-Manta-
A RPG by Pichu Luver and Crystal Tears

Year 2518

The people who inhabit the ‘Verse are a huge and varied group. No one, if they did even a mite’s worth of travel, would see fit to argue that point. The Alliance may think they can call all them billions its own, but the people of the Rim know better. Out there the Alliance finds itself stretched thin and a more… interesting variety of folk can find themselves a home. Not that the Core doesn’t have its delights, but its populace seems a might too preoccupied with its own neon bright democracy to care about much besides themselves. The Border worlds are less engrossed, but they still have pretentions of finery. Thus it would take a miracle to gain the attention of this whole group for any scrap of time.

‘The Vid’ wasn’t that miracle. It was all kinds of horrifying. The people of the ‘Verse had seen horror before though. Nobody would call the last weeks of the Unification War a minor backyard scuffle. So when ‘The Vid’ hit the Cortex it was almost a surprise how far it reached, and how much it affected folk. Then again… with its gruesome final moments, perhaps it hasn’t been so easy to dismiss. It revealed that the Alliance wasn’t some shining beacon of honour and honesty. They had their dark secrets and ideals they seemed willin’ to foist on everyone. No matter the cost.

Those from the edge, or frequently travelled there, knew about Reavers. Mad people bent only on killing, raping and eatin’ on a man’s flesh. It was hard to believe that the Alliance had made those men the way they were, but that kind of mutilation is hard to fake. Few remembered Miranda but that didn’t matter none. The only thing that did was that the Alliance had lied to the whole God-damn ‘Verse, and they had managed to keep their planet wide fuck up quiet. That took power, a scary kind of power.

The mood on the Rim worlds, home too many an old Independent, was grim. Not truly shocked but wondering what the result of this reveal would be. They feared more law, but in some a new hope for freedom stirred. No one was talkin’ war yet; those who had fought were still young enough to be listened to by those newly young and dumb. Change however, that was in the gossip. But whether Parliament is willin’ to bend to the wants of a stirred populace is the true question.

Perhaps they hope the crowd will quiet down and everything will go back to the way it was. Tickity-boo.

Perhaps it won’t though.

This RPG is based both on the TV show and movie, Firefly and Serenity respectively. The premise is quite simple; you can sign up as crew member or passenger on the ship, Serendipity. This RPG starts a day after the video on Miranda was released over the Cortex by Malcolm Reynolds (this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-NVs68X_S4) video in case you haven’t seen it).

Your characters in this RPG are free to board and depart as you wish (obviously only when we land world side, or dock with another ship/space platform). This includes crew, though we might need to fill the gap pretty quick. We could have someone else’s character step up and take the spot IF the former RPer holding the position is ok with it.

The ship is leaving the planet Beaumonde of the Kalidasa system, and heading for the moon Colchester of the White Sun system. We are likely to run into an Alliance cruiser once we near Colchester and may be required to dock with them. This (http://www.serenitymush.com/wiki/index.php/The_%27verse) is a link to known planets and moons, some with brief descriptions.

Serendipity
The ship your character(s) is boarding or serving on is a Manta-class Multipurpose Transport vessel. It is shaped vaguely like a manta ray. It has room for four shuttles, two large that come with the ship, and room for two small (like those Serenity had) shuttles that can be attached to the underside of the outer wings. The two large shuttles are shaped like remoras. The 4 ‘fins’ retract just before landing or boarding with a ship. The top of the shuttles are capable of attaching themselves to almost any hull.

Serendipity is about 35 feet tall, 85 feet long, and from wing tip to tapering wing tip, 240 feet. It loads from the front and on either side of the door—just under the bridge—it has two large guns that can fold inwards to ease parking. On the underside of the vessel where the ‘gills’ would be are two flat engine blocks. The main engine is at the back and it leaves a trail of light reminiscent of a manta rays tail.

