View Full Version : Favourite VG Music

As is often the case, when I have an obsession, I jump onto TPM to get it out there. Today's obsession, video game music! There's been some great stuff over the years, from the plinky bouncy tunes of yesteryear to the fully orchestrated pieces of today.
I reckon it might be neat to compare everyone's favourites! Could be a good way to come across new stuff you'd never heard before, eh? Beware. Some really wanky descriptions by me to follow.

Corneria (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eclAC0JQJYk)
Star Fox (SNES) - 1993
Hajime Hirasawa
I've made it no secret that this is one of my favourite VG tunes of all time, it's just so incredibly appropriate for what it's supposed to be, and downright kickass in its own regard. Star Fox was meant to wow us visually and hook us into a new 3D world when it came out. Lord knows I was impressed at the time. After the creepy opening music for the deployment of Andross' troops, the powerfully militaristic title screen music, and the light, pensive tones of the options screen (see how many adjectives I can throw out), it almost comes as a shock to your system.
This dynamic, 'let's-go' kind of tune (which builds well in time with the Arwings leaving the hangar) keeps that feeling of conflict consistent with the war you're about to fight, but it brings it in a new context; you're flying this sweet-as 3D spaceship and shooting things as never before, and you're cool as all hell for doing it. Later levels can hammer home the intense battle, right now's the time to assert this newfangled-looking game. The fact it made the cut for Brawl remixes truly makes me feel as though justice has been done, because if this tune fell to the wayside, the whole collection would be sour to me.

Jib Jig (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lg9M0h1WVyA)
Donkey Kong Country 2 (SNES) - 1995
David Wise
Though a forgotten piece in the face of the more popular Stickerbrush Symphony, Jib Jig is, in musical form, what DKC2 is - an adventure against a crew of pirates. Sure, by the time you're halfway through the game you've gone through bogs, volcanoes and rollercoasters and have more or less forgotten that this game has something to do with pirates, but for now, you're on the deck of a windswept pirate ship, throwing piratey-crates at piratey-Kremlings. As suggested by my opinion of Star Fox's Corneria, I'm big on an early gaming tune really setting the tone for the events that will follow, and once again this is an appropriate piece. With its Riverdance-like melody, playing in an almost hopeful tune, it gets the 'setting sail' theme down to a tee.

Lava Reef Zone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wo_4R17gYSY)
Sonic & Knuckles (Genesis) - 1994
Artist/Composer amiguous - could be one of many. Need to look into that further
Though simpler than other pieces on my list, this one still holds merit, a nice piece for the subterranean volcano motif.

Dire, Dire Docks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqcPSbkS9TQ)
Super Mario 64 (N64) - 1996
Koji Kondo
For many of us, Mario 64 gave us our first fully-fledged expansive 3D universe that we could explore and delve into. And while the levels were fun and challenging, few were as immersive and creepy as Jolly Roger Bay (Dire, Dire Docks be damned). We were planted in this tiny little area with a little bit of sand and a lot of water before us. So in we went, and the deeper we delved into the ocean the more the music built, music so soothing and yet haunting in a way. We went all the way down to the bottom, unsure of how deep Mario could go before drowning, until we came across a sunken pirate ship. Then, OMFGZ UNAGI THE EEL. That sumbitch scared me so bad I left the level right there and then. A perfect representation of the music itself, Unagi was frightening and yet somehow beautiful. Add then the up-tempo rhythm that accompanies the underground cave, and you've got all the bases covered in a such a small level.

Robo's Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmY2wf7T428)
Chrono Trigger (SNES) - 1995
Nobuo Uematsu
Despite having never played Chrono Trigger in all my life, this is the music that actually provoked me to make this topic. While looking at NeoGAF's shocking video game facts topic, (Miles Prower... MILES PER HOUR... wtf you're telling me that in 16 years I never noticed that??) I curiously followed a link claiming that Robo's Theme from Chrono Trigger seemed to be pretty much the same tune as Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up. I listened, and yeah it does, but I don't care anymore. I just love this piece and can really picture the underdog nature of Robo with this piece behind him... I want to play Chrono Trigger now. Just because of this music. That's right.

In relation to the DKC2 Country Music DragoKnight, your choice is the sad one :( It's great, but not that fun.

The Rollercoaster Levels rock - http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=MEcNfB7sY68&feature=related

However, in ports, they took away the scream in the background. It's my fave part!

