A RPG by Pichu Luver and Crystal Tears
Year 2518
The people who inhabit the ‘Verse are a huge and varied group. No one, if they did even a mite’s worth of travel, would see fit to argue that point. The Alliance may think they can call all them billions its own, but the people of the Rim know better. Out there the Alliance finds itself stretched thin and a more… interesting variety of folk can find themselves a home. Not that the Core doesn’t have its delights, but its populace seems a might too preoccupied with its own neon bright democracy to care about much besides themselves. The Border worlds are less engrossed, but they still have pretentions of finery. Thus it would take a miracle to gain the attention of this whole group for any scrap of time.
‘The Vid’ wasn’t that miracle. It was all kinds of horrifying. The people of the ‘Verse had seen horror before though. Nobody would call the last weeks of the Unification War a minor backyard scuffle. So when ‘The Vid’ hit the Cortex it was almost a surprise how far it reached, and how much it affected folk. Then again… with its gruesome final moments, perhaps it hasn’t been so easy to dismiss. It revealed that the Alliance wasn’t some shining beacon of honour and honesty. They had their dark secrets and ideals they seemed willin’ to foist on everyone. No matter the cost.
Those from the edge, or frequently travelled there, knew about Reavers. Mad people bent only on killing, raping and eatin’ on a man’s flesh. It was hard to believe that the Alliance had made those men the way they were, but that kind of mutilation is hard to fake. Few remembered Miranda but that didn’t matter none. The only thing that did was that the Alliance had lied to the whole God-damn ‘Verse, and they had managed to keep their planet wide fuck up quiet. That took power, a scary kind of power.
The mood on the Rim worlds, home too many an old Independent, was grim. Not truly shocked but wondering what the result of this reveal would be. They feared more law, but in some a new hope for freedom stirred. No one was talkin’ war yet; those who had fought were still young enough to be listened to by those newly young and dumb. Change however, that was in the gossip. But whether Parliament is willin’ to bend to the wants of a stirred populace is the true question.
Perhaps they hope the crowd will quiet down and everything will go back to the way it was. Tickity-boo.
Perhaps it won’t though.

This RPG is based both on the TV show and movie, Firefly and Serenity respectively. The premise is quite simple; you can sign up as crew member or passenger on the ship, Serendipity. This RPG starts a day after the video on Miranda was released over the Cortex by Malcolm Reynolds (this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-NVs68X_S4) video in case you haven’t seen it).
Your characters in this RPG are free to board and depart as you wish (obviously only when we land world side, or dock with another ship/space platform). This includes crew, though we might need to fill the gap pretty quick. We could have someone else’s character step up and take the spot IF the former RPer holding the position is ok with it.
The ship is leaving the planet Beaumonde of the Kalidasa system, and heading for the moon Colchester of the White Sun system. We are likely to run into an Alliance cruiser once we near Colchester and may be required to dock with them. This (http://www.serenitymush.com/wiki/index.php/The_%27verse) is a link to known planets and moons, some with brief descriptions.
Serendipity
The ship your character(s) is boarding or serving on is a Manta-class Multipurpose Transport vessel. It is shaped vaguely like a manta ray. It has room for four shuttles, two large that come with the ship, and room for two small (like those Serenity had) shuttles that can be attached to the underside of the outer wings. The two large shuttles are shaped like remoras. The 4 ‘fins’ retract just before landing or boarding with a ship. The top of the shuttles are capable of attaching themselves to almost any hull.
Serendipity is about 35 feet tall, 85 feet long, and from wing tip to tapering wing tip, 240 feet. It loads from the front and on either side of the door—just under the bridge—it has two large guns that can fold inwards to ease parking. On the underside of the vessel where the ‘gills’ would be are two flat engine blocks. The main engine is at the back and it leaves a trail of light reminiscent of a manta rays tail.
On the interior it is primarily a two leveled ship. The lower area and wings are reserved for cargo. The two small shuttles would open directly onto this area, attaching near either wingtip. The upper area has the bridge, 8 crew/luxury rooms (8 wide by 10 long), 2 bathrooms, living/dining area, and engine compartment directly in a line from stem to stern. Long windows run down the length of the living/dining room on the roof. The two large shuttles attach to the top of the wings and open to a narrow hallway, between two rooms in the quarter’s area. On either side of the living/dining room are the med bay and armory. From these a pair of stairs drops down to the cargo area at the back.
There is a spiral staircase leading from the back of the living/dining room to the lower level. Underneath the engine and encasing the spiral staircase are a series of rooms (called bunks) no more than 4 feet tall, 6 feet long and 4 feet wide. They just consist of a bed and small sliding closet. The area leading to the cargo has no bunks but 2 toilets and 2 showers; one on either side of a narrow hallway.
This is an extremely slow ship. This is made up for the fact it is extremely fuel efficient and it can turn over on its own tail in any direction. The guns were not originally part of the ship but added upon gaining the Weapons Specialist as a crew member. They are powerful, but slow to fire. The hull is a dark blue-grey, the shuttles are silver, and the name of the ship is on the right leading edge of the wing. The letters Serendipity are painted in black on a light blue and white background.

Name: Kale Guri ‘Calgary’
Age: 25
Gender: M
Status: Crew. Captain/Engineer.
Description: His Earth-that-Was ancestors were from the Indian sub-continent and he is fond of blaming them for his lack of vertical stature. He is only 5’3 but has a decent set of muscles on him thanks to lugging about various mechanical parts for his ship. He has light brown skin and short, very curly dark brown hair. If he was a girl they’d call it Shirley Temple like. In fact they do anyway; he just pretends he doesn’t understand their meaning. His eyes are amber coloured and he thinks it draws the ladies in… until they hear him talk. Thanks to growing up in a mostly of-Indian-descent settlement, he retains the accent. Generally he comes across as cute instead of handsome.