On the interior it is primarily a two leveled ship. The lower area and wings are reserved for cargo. The two small shuttles would open directly onto this area, attaching near either wingtip. The upper area has the bridge, 8 crew/luxury rooms (8 wide by 10 long), 2 bathrooms, living/dining area, and engine compartment directly in a line from stem to stern. Long windows run down the length of the living/dining room on the roof. The two large shuttles attach to the top of the wings and open to a narrow hallway, between two rooms in the quarter’s area. On either side of the living/dining room are the med bay and armory. From these a pair of stairs drops down to the cargo area at the back.

There is a spiral staircase leading from the back of the living/dining room to the lower level. Underneath the engine and encasing the spiral staircase are a series of rooms (called bunks) no more than 4 feet tall, 6 feet long and 4 feet wide. They just consist of a bed and small sliding closet. The area leading to the cargo has no bunks but 2 toilets and 2 showers; one on either side of a narrow hallway.

This is an extremely slow ship. This is made up for the fact it is extremely fuel efficient and it can turn over on its own tail in any direction. The guns were not originally part of the ship but added upon gaining the Weapons Specialist as a crew member. They are powerful, but slow to fire. The hull is a dark blue-grey, the shuttles are silver, and the name of the ship is on the right leading edge of the wing. The letters Serendipity are painted in black on a light blue and white background.

~~~~~~~
Name: Kale Guri ‘Calgary’
Age: 25
Gender: M
Status: Crew. Captain/Engineer.
Description: His Earth-that-Was ancestors were from the Indian sub-continent and he is fond of blaming them for his lack of vertical stature. He is only 5’3 but has a decent set of muscles on him thanks to lugging about various mechanical parts for his ship. He has light brown skin and short, very curly dark brown hair. If he was a girl they’d call it Shirley Temple like. In fact they do anyway; he just pretends he doesn’t understand their meaning. His eyes are amber coloured and he thinks it draws the ladies in… until they hear him talk. Thanks to growing up in a mostly of-Indian-descent settlement, he retains the accent. Generally he comes across as cute instead of handsome.
His clothing varies but it usually has multiple stains somewhere on it. He’s fond of green, brown and tan when working on the engines, but at any other time you’d be hard pressed to find a more colourful personage. He loves bright primary colours. Normally the cloth itself is a tunic with thigh length vest and trousers. Often he has a wide cloth belt tying back the vest from draping forward. He is usually wearing a tool belt with various gizmos on it, along with a small pistol. He wears leather moccassins on most occasions.
Personality: In a word, goofy. Nearly always has a smile on his face and is a ‘glass pouring over’ kind of guy. He’s not the hyper kind of happy, just cheerful and doesn’t mind making fun of himself. He’s naïve but a quick learner of the truths of the ‘Verse. Likes to believe the best in people and often gives them more chances then they deserve. Never stays angry or sad for long, but when he’s feeling either he usually tries to be alone to get past it. Enjoys flirting, but is rarely serious about it. He just likes to bug the ladies. Overall he’s not a very ‘inspiring’ Captain. Most people listen to him simply because they can’t stay mad at him, he’ll always have your back, and his decisions business-wise have been profitable.
History: He was born on the moon Shiva into an extensive Indian family. He is the middle child of three, his two siblings being female and taller than him; to his endless chagrin. He had an uneventful, happy childhood but wasn’t exactly the most studious student. The only thing he loved and was good at was mechanics and computers. He only just past his exams to get into a technical college, but found collage easy as it was about something he cared about. Just before he graduated his parents died in a mining accident and left him and his two sisters a small fortune. He chose to buy Serendipity with his inheritance upon graduating and has been travelling ever since.
Skills: A great tinker-er, has made many improvements to Serendipity in the time he’s owned her. Some limited skills at hacking, but mostly he’s mechanically minded. Plays the trombone and was schooled in the Bhangra style of Indian dance until he left on Serendipity.
Relationships: Two sisters, and a huge extended family. He has a brother-sister relationship with Riley. He would consider everyone on his crew his friends more or less. He has known Lou from the beginning when he first started running cargo/passengers, and despite the age difference, they get on great. Open to more.
