Ladies and Gentlemen! Boys and Girls! Prepare to be marveled with this seasons edition of... TPM's MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL THREAD! This time led by the amazing (and much more handsome) Ghost!

This is the thread where you talk anything about baseball, or atleast somewhat relating to it. This year the updates will be in my hands, so expect things to run much more smoothly now that I am not obligated to a woman.

To start off, How about those Red Sox?

No, seriously though, How about those Yankees? Do they actually have a payroll? The money they just spent on Teixeria, Burnett, and Sabathia is probably more than all of us here on TPM combined will ever make. Doubled.

In more recent news, The Dodgers finally released Andruw Jones, The Red Sox signed Kevin Youkilis to a 4 year, 40 Million dollar extension, and Bartolo Colon was signed by the White Sox. Also, David Eckstein was signed by the San Diego Padres today.

Anyways, begin your discussion of baseball here. Now.

mr_pikachu
16th January 2009, 01:22 AM
Those Yankees... *shakes head sadly* What were they thinking with Teixeira? Meh. The sad thing is, for all the money they shell out every year, we've learned that payroll doesn't matter much at all.

What, you think I'm kidding? Check out this article (http://sports.espn.go.com/espnmag/story?id=3816824) by Peter Bernstein. He actually did a statistical regression analysis to show that the total team salary has only a slight effect on team success... in reality, a team's winnings are due almost entirely to something other than a paycheck.

Not only does baseball suck, this topic is also three months early even for spring training.

Bah. You're just jealous that the baseball thread's getting more attention now than your precious NFL topic.

It looks like the Giants are trying to take advantage of the weakened NL West and move into playoff contention (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/hotstove08/columns/story?columnist=crasnick_jerry&id=3837657). Note the use of the word "trying"... I rather doubt Randy Johnson would add much to any major league rotation at this point, and they've yet to clearly express any interest in Ramirez. Granted, they've acquired some stronger pitching, and their division has been laughable the last few years, but I'm not convinced they'll win 80.

Bonds (no first name needed due to infamy) is trying to prepare himself to play in spring training. Maybe he'll get his chance in a company softball league... I'm sorry, but any MLB team would be nuts to sign him.

A lot of potential free agent signings are being discussed right now. There are even rumors that Andruw Jones signing with the Braves or Marlins. Given his past success, I'd bet that someone will give him a chance. Then again, his recent history has been abysmal. It'll be interesting to see how it goes.

Moving to issues that concern my personal favorite, the Cardinals are... well, not making many moves (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?page=winterforecast/081107/cardinals) right now. That could be a problem. Kyle Lohse's signing wouldn't make up for another season-long absence for Carpenter, and that's still a definite possibility. They have a boatload of other free agents on the verge of sliding away, including two starters and three relievers. They have to bolster their staff, as that one the one element that kept them out of the playoffs last year. ...Well, that and one of the toughest divisions in baseball.

Even if St. Louis doesn't want to make any major moves, they at least need to choose carefully from their FA list. I hate the idea of keeping Isringhausen in the closer spot, but I have a feeling that he'll get a contract in '09. Springer would be a better use of their money, I think. Mulder probably isn't worth the risk, and Villone, quite frankly, was one of their most consistently poor relievers. Both of them could free up some salary space, but they'll definitely need someone to fill the gaps. Their most gaping holes are in the rotation. If Carpenter's looking at all shaky, they have got to get a decent starter.

St. Louis has more than enough offense to make a run. We'll see if they vie for any hurlers.

The Cubs are still dealing with their impending sale, but aren't worried about that at all. Right now they seem to be bolstering their team some with some interesting trades and acquisitions. Hopefully, with a little luck and some good players, the streak ends at 100. Hopefully.

