View Full Version : The name game, Gen 5 edition

Remember back when we were all speculating on Gen 4 and we had this thread? Yeah, good times. So, I figured I'd bring it back for Gen 5!
For those who weren't around back then, this is where we try to guess what the English names of the new Pokémon will be.
So, my guesses
Tsutaja (grass starter): Mapleaf
Pokabu (fire starter): Pyrig
Mijumaru (water starter): ... no clue
Zorua: Zorra
Zoroark: Zorroark
Zorua and Zoroark could keep the Japanese romanizations, but I'm guessing that they'll double up the "r"s given how their names are based on zorro, the Spanish word for fox.
Murcielago

Pokabu (fire starter): Pignite (Pig + ignite)
Thats really all I got. :p
Blademaster

Smugleaf.
Pignite.
Wotter.
Zoroa.
Zoroark.
They didn't change Lucario's name. I doubt they'll change his Super Saiyan 3 brother's name, either.

Lawnoa (lawn boa constrictor)
Hamelt (ham and melting)
Otterain (otter plus rain)
Zuroa
Zarorok
I'm guessing they'll change the lettering around for the dark foxes in order to avoid lawsuits.

Allright, some more names.
The Zebra: Zebolt
Mumma: Slumbream
Gear: Geer, or possibly Cogear (cog + gear)
... and as a bonus, I'm guessing the professor will be named Professor Maple. I just like the name Maple for a female professor way more than the name Professor Yew.

For the pink thing: SLUMBANK (slumber + piggy bank).
For the zebra: ZAPRA (zap + zebra).
For the crocodilian: CROCULAR (crocodile + binoculars).
For the gears: GOLAR (gear + polar).
For the Fire type: BABOOMA (baboon + daruma + boom).
For the bird: COOWAB (coo + squab).
For the Normal type: CHILLAMI (Romanized version of its Japanese name - they didn't change Pachirisu, so this thing might not be altered, either).
As for Reshiram and Zekrom, they both look slightly mechanical (Zekrom especially), so I'm thinking the ends of their names (RAM and ROM) might come into play. Add to that their color prefixes ("shiro" and "kuro"), and the English names will likely be just Romanized versions of them, like Leshiram and Zecrom/Zecurom.

Has no one thought of "Emboar" for the starting Fire-type?

They have.

Maybe for an evolution, but that little bacon bit just doesn't scream "BOAR" to me.

OK, a little bit of name news: A leaked English movie poster for the Zoroark movie reveals that the movie's title will be Zoroark: Master of Illusions, more importantly it confirms that Zoroark will be known as Zoroark in English. No real surprise there.
More predictions:
Wargle: Eaglesam (Eagle + Uncle Sam, I always thought that would be a cool name for a bald eagle pokemon)
Kyuremu: Kyurem (Fits better with Reshiram and Zekrom)
Genosect: Genesect (Gene + insect)
Blademaster

I think Genosect's name will stay the same as it is. I always read it as 'genocide insect,' not 'gene insect.'

At least the starters official names have been released
Tsutaja = Snivy (Snake + Ivy)
Pokabu = Tepig (Tepid + Pig)
Mijumaru = Oshawott (Ocean + Water + Otter)
Also;
Isshu Region = Unova Region ("UN"ited states "OV" "A"merica, or from Unum Nova, meaning One New in Latin)

Last time in Gen 4 when we all were speculating names, I too was a part of it. Now, it is Gen 5 and now the chance has come again. But, I am so sad that I do not have any new suggestions to make, that has not been mentioned in this forum.

Wait, "Pignite" and "Emboar" are both fan names (heck, they were both mentioned in this very thread). Sounds like we have a reason to believe this list is fake. Everything else seems real though. Hmm.

Despite some of them hurting (like Klink's family) I'm willing to consider these official until disproven. I actually don't mind Unfezant at all. The "unfez" part might be based on the word "unfazed", continuing from the "tranquil" reference in the middle-stage...and pigeon > quail > pheasant is hardly the worst biological non-sequiter Pokémon has given us.
Bouffalant amuses me greatly. Buffalo + Bouffant.
I winced a bit at Deino, but Hydreigon made up for it.
And then there's Haxorus. It's just far too fun to say. "L00k 0u+ d00d! I7'5 a \/\/ilD H4XX0Rus!@!!"

Not too bad. Needs less K's, though.
But K is one of the most beautiful letters in Finnish language!
"Kokko, kokoa kokoon koko kokko!"
"Kokko, gather together the whole bonfire!"
"Koko kokkoko?"
"The whole bonfire?"
"Koko kokko."
"The whole bonfire."
Ooops a Finnish attack.
On topic, goodbye Gothimiru. I loved that name.

And in other name news, someone hacked Cartoon Network's site to dig up two gym leader names, specifically the two new main characters from the anime. Iris, the female Dragon gym leader, will also be known as Iris in English, and Dento (the grass-monkey-training leader of the first gym) will be called Cilan.

The name is Cilan. Honestly the first thing it makes me think of is a Gym leader that looks like this:

I'm almost completely sure it's supposed to be like cilantro, considering we also have (water)Cress and Chili as the (supposed) names for the other leaders of the first gym.