Other: Lou gave him the nickname Calgary upon their first meeting. It’s stuck, with few using his given name anymore. Has a Siamese cat named Edmonton.
Name: Lou McAllister
Age: 62
Gender: M
Status: Passenger, boarding upon arrival at Colchester.
Description: He’s a tall Caucasian man, 6’4 and possessed of a wiry strength. He looks kinda like a bean pole but he’s perfectly capable of knocking out kids half his age. When not in extended space travel he sports a deep tan and you can tell he’s spent most of his life outdoors. He has deep smile lines on either side of his face, some crow’s feet at his eyes, and a couple lines across his forehead. His hair is silver with streaks of white, a couple inches long and it has only recently started to thin out. He has a couple age spots on his hands and sports a white, handlebar moustache. His eyebrows are silver and notable in that they are quite bushy (though not a uni-brow). He has a very deep voice as well. His eyes are bright blue and he wears half-moon spectacles when he reads.
He typically wears blue jeans, various brown, black or red shirts and leather boots. Sometimes wears loose light coloured muscle shirts with a plaid, button-up over shirt of various colours. He wears chaps when working with his horses and world-side dons a black cowboy hat. Possesses a grey-brown slicker and wears a large pistol on his left hip.
Personality: A calm, reasonable individual who enjoys a good discussion on any topic. He’s very intelligent, well-read and a quick judge of character. One to appreciate the effort a person makes, and doesn’t worry too much about the actual outcome of the endeavour. He has a great dislike for intentional stupidity and doesn’t have a problem deflating people’s pretentions. Good-humoured though he rarely laughs, he’s more like to give a deep throated chuckle. He doesn’t hold a grudge but he never forgets anything either. Generally speaking he’s a good, old-time cowboy.
History: He was born on Summerfair to a wealthy ranch owning couple. His parents were never married but raised 7 kids together. He was good at training horses and often worked with young animals, newly broken in. He was a very smart kid, and his parents worked up the cash to send him to Londinium when he was old enough, for some of the best education money could buy. He enjoyed his time there but never had plans for a particular career. While there he earned a reputation training the truly wealthy student’s horses. When he graduated he moved to Colchester and started his own ranch, specializing in horse breeding/training.
When he was 21 he met his wife, Julianne and they married 5 years later. They had their first child a year after marriage and their second two years later. They were raised to the horse training life but like Lou, they were sent to the best schools to give them all the options. When the War for Unification broke out, Lou was for the Independents but he kept quiet about it due to where he lived. His sons differed with his opinion, but Lou figured that was because they hadn’t lived near the edge like he had. His wife died suddenly near the end of the war and since her passing Lou has been training strings of horses and selling them to the Border and Rim worlds. His ranch has been left in the hands of a trusted friend.
Skills: Horse trainer, blacksmith and some emergency vet care. Decent gun hand (much better with a rifle sniping folk then in a down and dirty gunfight), plays a fiddle.
Relationships: Widowed father of 2 sons. They were on opposite sides of the Unification War, though he personally held no grudge against them for their difference of opinion. Good friends with Kale as he says ‘he makes me feel 30 years younger with his antics.’ Sees Riley as the daughter he never had. James is his younger son, though he doesn't yet know he's aboard. Open to more.
Other: Coming with 8 high bred horses he going to sell on the Border and Rim worlds. Except for his personal horse, a 7year old, dun coloured Tennessee Walker mare named Ludicrous Lizard (barn name ‘Liz’).
Must try and resist, grasp of Firefly campaign. Gah its no use. Since me and my friends are playing a D10 style Firefly campaign I think its only fitting that I should use that character.
Name: Kiia
Age: 20
Gender: Female
Status: Crew – Pilot
Description: Kiia is 5’6 but she tends to look smaller because she’s so scrawny. There’s a little muscle in her upper arms but not a lot. She has green eyes and brown hair that she keeps cut in line with the bottom of her earlobe. She likes her clothes loose which is ideal because her physique makes it hard to find clothes that fit properly. Commonly found in baggy khakis and a wife beater that is always black or grey, she’s sometimes assumed to be the ship’s mechanic.