DKC2 Pick - Bramble Scramble http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=CaMcOo-k23U&feature=related

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=t99pFHNLovw&feature=related This is also epic music that scared the shit out of you when a giant skeleton is behind you :(

The Ice Music was wonderful - http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=S8Z8T3skJkE&feature=related

Ack, all these games I've never played! I see your games, and raise you: FINAL FANTASY! Who's surprised? Eheh. Also, my descriptions are rubbish. You have been warned.

Find Your Way (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kia3MaNO60) // Final Fantasy VIII
Nobuo Uematsu
Well, this tune is the sole reason I got into game music. XD At times, it reminds me of the sad music in Beauty and the Beast where it's talking about Beast's curse and all. It's playing during the part of the game where you're off to find a new GF, Brothers, and the maze that it's in is easily one of the most annoying ones I've EVER done. But I cracked it myself, without guides, and I was sooo happy. :D

Otherworld (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqJYXoC1OQc) // Final Fantasy X
Nobuo Uematsu feat. Bill Muir on vocals
For this song, I stuck on the actual opening video that it goes with, in an attempt to woo people over to the FFX side, ehehe. I mean... just look at it! *pets* So shiiiiiny... And look, there's AURON! Squee!
And the song! Wow. It's like, brilliant. A bit on the heavy side, so be warned anyone who doesn't like hard rock with slightly growly lyrics. XD

Sending to Another Dimension (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87HOIyequ4U) // Final Fantasy X
Nobuo Uematsu
Well, the "words" to this song will be familiar to ANYONE who's ever played FFX. It's like, the prayer for the world. This version is my favourite cos it has extra atmosphere in it, and it has such pretty vocals and backing music. Plus it's from such a sad part of the story, it pretty much gives me goosebumps. And the FMV's awesome.

Opening Movie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yS4yAr4PXtw) // Vagrant Story
Hitoshi Sakamoto
This is the opening tune thinger that plays on the menu screen. Vagrant Story's not really a game many people seem to have heard of, which is a shame cos it's bloody brilliant! This song is similar to many from FFXII, since both games have the same composer, so I won't put up anything from XII.

Creeping Shadow ~battle with the colossus~ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tA9tAPg5iF4&feature=related) // Shadow of the Colossus
Kow Otani
My utter favourite of ALL the colossus themes. Plus, I reallllly love this colossus, too (it's the big fucker in the lake, for anyone who's wondering). The music reminds me of parts of Lord of the Rings, actually. It's got that quietly eerie feel to it. Very pretty.

AAAND FINALLY;

Battle Music 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfNxSPSldS8) // Devil May Cry 3
The Time Has Come (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLBAFJWbd30) // Devil may Cry 4
Shawn McPherson, of Hostile Groove // Jason Arnold of Hypnogaja
I know, I know, what an unoriginal name! This closely beats Battle Music 1, purely cos of the lyrics, hehe. The battle music in DMC is really sort of... well, almost dancy I suppose. It has kinda repetitive riffs, and often lovely guitars, and Capcom get cool people from heavy metal bands I've never heard of to do the lyrics. Lyrics in Time Has Come are INFINITELY better than any of the other DMC songs, though. It makes battle really addictive in these games, cos the music's so damn good, hehe.

Here it goes:

Psycho Fox - Intro and Level 1 (SMS) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgJNaLo2uH4)

The first game I ever played, and the music haunts me to this very day.

Chrono Trigger - Lucca's Fanfare (SNES) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubagNlut_lE)

A classic fanfare. All the FF ones are overrated: this is the king of all fanfares!

Sonic the Hedgehog - Labyrinth Zone (SMD) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSKgprdDRTY)

A pretty funky tune for a pretty hard zone, especially since you keep drowning.

Sonic the Hedgehog - Star Light Zone (SMD) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mqmN6mw4R8)

Come on! This has to be everyone's favourite Sonic zone!

Sonic the Hedgehog - Jungle Zone (SMS) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyuZ703CFRY)

My personal favourite zone from the SMS version of Sonic. I loved this zone.

Sonic and Knuckles - Flying Battery Zone (SMD) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_T7hdIh-gtw)

I really like this tune from Sonic and Knuckles, more so than Lava Reef :P but all the music from S&K was awesome, really.

Donkey Kong 64 - Jungle Japes (N64) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W928muwER5E)

A very upbeat jazzy tune and the perfect way to begin your DK64 adventure!

Banjo-Tooie - Glitter Gulch Mine (N64) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UnlMwW8nyI)

All the BK music rocks, so I picked this one since it is pretty fun.