Actually for once I am not going to complain about the Indians, I think that they did good this offseason for once. I guess it helps that Cleveland has been in a recession since the early 2000's, so this economy didn't surprise us like it did the other teams that are not from New York or Boston. But yeah, I am looking forward to this season, I really like all the moves that the Indians made, I was downright surprised that they were able to sign Kerry Wood, because IMO he was the best closer out there. Then there was that little 3-way trade with New York and Seattle that got us another reliever (Joe Smith) and a high offensive potential 2nd basemen. (Luis Valbuena) Mark DeRosa is a nice player too, and Cleveland didn't give up any major-league talent for him, and yeah, call me crazy but I like taking a flier on Carl Pavano... he had some good years when he was healthy, he kicked butt in the playoffs that one year, and the Indians have a good track record with injury-prone pitchers. He needed a change of scenery... I like him much more than Kris Benson, which made me cringe when I saw that the Indians were initially interested in him... it's bad enough that he has never been much good, and he is probably more valuable to his team when he was on the DL, but then there is the fact that if you sign him, Anna Benson comes with him... we don't need that distraction, I'm glad the Indians stayed away. lol

Seriously, I will LMAO if when the Indians open up New York's new stadium this year it turns out to be Sabathia vs. Pavano and we kick butt. I am interested to see how CC responds to New York... I know in Cleveland he tended to struggle with new challenges, but he usually overcame them eventually. I know that high-pressure situations have not been too good for him, so it will be interesting to see how he reacts in New York's opening series against Cleveland.

Now, it is time for my deep, insightful comment...

I think the Indians have made good moves, but in reality, what is with stocking up on so many Cubs? Does a team who hasn't won the World Series in 61 years really believe that the answer to it's problems is going out and getting players from a team that hasn't won a World Series in 101 years?

j/k I love the Cubbies too, and Cleveland really did do a good job.

It's only been 100 so far (1908-2008), let's not get ahead of ourselves in ridiculing the Cubs. Like I said, hopefully that's where the streak ends, but we'll just have to see how the season goes. I think the Cubs have picked up some decent people, though they let go of a couple of fan favorites in the process. Time will only tell, though.

The contract game continues. Manny Ramirez just turned down a $25 million offer from the Dodgers (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ti-manny020309&prov=yhoo&type=lgns), preferring to window shop a little longer. There are a lot of rumors flying around about where he might go... Albert Pujols himself said he'd be giving Ramirez's number to Cardinals manager Tony La Russa.

While I appreciate the man's baseball skills, I don't think he'd be the best influence on a Cardinals squad that traditionally emphasizes smart, balanced play. Furthermore, considering our potential pitching crisis I don't think he's the best use of our money right now. Anything can happen, but I'd rather not gamble entirely on Carpenter returning. (Besides, even if ol' Carp does return to 2006 form, what are we supposed to do for the other 80% of our games?)

EDIT: On an unrelated note, Bud Selig is the most overpaid man in sports (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=jp-seligsalary020309&prov=yhoo&type=lgns).

At least Spiderman never stole second on his watch. Close, though. At present, he's resisting a salary cap (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=Ap0cepHSrQDhQFpqCUCzLjsHU84F?slug=ap-selig-economy&prov=ap&type=lgns).

A lot of big stuff's going to happen soon with the steroid scandals, too. The evidence against Bonds will be unsealed today (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=Ajw9udCnpWHrXETc7mVXKFapu7YF?slug=ap-bonds-steroids&prov=ap&type=lgns), and Clemens' syringes are currently being tested (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AuUJH5Dlc75AgsNNfs0AJsapu7YF?slug=ap-clemens-grandjury&prov=ap&type=lgns). Not to mention the McGwire book (http://deadspin.com/5136177/mark-mcgwires-one+eyed-baby-brother-reveals-the-not+so+startling-truth), which seems to be of great interest to... well, nobody. (Hey, Big Mac was one of the most honest guys about it, from what I've seen.)

Eager to sign another Kevin Millwod, Rangers sign Jason Jennings to 1 year deal ( http://blogs.denverpost.com/rockies/2009/02/06/jason-jennings-signs-with-rangers/)

Jennings can earn up to 1.5 Mil in incentives, so overall not a bad deal for the Rangers.

Diamondbacks reach into the Lazarus Pit, Sign Tom Gordon (http://blogs.denverpost.com/rockies/2009/02/06/lets-talk-incentives-with-gordon-jennings/)

Tom Gordon can earn up to 2.5 Million in incentives, assuming he can get off his walker and make it to the mound.

Apparently the Dodgers want to have plenitful amounts of starting pitching, (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ti-wolfdodgers020609&prov=yhoo&type=lgns&expire=1) Because signing Randy Wolf to a one year deal brings the total amount of starting pitching on their roster to 9.