Personality: Kiia’s takes a casual and laid back approach to life which makes it easy for her to get on with the crew. Though she doesn’t consider them her family and possibly not even completely friends, she is very fond of them. Kale is the only one who knows the depth of her history and everyone else knows enough to be content, and Kiia has no interest in sharing any more than she already has. To this extent, she still hasn’t managed to open up to any of them emotionally and is still fairly withdrawn. She has a fondness for female companions and will generally spend the greater part of her shore leave in the company of one. As she says: “Relations are complication, sex is easy, and women don’t judge you if you’re paying.” Beaumonde is the exception to her rule. She has no love for the planet and refuses to leave the ship whenever they’re docked there. Despite having her own quarters she spends most of the time in the hull and has a bunk ready to be set up. She also has a terrible habit of eating in their instead of the dining area and the crew is trying to get her out of it. Flying requires her to focus and as such she instated a “no one enters the hull when I’m flying” rule. A rule completely ignored by the crew, much to her irritation. She is also known to be impulsive and a quick-thinker.
History: Kiia was abandoned at the spaceport on Beaumonde, for reasons she doesn’t know, and likes to pretend she never wants to. She moved through various foster homes and orphanages until she was 9 and decided she’d had enough of that life and ran away. She tried to escape the planet by sneaking onto whatever transport looked the easiest but was always caught and handed over the authorities. Stuck on the planet, she did her best to survive but the high security of many of the buildings made it almost impossible to survive in the streets and she ended up with the other runaways in one of the planet’s many scrap yards. One day, she came across the hull of a prototype for a small commercial transport. She made it her home and over time grew curious about the various buttons and switches in her house. She made regular trips to the spaceport to try and learn by watching other pilots but their ships were too different and she always came away at the day’s end feeling disappointed and more confused than when it had begun.
A year later, she heard about Life Line, a company offering to train pilots for a cost. With no money of her own, Kiia began stealing. With all the commercial traffic it was fairly easy to pinch the odd wallet. But her earnings were slim and when she was approached with the opportunity of joining a gang and receiving better pay-outs, she took it. They called themselves the Beaumonde Bruisers because the founding members made their money through street brawls. Those members were gone and the gang was now involved in less violent ways of getting money but kept the name because “reputations are worth more than gold”. They taught Kiia how to hotwire personal transports and she quickly learned how to handle them. She gained a reputation of her own for escaping chase scenarios by using unconventional means. This developed into racing.
When she was 13 she was challenged by some middle class snob who bet his admission to flight school that he could beat her. Kiia accepted and won but was arrested at the spaceport. With her long list of convictions, she was given a 5 year sentence and imprisoned in juvie.
Another year passed and Kiia met Docla, a scout from a flight school in Salisbury. He went to the prison looking for recruits as part of some “better direction” programme. Almost everyone shunned him, refusing to take the charity offered. But for Kiia it was a dream come true and she was released into the school’s custody. During her four years of training Kiia struggled to make friends. Her background meant she was shunned by many and their feelings weren’t helped by her difficulties in moving out of the survival mode she’d been in for 5 years. She got into a lot of trouble, mostly fights. She didn’t look for it but it found her. Flying was her escape. At first it had been a goal, a need to understand every aspect of the first place she had ever called home; but she loved flying and she had a talent for it, bolstered by her time with the Beaumonde Bruisers. She spent those four years dreaming of endless skies and a lifetime at the helm of her own vehicle.
