View Full Version : How do new abilities work? (And other questions)

I need to know this in order to use them at the Adopted & Captured Pokemon subforum. I've seen many guides and they all have different descrpitions, all extremely vague, and I don't have a GBA, so I can't test it.

I've managed to compile this list (http://forboards.tripod.com/Traits.txt) but, as you can see, many things aren't clear yet.

I'll summarize.

Ability: Gluttony
Effect: This pokemon eats held berries faster. Just... how much faster?

Ability: Quick Feet
Effect: if this pokemon is burnt, paralyzed or poisoned, its speed increases 1 grade. Is the speed decrease that comes with paralysis ignored or not?

Ability: Skill Link
Effect: Raises number of hits when using moves that hit multiple times. How much?

Ability: Snipe
Effect: When this pokemon inflicts a Critical Hit, the base power of the attack increases. How much?

Ability: Sun Power
Effect: When Sunny Day is in effect, HP decreases 1/8 each turn but Special Attack increases 1 grade. Is this correct? Please confirm.

Ability: Technician
Effect: This pokemon's weak moves (which ones?) increase in power. How much?

And how exactly does Poison Heal work? Each guide says something different! Can someone test it, please?

As you may see, there are other things on that file in addition to the ability lists. If you could help me complete those too, I'd be very grateful (and add your name to the credits).

Thanks in advance.

Poison Heal, according to Serebii.net (they'd be the experts, I'd say), causes HP recovery when afflicted by a status condition.

I'm afraid I can't help you with the specifics of any of the rest. I assume Technician aids attacks with a low base power (Triple Kick might apply). By how much, I don't know.

Unfortunately, I really don't have a clue about the new abilities, as I don't have an import and I'm not fond of ROMs.

However, with the 2 vs. 2 battle moves... I know it's a really small thing, but doesn't Mist work on both you and your partner? I don't know how I thought of that, but it seems like that was how it worked.

EDIT: And I thought Ancientpower hit both opponents, although I'm not as sure about that one.

Gluttony: I'd guess that the berry would be eaten either at 1/3 HP or 1/2...

Quick Feet: the speed decrease would be negated, its just like how Guts works, even though the poke is burned, its attack is still increased instead of halved then increased

Skill Link: well seeing as how only shellder and cloyster recieve this ability, im guessing it only has to do with spike cannon, and to make the ability at least a bit useful, the number of times it would have hit probably doubles

all i know

The list at Serebii is the first one I saw. I started looking for others because the descriptions I found there were too vague. Does anyone have the games? Could you please run some tests?

It could also work on Icicle Spear...

And doubling sounds kinda high to me - it probably just increases the hit count by two or another set number.

=O overlooked icicle spear but the amount of times being doubled still wont make it a better attack then ice beam

I got some helpfrom a guy at Clockwork Mansion. The following questions remain.

How much? Options: 1 more hit, a random chance (what chance?) of an extra hit for each successful hit, a random chance (what chance?) of an extra hit each time the attack is issued, still 2-5 hits but the chance of getting more hits is higher (how much higher?).

Ability: Sun Power
Effect: When Sunny Day is in effect, HP decreases 1/8 each turn but Special Attack increases 1 grade. Is this correct? Please confirm.

How exactly does Poison Heal work? Each guide says something different! Could you test it, please?

There are some attacks that require physical contact and others that don't (this affects abilities like Cute Charm, Rough Skin and Static). Are the ones that do the same attacks that are classed as Physical (as opposed of Special) in Diamond/Pearl?

Gabi: in regards to your last question, no, they're not the same. The attacks that triggered Rough Skin in RSE do the same in DP - for example, Earthquake, which is still based on Attack, won't trigger it.

I'm not sure which new attacks trigger it, though.

I'm assuming that any Pokemon that uses an attack that involves BODILY contact (such as Body Slam, Tackle, Bite, Crunch, etc.) will be affected by Rough Skin.

At least, I'm pretty sure that's how it worked in R/S/E and I'm assuming they'll keep it that way for D/P as well.

But in DP physical and special attacks don't depend on their types. All attacks that require bodily contect on RSE are physical on DP, most moves that weren't on that list are special on DP (save for Cubone's bone moves). And I haven't been able to find any lists of DP moves that mention whether they involve bodily contact or not.

Oh, Gabi, www.psypokes.com has a TechDex. They list what attacks are direct and which ones aren't. They don't have all the new attacks labelled, but they have them regardless.

Ah, that's good. Until the attacks are labeled I don't think there's an easy way to know which is which, but once they are, that will become a useful resource. Thanks.

Gabi: Do you still want a list of the new attacks and if they involve the Pokemon making physical contact? I can put together a list if you would like.

That would be great, Christen. If you give me that list, I'll put your name on the credits. :)

Wow, you're putting a lot of effort on that, Christen! I don't really need that much detail. Just a list of the moves that involve bodily contact.

Oh, that's ok!! I am putting a seperate list at the bottom of my list that just divides moves by those that make contact and those that don't. Everything is finished now!!

Thanks a lot, Christen! I've updated the file (http://forboards.tripod.com/Traits.txt) now. :)
