For some reason evolved forms do not have certain breeding info but the baby pokemon (shall we say do). eg. Chikorita has breeding info but Bayleef and Meganium do not. Or Hoothoot has breeding info but Noctowl does not. They still have what pokemon are compatible to breed but they do not have the moves learnt only via breeding.

Awesome! It looks like you were able to find the Pokedex after all.

Hmm... using the box for navigation no longer seems to work, but manually changing the number in the address bar appears to be relatively effective. We ought to be able to get a lot done using this.

Great find, fp!

fp, stop for a bit. One of the other staff members just told me that we still have the information from the old Pokedex Project... that would almost certainly be easier to work with. I'll get back to you as soon as I've tracked down everything.

Thanks for all your help with this. I think we should continue to use this thread for discussing Pokedex data, but I don't want you to have to do any more unnecessary work.

EDIT: We may still need to use the archives... the Pokedex Project was never completed, after all, and I'm not yet sure what parts were left incomplete. I'll let you know.

OK LOL good to hear. Because quite frankly that is tedious work lol. Oh well if anyone does want to see all the other links. Simply copy the address and type in the appropriate pokedex number. Any of the latter ones I did should do the job.

Of note in regards to the Crystal locations, the majority of Gold/Silver pokemon tend to have details.

Edit: Well hopefully whatever data does exist is taken from what we already had and heres hoping with Crystal tutor moves and the like. Am happy to keep doing what I've been doing if the pokedex project material isn't up to date.

I'll put it this way... we definitely don't have anything from DP. That's going to be the hardest part, really... maybe we should start on that?

Yes. In regards to that. We have three choices really. Either someone is able to extract data from the game. Or we use Legendary Pokemon and Veekun, both of which have free resources that we use. In Legendary Pokemon's case there's heaps of data. May pay to contact him before we do so, but I can't imagine Arty2 having a problem. In regards to Veekun, he has pokedex information from Diamond and Pearl available. Basically raw pokemon data.

Now I favour the latter. As far as I know no one here so far seems to know much about extracting data. But one fact is evidently clear that we will need someone that is able to extract data. Because otherwise we will struggle immensely with the ranger games and the like where free resources just aren't available.

That is something we do need to consider.

Edit: Also we really can't afford to be dependent on other sites for information either. Not only do we look less professional. But if we can't do D/P/Pt how are we ever going to do 5th gen or other pokemon games?

Hm, sorry if this is a stupid question, but I've been thinking about it for a while during this project, and it's..

Can we really use information from the old website? I assume many people who have put the info there have left TPM.

OK, after typing this, I know it's a stupid question.

mr_pikachu
17th October 2008, 11:37 PM
No, it's a fair question. However, by putting the information on TPM in the first place they gave us permission to use it, releasing any claim they may have had to bar us from doing so. At that point, the information ceased to be the personal property of those users.

Edit: Also we really can't afford to be dependent on other sites for information either. Not only do we look less professional. But if we can't do D/P/Pt how are we ever going to do 5th gen or other pokemon games?

I have the game for Pearl. Tell me on how we can keep a lookout for the changes in Pokemon stats. Do I have to breed a pokemon from start by hatching the egg and start training it? What else do I have to keep track?

Also I have already mention earlier to regards to the walkthrough, I thought I had already mentioned that I will be available after 5th November to do it up?

Well at least it's helpful to see how it's in Bulbapedia so that we know what the site shouldn't be like.

True, but we obviously can't use their information without permission. We have most (if not all) of this stuff in our own records, so I think we should stick with that as much as we can and only request material from elsewhere if absolutely necessary. What does everyone else think?

Dark: Regarding me going to people for help... *shrugs* Contact me on November 5th and remind me to ask if you want to work on the walkthrough. ^_^

Yes that was my point. And I also meant that we should make it different enough.

Yeah, I knew that's what you were saying. I was mostly responding to the fact that it was from Bulbapedia... it was just easier to do it indirectly. :sweat2:

You cannot take information from other sites.

That should be paramount in this endeavour.

If you haven't heard we at the Pok้masters are working on restarting are main site, anyways we were wounding if we could use some of the Info from Bulbapieda for are Pokedex?