The Twins strengthen their relieving corp by adding free agent Luis Ayala to a one year deal, (http://blogs2.startribune.com/blogs/christensen/2009/02/06/agent-twins-reach-agreement-with-ayala/) adding an unclutch reliever to their roster. Ayala is best known as playing for the Nationals and New York Mets last year, best known for being part of the bullpen of the Mets that decided to choke on a huge cow dick in September. Here's to hoping he doesn't bring that mentalitity with him.

And in other news, Manny Ramirez is a money-grubbing whore and Cliff Floyd signed with the Padres.

Sorry that school is keeping me from doing this, expect more updates in the following months.

Great. As much as I wanted to avoid stories like this as much as possible this season... A-Rod reportedly tested positive for steroids (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-rodriguez-steroids&prov=ap&type=lgns).

I was willing to look past his being a... *cringes* ...Yankee in the hope that he'd kick Bonds' ass out of the record books. But now? Our best shot left for a clean Home Run King is Albert Pujols, and it'll be a decade before he's anywhere close to 762. :P

I'm glad I was able to convince Ghost to post this thread early, because this is shaping up to be the single strangest offseason in major league history.

There are already analysts saying that A-Rod will never get into the Hall of Fame (http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=3892544&name=olney_buster&action=upsell&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fesp n%2fblog%2findex%3fentryID%3d3892544%26name%3dolne y_buster), that this, more than any other event, has irreparably damaged all of baseball (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&id=3892788), and that we're all fools for being surprised (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=jp-arodreax020709&prov=yhoo&type=lgns).

Others are standing up for the man, arguing that he's still a great player (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=3891343&name=Neyer_Rob), that we should blame the player's union (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/jon_heyman/02/08/rodriguez.union/index.html?eref=T1), and even that there were no penalties for a positive steroid test in 2003 (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/baseball/mlb/02/07/alex-rodriguez-steroids/index.html?eref=T1).

A-Rod has yet to comment. The next move, whether it's a declaration of innocence, an admission of guilt, or just pure silence, is his move alone. He can't go back now. His future is his choice.

Take a seat and watch the action. And think about what this means for you, as a fan of your favorite players, your beloved teams, and the national pastime itself.

Staying in line with the horrible signings, Andruw Jones has signed a contract with the Texas Rangers, (http://blogs.nypost.com/sports/st/archives/2009/02/rangers_to_sign.html) hoping that he can make the major league squad. It is only a minor league deal worth $500,000 (up to 1 million if he makes the Major League squad) so all in all it's not too bad. Hopefully he can spend all the money he stole from the Dodgers on a hitting instructor, and stay above the Mendoza Line.

I'm surprised no one has commented on Joe Torre's new book The Yankee Years

I kinda find it quite hilarious that people thought of Alex Rodriguez as "A-Fraud" in the clubhouse and that Torre claims that he had a "white-girl obsession" over Derek Jeter. Personally, I don't care much about all the news that A-Rod is in but I believe its all a case of him needing the attention for himself, due to him being insecure of himself as a ball player.

Other than that, I'm not sure what to think of the Mets this off-season. Sure I was thrilled when we got Francisco Rodiriguez for less than he demanded and we got J.J. Putz by dealing away Aaron Heilman (FINALLY HE'S GONE!!), though we lost Joe and Endy in the deal as well (I personally liked them both, ESPECIALLY Endy, hope he does well in Seattle).

I keep up-to-date on my baseball news off of Yahoo! Sports and its quite amazing how the Mets fans react in their comments about some of our signings. Some peoples said that we NEED to sign Ollie and then wanted to tear Minaya to pieces for giving him 3 years, $36 million. Personally, I feel like we broke even either way because that was the same deal we put on the table for Derek Lowe (who thankfully went to the Braves, god I'd have been pissed if we signed him) and I feel that Ollie is going to shine this year.

Anyways, here's to Spring Training which starts in a few weeks :D

At this point, the main surprise to me is that he admitted it. I didn't expect that route. It'll actually be interesting to see how this affects his career in the future... that may have been the best move he could've made, because at least he was honest enough to give the answer we all knew was true anyway.

As I said before, the next person with a legitimate shot is my man, Albert Pujols.

Meh, it's worth making another post for this.

Rodriguez says cousin injected him with drugs (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-yankees-rodriguez&prov=ap&type=lgns)

Although I think he's right to admit he took steroids - and sort of saying he took them knowingly, though leaving a pitifully small glimmer of doubt he may try to use later - it's pretty clear that no one can trust anything he's ever said or done.

