View Full Version : Earthquake Hits Japan

Oh no, not another earthquake! Accompanied with tsunami, fire and mudslides! It's like the Tenshi in Neon Genesis Evanglion! I know we have had many earthquakes lately and also topics about them, but I wanted to post this since it's about the home country of anong others Pokemon, Game Freak, Zelda, Super Mario, Nintendo, DragonballZ, Sailor Moon, Naruto, Bleach and Square Enix.

Of course I should be even more worried, if I've understood correctly, our friend mistysakura is right now in Japan. In Finnish news, they always tell us whether or not there are Finns where something terrible happens, while what I'd like to add there is 'were there any TPMers there'?

Nintendo's headquarters seem safe so far, they are located in Kyoto but what about the others. Namco Bandai is near Tokyo, Sony is in Tokyo, Will The Game Masters soon join Gumpei Yokoi?

UPDATE: I checked a post in Writers Lounge, and from what I read, it seems mistysakura has returned to Australia in February. Also,

Heard about this, so far everyone I know there is alive and well.

RedStarWarrior

The initial aftershock for the earthquake was above 7 on the Richter scale. That's a pretty damn bad quake to begin with...they've also had half a dozen over 6, many more over 5, etc. Some scientists have speculated that the aftershocks could continue for months (and one crazy nutjob said over a year).

The destruction is mind-blowing. Holy shit.

Where exactly did the earthquake and tsunami hit?

LAZY GOOGLING. (http://www.jma.go.jp/en/quake/) Anyways, that's where you can see where quakes take place and when.

The epicenter was in Sendai, located in the north of Honshu. But quakes also occured in Tokyo and other areas. Earthquakes are commonplace in Japan, but this was bigger than the one in 1925, actually, the 5th large in the written history.

Thanks Blade, I was worried about Kojima myself.

Magmar, don't panic, but they say Naoko Takeuchi is missing. And the latest update on Takahashi is that 'someone is seeking information'. I also looked for Tsugumi Ohba and other names, don't even remember them all.

I feel bad for Japan. (As I said on Serebiiforums and Piforums.) Doesn't Nobuo Uematsu live in Tokyo? If he does...he's okay.

Those sites are probably in chaos even without Mikachu Yukitatsu. I've been on a bad habit of making bad jokes about the situation, I'm very sorry about this all, but to be even more honest, I feel better this way.

I talked with my mother about Japan on my phone while shopping today and I fear I shed terror because I was too loud. What do you think of it? Should I have shut up because there were lots of Finnish children there, Pokemon fans possibly. I'd rather not say this, but one possibility seems to be I may be heading to mental hospital. I hope not, but I must discuss with my mental support.

On Twitter, there's a rumour that Satoshi Tajiri is dead but at the same time:
http://bulbanews.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Sendai_earthquake,_tsunami_impact_Pok%C3%A9mon_off icials

Nintendo of America: "Thanks for your concern! During the earthquake no one at Nintendo in Japan was injured and there was no apparent structural damage."

So Blade, please don't draw your wakizashi!

I find it kind of strange that after all the "HAITI uses EARTHQUAKE!" jokes a few months back, the same hasn't happened with Japan considering Japan is where the source of the joke comes from.

I wonder what move they'll use to describe the power plant failure/potential meltdown...?

Poison Gas? Lava Plume? Eruption?

We really should have a nuclear Pokemon. Maybe a Fire/Poison hybrid would work...

When the hell did we start cracking earthquake jokes so soon?

Mikachu Yukitatsu
14th March 2011, 01:22 PM
I heard from the news that another bigger earthquake may take place 'before Wednesday'. Plus, if I understood correctly, many countries are sending help to Japan, but Finland's offer was denied!

Get out of Japan, people! Personally, I wouldn't mind a few more Japanese people where I live. Even if they've been exposed to radiation.

Blademaster
14th March 2011, 02:31 PM
So over the past few days, Japan has been fucked up by an earthquake, a tsunami, a nuclear meltdown, and just yesterday, a volcano.

We're expecting Godzilla to arrive later today to finish the job, since God has evidently decreed this to be Shit on Japan Week.

All joking aside however it's pretty bad over there. My main concern has been the situation at the power plant. Despite the fact that this plant has safety features that Chernobyl lacked due to the USSR cutting corners it's almost as if the Fukushima plant is determined to become a worse accident than Chernobyl :-/

Speaking of which it's almost been 25 years since Chernobyl (4/26/86). The city of Prypiat is an absolute ghost town:

http://pripyat.com//sm/site/photogallery/uploads/320/2540_3.jpg

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b6/Pripyat_panorama_2009-001.jpg/800px-Pripyat_panorama_2009-001.jpg

I hope the situation over there doesn't get any worse......we don't need another city sharing the same fate as Prypiat.

classy_cat18
14th March 2011, 11:37 PM
The worst thing being that it'll be a city much more well-known and significant than Prypiat.

I have a friend living over in Japan although it's in the Osaka area. If things get any worse, I will hop on a plane and drag her back to America myself (if her parents don't beat me to it).

All 3 reactors had some kind of explosion by now and they were saying it was leaking slight radiation which was detected out at sea by the aircraft carriers the US sent.

Dark-San
17th March 2011, 09:14 AM
@classy_cat18~ I have friends living over at Japan too. But that does not mean I have to fly over and drag them out from that hellhole too. You will have to consider on the air flight prices and the logistics. =x But yeah lucky for them, they are residing in Tokyo and not in as Sendai as we feared initially.

A nuclear leakage is expected but I don't believe that it will be the same as Chernobyl. At the moment, I can't really do anything for the Japanese except to pray for their safety and also perhaps some sort of donation, which I did a little while back.

RedStarWarrior
17th March 2011, 08:10 PM
Japan's nuclear reactors were built correctly. The USSR did not construct Chernobyl properly, which contributed to the catastrophe there.

We will not have another Chernobyl.

Telume
17th March 2011, 09:13 PM
The catastrophe in Japan could have been worse but, Japan was well-prepared for it. We are talking about the nation that has some of the most advanced tech in the world.

Blademaster
18th March 2011, 02:11 PM
Advanced, but not always reliable. Earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis? Somebody was fucking slacking off at the Cave of Origin, I think.

The Japanese government admitted that they did not properly prepare for such a situation...very rare for them to admit something like that.

No, it is part of normal procedure to have several plans for such a situation. I live 9 miles from a nuclear plant which I know has at least three different plans for handling containment failure.

The Japanese government was disorganized in regards to disaster recovery and evacuation procedures. A country that exists along the Pacific volcanic ring is well aware of the impending dangers that earthquakes pose. Much like New York City during 9/11, there was a lack of communication and confusion.