Graduation came and reality hit Kiia hard. She was one of the best in her class but no one wanted a pilot with her background. She scraped a few jobs with various crews of less than reputable positions but they were always short runs, little more than a few weeks at a time. The last one was a bank heist. The crew tried to stiff her on her share of the payment, claiming that she deserved less because she’d stayed with the ship and piloting was so much easier than robbing a bank. Insulted, Kiia set the ship to a trajectory that would see it crash into on the surface of Boros but at an angle that would ensure the ship wasn’t destroyed, only damaged enough to require repairs before being able to take flight. She took the ship’s only shuttle with the intention of leaving her now former crew but it malfunctioned, trapping her inside and remaining attached to the ship. The malfunction also sent an electrical surge through the ship, destroying much of the circuitry and altering the ship’s trajectory and putting it dangerously close to another ship – the Serendipity.
The underside of Kiia’s ship caught the topside of Serendipity’s right fin and tore it open. Kiia’s shuttle was dislodged in the collision and bounced after the ship until both ground to a halt a little over a mile from the Serendipity. Bruised and bleeding, Kiia forced her way out of the now broken shuttle. She was immediately pounced on by her old crew who saw fit to try and beat the life out of her. She was saved by Kale and his crew and treated by the ship’s medic. The captain checked on her regularly and they talked. She told him her story and he explained that they had gone to Boros to stock up on spare parts and were looking for a pilot. She offered up the little money she had to cover the cost of the damage and asked if she could work off the rest of her debt by piloting the Serendipity. Kale agreed.
She has been a member of the crew for a little over a year and has never crashed. She will occasionally find trouble if she ventures out of the ship’s hull, like the time she put a hole in the walls just by touching one of Riley’s guns, effectively ensuring she would never be allowed to hold a firearm of any description. But these incidents are rare and usually more amusing than dangerous.
Skills: Excellent pilot. Knows very basic engineering as it’s kinda a requirement for her craft and has detailed knowledge on the electrical interior of the equipment in the hull. Can hotwire just about any vehicle.
Relationships: Knows everyone on the ship and calls them by their first name. The exception to this is Riley who she calls “Shep” in retaliation for the fact that Shep seems to go out of her way to break Kiia’s no entry rule.
Other: Nada.
Sign Up Number 1~
Name: Riley Shepard
Age: 27
Gender: Female
Status: Crew, she’s the weapon specialist.
Description: Stands at 5’8’’, with an agile, lithe build and modest curves, Riley dressed in loose, light tops often exposing her shoulders and jeans (she loves jeans), on colder days she’ll have a tank top with a baggy sweater. Her long hair is a warm shade of brown, and is often tied up in a loose, often half-assed bun (with some sort of Asian, colourful clip or comb holding most-ish of the hair up) or sometimes, left down. On missions that require her particular skills, it’s tied back in a low ponytail, with one or two bangs framing her face.
She wears many bangles, bracelets, a couple of rings and at least one necklace. And her left forearm is always covered in a skin tight black cloth. Underneath of it are self-inflicted scars that cover the entire area, forming a strange, ever growing pattern very few have seen. She also has scars all over her, she says they’re from the war, but some look far too gruesome to be from the war.
Personality: Riley is nice enough, though she tends to be introverted at times. She has a mild sarcastic edge, and a good, if sometimes gutter-minded sense of humour. All around she’s pretty easy to get along with, however she cannot stand liars or egos. Riley strangely has a nasty, very dangerous temper. She won’t scream or yell, in fact Riley gets very very quiet when her temper has hit its limit. Her first instinct when provoked or angered to the point of silence is to end the problem, permanently. This often leads to violence, and Riley, despite not appearing to be a balls-out fighter, is quite capable of holding her own in a fight, and doesn’t lose often.
History: Riley was a sniper in the Alliance military during the war, and it was discovered she had quite the talent for it. Despite having a promising future in the military, when the war was finished, so was Riley. She left, and travelled from planet to planet for years, never staying in one place to long.
