View Full Version : Steroids, Scandals, and the Mitchell Report

How is it that nobody else posted about this?

As anyone who follows baseball (or sports) at all knows by now, the 409-page Mitchell report (http://files.mlb.com/mitchrpt.pdf) (beware of file size) released on December 13 details the use of banned substances by 88 MLB players.

This would not be so surprising if it were not for two critical factors. First, the bevy of high-profile names on the list, from Bonds to Clemens, Pettitte to Tejada, and everywhere in between, is stunning. (Albert Pujols, who NBC News mistakenly said was listed, is one of the few stars noticeably absent from this salacious document.) Second, Congressman George Mitchell did not have subpoena power in conducting this investigation; the information gathered was from a mere three sources who willingly talked with him. One has to wonder how many more names would be revealed if we collected all the evidence.

In the last five days, Pettitte and a few others have admitted their use of HGH. Clemens, Bonds, and most of the crowd remain either silent or in vehement denial. The results of this report further call into question the integrity of today's game as well as the hallowed records within it. While some consider whether massive testing reforms are warranted, others argue over asterisks and the Hall of Fame.

I don't think I need to say it, but I will anyway... discuss.

Oh wow. I don't follow baseball too ardently; I had no idea Roger Clemens was named. That blows.
Baseball is at an absolute low point, and there's not many ways it can get better from here. For how many of those HRs can we claim Bond was jacked up? All because someone escaped being named, who's to say they're clean?
If you ask me, I think there should be two sets of asterisks, one for people actually proven to be on roids, another for players unlucky enough to be playing during this timeframe.
Seriously. Baseball (and pro wrestling while we're at it) really needs to get with it. There's a reason roids aren't an issue in the NFL...

Yes, Clemens was one of the most prominent figures in the report.

...In light of the fact that there are people on this planet who don't know all the big names on the report by now, I'll list everyone for you. High-profile players may be bolded at my own discretion if I feel like it.

(Note: Players that appear multiple times have played for multiple teams. The number next to each team indicates how many players were in the report. Also, thanks to Wikipedia for the lists.)

Baseball has really been going down the drain in recent years, it's pretty sad. The Mitchell Report's just one more thing that's telling us what we already know: steroids are out of control in baseball. I'm not surprised Clemens was named, but this just seems to be turning into a witch hunt, you don't know who's clean or who's not, but there's dirt on everyone.

Just make steroids mandatory and we won't have to worry about this anymore.