Eh, I'm bored now. If I think of more stuff, I'll come back.

I like Jib Jig.

Spring Yard Zone - Sonic the Hedgehog (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDd_GlynA6A&feature=related)
When I play this, I don't know whether to go through the level or put my controller down and bob my head to the music. Shoot, why couldn't this be in Brawl?

Sanctuary - Kingdom Hearts 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNAwNhlcYN4)
If I had to choose between this and Simple and Clean, then this would win. The other would be a very close second.

Theme of Love - MGS4 (Brawl version) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zE_xZdI3s60)
This is the only version I've heard but I love the part with the violin solo. I have to turn this up in My Music every time I'm about to play because my brother turns it off.

5th Race Theme - Uniracers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODRK0pFlWKc)
I don't if anyone else played this game, but this is one of my favorite racing games. The music matched the pacing of it.

Vengeance Is Mine (Radical Highway) - Sonic Adventure 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dtqgi3vYpx8)
Another song I wish was on Brawl. I can still picture the fighter jets trying to bomb Shadow.

The Blue Avenger

Let's see...

Vs. Miror B (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=WuhqoZvyntA) - Pokemon XD
One of the best battle themes to ever be in a Pokemon game, ever. Plus Miror B. is kickin'.

Vs. Dialga/Palkia (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=BUcdmlgL054) - Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
This is the other best Pokemon battle theme. The version mixed for Brawl is good, too.

Bothersome Guys (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=4Xju4bK8INU) - Mother 3
Mother 3 has some of the best music around, despite being a GBA game. I find this to be the epitome of battle music in the game, though all of them are fantastic.

Mr. Batty Twist (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=0m8FisxHJhM&feature=related) - Mother 3
This is a close second, if only for the Batman takeoff at the beginning.

Katamari on the Rock (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=bnRSF3kGzBY) - Katamari Damacy
So bizarre, but it's really fun to listen to. *shrugs*

Someday The Dream Will End (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1xRCjjiTR7I) - Final Fantasy X
I don't even own this game; I just heard this song while a friend was playing it. It's very beautiful.

Keeping Pace (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZdHxb3lX8s) - Paper Mario
Best boss fight in the game, with music to match. Starts out military sounding, then, as befitting Shy Guys, turns surprisingly cheerful.

Jungle Level Ver. 2 (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=4ousgs9BQLI&feature=related) - Super Smash Bros. Brawl
One of the best mixes in the game. Shame it plays on such an annoying stage.

Blademaster

There are many, many memorable video game themes - far too many for me to list.

But the ones I loved enough to put on my iPod are right here:

Bloody Tears (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvOR8ar-cNM&feature=related)
First debuting in the often-scorned Castlevania sequel Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, this song is probably THE definitive Castlevania theme. It starts out high-pitched, frantic, with a sense of impending danger, but it quickly evens out into an adventurous tune that perfectly accompanies the Belmonts' quest to hunt down and eliminate the dreaded Count Dracula.

One Final Effort
I can't find a link, but I think we all know this one -the theme of Halo 3. I've never played Halo (no XBox), but this song is beautiful. A well-orchestrated and suspenseful tune leading up to a dramatic silence...

"This... is the way the world ends..."

Conclude the ensemble with one of the most beautiful climaxes in video game music history and you've got yourself a song that does the Halo legacy great justice.

Techno Syndrome (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTWdm6RrpVE)
The legendary theme of Mortal Kombat. It has no real flow, no real rhyme or reason... But hey, neither does Mortal Kombat. It still rocks, though.

One Winged Angel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yn71hIsm0U8)
Perhaps the single most iconic song of the Final Fantasy series, Sephiroth's theme song combines doom and debonair in this charismatic tune. Like Techno Syndrome, it has a longer remix with different lyrics, and like Techno Syndrome, said remix is amazing, as well. Especially when imposed over Sephiroth's genocidal Supernova attack.

Sparking Meteor 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSpp-yvYKGA&feature=related)
The DragonBall Z Budokai 3 theme. Upbeat, catchy, and as full of vitality as Goku on ecstasy pills, this is one DBZ tune that you just can't help but love.

And one not from Limewire:

Butsutekkai (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHeM1-Td13M&feature=related)
The boss theme from the infamous shooter Ikaruga as well as the accompanying theme of the Mecha Birdo boss in the equally infamous freeware game I Wanna Be The Guy, this track has a reputation for being bored into modern die-hard gamers' skulls much like us old folks have tracks from games like Ghosts 'N Goblins and Ninja Gaiden rammed into ours. Fast-paced, dire, and preceded by a warning flash that tells you there is 'NO REFUGE,' Butsutekkai is undoubtedly one of the best AND worst shmup songs of the modern gaming era.

