I thought we ought to have a thread where we can post any interesting/funny news-stories that don't deserve their own thread but still deserve a mention of some kind, and then discuss them like the mature, well-adjusted adults that we are.

Anyway, I'll go first.

Yup, unbelievable. I swear Britain is becoming more like Alabama everyday.

Wow, thats crazy. But funny.

My friend was telling me about this married couple that she knew were trying to get pregnant, but they weren't concieving. so they went to a fertility doctor and found out they were brother and sister....I guess their biological dad was a sperm donor? Haha.

I imagine it sucks though because you fall in love with this person, and find out they're related to you. A tragedy indeed.

"Because she's my sister."

Anyone follow football in the UK? Did anyone catch Man-U's 6 nil romping of Newcastle? Classy stuff. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/7172817.stm)

In other news, Charlton romp Blackpool 4-1 (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_1/7172819.stm).

I'm hotly anticipating a Championship title race. Should be good stuff.

And my hot news item for today, Bush warns of dangers from Iran. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/7185580.stm)

Iran having been pissing me off as of late. First of all, they invade British-controlled waters and take several British sailors hostage, which is an act of war in my books, and last week they were caught harassing US vessels, which isn't apparently the first time they've done so.

If they want a war, can't they just be men about it and say so?

Heald, the scoreline for the Man Utd against Newcastle was kind of unexpected. Firstly, I was predicting a 3-0 trashing but then the scoreline was doubled that. >.<;

My guess would be that Big Sam's departure from the club comes at a bad time especially since the season is exactly halfway through. Adding to that, some of Newcastle's big Africa's player would be leaving the club to play for their country. And this includes their profile Nigerian striker, Martins, and the defender Geremi.

Face it. Newcastle is not going to even qualify for UEFA cup at this kind of sloppy performance.

Newcastle are a Championship-class team that are perennially stuck in the Premiership. They probably won't get relegated this year, but I won't be surprised if the lads at St. James Park will be hosting the likes of Burnley or Blackpool on a regular basis in the next five years.

Chess master Bobby Fischer dead at 64 (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080118/ap_on_re_eu/obit_fischer)

While his personal life degraded into utter catastrophe and his mind was pushed to paranoia from spending his existence on the metaphorical battlefield, Fischer was an inspiration to chess players and to an entire nation. He is still the only American to be officially recognized as the world chess champion, and his dominating victory over Russian Boris Spassky in 1972 is arguably the most famous match of all time. Fischer's legacy will live on in the annals of history and will hopefully inspire young and old alike for many generations to come.

Now, I love the monkeys, but this is hardly news.

The NME awards are bought and sold. The fact that their biggest sponsors influence the awards, and they always give talentless hacks awards mean the awards are worth jack shit.

Plus NME is only read by retards who have no individual opinion on music and only like what they're told to listen to.

The fact that Winehouse and Nash are up for solo artist awards just proves this magazine is fucking tosh.

The United States: State of the Union (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080129/ap_on_go_pr_wh/state_of_union_text)

Well the State of the Union just aired. While it was mostly issues concerning the nation and not world affairs, there were some interesting things noted.

~ Bush addressed Nancy Pelosi as "Madam Speaker" I believe that is the first time said ever at a State of the Union.

~ Bush "threw down the gauntlet" as it is being called, when it comes to ear marks. Something that has been a problem with the Congress this year, and something that will most likely be a Republican rally cry during this election.

~ Bush gave some numbers for the draw down in Iraq, being over 20,000 troops, and was also able to give some very good news about the progress in Iraq for the first time since 2003.

By trusting the people, our founders wagered that a great and noble nation could be built on the liberty that resides in the hearts of all men and women. By trusting the people, succeeding generations transformed our fragile young democracy into the most powerful nation on earth and a beacon of hope for millions. And so long as we continue to trust the people, our nation will prosper, our liberty will be secure and the state of our union will remain strong.