Let's face it. If McGwire's going to be held out of the Hall of Fame for one Senate appearance, even though he didn't break any of the game's rules, then A-Rod's in trouble.

Here's his full statement (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-rodriguezstatementtext&prov=ap&type=lgns), if you want the transcript.

Angel's rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart, 22, killed in hit and run accident early this morning. (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9435902/Angels-pitcher-Adenhart,-22,-killed-in-car-crash?MSNHPHMA) Meh, after all of the excitement of getting the baseball season started, a tragic accident happened not even a week into the season... pretty sad stuff. 2 of the other 3 people in the car with Adenhart died while the other is in critical condition, while the guy that caused the accident had already his driver's license taken away for drunk driving, yet he was driving this morning when he caused the accident, and guess what? He was drunk again... and he doesn't even get hurt, he caused the wreck and tried to run away from the scene on foot. Just doesn't seem fair.

In other news, it is still early, but the Indians are really scaring me now, especially that 81.00 ERA that Carl Pavano is carrying around. I wonder if I could go out there and do worse then he did today...

The Cubs are also...somewhat strong out of the gate with a 5-3 record. Their bullpen is a bit iffy, but so far they've been VERY patient at the place and hitting well. Starting pitching has been pretty solid for the most part (hell, Ted Lilly almost had a no-hitter the other day). The season is still early, though, so some of these wrinkles should be ironed out in time.

And this was just a tragic first week of baseball in general. First the Angels' Nick Adenhart, then veteran baseball announcer Harry Kalas died more or less in the booth, then a pitcher from the past (I forget his name right now) died in a farming accident. Hopefully the remainder of the season will progress on a much lighter note...

It's early yet, but my Cards need to pick it up... their fast start didn't last long. I don't like seeing my team sitting in third, injuries aside.

On the other hand, it's a good day when the Jays hold a 2.5-game lead in the AL East, especially since that also relegates New York to third. ^^

Another tragic incident in MLB this year... Wife of Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Scott Schoeneweis dead at 39. (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9595246/Wife-of-D-backs-pitcher-found-dead) Gabrielle Schoeneweis was found dead in her bedroom by her 14 year old daughter... no cause has been determined yet. The couple was married for 10 years, and had three children, the 14 year old girl was Gabrielle's from a previous relationship.

In other news, the Indians are still awful... I never saw this one coming... I never thought that they were going to be the best team out there, but I never expected this... I am starting to think that it is time for them to start trading off some people and start a small rebuilding... the Cleveland minor league system has plenty of good looking hitters, but there aren't many exciting pitchers down there... what a mess, especially the bullpen. I don't know that I have ever seen one this bad, and the weird thing is that it doesn't matter who is pitching, it is like whoever walks out of that bullpen gets his butt kicked... and this was supposed to be one of the strongest aspects of the team this year. It appears that Mark DeRosa is already being made available, with the Mets showing some interest.

Oh, and the White Sox are trying to get Jake Peavy from the Padres, but Peavy has to waive his no-trade clause first... here's to hoping that however this turns out, the White Sox get the short end of the stick... hehehehe at least they are right at the bottom of the Central along with the Indians, and I can at least take a little comfort in the fact that even though Cleveland has only won 2 series the entire season, 1 of them was against the White Sox. lol

Honestly, to see them have the best record early on this season, only to go 39-66 I think (correct me if I'm wrong, please), man, the Blue Jays ought to realize by now that as Canada's only remaining MLB team, they're never going to have any more success around here if they keep letting themselves get walked on.

Trust me, Cleveland may not be from Canada, but they are in really bad shape now... I still don't understand the Cliff Lee trade, they didn't get anything exciting in that deal. I know how frustrating it is though, always being in rebuilding mode.

Anyways, here are the officially eliminated teams:

Rays
Blue Jays
Orioles
White Sox
Indians
Royals
Rangers
Mariners
Athletics
Braves
Marlins
Mets
Nationals
Cubs
Brewers
Reds
Astros
Pirates
Giants
Padres
Diamondbacks

Really, it is starting to look like the only race is going to be the Tigers and Twins in the AL Central, everything else looks pretty decided. I suppose if the Yankees or Dodgers completely lost it they could fall out of first place, but even then they would almost be guaranteed getting in as the wild card.