No, I hadn't heard. As far as the info from Bulbapedia goes, please set our usage license at the bottom of every Bulbapedia page. We already have policies for usage set up in that.

Um Brian that info I showed was the info we did not have regarding Bulasaur's moves in R/S/E and D/P/PT...

I am not comfortable using Bulbapedia's information in any way whatsoever. In particular in regards to a pokedex. The whole idea that has been done for years and years is you do your damn compiling and finding of data. Not copying it straight from another site and then sourcing it.

Now the pokedex is likely more accurate than other parts of Bulbapedia. But I can't possibly see how we can even think of using their information. How stupid is that going to look? Rather pathetic one would think.

Dependency on other sites for information can rarely if ever be a good thing. In the past TPM did not depend on other sites. Sometimes in regard to TCG and certain calculators and the like we used other site information or other sites skills. But we can't rely on it and shouldn't rely on it. If we are to succeed at all, we need to rely on the skills our members here at TPM have. Right now it would seem we lack people who are capable of extracting data from pokemon games. That does indeed put us at a disadvantage.

But eventually we need someone with such skills, because we need it for the ranger games, we need it for the mystery dungeon games and we likely need it in other areas as well.

----

On another front I received a memo via IRC by Arty2. People may know that he was once a member of these forums, was an aop (operator) in TPM's irc chatroom and is the webmaster of Legendary Pokemon. Arty2 is a capable person who has extracted data from pokemon games since 3rd Generation. Now he memo'd me because he was wanting to use the forums but because he uses free email address there are issues.

Here is the memo:

I was wondering if you could to some TPM mod on changing my forum account's (Arty2 also) email to arty2gr@hotmail.com because I have forgotten that password and the email on that account is no longer valid, and they haven't replied to my registartion problem support :/ Plus that new email seemed banned?

Now I know one can't use hotmail so I did send him a memo back saying only isp email addresses are allowed. (Mind you I'm not exactly sure of the rules regarding these things) Now I know that this isn't the forum to ask in regards to such things. But admins are notoriously difficult to get into contact at any time. I'll try and speak to Chris in regards to it at some stage.

The whole reason I even mentioned it here. Is that Arty2 is sure to have something interesting to say in regards to the TPM project. And could help us immensely in the acquiration of data extracted from the games etc etc etc. But as I honestly don't know his reasons that is all up in the air.

Get him to give us a ISP email address. Once we have the email, the staff will subsequently expedite to the admins.

I agree with firepokemon. I don't want to see 'This information is taken from Bulbapedia' in any Pokedex page at TPM. I know you have had hard time looking for the info, but TPM taking info from another site sounds no good. Other sites used to take info from TPM, not the other way around. If this post of mine doesn't seem as if I made this a question of honor or something, don't take info from Bulbapedia. We don't have top put 'This information is taken from Bulbapedia' on the site if we don't take information from Bulbapedia.

How secret is this project by the way? Our competitors may get ready as we speak, and improve their sites. How serious is this, is it like a fight over the Pokemon fans who want to get information from the web, or are we doing this for fun only?

Pretty sure the "ISP only email" idea is pretty lame.

firepokemon

Really we shouldn't worry about other sites, since they have little to fear by us. You know if this was 2003 or 2004 and we were resetting the site (with much info not the site we actually had in 2003) Yeah there would be something to fear since we still had a number of users and still had people watching us.

But its been years since we've had a mainsite and most new pokemon fans are not even aware of TPM. Their world is Serebii.net, Bulbagarden, Marriland, Smogon, Pokebeach, Psypoke, Pokezam, Cave of Dragonite, Pokecommunity and elsewhere.

We may have good ideas, but ultimately some site has it. In fact in regards to a locatordex, Psypoke and Veekun have things somewhat similar to what they have. With Psypoke they have world maps for the latest generations which show pokemon locations. Veekun has that built inside their pokedex. I wasn't actually aware of this until I went looking around recently.

Thing is we shouldn't worry about other sites, because we first need to build a site ourselves. A site that will have pokemon data but has to make sure to take steps and do things differently. Hence one reason to show our fanworks side of things etc etc. Our ultimate goal surely, is to keep these forums alive. That is what a new site can offer us. Anything else should be seen as a bonus.

Fist of all firepokemon, I only bought up the Idea of using Bubapida was one I knew we did not have the R/S/E or the DPPT info, and that we did not have a member that knew how to exact Information.