So tonight, with confidence in freedom's power, and trust in the people, let us set forth to do their business

I watched the State of the Union address, I did not however listen to the democratic reply which was just awful. Pelosi blinks alot. I thought it was a far better address than last years but Bush isn't a great speaker. I also find that his total blaming of congress for everything just looked horrible in there, shouldn't a state of the union be about aspirations for the coming year? Not congress you must do this or you must do that.

Lottery winning rapist could be sued; feminists with sandy vaginas update their blogs in celebration (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7216895.stm)

If you don't want to read the whole story, here it is in brief:

- Man sexually assaulted a few women, got a life sentence.
- Man won £7 million (about $14 million) while on day release (and was allowed to keep it, as per UK law)
- Man was released from prison (life sentence meaning 7 years in an open prison...okay...)
- Victim wants to sue him (despite being outside the 6 year claimant period) but claims it isn't 'about the money', so would obviously donate all of the proceeds of any lawsuit to a rape charity (of course, this will never happen).
- UK law lords originally uphold decision that she can't sue, then change mind when tabloids whine about it.
- Now victim could possibly sue rapist in order to pay for the de-sanding of her vagina.

Of course, if she does successfully sue a man who has already served his conviction of a crime, then it proves the prison system is bullshit. Officials always claim that prisons are there to rehabilitate as well as lock up dangerous individuals, so obviously someone who has completed his sentence should be regarded as a free man. Allowing people to keep suing criminals after they've completed their sentences is, frankly, bullshit. If you have served your time, you deserve a fresh leaf (obviously taking into account your past crimes, for example, sex offenders obviously not allowed to work in schools). If I was that guy and about to be sued, I'd just piss all the money away so then no one gets to benefit from it. If criminals can't start anew, you might as well line up everyone who's in prison and shoot them in the head, since it proves jail is bullshit.

Mother of 8 abandons children to wed in Africa; arrested upon return (http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/080130/world/children_alone)

This really upset me to here that somebody would leave their own kids, kids who don't know how to care for their own selves, just for something as petty as marriage with an online lover from a different continent. Even better, two of the children weren't even the woman's, and the oldest kids didn't even know their own birthdays.

As much as I hate giving any sympathy to a rapist (especially one who served a "life sentence" of only seven years), you're right that this would set a terrible precedent, Heald.

Obviously, your prison record can reflect on your future opportunities in terms of jobs and such - most employers like to stay away from felons when they can, and I don't blame them. But you shouldn't keep getting slapped around by the legal system once the period of your incarceration and the opportunity for further punishment (i.e. statute of limitations) expires. Sentences are meaningless if we ignore them, and that sets a bad standard for the whole system.

Heald
30th January 2008, 05:45 PM
Yup. The law is 'you can't be tried twice for the same crime', although I guess you have the option of going through the civil courts since I think he only got tried in a crown court, through which I suppose she has a legal right to seek compensation (provided the statute of limitations hasn't run out). Just like OJ.

mr_pikachu
30th January 2008, 08:24 PM
I'm not upset at all that she's seeking compensation, but the fact that she's apparently missed the "six year claimant period" means that she shouldn't be able to. When that period expires, even a former criminal shouldn't have to keep looking over his shoulder waiting to get hit with something.

Good, now maybe the USA will stop being a little bitch and end its ridiculous trade embargo against Cuba.

Local Congressman was on Local Radio talking about this. The trade embargo will not be lifted until Cuba starts to have free elections and giving their people even a ounce of freedom. And as he put it "If our allies are serious about free elections, then they will join the US in forcing Cuba to allowing it's citizens participate in free elections."

Heald
19th February 2008, 11:09 AM
It still doesn't change the fact the embargo is ridiculous, and incredibly hypocritical. The US is happy to trade with China, another single-party system, and with oil-rich Middle-Eastern and African dictatorships, plus some politicians (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_DeLay) may publicly support the embargo but flout it privately. Plus, take into account the US is Cuba's 7th largest trading partner. Some embargo.