One ship she rode on, never made it to its destination. Out on the rim, the ship was attacked by Reavers and Riley survived; barely, by sealing herself in a room off the main corridor (after managing to kill to reavers that had attacked her). There wasn’t much to do in the room besides listening to the screams of the people outside, and the horrors that were unleashed upon them.
Calgary’s ship happened upon the dead vessel some time later, and he found Riley still sealed in the room. Riley has never fully recovered, and like the Reavers, has evolved the tendency to cut into her flesh (her scarred arm) and has a nasty violent temper (she however, doesn’t rape, eat and sew skin into her clothing). No one on the crew (passangers besides maybe Lou have no idea this happened)knows quite what she went through, but they know better than to ask her about it. Kiia is a little too recent to know about the Reaver happening.
Skills: She has a (un)healthy obsession with guns, particularly her sniper rifle. She can modify many different sorts of firearms, big or small, can make her own, special bullets and even create explosives seemingly out of nothing. Riley can hold her own in a fight, and is quite skilled with her combat knife. She is also the one and only controller of the two large cannons now strapped onto the Serendipity… Oh, she can also cook quite well, given that they actually have real food on the ship..
Relationship(s): Friends with Calgary, and respects Lou like a father. Open to more. She loves to annoy Kiia by ignoring her ‘no entry’ rule.
Other: Her puppy! She has an Australian Shepherd as a pet, and it’s white and grey, with some tan mixed in and mismatched eyes (blue and brown). Her dog’s name is Fly, is extraordinarily smart for a pooch. Riley’s other cargo is her very large, very powerful sniper rifle, and other numerous guns and such she has stowed away on her shuttle. She also has a few crates of random ingredients and such also stored on her shuttle and tools, all notably for making bombs or fixing firearms… Um yes… XD
Description: well built, about 5' 9", somewhat paler than normal with silver eyes and tends to keep his light brown hair short. occasionally has seizures from his past drugs use. Name: Elanor Smith
Age: 24 (Born 2494)
Gender: Female
Status: Crew - Medic
Description: Elanor stands around 5'7" and has green eyes with hints of blue. Coming from a winter covered planet she is fairly pale. Her hair is chestnut brown and rather wavy and long. Most of the time she wears it down with two front pieces pulled back into a very small ponytail, this keeps her hair off her shoulders. Her bangs are layered ranging from small pieces near her part to longer pieces that reach her mouth. If she is in surgery or doing something labour intensive she pulls it back into a full ponytail.
Elanor is of average build and doesn't really dress to flatter her shape for the most part. She normally sticks to tank-tops and light pants because she over-heats easily. She normally sticks to neutral tones but also is a fan of odd clothing. From time to time she wears patch-work skirts or Celtic style shirt, but for the mostly she doesn't put much effort into her looks, seeing as things could get messy at any point.
She keeps a flip open knife in her pocket (mostly used for eating apples) and a hunting knife tucked in her right boot. When going off the ship she also wears a pistol and holster on her right side. Lastly she wears her brothers dog tags around her neck that he sent home to prove he was still alive after the war.
Personality: Cheerful as a Yinyang day is long and does her best to keep the mood up in hard times. Shes a hard-worker and very devoted, she believes in 'work is work' as long as innocent are not harmed in the process. Coming from a small town she enjoys simple things, especially flowers; where she's from she didn't see them as a child.
History: Grew up on St. Albans, in a town called Baikal. She is the third of six children born to a miner and a local doctor. Elanor assisted her mother since she was young as most children of Bailkal follow in their parents footsteps. She knows her trade inside and out and although the core planets probably wouldn't accept her as a doctor she is one of the best around the border and rim planets.
Although coming from a very tight net community Elanor was closest to her oldest brother. After the war she received from him but after a few years the messages suddenly stopped, fearing the worst she set out to find what happened to him. Having no way off of St. Albans due to lack of funds, she found the Serendipity and Calgary. She offered a trade off; her skills for free room n' board and small wages, he agreed to her terms and she has been a part of the crew for two years now.