PNT510

FFX - To Zanarkand - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=7TntdZOQRR8&feature=related

The opening theme to Final Fantasy X and just an awesome piano theme.

FFVII - JENOVA - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=p506FVle4eM

Final Fantasy VII may have the best video game soundtrack out of any game. JENOVA stands as one of the best tracks.

Mario - Underground Theme - http://youtube.com/watch?v=Vml7cyoArok

Everyone knows the classic Mario underground music so I linked the version from new Super Mario Bros. because not as many people have played this version of the game.

Zelda - Zelda Theme - http://youtube.com/watch?v=UOa4tXG4EQo

My personal favorite song. The clip I linked too is a medley of the theme and how it changes from game to game.

I think for the record, pretty much any game from the N64 qualifies here...for some reason, they just had the best tunes. Goldeneye for example. Who could forget Cradle, for example (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKRANQ0cDjY)?

F-Zero and F-Zero X deserve a mention, mainly for Mute City (SNES) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqFXBV0Nkp4) and Mute City (N64) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9c3lrUtb19M).

Brawl has some awesome remixes of old tunes, such as Ice Climber (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Hy3MrobCs8g). Awesomely frantic to begin with, then a soothing melody, then frantic again. Haha.

Deviating away from consoles, Team Fortress 2's music deserves a mention, especially this tune (http://youtube.com/watch?v=mlXeqsZMoSY), since I love the way it starts out in a 60s sort of military theme, and builds up to a grand finale.

I don't think I need to mention Still Alive from Portal (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Y6ljFaKRTrI) since everyone and their dog must have heard this at least ten times already, even if they've never heard of the game. Still, in the context of the ending of the game, quite funny and catchy, although every fat dyke on Youtube has uploaded a video of themselves trying to warble it out, which is somewhat of a downside.

I love the Fire Emblem theme from Melee (http://youtube.com/watch?v=_BsPSOQA6tY) too.

Plus props to the intro to Diddy Kong Racing (http://youtube.com/watch?v=fQtzqqcET4M), the first N64 game I ever owned. This is the intro that introduced me to the weird and wonderful world of N64 gaming. I was ecstatic.

I dunno whether to take it as a sign of living in the past, or if it's just that ignored of a series, but I find it REALLY hard to believe no one's mentioned ANYTHING from Rockman/Mega Man. There is just too much goodness among the soundtracks of those games to even TRY to list even a fraction...

And then welcome to The World... I've found .hack to be quite the musical paradise too. Here, however, I can give a sampling of some of my favorites.

Castle Dungeon theme - .hack//Infection, Mutation, Outbreak, Quarantine
I can't explain exactly why I like this song so much. Maybe it's because the castle dungeons tended to be some of the more fun levels in the game (and sometimes the most annoyingly designed). Always fun to kick butt inside castle walls...

Location of Power: Battle with Tarvos - .hack//G.U.
The very first serious battle of the series, and the first time you get to break out the power of the Epitaphs. Admittedly Tarvos is a REALLY easy fight in the G.U. games, compared to in the originals, but at least you're fighting something with some decent attack skills as opposed to the pretty simple AIDA. The cutscenes before and after the fight are pretty good too. Also, as is the same with all the other Avatar battle themes, part of the original Phase Battle theme from the original games is spliced in, which makes for nostalgic goodness too.

"She": Battle with Macha - .hack//G.U.
Hello, old friends. The fight with Macha, albeit overloaded with mini-cutscenes, is a pretty dramatic fight. You're fighting the powerful combination of Endrance and Macha, once former World players Elk and Mia, and a lot is on the line. Definitely one of the better fights of the series.

I'm sure I'll think of more stuff later...

I was never a big fan of Mega Man, save for Mega Man X. Overdrive Ostrich rocked!

More of my favorites:

Dragon Roost Island - Brawl and LoZ: WW (http://youtube.com/watch?v=6kiNz3abGc8&feature=related)
Dragon Roost Island was one of my favorite Zelda places. The music is of the main reasons why. Has a Spanish feel to it.

Hill Top Zone - Sonic 2 (http://youtube.com/watch?v=vKUcIaGvSmw)
Someone should try playing this with a real saxophone. Nice and jazzy.

