Game Play

The game is like MasterMind, except with words, usually 5-12 letters long. There's a given word with a given amount of letters, and everyone guesses it. The person in charge each round rates the guesses with how many letters are in the correct places (right), how many letters are in the word but not the right places (misplaced), and how many not at all (wrong).

Say I've come up with the secret word "cow". I'll tell you "Three letters". You guess "two". Someone else guesses "oar". A third person guesses "the".

I'll return the results as:
Two: 0-2-1 (None correct, two misplaced letters, one letter is irrelevant to the word.)
Oar: 0-1-2
The: 0-0-3

Using that logic, you could recognize that two of the letters in "two" are found in the word; a third letter, which may overlap with the original two, is possibly misplaced. The letters in "the" are not found in the secret word, so you know that the "t" in "two" is not in the secret word. So "w" and "o" are found in the secret word.

Following that logic, you know that it must be "o" from "oar" that is also in the secret word. Since the "o" cannot fall in the first or third slot, you can discern that "o" is the second letter. And since "w" cannot be in the second slot, it must be either in the first or third.

Your word is either _ o w, or w o _. All other letters presented are not in the word.

Game play continues until somebody properly guesses the word. That person then runs the next round of Lingo.

Rules

1. I do use a checker to verify how many right, wrong and misplaced. Please try to work them out on your own rather than search around online for a puzzle solving program. That's cheating and it kills the fun and challenge.

2. You may guess as many times as you like in each puzzle, but only guess one word at a time, and do not post twice until I have posted with the reply to your original word.

3. Choose words that are in the English language, not hyphenated or spaced, and try not to make the words too obscure. Don't use proper nouns, as they are not universal.

HOWEVER: When guessing, you may use a proper, one-word noun, like Wednesday.

Also, words have to be verifiable through an official English dictionary or thesaurus as real words that are not classified as "archaic" (i.e. talketh).

4. You score one point for each solved puzzle. I have the old score table, don't worry! I'll present it after this round.

The official Lingo Calculator™ by Lady Vulpix can be found here! (http://forboards.prophp.org/lingo.php) (That's how I check the 1-2-0 etc.) No it won't help you since you don't know the original word.

The first word has nine letters. :)

YESTERDAY?

mr_pikachu
3rd August 2007, 09:09 PM
I have a question. In the old days of Lingo, we were allowed to use the Grep program, but only to eliminate choices based on certain traits. (For instance, if we knew that a certain letter was in a certain spot, we could eliminate any words that didn't fit that specific criteria. Likewise, we could eliminate words that had letters which we knew weren't in the puzzle.) Is such limited use of the Grep program still legal?

(If you don't recall what Grep is, ask Gabi. She's the one who gave me my copy. And incidentally, I need to ask her for another copy of the word list; mine got corrupted.)

As for a guess... corrupted works.

Magmar
4th August 2007, 02:17 AM
Well, most of the members here don't have Grep. Wait and ask Gabi what she thinks, I trust her decision.

I think it's ok to use Grep, it doesn't really make much of a difference, it just helps you do an easy task faster. And you can download it for free.

I'm not using it yet, though. I'm posting a guess to help confirm or discard something:

I say go for it =) I don't have a problem with using a program like that provided it's free and accessible to all participants. Plus I have a hard time believing you'd endorse cheating in any way =)

Thrush, yay! Infected baby tooth disease! My favorite haha (it's also a bird lol).

Well, the next word has ten (10) letters!

I do, Brian, but at home, not here at work. And I don't know how much access I will have to my home computer until the weekend (visitors are staying in the computer room). But you can search for Grep on the web, it should be easy to find.

CREATIONAL

mr_pikachu
7th August 2007, 01:43 PM
Actually, I still have grep (although I haven't tested it to make sure it still works after my file transfer). That's not a big deal, really.

The bigger problem for me is that I need a new word list, or grep itself is useless for this game. That and the fact that I'm weighed down by morality, so I don't want to use grep anyway until it's available to everyone through the thread. WHY MUST I HAVE MORALS? >_<

Lady Vulpix
7th August 2007, 06:04 PM
Alright, the word list's on my site (http://forboards.prophp.org/index.html). (Search the links for English word list).

Is Blarg a word, because if it is Blarg

mr_pikachu
16th August 2007, 01:26 AM
I've been looking through dictionary.com, reference.com, and Gabi's word list... haven't found "blarg" anywhere. Sorry, but I don't think I'm supposed to count that guess, from what I can tell.

Zak
16th August 2007, 04:07 AM
OMG NO WAY I MISSED TWO ROUNDS I WAS IN NY FOR TWO DAYS :( :(

Anyway, as the creator of this game let me once again go over the limits as two what may be guessed. I remember stating a while back that you may use proper names that aren't in the dictionary, but preferably as guesses rather than the word for people to guess. You may also guess ANYTHING as long as its not a word you made up. You may go from fictional things like Harry Potter terms to random video game RPG terms or like words that are invented in certain songs that the lyricists made up... like Supercalifragilisticexpialadocious or Ob-la-di Ob-la-da (obviously just examples since a word isn't gonna be that long or that short) or a name of a company... hell, even people sometimes guess names of Pokemon! Basically, as long as the word is not just a random combination of letters you made up to be a convenient guess that you never heard anywhere else before. To me, Google is a good enough judge as to whether a word is an apropriate guess.
According to Google, "Blarg" is a lot of things, so it IS a legit guess, and I would insist that you rate that guess.
However, it is true that the way Crazy Elf Boy said it it sounds like he was digging for random combinations of five letters that are pronouncable. But Google has "Blarg" as a lot of things, including a company and I'm pretty sure a word, so it's more than a fair guess, considering it gives an average amount of matches for a word that exists on google (as opposed to only five pages). It would have been better if Crazy Elf Boy had googled it, and then used one of the matches as an example of what it could be.

One thing though, it would be preferred that you TRY and use only real words for the actual answers. I mean, every now and then it would be okay if you use a name or fictional word that a lot of people would know, I mean, Pichu once used "Nazgul". I just wouldn't want to get too carried away with it. But as far as guesses are limited, have Google determine that for you.

and also, cocks.

(if anyone got my above inside joke, I love you, but if not, don't ask me to explain, heh.)

16th August 2007, 04:20 AM

is there a chance that this could become an international game?

Magmar

The game will most likely remain in English, since nearly everybody in these forums is fluent in English to some degree. Like stated earlier, it's an excellent tool to gain some new understanding of English.

I'll try EXPOSITIONARY, even if I know it's not the word and someone is bound to get it before I can check again.

Time for an eight-letter word.

Zak
20th August 2007, 04:54 AM
Has Gabi become one of those triple posting spammers? ;)

Actually when I had made that previous post I wasn't sure it actually came through since I clicked submit and nothing happened, it just kept loading, so instead of trying again I just said fuck it, but whaddaya know, it actually appeared. So... I think clicking submit once, even if it doesn't finish loading, ensures your post coming through. UNLESS your internet disconnects while you have that window open.

mr_pikachu
20th August 2007, 06:19 AM
Gabi and I started discussing this on AIM once she had the problem. I tested it myself and got the same result... basically, what happens is that it appears that the post doesn't get through. The "in progress" thing on your browser keeps going until it times out or whatever. But even though it seems like your post didn't get through, it shows up once the forum catches up with the posts that are being made. So if you hit that "Submit Reply" button nine times, there will be nine posts. (Seriously, that very thing happened in Hangman awhile back. I still don't think that record's been broken.)

Back to the game!