Elanor uses every port landing to ask around about her brother but rarely gets any leads. Around early May she stopped asking people at port questions and stopped obsessing about his whereabouts. She's now a little less stressed and takes more time to enjoy the company of the crew.
Skills: Medic
Silent on her feet
Excellent knife skills both on and off the table
Decent with a pistol
Can sew
Relationships:
Views Calgary as a friend and he is the one she will talk too when she is feeling down though she may not always actually talk about what's troubling her.
Friends with Riley and worries quite a bit about her. Elanor helps to keep Riley's arm from getting infected though she has since learned not to ask questions about it or Riley's past.
She is on friendly terms with Kiia and is probably the only crew member to listen to her no entry rule. She listens to the point where she will actually never step foot in the cockpit, and will speak from the doorway.
Open to more =D
Other: Loves 'Mid-winter' Apples, which are normal red apples, she just calls the Mid-winter Apples because on her planet that was the only time apples where imported. Generally spends her earnings on a few apples and any medical supplies the ship needs.
She isn't a fan of tropical planets, viewing them as way to hot.
Name: James ‘Jim’ McAlistair
Age: 33
Gender: Male
Status: Passenger, err, Colchester? He gets on then? sureeeee
Description: Jim has short, dirty blond hair that’s cut rather short, though now it’s a bit grown out that you can ruffle it. He has soft blues and a tad of a tan because he spent a lot of time in the sun. He’s tall, standing at 6’3’’, and often wears jeans or cargo shorts. He’s got a slight build, enough to keep the pounds from showing and maybe have a slight six-pack, but nothing major. He usually wears long sleeve shirts or t-shirts of the white, grey, or black variety that are half tucked into his pants. He has a sweet smile, but usually he’s seen smirking.
Personality: Jim can be charming, cute and nice when he wants. However, usually he is sarcastic, playful and makes snide comments whenever he wants. He doesn’t really aim to hurt feelings, just likes to push people’s buttons. That said, when he does end up insulting someone, especially a woman, he can feel pretty dumb and bad about it. He’ll apologize (unless you REALLY got him angry), even if he doesn’t know quite what he’s done. He doesn’t seem to have much respect for authority, and treats everyone in the same joking manner. His seriousness doesn’t come out often, only when he’s very angry, or it’s required. He’s also a very good liar. Oh, and he’s a bit of a charmer when it comes to women.
History: James is Lou’s youngest son, and the two have never seen eye to eye. After the unification war, James left with little word. It’s unknown why he just decided to leave, but he hasn’t seen his father until he booked passage on the Serendipity. The few letters the two did exchange were always awkward, and whatever vid-contact they had, always ended up being heated.
Skills: He’s incredibly good at lying, stealing, setting up illegitimate jobs and can climb/run/jump rather well (like in the movie Prince of Persia, and to some extent, Assassin’s Cred, but nothing overly epic). He has contacts on nearly every world, oh and he came onboard with a tortoise, though after a day he ‘looses’ it and now it wanders around the ship, only come to him to get food.
Relationships: Lou’s troublesome son. :o Open~
Other: Pistol, Tortoise, some other stuff.. Yeah.. Nothing important? OH, everyone calls him Jim, cept maybe his father, no exceptions.
Name: Lin Pei (known as “Harper”. She thinks her name is far too Asian amongst the rest of the crew, so chose a more English-sounding nickname).
Age: 23
Gender: Female
Status: Engineer/Mechanic (Captain of her own little shuttle)
Description: Pei doesn’t exactly look like a mechanic in physique... She’s 5’5’’, with a slim build; what muscle she does have shows on her arms (she often needs help carrying heavier machine parts). She has a really nice figure, which she just doesn’t show off in her clothing. She normally wears a plain coloured t-shirt with denim dungarees, with the top half done up most of the time. The trouser part of the dungarees are long and quite baggy and covers most of her sturdy workmen’s boots. She’s Chinese, but her hair is light brown, some of the lighter highlights bordering on blonde. It’s about shoulder length, with a fringe that goes straight across her forehead, and bangs that frame her face nicely. Her eyes are dark brown, although often covered by oversized goggles. The glass of the goggles are tinted black, in order to protect her eyes when she’s welding, and when they’re not in use, they sit on her head. Her skin is nicely tanned, although often dirty from oil and such. Her dungarees have many pockets for tools, and has a tablet in her back pocket that’s linked both to her shuttle and Serendipity with the general stats of both of them.