Smithy Boss Battle (1) - Super Mario RPG: LotSS (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=RQ3tshJyI4A&feature=related)
I've never beaten the game, but I've watched my brother beat it. I still remember those first few notes when he used that big pillar as his first attack.

Haha being that i'm not as savvy on with whatever code this forum uses, i can't put the link in like words. but yea, i've always thought the tetris type A music (Tetris, SSB:B). was amazing. haha i mean even though its an old school game, its hard to top this i my opinion. The remix by SSB:B took an old classic and made it even more awesome, if you ask me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMfoNbkgNY0
Legend of Zelda, Main Theme. putting aside the fact that this video game franchise is my favorite of them all, i just thing there's no topping this music. i love the orchestra feel to it. this is going to sound incredible corny, but hearing the music makes me think back to all the games, and just how great each one was.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=3qu2IB7mykU
Pokémon Gym Leader Music. haha just great music. i've had some great gym battles over the years; from ones where i rolled over the gym leader with no problem to marathon battles that involved just wearing down pokémon. this music really made each one memorable.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=zkAXOcOptJE
Sonic, Emerald Hill Zone. ok, so it might just be the first zone, but its still cool music haha.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=VTFHhpZl3Uk
Super Mario Brothers, starman power. i don't know if this counts, but i always thought that the music that accompanied getting a starman was pretty cool. nothing else in the game sounded like it in the game, it was upbeat and like i said it just sounded cool.

Dance with the Balamb-Fish (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xD_sK2QVTOQ) ~ Final Fantasy VIII ~ Nobuo Uematsu

I like in general musics from games I like. Except Bomberman World, Tekken or Quake perhaps.

Super Mario Bros. 3 Underworld

Sorry, but I prefer this to the original one introduced in the first SMB. Catchy.

The Main Theme Of Final Fantasy VII

This sounds great when you discover a new town or see sea or a mountain appearing from a distance. It sure has one somehow odd or something part, but still.

The Extreme

Final the final form final of final the final boss final in Final Fantasy final VIII final. It goes around and around in my head, the orchestral and piano effects rule.

Might as well chuck something else up - Frankly I have no clue how this game jumped into my head, but it did and I feel compelled to play it again. My SNES controllers may be stuffed, but at least my Super Scope is still working. :D

First level kickass music theory returns. Though this game features some good ones, this is still my favourite. It holds the same dynamic kickass feeling of Corneria, but puts it in a much more foreboding context. For a better effect, you need to see the game in motion, with bullets flying and mechs running through war-torn cities at 100 kms an hour, screeching as chunks of armour fly off (easily found on Youtube), but for the full effect, you need to be seeing those ugly bastards through a Super Scope. Boo-yeah.

The Tragic Prince - Castlevania - Symphony of the Night

Without a doubt one of the coolest tunes of any game. I used to go to the area this song played and fight stuff just for the music.

Final Fantasy VII Boss Music

One of my favourites of all time. I always wanted this as a ring tone on my cell phone, y'know, before you could just put MP3's on them and stuff.

Probably add more when I think of them, but those are my favourite two.

I can't agree more with Little_Pikachu's choice of Castlevania music. The series has generally an awesome score but Tragic Prince from the Clock Tower stage stood out in particular.

I enjoy up-tempi boss battle themes and there's a nice selection of not so well known ones I like a lot:

From Final Fantasy USA a.k.a. Fintal Fantasy: Mystic Quest a.k.a. Mystic Quest Legend the final boss battle theme:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=er0cGN8cO6w

From Lufia 2, the general boss battle theme:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbLSCfwDjxE

From Lufia 2 yet again, the Sinistral battle theme:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZzkenF0XfU

Another game with great music is the Metroid series. Especially the earlier games had a great score with memorable music.

From the original Metroid on the NES in all its 8-bit glory, the Kraid's Lair theme:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UGKCvIrF_o

And from Super Metroid, the Lower Norfair theme:

A lot of great songs have already been mentioned, so I'll list others for the sake of originality:

Mount Coronet Peak (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oezvU_s534), Pokémon Diamond/Pearl
Fast-paced, epic, and a great prelude to the chaos you're about to face on Spear Pillar; sounds a lot like the intro theme to the game, odd enough.

Love Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGf2b1H91JA), Metal Gear Solid 4 (the original, classy!)
Assuming we have a few people on here that browse the *chans, a lot of you can probably recall this without having to actually playing the game. Despite that, it's one of those weird, slower songs that stick with you over time. And as for its relevance to the Brawl version, the first vocal parts match up with the solo violin.