A: Baltimore, Cleveland, Kansas City, Oakland, NY Mets, Washington, Houston, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, San Diego, and Arizona. That's if we're talking about mathematical eliminations, at least. Oh, and Tampa Bay can only tie for the AL wild card if we see the most ridiculous final two weeks in sports history.

Ohh, it's lonely to be the only real baseball fan on the forums....

Yeah, that's right. I went there. Prove me wrong.[/I][/CENTER]
Hey... you wouldn't be as enthused about baseball either if you had to go through the kind of year that I had to... and what I am in store for next year!! O_o Another race to the basement with the Royals!! Yay!!

So yeah... the one game playoff. Normally I wouldn't have any preference who won that, but I gotta admit, it would be funny to have Carl Pavano vs. the Yankees in the first round.

And yeah, here is something weird... if the Twins get in, 5 out of the 8 playoff teams will have players that started the season in Cleveland, the Angels will be the only team that hasn't made a trade with the Indians either this season or the last.

I'll probably watch the playoffs, it'll be refreshing just to see some good teams playing. I can't say that I really have a favorite though, although I am kinda hoping that the Dodgers get knocked out early. I have never really had an issue with them, but well, the Manny Ramirez/Jim Thome combo that they have doesn't do a whole lot for most Clevelanders. Manny already has his ring, but Thome doesn't... so yeah, it would make me a little happier to see his drought continue.

Major League was on this weekend... excellent movie, very happy ending. Charlie Sheen rocks!!

Hey, think of it this way... in May, you get to see all the October stars -- and you get to do it up close, in an empty stadium! How sweet is that?

Ninth inning between Detroit and Minnesota, and they're knotted 4-4. The Yankees, however, have made their decision on when to play, so here's the updated schedule.

EDIT: Playoff showdown over! Congrats to the Twins for making it into the postseason! Congrats to the Tigers for their stretch collapse.

Hey, think of it this way... in May, you get to see all the October stars -- and you get to do it up close, in an empty stadium! How sweet is that?
Hey, don't be mean... its usually the trades that we make with you guys that get us into trouble...

2006: Ronnie Belliard for Hector Luna.
Luna: .276-2-17 in 37 Games.
Cleveland: 78-84, 4th Place.
St. Louis: 83-78, Wins the World Series.

2007: No Cleveland/St. Louis trades
Cleveland: 96-66, Goes to ALCS, falls one game short of going to the World Series.
St. Louis: 78-84, 3rd Place.

2008: Luis Perdomo for Anthony Reyes (ok this was kind of a wash here)
Reyes: 14 GS, 3-2, 4.33 ERA in 2008/2009, before blowing out elbow in 2009, requiring TJ surgery.
Cleveland: 81-81, 3rd Place.
St. Louis: 86-76, tied for 3rd Place.

2009: Mark DeRosa for Chris Perez & Jess Todd
Chris Perez: 32 G, 0-1, 4.32 ERA, 1-3 in Save Opportunities.
Jess Todd: 19 G, 0-1, 7.40 ERA, .356 BA Against.
Cleveland: 65-97, tied for Last Place.
St. Louis: 91-71, NL Central Champions.

I think I'm seeing a trend here. The Cards finish better than the Indians everytime they trade with them!! So yeah, no more trades, well, unless you guys want your ex-rival Kerry Wood. If you'll take him I'll pay for his plane ticket!! <3

For some strange reason, I am finding myself wanting the Twins to win. I guess I just feel for them, everybody keeps writing them off, saying they will be lucky to win one game. It is just strange for me to like a division rival, especially when the Indians and Twins used to have some ugly confrontations in the early 2000's. Oh well. Really, all of the Indian's rivals are pretty classy though, with the exception of the White Sox, so we are pretty lucky.

Well, seeing as it's still fairly early, I got my picks for who will hopefully advance...the team I predicted to win each series so far is on the left.

NYY over Minnesota
Boston over LAA
Philly over Colarado
St. Louis over LAD

I guess we'll see how many of those predictions happen next round. Maybe Boston and the Yankees will get a matchup in the Yankees' new ballpark. Maybe.