The only reason for any sort of embargo is because the US is still all pissy about failing at Bay of Pigs.

Yet another football star accused of rape and then cleared of all charges (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/7297002.stm)

Nowadays in the UK, any woman wanting her 15 minutes of fame can just claim they were raped by a football star and face no consequences for their actions. While this football star went through 3 months of hell, facing police intrusion and investigation in his life while the press had a field day besmirching his otherwise good name, the liar doesn't even get named in the press or even prosecuted for wasting police time.

If the world wasn't run by imbeciles, women (and perhaps men) should be subjected to full DNA-testing of their person before any arrest is made, and if it turns out to be bullshit, the accuser ought to be pilloried in the press as a liar and be prosecuted and fined for their lies. Until there are real consequences for such life-ruining lies that can even lead to suicide, then this culture of kowtowing to liars in order to pillory innocent people will never stop. I'm sure liars will be less willing to lie if they are subjected to such intrusive measures and the risk of being publicly outed as a liar.

Okay, let's be honest. This is just stupid. From what I understand, "hate books" are pretty common. It's an outlet to release your frustration with others that doesn't result in their deaths. Not saying that these kids are gonna go kill their classmates now, but if you want a more accurate assessment, I'd rather have 100,000 fake Death Notes than a single Columbine. Restrict one outlet, and people will find others.

EDIT Age-old argument between cakes and biscuits set to cost UK taxman £3.5million (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/7340101.stm)

There is something quintessentially British about arguing whether something is a cake or a biscuit, the classic example being Jaffa Cakes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaffa_cake), an argument that ludicrously went to a UK court. The thing is, in the UK, biscuits are taxed, whereas cake are not, so not only are cake and biscuit labels for a product, they are also legal definitions. I love stuff like this that makes Britain so...British. I doubt there's another country in the world that is so particular about tea-time snacks. If biscuits and cakes were not so intrinsically fused in with the custom of tea-time, one of the everyday occasions Britons hold most dear, I doubt it'd make much difference.

Anyway, now a particular brand of cakes has been mistakenly labelled as biscuits for 20 years, thus the UK has been wrongfully earning 20 years worth of tax on these cakes, and is now being forced to pay it back.

It makes me sick. And now New Zealand has this craze over buying the right virgin olive oil and growing olive trees etc. People say its a cultural thing I just find it all pretentious crap.

But this story does upset me because it just seems so unnecessarily, especially when you have vets who are meant to be better than this stuff and yet thats what they're doing. This makes me so angry. Why not study under a vet, and observe ACTUAL surgeries of animals that are brought in, maybe getting in a scalpel slice or two after observing for an amount of time, working their way up? Anesthetizing animals before euthanizing isn't really inhumane, (but treating "rows of cages" like desk drawers of office supplies certainly is) but it just doesn't make sense! Recovery and observation is a very important concept to learn in vet school as well!

The word "practice" should never precede the word "surgery."

Hmm the US dollar rising would be beneficial here for our exports and stuff but my god, petrol prices will be over the roof. In fact one of the main reasons, New Zealands petrol prices are still under 2 dollars a litre is due to the fact that the US dollar is weak against the NZ dollar. Just a 10 cent change will push our prices perhaps to the 2 dollar plus mark. So while dairy exports and meat exports and tourism would benefit, importers who are already feeling the pinch as sales are slowing and consumers could be worse off.

The British Pound rising would be good for exports and tourism and perhaps with Migration, but hopefully it doesn't reach the stage when it was so expensive to travel to Britain.

Anyway just turning the News story into a local issue.

(http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7412671.stm) Universal are appealing to overturn the decision, but I hope this doesn't happen. Allowing music industries to have eternal ownership of anything they produce would set an incredibly dangerous precedent.