Radical Dreamers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpdttbuG_r4), Chrono Cross
As beautiful as it is mellow; one of the reasons I started picking up the guitar in the first place.

Keeping Pace (General Guy battle) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9h_KJNuDKo), Paper Mario
Best. Boss battle theme. Ever.

Twinrova (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUW8ManjkuU), Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
My favorite boss battle out of the entire series; not to mention they get their own theme. I remember my first play through the game and hearing the music, and the first thought that came to mind was "Ah-ah-ah, you're not done yet!"

Sheik's Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyZHOKGBwY4), Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
A simple, alluring harp theme with some nostalgic qualities to it. Classic.

Plenty more I'll mention later.

March of the Empire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sen6wouutp4)
Freedom Fighters, Jesper Kyd

This song was just really intense in making you feel the scale of the game, and the story. A little redundant, but most Russian music kind of is, but I still love it.

Awaken (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cU6kW0ZaqRY)
Devil May Cry 4, Tetsuya Shibata (And some other people)

The scene it is set is good, but I think it more sets its own scene, even without the visuals helping you. Intense and whatnot. I'm not good at varying my words with praising things.

And because I'll all about the nonsensical..

Ragtime Warfare! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCYc3OMxAyY)
Call of Duty 4...

I thought at first this meant "ragdoll" because I only gave a quick glance to it. I mean, after Freedom Fighter's ragdoll cheat, I was certainly up for something like that! I still use it occasionally, actually.

LP's Castlevania music got me to thinking, I've unfortunately only ever played one Castlevania game, but there was still music that stuck out in my head. Given my past selections, no bonus points awarded for guessing which part of the game it plays during...

Awake (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5I5mUeRKOhg)
Castlevania: Circle of the Moon (GBA) - 2001
Likely either Sotaru Tojima or Hiroshi Mitsuoka
So the music in Castlevania is dark and foreboding, right? Not necessarily. After you've taken what should have been a fatal fall deep into the catacombs of Dracula's castle, you've got a loooooong way ahead of you to go. And though most segments are quite dark and eerie, the game starts off with a decidedly upbeat and epic tune. It still remains my favourite from the game.

I have no idea what some of the name of these songs are, but my fave video game songs are...

The battle theme from FF 7
The Kingdom Hearts theme songs (both): Sanctuary and Simple and Clean
The theme from the Halo games
The love song in FF 10: Suteki da Ne
The songs from FF X-2: Real Emotion and 1000 Words
The theme from Zelda
The theme from Metal Gear Solid

Well, that's about all I can think of now. All of them are awesome songs!

Links will come later

Wandering Flame(Final Fantasy X) The most beautiful game track ever in my opinion. It sets the mood for the scene PERFECTLY and even without the scene, it is beautiful.

Venus Lighthouse Theme(Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age) This theme also greatly sets the mood, as you get that feel of urgency.

Hollow Bastion(Kingdom Hearts) Yet again, perfectly on its place.

Apoji Islands theme(Golden Sun: The Lost Age)I cannot really express why I like these tracks so much. This one probably because it is so upbeat and it stuck in my head for a long time.

World Map(Final Fantasy III) My favorite world map theme, all time.

Game Corner(Pokemon Diamond) I didn't like the games. However, when I walked into the Game Corner, I just ran around and played the slots seriously for the first time ever in a Pokemon Game, just so I could listen to this song. ITS FRICKIN AWESOME

Song of Storms(Legend of Zelda series) Catchy and just cool.

Scars of Time(Chrono Cross) Best intro theme, together with the one from GS TLA.

And there are a lot more that I could write down, like various music from The World Ends With You, more KH and GS music, but these deserve it most imo.

Kingdom Hearts
Soon after being consumed by god knows what form of darkness and thrown into a random unknown world, it's certainly nice to know that the particular place you've landed is a quaint, peaceful little town. Such a pleasant place is appropriately accompanied by very simple music that, although not foreboding, holds a kind of melancholy undertone to it. It doesn't get old, even when you're walking around for hours trying to get everything done. ...Well ok, maybe a little old, but not by much.

Roger and Me (Tristram Village) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2evIg-aYw8)
Diablo
In a dark, dangerous world of gruesome horror, few are at ease. Practically your only bastion of civility is present within Tristram Village, and even there, people are living in constant fear and woe. And, true to the world itself, this piece holds an incredible deal of tragedy and menace. It builds and diminishes, tearing into you with its simple base or delving into a complex mix of instruments and genres all placed in the one, as though building in its own desperation... Truly a brooding piece, if such a thing existed.