Personality: Harper, well, is a little odd. In general, she’s quite a cheery person, happy to just get on with her job. However, she’s not one to give much away about herself. No one really knows what planet she’s from and although many have given a good guess, she refuses to tell them. She’s a hard worker, always wanting what she thinks is best for the ship (although it’s not hers, exactly, she’s often quite possessive of it), whether that be within the hardware or software. She’s got a brain for mechanics and maths, with not much else, so that’s normally what’s on her mind. Her first language is Mandarin, but she is completely fluent in English. When people irritate her, or she doesn’t want to answer a question, she’ll reply in Mandarin or put on a heavy Chinese accent and say “No English” slowly. She likes to meditate occasionally, sometimes when a solution to a problem just won’t come to her, other times just because she wants to. She hates it when people interrupt her though. She's a very fast talker, and likes to explain things, but goes off on little tangents during explaining things, so loses people with her trail of thought. It's worse when she's excited or had a brilliant idea that she just has to get out, and won't let anyone interrupt her, no matter how hard they try, when she's in this mode.
History: She never ever talks about her life before docking on the ship and probably never will. Most people assume it’s nothing horrific, otherwise how could she be so damn cheery all the time? One day, she was flying around, as you do, when she accidently picked a fight with a ship much bigger than hers. They heavily damaged her shuttle, the engines suffered in particular, and she only survived by re-routing power to her shields and this cunning cloaking device that she’d installed not long ago. So they left her alone, drifting through space, til she bumped into the Serendipity. Literally. There was not much she could do about it, really, since her engines wouldn’t work, and uncloaking wouldn’t reveal herself to them in time to avoid the inevitable. So she contacted them by hacking their communications and bargained with them to let her dock... Somehow! Pei never really intended on staying on the Serendipity for very long, but she started getting more and more involved with the ship and just ended up staying there. At first, she was paying for her docking, but she's working for her right to stay there instead now. She’s still adamant she’ll fix her shuttle, she just hasn’t found the right parts yet.
Skills: Harper’s the mechanic, doing general maintenance and modifications most of the time. She’s good at programming software and maintaining that too. Also rather good at hacking, but only when needed (most of the time, anyway). Also, she can pilot things (normally only her little shuttle (which doesn’t work anyway), but takes over from Kiia on the odd occasion that she’s needed).
Relationships: Friends with all the crew, but most passengers never see her. Often caught bickering with Calgary over modifications (I imagine their conversations to be hilarious, him with his thick Indian accent and her with her Chinese XD).
Other: As well as her shuttle, she has a cargo hold in the left wing. It’s full of a load of “junk” that she claims is useful and refuses to throw it away. She has a small monkey called Duìzhǎng (he looks like Jack the monkey from PotC) that seems to know exactly where everything is in her cargo hold, and otherwise just seems to irritate the rest of the crew (and passengers). Duìzhǎng doesn’t understand any English either.
The shuttle itself is small, probably only big enough for 4 people to live comfortably without it being too much of a squish. It’s clearly been modified (its weapons, for example, are far too superior for a shuttle of its type) but it’s also in quite a bad state of repair (notably, its engines). She’s working on that, though, whenever she isn’t working on the Serendipity.
Alright, so a few things... I'm using Google Translate (XD) for everything in Mandarin. Obviously it's not so good at backwards translating so I'm gonna keep a record of exactly what I intended her to say in English. And I'm never gonna write it in the characters either, cos I think it's nicer to have some idea of how words are pronounced.
I'm also not gonna give you translations either, unless you really wanna know what she's said and you ask me nicely. You can just guess by her tone of voice XD
I guess you guys can Google Translate her too in your posts... Please let me know what she's said though!
