Game Play

The game is like MasterMind, except with words, usually 5-12 letters long. There's a given word with a given amount of letters, and everyone guesses it. The person in charge each round rates the guesses with how many letters are in the correct places (right), how many letters are in the word but not the right places (misplaced), and how many not at all (wrong).

Say I've come up with the secret word "cow". I'll tell you "Three letters". You guess "two". Someone else guesses "oar". A third person guesses "the".

I'll return the results as:
Two: 0-2-1 (None correct, two misplaced letters, one letter is irrelevant to the word.)
Oar: 0-1-2
The: 0-0-3

Using that logic, you could recognize that two of the letters in "two" are found in the word; a third letter, which may overlap with the original two, is possibly misplaced. The letters in "the" are not found in the secret word, so you know that the "t" in "two" is not in the secret word. So "w" and "o" are found in the secret word.

Following that logic, you know that it must be "o" from "oar" that is also in the secret word. Since the "o" cannot fall in the first or third slot, you can discern that "o" is the second letter. And since "w" cannot be in the second slot, it must be either in the first or third.

Your word is either _ o w, or w o _. All other letters presented are not in the word.

Game play continues until somebody properly guesses the word. That person then runs the next round of Lingo.

Rules

1. I do use a checker to verify how many right, wrong and misplaced. Please try to work them out on your own rather than search around online for a puzzle solving program. That's cheating and it kills the fun and challenge.

2. You may guess as many times as you like in each puzzle, but only guess one word at a time, and do not post twice until I have posted with the reply to your original word.

3. Choose words that are in the English language, not hyphenated or spaced, and try not to make the words too obscure. Don't use proper nouns, as they are not universal.

HOWEVER: When guessing, you may use a proper, one-word noun, like Wednesday.

Also, words have to be verifiable through an official English dictionary or thesaurus as real words that are not classified as "archaic" (i.e. talketh).

4. You score one point for each solved puzzle. I have the old score table, don't worry! I'll present it after this round.

The official Lingo Calculator™ by Lady Vulpix can be found here! (http://forboards.prophp.org/lingo.php) (That's how I check the 1-2-0 etc.) No it won't help you since you don't know the original word.

The first word has five letters. :)

Good guess, Gabi :) I have so much to do for the next few days with back-to-school and feeling better, finally, so I picked an easy yet slightly tricky one ^_^ "Later" was a lucky early guess.

Your turn!

Shadow Wolf
29th August 2007, 04:41 PM
Nice move Gabi. Who would've thought that a first guess would have been able to reveal almost half of the real word.

I'll be waiting for the next word.

Later!

Lady Vulpix
30th August 2007, 06:01 AM
Indeed, Louis. :) I think all the guesses were lucky. All of them had a 0 somewhere.

6 letters now.

Does anyone else find this game more fun and enjoyable and challenging without having access to grep? I sure do.

Lady Vulpix
31st August 2007, 05:55 AM
More challenging, yes. More enjoyable? I don't know. It's fun to try to figure out how to filter the list, and filtering it by hand is too much of a hassle.

Anyway, you have access to the next round now.

Zak
31st August 2007, 06:49 AM
Hmm... okay, I'm not exactly sure what you mean by filtering the list, but all these years I'm actually not sure if we even used the same method.

Anyway, the next one's a niney.

EDIT: and by the way, I DO remember Pslightly Psycho Psychic.

Lady Vulpix
31st August 2007, 07:48 AM
Ah, yes, Zak remembers.

I haven't always used the same method, but I'm currently using the word list to help me find possible words.

Too cool to try to use that in a sentence this time eh.

Anyway, that was it. Enjoy this... plushie. Heh heh.

Lady Vulpix
2nd September 2007, 10:32 AM
Wow! And I was just talking about the psychic thing. Ok, it was not the first guess, but there must have been many possibilities left. Thanks, Zak.

As for using it in a sentence, was that a challenge? If so, I have a co-worker who once said marijuana smokers were better people. You might get an idea of my opinion on him.

Hmm... 12 letters now.

Hey... I thought we established that clicking the post button will submit the post rest assured even if it doesn't load, that is, as long as you're connected.

Lady Vulpix
3rd September 2007, 05:50 AM

Sorry. Long, Internet-less day.

Blademaster: is 'delicatessan' a word? I can't find it in any dictionary. Don't you mean 'delicatessen'? I'll put this one on hold until I get a confirmation. And Grep is very useful, you just don't know how to use it. Don't insult what you don't understand.

I agree with you about what Blade said, but I would encourage him to be like me and use his head more, cause unlike you, I don't need to use it.

I shall post a guess shortly, I just had to reply and didn't want to have to wait until I thought up a guess in order to reply.

Lady Vulpix
5th September 2007, 02:25 PM
What's your problem, Zak? I don't need to use it either, I played for at least 2 years without using it. But then I found that using it saved me time, which is something I have very little of. I still use my head to make the deductions I need for grep to be of any use. You should try using yours before you post something like that.

Magmar
5th September 2007, 04:25 PM
Put it my my mouth...

Dreamcatcher (it's one word. I googled.. but I don't blame you if you check.)

Lady Vulpix
5th September 2007, 05:07 PM
I've seen it used as a word before.

dreamcatcher: 0 right, 3 misplaced, 9 wrong.

Zak
5th September 2007, 06:36 PM
Alright, sorry.

Have you ever volunteered in storytelling?

Magmar
5th September 2007, 06:52 PM
Haha we just can't seem to get a break!! But dreamcatcher dropped a couple of clues...