Wood River Refinery expansion halted by IEPA (http://www.thetelegraph.com/news/permit_14813___article.html/roxana_expansion.html)

This seems more local, but the refinery, less than a mile south/west of my house, is the third largest in the US. As you can tell from the comments, it's quite divisive here, with some blaming "tree-huggers" and others blaming the current government or ConocoPhillips. While oil refining isn't the greenest business, it's one of, if not the biggest in my area (next to a steel mill).

I personally thought CP was doing above and beyond to try and reduce emissions and that the protesters should have seen this and not put jobs of many in my community in jeopardy.

Those four Justices really really scare me. In other words the 2nd Amendment remains one of the few safeguards to keep the Government from becoming a dictatorship.

I really don't think when the Constitution was made that the bearing of arms in the modern sense was what they were thinking. But of course powerful groups such as NRA make sure that it stays. And ensure that it is defended everywhere. But the truth is without guns, America would be far safer.

But of course that statement can't be made since unlike other western countries, America has always upheld the right to own handguns etc where elsewhere its not allowed and because its so enriched in American culture. Banning it in anyway wouldn't change things because its so entrenched.

Isnt that amazing? You have one of the most Liberal Gun Restrictions in the entire United States, and all it has done is help create the most violent city in the US. Then again as the old saying goes "You never see anyone trying to rob a gunshow"

I really don't think when the Constitution was made that the bearing of arms in the modern sense was what they were thinking.

It doesnt matter what caliber the guns were, the basic premise still exists. You have a right to your property and a right to protect it.

But of course powerful groups such as NRA make sure that it stays. And ensure that it is defended everywhere. But the truth is without guns, America would be far safer.

Only for the criminals. We could outlaw guns right now and the Criminals would still have them. Washington DC is a perfect example as to why Gun Bans do NOT work in America.

I wouldn't disagree with that, MToolen. As you implied, there's no way to remove guns from the streets; there are too many for anyone to keep track of them at this point. Well for one if you are going to get a gun you obviously going to take training to recieve that, thus why we have gun permits.

As for the guy in the pantyhose mask, yeah he deserves to get three bullets into him, as does the guy that enters your house. Those people at that point have gotten to a point in their mind where they are willing to go to extremes to get what they want. They forfit their lives when they decided to come up and attack you. Here's the problem. Maybe they don't deserve to die, but are you supposed to be punished for it? Ideally you could take non-lethal action, but most people haven't received training that would allow them to precisely attack and subdue an armed enemy without killing them (or getting killed). If you fight and yet hold back, you're as good as dead. Basic rule of combat. The majority is thus left with a simple choice: either completely surrender or go all-out to defend themselves.

Again, this is not the ideal solution. But we have to be realistic about the world in which we live and move beyond dreaming of utopia.

EDIT: Roy's point is valid as well. Whoever holds the gun is in control. And when the guy in control is the one holding up people for their cash, the balance of power needs to be shifted anyway. Most people, I think, would rather not place their lives in the hands of a mugger.

Yes, and we all know how bad Vash the Stampede was hurt trying not to kill people. I feel very blessed to live in a neighborhood free of most immediate danger, so I'm not too sure how I'd react. While I know taking life shouldn't be in my hands, I don't know if that knowledge will matter with a gun pointed at me.

About the operating handguns issue, there are very many things that could go wrong with shooting one, especially with today's gangsta culture promoting firing sideways and angled; due to Newton's third law of motion, the reaction to the bullet could propel the gun out of one's hand. Just one example.

Suppose the man is mentally ill. Does he deserve to die then?
Suppose the man is homeless and only needed money to feed his family - and made a poor choice. Does he deserve to die then?

When that man walked up to you and pointed a weapon to threaten your life and the lives of those around you, they lost any claim they have to their human life.

A claim to one's life is something that can never be lost. To think otherwise is barbaric: Shooting the guy in the knee or the arm holding the gun should be sufficient. Overpowering and subduing him should be a responsible gun-owner's top priority, not mercilessly gunning him down in cold blood.

All of the answers to those are yes, the man has threatened your life, he walked up and basically got into the mindset of "Its either me or him". You do not have time to play a guessing game. You either take action, or you yourself basically forfit the claim on your life as well as the ones around you.