Sonic Heroes

I agree, I agree, and I call myself a Mario fan. Not only the tune is catchy, but the lyrics are cool as well. Like a laser beam my eyes on you! I associate it with certain girls as well. Yes, I'm weird. In fact, I hear The Extreme also in my head when I watch this one girl I have a crush on.

I did forget to mention that I love Katamari songs...

"Que Sera Sera" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFLJX-T7LPk) is just so jazzy and relaxing but with enough of a beat to keep you going as you play. It fosters eccentricity and creativity when I play.

"A Crimson Rose and a Gin Tonic" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2xVTE-2eik) isn't in English but I can dig it. This one's a bit more energetic than "Que Sera Sera", but is just as fun and fun-encouraging. It even has a bit of the jazz standard "It Don't Mean a Thing" in it.

I am in love with the synthesizers in "Lonely Rolling Star" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_QydNXI_ok) and I'm not ashamed to admit it. This is fantastic video game music, pure and simple.

There are others from the game that I listen to, but these are my top picks from the bunch.

Newest obsession (that kinda comes and goes) is Tetris Attack... Without going into too much detail, let me throw out some select tracks...

Blaze Stage (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENvAuUvrESU)
Just a sweet ass little tune that makes you get all fiery and rockin' - add to it the sound of Gargantuan Blaarg's constant roars (araaahh!!) and this is unforgettable.

Water Stage (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuLMrcFkGOc&NR=1)
One of the calmest tracks in all of gaming - a beautiful piece that I adore so much I hoped beyond hope that it'd appear in Brawl (it didn't... I can be happy that at least one track from this game made it in, even though I'm not so fond of the track itself), and then if you bring up the intensity a bit with the panic track for this level - it's like all the calm nature of the track has been turned on its head. Damn this game rocks on a musical level.

Also, Shadowfang Keep (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUmD0T-IYn4) from World of Warcraft...
By and large, I actually find much of WoW's music quite forgettable - until it comes to this piece, both creepy and epic. Fighting against the legions of enemies thirsting for your blood (or if you're like me, hanging back while a level 80 paly runs you through). ...Is it really this short, though? Damn, never realised.

Sparking Meteor 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSpp-yvYKGA&feature=related)
The DragonBall Z Budokai 3 theme. Upbeat, catchy, and as full of vitality as Goku on ecstasy pills, this is one DBZ tune that you just can't help but love.
.

I'm surprised you made this mistake Blade but that is the Budokai 3 theme NOT Super Survivor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfdgSf4qHjg) which is the theme music for Sparking Meteor/Tenkaichi 3. Giant difference bro! On another note Castlevania 2 was the first one I played so it actually took me time to get use to classic old school CV ^_^()
In any case awesome game that deserves far more credit ^_~

Most people have already posted a ton of shit that I'd have most likely posted myself so here's a few that slipped through the cracks:

Kiseki no Hono (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44LhmjHexSU&feature=PlayList&p=14DB59D8A3EF0BDC&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=9)
DBZ Burst Limit
While I personally didn't care for BL since it's just a rehashed and improved Budokai 1 (Tenkaichi has the better fighting system I think) this song was just perfect. It never seems right to me when anything Dragon Ball doesn't have the music done by Hironobu Kageyama.

X vs. Zero (remixed version) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWM0gy6CgLQ)
Mega Man X series
I always loved old school MM and the X series introduced an awesome new storyline. The early games hinted that X and Zero would one day have to fight each other and in one of the cooler plot twists I've seen in an old school series it's revealed that Zero is Dr. Wily's final creation. Therefore when the battle finally happens you've got X who is Dr. Light's final creation battling his friend and comrade Zero. The even cooler thing is story events in X5 determine how it unfolds. One of the best battle songs I've ever heard.

The Tanker Incident (Alert Theme) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgWCvcGr8PE)
Metal Gear Solid 2 (Act 1-Snake's Chapter)
MGS is another one of those game series known for having the right music to fit the mood of a scene or the action on screen. Of all the games from the original all the way up to this one I feel this was the best alert theme of them all. It really gives that urgent sense when you hear it. I tried finding the MGS4 version of this when you fight Ocelot in the 2nd part of the final battle since I think that's a better version. However try as I might no one has unloaded just that version by itself. Anyone care to try and find it? ^_~

Tank Theme from Left 4 Dead (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8SZFOeFE0Q)

Anyone who has played what is one of the finest PC games of modern times will recognise this. Once this theme starts playing, you know you're in serious trouble. It is the fanfare for the imminent arrival of one of video gaming's most powerful creatures. It cannot be stopped. It cannot be reasoned with, and it will not stop hunting you until either you or it are absolutely dead.