Extravagancy

Lady Vulpix
5th September 2007, 08:11 PM
It may have, but I'm afraid it was too late, Magmar.

And yes, Zak, I have. Many times. Whether people want to listen/read is another story.

Apology accepted, plushie given. :)

Zak
6th September 2007, 12:37 AM
Hehe, thanks.
On a side note, in that program I was on last year one of the volunteering options was storytelling, which always ended up being the most problematic part, heh.

My word is a little shorter. Eleven letters (have we had any of those yet? Come to think I remember 9, 10, 12, 13, and 15 but is this the first eleven? I'll probably peruse the plushie list later unless Gabi gets around to beating me to it and saying).

Magmar
6th September 2007, 05:35 AM
Serendipity lol

Lady Vulpix
6th September 2007, 05:54 AM
Apparently you and I have guess 11-letter words, Zak: Thingamabob and Flabbergast.

I'll try serendibite (http://www.webref.org/geology/s/serendibite.htm) (a triclinic mineral, Ca2 (Mg,Al)6 (Si,Al,B)6 O (sub 20) ; aenigmatite group; blue.)

Crystalmaster Mike
6th September 2007, 09:50 AM
Well, since it seems we're on to using s-words:

serviceably, which comes from serviceable (http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=serviceably&x=0&y=0), is my guess.

mr_pikachu
6th September 2007, 01:17 PM
You're practically asking for me to guess serviceable, aren't you?

Shadow Wolf
6th September 2007, 03:05 PM
The S words are surrounding the game right now.

Blademaster
6th September 2007, 03:39 PM
Why are you all being so SUPERFICIAL? It's not like every 11-letter word in existence begins with the letter S.

...Wait...

Zak
6th September 2007, 04:38 PM
Okay, thanks... yeah I remember now. Come to think, I'm pretty sure I remember randomly guessing flabbergast before I had anything to base it on.

Serendipity: 3-3-5
Serendibite: 4-1-6
Serviceably: 1-4-6
Serviceable: 2-3-6
Surrounding: 0-3-8
Superficial: 1-5-5

Hehe, even though when I post the results I tend to usually prefer not to randomly comment on stuff that's blatantly revealed like Gabi does, this time I can't help it, seeing as I'm amazed how much will already be revealed from these six first guesses. This word's gonna go fast for sure. :)

Zak

First of all, INSTINCT is 8 letters.

Also, I think I've used "Syzygies" or "Syzygy" once.

Ataxias

Lady Vulpix
24th September 2007, 05:25 AM
Ok, if you're all so mad about my use of grep, I'll stop using it. It's not a lingo solver anyway. You're overestimating it. Maybe that's why you couldn't figure out how to use it? Were you trying to get it to tell you things it can't tell? I do mean instinct. And uncommon words are common in Lingo, I've seen it used as a guess several times before. Syzygy means an alignment of celestial bodies. And will you please stop double-posting, Blademaster?

ukulele: 0 right, 0 misplaced, 7 wrong.
ataxias: 0 right, 4 misplaced, 3 wrong.

mr_pikachu
24th September 2007, 05:29 AM
To be fair, I think that last double post by Blade was because of a forum glitch late yesterday. I had to go back and delete a couple of my own multi-posts, in all honesty.

Lady Vulpix
24th September 2007, 08:03 AM

Lady Vulpix
24th September 2007, 12:57 PM
I never said anything about your presence. You should just watch out for the recurring glitch to avoid double-posting whenever it shows up.

That, and stop accusing me of cheating, because that's what your post sounded like.

mr_pikachu
24th September 2007, 01:12 PM
Blade, after I spent God-knows-how-many hours teaching you how to use Grep, you'd dang well better not leave!

Zak
24th September 2007, 05:50 PM
I don't care about your use of grep, even though it may seem otherwise. I said at one point that I find it more fun to guess without it, but it was more fun back when no one was using it. I know what it does, kinda like a substitute for the lexicon but better.

Also Blade, stop being such a fucking prat just because things aren't going your way. Instead of throwing fits and stuff either have someone explain it to you or learn the regular strategies. How old are you, anyway?
Look at mr_pikachu, he's been playing this game for ages and just recently he discovered the strategy (of course I may be wrong about the recentness, but you know). Same with a bunch of others. But whatever, if you wanna leave, whatever floats your boat. But I guarantee once you get the hang of it you'll regret having considered leaving, but your presence here isn't bothering anyone, the more the merrier, just stop having such a damn attitude.

By the way, anyone play cricket?

Shadow Wolf
24th September 2007, 06:29 PM
Come on guys! What's wrong? I know that we find some things useful, or unuseful (like grep, and like forum glitches. I once did 15+posts because of that glitch once, right mr_pikachu?), and sometimes we disagree with ourselves, but that doesn't mean that we have to speak like this to anyone.

This is a game, and games are here to make people have fun together, not to have arguments over minor problems.

Sorry if this is spamming, but I just don't feel right doing nothing to help, or at least to do something good, if I can.

anticorset (I'm trying to discard letters in case it's not obvious).

Thanks to Louis for the translation, I'll try to refine it now.

I was very tired. I've had to organize/supervise a test (which always leaves me tired) and I went with my mom's car (which she rarely lends me car), and when I returned to the parking lot, I discovered that someone had broken the glass and stolen the stereo of the car.

Addition: as anxious as that made me, I had to spend an hour under the sun cleaning away enough pieces of shattered glass to make it safe to drive back home. And the sun and I don't get along very well. So yes, I was exhausted when I got home.

And today I've corrected 2 exams, 5 more to go.