His clothing varies but it usually has multiple stains somewhere on it. He’s fond of green, brown and tan when working on the engines, but at any other time you’d be hard pressed to find a more colourful personage. He loves bright primary colours. Normally the cloth itself is a tunic with thigh length vest and trousers. Often he has a wide cloth belt tying back the vest from draping forward. He is usually wearing a tool belt with various gizmos on it, along with a small pistol. He wears leather moccassins on most occasions.
Personality: In a word, goofy. Nearly always has a smile on his face and is a ‘glass pouring over’ kind of guy. He’s not the hyper kind of happy, just cheerful and doesn’t mind making fun of himself. He’s naïve but a quick learner of the truths of the ‘Verse. Likes to believe the best in people and often gives them more chances then they deserve. Never stays angry or sad for long, but when he’s feeling either he usually tries to be alone to get past it. Enjoys flirting, but is rarely serious about it. He just likes to bug the ladies. Overall he’s not a very ‘inspiring’ Captain. Most people listen to him simply because they can’t stay mad at him, he’ll always have your back, and his decisions business-wise have been profitable.
History: He was born on the moon Shiva into an extensive Indian family. He is the middle child of three, his two siblings being female and taller than him; to his endless chagrin. He had an uneventful, happy childhood but wasn’t exactly the most studious student. The only thing he loved and was good at was mechanics and computers. He only just past his exams to get into a technical college, but found collage easy as it was about something he cared about. Just before he graduated his parents died in a mining accident and left him and his two sisters a small fortune. He chose to buy Serendipity with his inheritance upon graduating and has been travelling ever since.
Skills: A great tinker-er, has made many improvements to Serendipity in the time he’s owned her. Some limited skills at hacking, but mostly he’s mechanically minded. Plays the trombone and was schooled in the Bhangra style of Indian dance until he left on Serendipity.
Relationships: Two sisters, and a huge extended family. He has a brother-sister relationship with Riley. He would consider everyone on his crew his friends more or less. He has known Lou from the beginning when he first started running cargo/passengers, and despite the age difference, they get on great. Open to more.
Other: Lou gave him the nickname Calgary upon their first meeting. It’s stuck, with few using his given name anymore. Has a Siamese cat named Edmonton.
Name: Lou McAllister
Age: 62
Gender: M
Status: Passenger, boarding upon arrival at Colchester.
Description: He’s a tall Caucasian man, 6’4 and possessed of a wiry strength. He looks kinda like a bean pole but he’s perfectly capable of knocking out kids half his age. When not in extended space travel he sports a deep tan and you can tell he’s spent most of his life outdoors. He has deep smile lines on either side of his face, some crow’s feet at his eyes, and a couple lines across his forehead. His hair is silver with streaks of white, a couple inches long and it has only recently started to thin out. He has a couple age spots on his hands and sports a white, handlebar moustache. His eyebrows are silver and notable in that they are quite bushy (though not a uni-brow). He has a very deep voice as well. His eyes are bright blue and he wears half-moon spectacles when he reads.
He typically wears blue jeans, various brown, black or red shirts and leather boots. Sometimes wears loose light coloured muscle shirts with a plaid, button-up over shirt of various colours. He wears chaps when working with his horses and world-side dons a black cowboy hat. Possesses a grey-brown slicker and wears a large pistol on his left hip.
Personality: A calm, reasonable individual who enjoys a good discussion on any topic. He’s very intelligent, well-read and a quick judge of character. One to appreciate the effort a person makes, and doesn’t worry too much about the actual outcome of the endeavour. He has a great dislike for intentional stupidity and doesn’t have a problem deflating people’s pretentions. Good-humoured though he rarely laughs, he’s more like to give a deep throated chuckle. He doesn’t hold a grudge but he never forgets anything either. Generally speaking he’s a good, old-time cowboy.
History: He was born on Summerfair to a wealthy ranch owning couple. His parents were never married but raised 7 kids together. He was good at training horses and often worked with young animals, newly broken in. He was a very smart kid, and his parents worked up the cash to send him to Londinium when he was old enough, for some of the best education money could buy. He enjoyed his time there but never had plans for a particular career. While there he earned a reputation training the truly wealthy student’s horses. When he graduated he moved to Colchester and started his own ranch, specializing in horse breeding/training.
When he was 21 he met his wife, Julianne and they married 5 years later. They had their first child a year after marriage and their second two years later. They were raised to the horse training life but like Lou, they were sent to the best schools to give them all the options. When the War for Unification broke out, Lou was for the Independents but he kept quiet about it due to where he lived. His sons differed with his opinion, but Lou figured that was because they hadn’t lived near the edge like he had. His wife died suddenly near the end of the war and since her passing Lou has been training strings of horses and selling them to the Border and Rim worlds. His ranch has been left in the hands of a trusted friend.
Skills: Horse trainer, blacksmith and some emergency vet care. Decent gun hand (much better with a rifle sniping folk then in a down and dirty gunfight), plays a fiddle.
Relationships: Widowed father of 2 sons. They were on opposite sides of the Unification War, though he personally held no grudge against them for their difference of opinion. Good friends with Kale as he says ‘he makes me feel 30 years younger with his antics.’ Sees Riley as the daughter he never had. James is his younger son, though he doesn't yet know he's aboard. Open to more.
Other: Coming with 8 high bred horses he going to sell on the Border and Rim worlds. Except for his personal horse, a 7year old, dun coloured Tennessee Walker mare named Ludicrous Lizard (barn name ‘Liz’).