Wow... Cliff Lee vs CC Sabathia tonight. I honestly don't know how I feel about this one... I have a ton of mixed feelings. It really is an awesome matchup, and part of me feels proud to have seen these guys come up with the Indians, and now on the biggest stage... I mean, in 2008, Lee had the best season that I will probably ever get to see in my lifetime, but part of me is really bitter that these guys aren't still in Cleveland... and part of me wonders why we never made it to the series when we had both of these guys for so many years... I don't know, it just makes my head hurt!! It is just getting so frustrating developing players just to get traded to other teams... and I still really don't understand the Cliff Lee trade at all. I guess it is all the more frustrating when it looks like Cleveland is going to have a huge weakness in starting pitching next year. In the Central, if we still had these two guys, I really believe that they could be serious next year.

Philly reminds me a lot of the Indians teams that I grew up with in 1995-2001. A classic underdog team, never wanted to spend any money, never played a meaningful game the entire year, and then they start building up their minor leagues, get some good young players, start spending money and making trades, get a new stadium, and then the fans start coming out, pretty much how the Indians did it. The only problem is that the Indians are now the way that the Phillies used to be back when the Indians were good... Believe it or not, we used to spend money too!!

If Cliff Lee can pull off a complete game shutout in the World Series -- in the hostile Yankee Stadium at that! -- then suddenly, the millionaires in pinstripes will start looking very vulnerable. Just three outs to go... can Philly hang on?

EDIT: No shutout thanks to a foolish throwing error by Rollins, but the Phils take the opener nonetheless.

WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS
NEW YORK YANKEES

...Either that, or everyone else hates the Yankees so much that they didn't want to talk about it. I can't blame you for that, but I have a duty to report the latest on the baseball world. As sickening as that news may be.

Fett One

While I'm not surprised the Phiting Phills lost (they were playing lousy), it would have been nice for them to win 2 years in a row. At least they made the Yankees earn that win by making the series go to 6 games.

mr_pikachu
5th November 2009, 11:48 PM
Ehh, I'm not sure how much you can say anyone "made the other team earn it" after they dropped two of three at home. Granted, Game 6 was the biggest blowout of the bunch, but it was basically over after Game 4.

Meh, usually the Yankees don't annoy me as much as most people, but it just really seems like they threw a temper tantrum after missing the playoffs last year and just started throwing money at a rate that was crazy even for them. So I mean, I'm not exactly mad about it, but not happy about it either, I mean, there aren't any real good stories with the Yankees winning, no feel-good happy sunshine stories. Everybody on that team has either "been there, done that" or else they are super talented mercenaries. Still, it was nice to see CC pitch so wonderfully after practically single-handedly destroying the Indians' chances in 2007!! lol And I guess it was a little annoying too with how everything seemed to go their way, I mean, they got to beat up Carl Pavano to eliminate the Twins, A-Rod finally showed up, and they even beat the Angels, practically the only team out there that routinely gave the Yankees problems.

Personally, I think that everything aside, Cole Hamels was the key for the Phillies, I never really expected Pedro or Blanton to have a ton of success against the Yankees, but the Phillies needed Hamels to come up big, because even with as lousy a year as he had, he was the only starter besides Lee that the Phillies had that could shut down the lineup that the Yankees had... When Hamels fell apart in game 3, and when the Phillies refused to start Lee on short rest, I knew it wasn't looking good at all.

Seriously.....fuck the Yankees. Seriously I'd cheer if that overpriced slab of concrete and steel came crashing down (obviously with no people inside)

I'm seriously getting sick and tired of hearing the phrase "Yankees win the World Series!" That team alone is the biggest example of why baseball needs a salary cap since the mindset is "Screw skills! We'll buy all the best players! :D" In fact it's one of many reasons why I'm not overly big on baseball anymore.

Oh well.....here's hoping the Yanks get crushed in 2010. As for the Mets I can only look forward to either a snowball's chance in hell for a playoff appearence or yet another year of choking in the end :-/

Seriously.....fuck the Yankees. Seriously I'd cheer if that overpriced slab of concrete and steel came crashing down (obviously with no people inside)

I disagree! :D

Actually, the lack of a salary cap is part of what makes baseball interesting, at least for me. Consider the Yankees' ineptitude from 2001-08. It's fun to see comparatively low-budget baseball teams thrive in the face of such rampant overspending thanks to intelligent drafting, crafty management, and the players' will to win (see: Tigers-Cardinals, 2006).

On the other hand, it's irritating when the villains get their lives together and actually win.