My mentality would change greatly if I were switching my gun away from a sheet of paper and towards a living being. The training would be useless at that point.

At the point that you have to actually pull your gun out, at that point you are running on so much adriniline and going on the mindset of killing this person. That the training you have will pretty much guide your body.

A claim to one's life is something that can never be lost.

Yeah it is, when he steps toward you and points a gun at you, he has gotten into a "Me or You" mindset. He has lost any claim to his life when he decided to try and take yours for money.

To think otherwise is barbaric:

To act in any other way is stupidity and reckless.

Shooting the guy in the knee or the arm holding the gun should be sufficient.

Problem with both is you are risking the chance of him shooting you back, especially if you do not aim to kill. Hesitation will cost you your life, and could cost you the lives of others. That man is coming at you to kill you, not doing the same is utter stupidity.

Overpowering and subduing him should be a responsible gun-owner's top priority, not mercilessly gunning him down in cold blood.

Well for one if the man is pointing the gun at you that is not cold blood that is self defense. Second the top priority of any gun owner at that time should be killing him. Becuase giving him any chance to shoot back at you, gives him a chance to kill you. And as I said, the others around you. Trying to subdue or overpower him, shows a lack of responsability and judgement on your part, and it puts the lives around you on the line.

If some one has a gun aimed at you, and is just a finger moment away from ending your life. You do not have the time to think out of the box, or to attempt anything but the instant ending of his life. Giving that man even a split second to pull the trigger will only end your life.

You know, for most of us, simply killing someone because they pointed a gun in your face would just be stooping to their level. Based on your replies, though, I'm guessing that you don't think it's stooping.

I really cannot see the logic ( or lack of ) in that. You are not stooping to his level becuase you did not instigate the scene, you did not seek that person out to rob them with the possibility of killing them. You are only acting in self defense to make sure they cannot kill you or anyone else in the area.

To blow up the analogy a little, or perhaps by the greatest possible extent, take your pick, but if we were to say the same about nuclear weapons, i.e. most nations that have nuclear weapons are only going to use them in self defence, then that justifies the odd rogue nation have a nuclear weapon too. Just as 'a few million people' being the price to pay if nuclear weapons fell into the wrong hands, the US pays the price of a dozen people for every weapon sold to someone not responsible enough to have said weapon.

I know that banning guns outright would not be the way to go, simply because then only the bad guys would have the guns, which would be far less ideal than the current situation, but every time either Congress or a state tries to take measures to stop guns falling into the wrong hands, you get every card-carrying NRA member ranting and raving about the Constitution, because despite most of the Bill of Rights being irrelevant or just plain ignored, turning to a document written over 200 years ago for a completely different situation to what it is used in now is more important than common sense.

I really don't see what the problem is. American children should be learning a second language besides English. I think you're upset because he criticised the fact that people get so uppity about too many people not learning English. Now that on itself is a fair point. One shouldn't have in their country people that can't speak the language. And yet Americans, New Zealanders, British, Australians and South Africans are quite happy to live elsewhere and they don't speak the language of the country where they live period. We should, but we shouldn't be forced to learn one becuase of the laziness of people that shouldn't even be in this country.

See that is funny becuase by and large I have never believed that statement. I can understand going on a vacation to another country, and not learning the language. That is why we have so many different language pamplets in places like Disney Land and what not. But if you move legally to another country, by and large people learn to speak the language there and integrate into the country. Infact I believe that for many countries you have to actually learn the language to gain citizenship, I know that is the way it is here. Problem is that we have so many Illegals that are coming over here believing this is Mexico Part 2. And doing nothing to integrate. That it becomes incredibly frustrating. So instead of actually dealing with the illegals who unlike what Obama says, WONT LEARN ENGLISH. He believes we should learn Spanish to facilitate these people who do not deserve to be over here in the first place.

There was nothing that Obama said to be that angry about. Period.

