View Full Version : [GAME] LINGO, VERSION 16!! (A.A.)

Magmar
28th August 2007, 07:46 PM
Game Play

The game is like MasterMind, except with words, usually 5-12 letters long. There's a given word with a given amount of letters, and everyone guesses it. The person in charge each round rates the guesses with how many letters are in the correct places (right), how many letters are in the word but not the right places (misplaced), and how many not at all (wrong).

Say I've come up with the secret word "cow". I'll tell you "Three letters". You guess "two". Someone else guesses "oar". A third person guesses "the".

I'll return the results as:
Two: 0-2-1 (None correct, two misplaced letters, one letter is irrelevant to the word.)
Oar: 0-1-2
The: 0-0-3

Using that logic, you could recognize that two of the letters in "two" are found in the word; a third letter, which may overlap with the original two, is possibly misplaced. The letters in "the" are not found in the secret word, so you know that the "t" in "two" is not in the secret word. So "w" and "o" are found in the secret word.

Following that logic, you know that it must be "o" from "oar" that is also in the secret word. Since the "o" cannot fall in the first or third slot, you can discern that "o" is the second letter. And since "w" cannot be in the second slot, it must be either in the first or third.

Your word is either _ o w, or w o _. All other letters presented are not in the word.

Game play continues until somebody properly guesses the word. That person then runs the next round of Lingo.

Rules

1. I do use a checker to verify how many right, wrong and misplaced. Please try to work them out on your own rather than search around online for a puzzle solving program. That's cheating and it kills the fun and challenge.

2. You may guess as many times as you like in each puzzle, but only guess one word at a time, and do not post twice until I have posted with the reply to your original word.

3. Choose words that are in the English language, not hyphenated or spaced, and try not to make the words too obscure. Don't use proper nouns, as they are not universal.

HOWEVER: When guessing, you may use a proper, one-word noun, like Wednesday.

Also, words have to be verifiable through an official English dictionary or thesaurus as real words that are not classified as "archaic" (i.e. talketh).

4. You score one point for each solved puzzle. I have the old score table, don't worry! I'll present it after this round.

The official Lingo Calculator™ by Lady Vulpix can be found here! (http://forboards.prophp.org/lingo.php) (That's how I check the 1-2-0 etc.) No it won't help you since you don't know the original word.

Alright. The next word will have 7 letters.

How about the word BIOFUEL?

Inferno_Dragon

How about the word ABILITY?

Zak
2nd February 2008, 09:59 PM
Alright

It's been a while since I touched on this game, but I have a question about the rules, cause there's one part I don't remember writing, and I kind of have an issue with...

# 3. Choose words that are in the English language, not hyphenated or spaced, and try not to make the words too obscure. Don't use proper nouns, as they are not universal.
# HOWEVER: When guessing, you may use a proper, one-word noun, like Wednesday.
# Also, words have to be verifiable through an official English dictionary or thesaurus as real words that are not classified as "archaic" (i.e. talketh).

I dunno if you guys decided on this since the last time I touched this game, but I made it clear that you can guess ANY word as long as you didn't make it up. Like, not only proper nouns, but like slang terms or commonly used slurred versions of words like "helluva". Or like star wars or LotR or HP terms... yadda yadda yadda, basically as long as the guess comes up on google a lot then it's fine. In a nutshell, it should be okay to verify words via google and not some dictionary or thesaurus. Like if you guess a random combination of letters that looks like it will help but you made it up, for instance... "isngyru" then it should not pass.

Also, as for words to actually USE, it was also okay to use words in that range, but not reccommended. Or rather, if you're gonna use an outsider-word not in English or proper noun, to have some common sense in choosing one that at least a lot of people have heard or would know, like "Pokemon".

So did you add that rule recently or something or just assume it? Otherwise can we change it back to the above?

Lady Vulpix
3rd February 2008, 07:07 AM
I don't know, sort it out with Magmar. He was the one who revived the game and wrote the current rules. I don't mind either way.

ability: 0 right, 1 misplaced, 6 wrong.
alright: 0 right, 2 misplaced, 5 wrong.

mr_pikachu
3rd February 2008, 12:42 PM
For an odd one, let's look at isthmus.

Lady Vulpix
3rd February 2008, 02:27 PM
Is that an odd isthmus? It could be an even one.

isthmus: 0 right, 3 misplaced, 4 wrong.

mr_pikachu
3rd February 2008, 03:02 PM
Bleh. What about Kakunas?

This prompts the eternal question of the proper way to pluralize the names of Pokemon. Yes, it's an eternal question! Eternal, I tell you!

Lady Vulpix
3rd February 2008, 03:15 PM
You could always ask the people at Nintendo.

kakunas: 0 right, 2 misplaced, 5 wrong.

That reminds me of one of the first topics I saw on TPM: "Female Eevees and male Vulpixes?" (It was posted by someone who was trying in vain to get those pokemon.)

Zak

Inferno_Dragon
3rd February 2008, 03:56 PM
How about the word TSUNAMI?

Lady Vulpix
3rd February 2008, 06:38 PM
It's a nice word as long as it's used to refer to my vaporeon and not a catastrophe.

Usurped?

mr_pikachu
8th February 2008, 02:41 PM
I believe the rule is that guesses can use fictional characters/ideas, and that only solutions are at question right now. Keeping that in mind, I'll seek the Cthulhu.

Lady Vulpix
10th February 2008, 02:42 PM
Posts! *Grabs them.*

usurped: 0 right, 2 misplaced, 5 wrong.
cthulhu: 0 right, 0 misplaced, 7 wrong. You were lucky. Why would you want to seek Ctulhu? O_o

The answer is starfish. Very impressive Gabi, it didn't take you very long to figure out the answer. Good job.

Lady Vulpix
7th March 2008, 07:05 PM
It wasn't very hard after cookbook discarded C, K, O and B, and then other words discarded V, E and D, and then N too, and made it clear that A and T were in the word, but only one of each, and there were only 2 places in which the A could go, and the word either ended with G or had I as its 6th letter... And I could go on, but I'm on vacation and left my deduction sheet at home.

Thanks, Christen!