Also before you say I fucking Stole the Info your Dead Wrong I asked Archaic as in the head admin of Bulbapida and he told me to follow there Copy rights (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Bulbapedia:Copyrights)

And forgive me if I am wrong but did not we agree to not look like Serebii at all? So how the fuck do you think we well be able to pull it off if we are asking Arty2 for help if he is the very Person who heped Joe out with his Pokedex in the Fist place?

Sneaking back out of lurkyloo land, lalala...

I would like to point out that the reason the GSC evolved forms are missing egg move data is because, well, they're evolved and cannot legally hatch from eggs. You can breed for a Chikorita, but you can't breed for a Meganium. Therefore, the lack of egg move info is technically correct. That said, it is still incredibly useful to have the egg moves there anyway--if you're constructing a moveset for a Meganium wouldn't you rather just look at Meganium's page and see everything a Meganium can possibly learn instead of having to look at Meganium AND Chikorita? Even Veekun, which as far as I'm concerned is the superior Pok้dex in terms of the mainstream games, doesn't have egg move data for evolved Pok้mon because Eevee pulled the info directly from the games and, as I said, there are no egg moves for evolutions and therefore the data cannot possibly be there. He is looking to find ways to add that data anyway, and there's no reason TPM shouldn't either. If it has to come to that I suppose there's probably a way to add it manually, although obviously the ideal would be to automate everything using the raw data. Not sure how you'd manage that, as I don't know much about databases and programming or how easy manually adding bits would be.

Jeff

Sounds like a good idea, it would be nice to be able to see what a moves a pokemon can get through breeding even if it's an evolution. One clear issue here would be that, for example, Azurill's egg moves are different from Marrill's. So how do we handle situations like that? We could list only Marrill's egg moves under Azumarrill's entry, but the best thing to do would be to also list Azurill's egg moves under Marrill's and Azumarrill's entries. So some pokemon would have more than one set of egg moves, that's something we would have to keep in mind.

Charles, to me it doesn't look like FP is accusing you of stealing so cool off. He makes a good point. It wouldn't look good on us if all of our pokedex pages have "Source: Bulbapedia" written on them (as required by their licence). It would be better if we extract our own data, so I'm glad you're getting someone to help with that.

Yes I know that and Like I just said My Idea was stupid anyways, also Archaic told me he dose not how to exact data, my best guess is they use a Rom of the game but seeing how we have that *cough*Stupid Rule about not talking about them *cough* so I don't know if it's true or not, besides my computer is so messed up anyways I can't check even if I knew how...

but still I disagree with asking Arty2 for help since he helped Joe out with his pokedex I mean it would look stupid if we also put thanks Arty2 at the bottom of the Pokedex Pages...

Yes well I've been trying to work out how to extract data and to be honest I haven't had much luck. I'm closer to seeing how things work but not entirely there yet either. I don't even know if Arty2 is willing to help us or whatever, all I know is that he wishes to have access to these forums. Outside of that I don't have a clue.

I notice in Jeff's announcement the mention of Sgator and the pokedex project. From what I can reference from Jeff's statement is that Sgator had the information, he disappeared and with that the information also disappeared??

Jeff
25th October 2008, 08:26 PM
Yeah, that's how the pokedex project died. After sgator was close to finishing it, I guess no one wanted to start it over again. So if we want to guarantee that this project says alive, we can't put all our eggs in one basket.

firepokemon
25th October 2008, 08:33 PM
So the pokedex forum is largely useless. That is a shame, good thing I got the GSC pokedex from the old TPM site.

As for sharing the information, sure. But I also feel that I can trust anyone like Mr. Pikachu, you and others not to disappear on us either. And as for me, well, considering I've been here since 2000 and been banned numerous times and still stuck around, I am hardly going anywhere.

Jeff
25th October 2008, 09:26 PM
I wouldn't say it's completely useless to us. There is some info in there, such as the threads I just pulled over. And then there's this (http://members.shaw.ca/simoneng/pokedexproject/e2preview.html).

Dropbox (https://www.getdropbox.com) is pretty good for projects like this, FYI. It's basically Subversion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subversion_(software)) with a really nice, easy-to-use interface.