Yeah there was, how we need to learn Spanish to help the Illegals who shouldn't be here. That he is embarassed of Americans. And how he cannot understand how people in this country want to have a English first initative.

You have no idea how furstrating and disgusting it is to hear this man talk about how we need to learn Spanish just so that we can help people who should not even be here

Edit: Sorry if I sound so angry over this, but you have to realize how frustrating it is to see everyday how Illegals refuse to intigrate into a society that they shouldn't even be in, in the first place. And then have Obama tell us, that we should learn Spanish becuase of the laziness of these people.

Unfortunately, for some of us, that is an economic reality. You see, I'm planning to become a teacher. If I plan to teach anywhere other than my hometown, I will essentially need Spanish to be marketable. It's not just illegals; some Mexican-born naturalized citizens who followed the process just never learn English, even though taking an ESL class is a required part of said process. I've read stories of legal immigrants who literally just sit in ESL classrooms for six weeks, demand their paper to be signed, and leave with absolutely no knowledge gained.

It's not that I'm happy about it. I like English. Heck, I like German. I do not like Spanish. For me, though, it's a harsh reality.

Regardless of how I actually feel about learning Spanish (learning a foreign language here is compulsory...boohoo, get off your asses and get some culture already), I'd hardly call Mexico a 'third-world country', considering it is considered developed by the U.N. and has a high HDI rating. Meeting the actual criteria, and seeing the place are two different things. The poverty line differs from country to country. There are millions in the US that live in relative poverty. Relatively, there are more in relative poverty in Mexico than in the US, but I'd imagine there is little absolute poverty in Mexico. The fact is, it is unjustifiable to call Mexico a third-world country. I'd wager you to go to Mexico, then go to any African nation like Sudan, which isn't even the bottom ten, and then you'd see a real third world country. Mexico is far more developed and I'd guarantee any Mexican would be offended if you called their homeland an impoverished third-world nation.

Anyway our Honorable Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has made news today. With Democrats slowly beginning to switch sides as the poll numbers mount against her. The only two that will eventually be left is Obama and Pelosi. One of which, is starting to sound like a raving lunatic.

"This call for drilling in areas that are protected is a hoax, it’s an absolute hoax on the part of the Republicans and this administration" Nancy Pelosi on July 10th 2008. When Gas Prices are at $4.10

Hmm I really don't think either party has a real plan. The fact is oil is going up because speculators play the market and also the increasing fears between Israel and Iran are not going to help anyone. And as the year goes on the United States will enter another winter and prices will go up and up and up. Anything the government in the US could do is what 1 year maybe two or more years away anyway? Anyway, he said what a lovely place it was and how South Africa looked at Zimbabwe as an example of hope. That's not the case anymore. One of the richer African countries are now in serious trouble. And all this starting because Mugabe wanted more blacks to own farm land. The problem, was the way they went about it. New Zealand has had a number of white farmers formerly from Zimbabwe moving here.

Things could have been sorted out in allowing blacks to get some land back, but the way they went about it kicking whites off their land was wrong. It allowed violence and unrest to come and ultimately in doing so they haven't improved the lives of most blacks. Things are certainly worse now.

I agree, but as much as we can support the Georgians, nothing short of direct intervention would give Georgia any chance of repelling the vast might of Russia's army. At best, giving them supplies will prolong the conflict, lead to more Russian casualties and give the Georgians a better chance against the Separatists. Still, it is better than no help at all, but realistically the Russians will only be stopped by the UN.

I doubt the UN will stop them. And to quote Trey "This means Russia is trying to put the Soviet Union back together again, a little piece at a time."

We can hope to put peace keepers in there, but that wont stop Russia. And really what is scary, is that Russia's excuse, is the same one Germany used to go after the Chechs, at the beginning of WW2.

There is one way I see the world getting into this, well atleast NATO and the EU. That being a major oil pipeline for Europe goes through Georgia. If Russia destroys it, the EU is majorly f'ed when it comes to oil.