Also, More PC nostalgia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dAIhqQ_TjI&feature=related)

I just loved how this theme began, the beat to it, the clash between Asian Insturments of the scene, and the futuristic techno of the game. This game always has been and always will be my favorite game I ever played, and the music, was one of the best parts of it.

Deus Ex Main Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCk8ByyCsks&feature=related)

Phantasy Star (Classic):

Lashute Dungeon (Phantasy Star 3, once the area's true colours are revealed)

Sonic:

Angel Island Act 2
Rail Canyon
Mission Street

Super Mario:

The Mushroom Waltz (NSMB)
Bowser Battle (SMW, all three rounds)
Gargantuan Baby Bowser Battle (YI)
Rainbow Road (SMK and MK:DD stand out for me)
Float Castle (Yoshi's Safari)

Zelda:

The Great Sea is Cursed! (WW; I don't know why, but I always found this tune to be rather catchy around the first 1/3 of the game)
Stone Tower Temple (MM; both normal and upside-down)
Overworld Theme (ALttP)
Ganondorf Battle (OoT)

Kirby:

Both trakc for when you're on the Halberd in Revenge of Meta Knight as part as KSS/KSSU (I always preferred the latter one, for when you're getting close to the end, seems more dramatic)
Dark Matter 2nd and 3rd Phase (KDL3)
Rainbow Route (KATAM)

Tetrts:

Action Music B

Donkey Kong Country series:

Stickerbrush Symphony
Disco Train
Snakey Chantey
Fear Factory (DKC)
Rocket Rush (DKC3; SNES version)

One thing's for sure, when you grow up with mostly 16-bit games, they can be hard to forget.

Sorry Blade but that website is totally wrong. Sparking Meteor is the name of Tenkaichi 3 in Japan and was never the name of a DBZ song in either the anime or a game. The Budokai 3 theme song is called Tokoton Tomaranai. It's English title is I Won't Stop 'Till the End. Go ahead and try typing the Japanese title into a You Tube search and see what you get. Gerudo Valley (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hy0aEj85ifY)
An obvious one that somehow hadn't been mentioned yet. This could be Zelda's greatest musical accomplishment (I see you, Song of Storms!), it just comes out of nowhere. In most areas, the music is presented in unison with its surroundings: an accompaniment, if you will. But Gerudo Valley's guitar piece just completely stands up on its own and says - 'LISTEN TO ME.'

Neon Night-Riders (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDGLLU3sm-k)
Turtles in Time is basically a 'pick any' gallery of amazing tunes, but this is the one I keep coming back to. It takes all of the awesome kickass synthesiser brawler tracks you've heard so far, and gives it a futuristic vibe that completely matches the tone of the level: riding on a hover board, fighting enemies, occasionally getting punched in the face by that one dick of a Foot Soldier who hits you and then disappears.

Id ~ Purpose (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bio99hoZVYI)
It's no coincidence that Fire Emblem Awakening, my favourite game of all time, was the one I was saddest to reach the end of. The writing was so sharp, so impeccable, that I had really grown to love these characters. Taking them into their final battlefield was bittersweet; an underdog tale of redemption. To wage wars against unfathomable odds, the perfect tune was required. And this... is it. It defies words, really. It is the encapsulation of your whole adventure up to this point, your struggles and hardships, that have all built to this one point... Go get 'em, team.

So as a child I didn't get new games often and when I did they were often strange Japanese games that few people had heard of because my father bought them for cheap at a gas station. One of the better games we had was Ys III. It's a side scrolling action RPG, a little bit like Zelda II. The one part of the game that really holds up to this day is the music. This song is the boss music which terrified me a child because I meant I was gonna spend the rest of the day dying against whatever room was in the back of the dungeon.

Anyway gonna leave this here....granted I normally try to find a video with the music isolated. However in this case I feel it's better served by having the scene in question along with it since it was very fitting for the (as of now) final chapter of the Max Payne series:

Perhaps we could make a playlist of TPMers' favourite gaming music. Does our Youtube channel exist anymore?
