etc), there's no direct need for most berries in FRLG, but I guess you can always trade them out.

If you get any decent Berries you could use them for battling your friends. However the decent Berries are only on Pokemon Colosseum so you're stuck with crushing your Pokemon FR/LG Berries to get some cheap Vitimins. Which are useful for doing the first few EVs on your Pokemon.

Sadly, Berry Crush is only possible as a multiplayer minigame, so if you don't have any RL friends who play FR/LG, you're out of luck.

One good thing about Berries in FR/LG, though, is that you can obtain berries #31-35: Spelon, Pamtre, Watmel, Durin and Belue, without limit. Trading some Pamtre berries over to Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald would sure help with evolving a Feebas into Milotic; you don't have to worry about planting and watering the berries!