Edit: the NYT is now reporting that Russia has advanced past the South Osseta region and is now heading toward the major Georgia city of Gori. It also has broken the Georgia Cease Fire, and has shown that Russia is not satisified with Georgia pulling out of South Osseta ( which they have done ). Now it looks like Russia either wants to take out the Pro Western President, dismantle the Georgia military, or completely take over the country.

Either way Russia's action in moving past South Osseta and passing the cease fire line, have proven that they are not satisified with just South Osseta.

Man, the big man upstairs obviously has something to say about Florida.

From New Orleans repeating deadly levee mistakes (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080823/ap_on_re_us/katrina_repeating_the_past):

Tyrone Marshall, a 48-year-old bread vendor, is one person who doesn't believe he's going to flood again.

"They've heightened the levees. They're raised up. It makes me feel safe," he said as he toiled outside his home in hard-hit Gentilly, a formerly flooded property refashioned into a California-style bungalow.

Yeah... height doesn't matter much when the levees break. Of course, the 50+ levee breaches that occurred when Katrina struck couldn't possibly happen again, right?

BBC News Girl wants to show the Humanity of the Taliban (http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article1602644.ece#OTC-RSS&ATTR=News)

See this kind of stupidity is a special brand, and I would say we need to make sure she doesn't have children or reproduces in any way. There is no humanity with the Taliban, even if you take away the events after 9/11 and just focus on the time between their rise in '94 and their destruction in '01 there is no humanity with them. They are thugs and bastards that destroyed the lives of women and girls in the name of extreme Islam.

I actually commend Doucet. There are so few people in this world with the heart to say what she said...

Her reasons for saying it, I don't know. But on the off-chance that she was authentically speaking out of compassion, then I'm glad she did so.

The problem is that what she is saying, is out of pure stupidity.

The world outside of Afghanistan really has no idea the kind of horrors brought on the Afghan people by the Taliban. And the sick disgusting way they treat women. Which I find particuarly ironic, becuase if she were in Afghanistan in the 90s, and she had said something that the Taliban didnt like, she would have been beaten to death.

There is a movie out, the first movie produced, directed, and stared by only Afghanis called Osama. The name has nothing to do with Osama Bin Laden. But is a true story and the forced male name of a 12 year old girl, who's father has just died. With out any other male member of the family to work or even "lead a woman through the streets". Her mom dresses her up like a man, and has her going to work.

Eventually the Taliban discover her, they beat her, humiliate her, and then force her into a slave marriage with a 40 year old man.

You can probably find this movie on Amazon or most Blockbuster Videos. It really shows the "Humanity" of the Taliban.

My point is that just because the Taliban is too blinded by their extremist beliefs and their insane perversion of an already-sketchy practice (religion) to show humanity doesn't mean that they lack it altogether.

Think of the people who deserve to have a solid gold statue made in their images. Does a great leader like Abraham Lincoln come to mind? Maybe a saint like Mother Teresa? (Actually, she'd probably roll over in her grave.) Perhaps that guy who stopped the tanks in Tienanmen Square would be a worthy choice, or even one of the millions of rescue workers who have died over the years saving someone else's life.

You probably wouldn't think of Kate Moss (http://news.yahoo.com/s/eonline/20080828/en_celeb_eo/26366).

They also have a better Governor now which is making a very very big difference. Although they still need to get rid of that utterly stupid Mayor. But atleast now they are being completely pro active in their approach. Although I still fear were going to have looters after wards and gang members shooting at aircraft just like in Katrina.

Uh, no, because the lowest point on record was last September, at the end of last summer. Since this summer has yet to end, and obviously ice melts faster in the summer, we could break that record this year. And even if we don't, it's going to take more than one year to establish a recovery trend.

Re: password-changing, hey I didn't even know you could use spaces in passwords. But those bank workers really have nothing better to do, eh? Shouldn't passwords be in encrypted databases anyway? How strange.
