View Full Version : [All] Nuzlocke Challenge

I'm guessing most people know it already, but for those who don't:

The most basic Nuzlocke rules, as they were first introduced, are as follows:
-Any Pokémon that faints is considered dead, and must be released.
-The player may only catch the first Pokémon encountered in each area, and none else. If the first Pokémon encountered faints or flees, there are no second chances.

While not exactly a definite rule, the general consensus is that players must also nickname all of their Pokémon, for the sake of forming stronger emotional bonds.

Optional rules
Though the above rules tend to stay consistent with all challengers, many optional variations and amendments to the rules also exist to further adjust difficulty. These include, but are not limited to:
- Adjusting the first encounter rule to ban duplicate captures.
- Considering a black out/white out to be "game over," even if there are Pokémon left in the PC.
- Going to options and making the battle style "set". Making you unable to switch out between your foes' Pokémon.
- Banning the use of potions and healing items, relying only on Pokémon Centers for healing.
- Banning the use of Pokémon Centers, relying only on potions and healing items for healing.
- Limiting Pokémon Center visits to a certain number per town.
- Banning the use of held items.
- Limiting the number of Poké Balls to purchase per Poké Mart.
- Banning the use of Master Balls.
- Rather than releasing the Pokémon, it can be migrated or permanently boxed should it happen to faint.
- The player may not evolve captured Pokémon, but evolved Pokémon may be caught.
- No catching/using of legendaries.
- As a mercy rule, allowing 1-3 "second chances" or revives of fallen team members

I went with the two standard rules for my first try. Playing pokemon Blue, ofcourse, every game counts (even BW), but I put this up here in Classic because I love those generations and this might trigger some nostalgic feelings.

I'm in Vermillion right now, with a team of Wartortle, Butterfree, Pidgeotto all l.25 and a newly caught Drowzee l.15. Lost a good Jigglypuff, Nidorina and Pidgeotto (my first) already.

So far it's a great challenge, too bad I came across Pidgey as first encounter for many routes. Bleg.

Anyone done one before? Or willing to try?

I could give it a shot... I have a Leaf Green game I'm strongly considering restarting, since I'm only about halfway through and I was intending to migrate most of the Pokemon on it up through the more current versions anyway.

Well, my Emulator kept crashing when I entered Rock Tunnel so I had to restart.

Chose Charmander and went up. Training, training, training. Caught a Rattata at Route # (the one towards the league) and a Caterpie in Viridian Forest. Trained them all up and beat brock. Rest of the challenge was pretty similiar, since I didn't really catch any new pokemon. Did catch a Paras in Mt.Moon, but I already had Butterfree. Cleared Moon and reached Cerulean. Caught a Bellsprout after beating my rival on Nugget Bridge and trained it up aswell. Not one pokemon died so far, yay!

Beat Misty easily with new Weepingbell and powerhorse Raticate and gave Carl (which is my raticate) Bubbelbeam > Water Gun. More training around Vermillion, including SS. Anne, where Charles, my trusty Charmeleon died :( Nooooooo.

Picked up a Drowzee around Vermillion and trained it. More battling, more training, beat Surge easily and hopped towards Rock Tunnel (hoping that my game wouldn't freeze on PlayGuy). More crappy trainers on that route, but Arthur (weepingbell) fainted due Selfdestruct, crap! My elementals were gone! Nooooo˛

Once I had exited Rock Tunnel and healed in Lavender, I caught myself a Sandshrew on the grassy patch between Safron and Lavender. Sandslash is one of my favorites, so badass. Training, training, training. Then completed all Team Rocket side quests for now (Casino and Ghost-tower) and felt pretty proud of my team. Returned to Celadon to face the gym, but saved since I felt pretty sleepy.

Pokemon team:

Carl (Raticate) l.35: Hyper Fang, Quick Attack, Bubblebeam, Tail Whip
Miles (Hypno) l.38: Psychic, Hypnosis, Dream Eater, Tri Attack
Finn (Sandslash): 36: Slash, Dig, Rock Slide, Sand-attack

Oh, and I dumped Michelle, my Butterfree in Day Care, since I'm not planning on using it anymore.

Need some new team additions soon! Hope I get lucky with first encouter.

Tooodles.

I started one of these the other night in Emerald!

I am using the 'No duplicate' rule, and no items IN battle rule (Healing is ok AFTER a fight, but not during - Exception: IF your opponent uses an item, you are allowed to use one too). I am also using the division rule, where as if you enter a cave, or a forest, when you come out the other side, if it isn't in a city, then that route (even if its the same number as when you went in) is considered a different 'Zone' for a catch.

I am currently in Rustboro City, training up for that first rock gym leader...

Current team:

Silcoon - Lv 7 (caught in Petalberg Forest)
Cascoon - Lv 7 (caught on 2nd part of Route 104)
Marill - Level 7 (caught on 1st part of route 104)
Poochyena - Lv 7 (caught on route 103)
Zigzagoon - Lv 8 (caught on route 102)
Torchic - Lv 9 (starter, route 101)

Great! Keep it going, RSE was the 'original' generation of Nuzlockers, since well it featered Nuzleaf:D

Well, I flattened Erica with no problem, cleared out Ghost Tower where Carl died :( Fuck! it was one level away from learning Super Fang. Boogah. Caught myself a Snorlax instead, which would absolutely dominate the game from there-on. Bullocks, it fainted, noooo. Gave up on catches then, and didn't feel like using the mon's in my box so I trained some more down Cycling Road and the fishing routes.

Caught myself a Doduo between Cycling Road and Fushia and I was stoked! Dodrio is one of my favorites and a total beast in RBY. Hup hup, training, then smashed Koga in a second. Saved there.

Nate (Dodrio) l.43: Drill Peck, Peck, Fury Attack, Growl
Miles (Hypno) l.43: Psychic, Hypnosis, Dream Eater, Tri Attack
Hitch (Sandslash): 44: Slash, Dig, Rock Slide, Sand-attack

MeLoVeGhOsTs
23rd August 2011, 07:26 AM
When I finally beat Koga, I visited Safzone and got myself two new HM's! I used the Surf HM and caught a Tentacool, which I quickly raised. Finished the sea routes, cinnabar and booted out Sliph and co. Finally, I was ready for boss rocket, in sliph AND in the gym. Beat him with great ease actually and hurried on to pokemon league.

This was actually the easiest league I ever faced. Hypnosis+Dreameater cleaned houses; as did Swordsdance + Wrap. Boom done.

Nuzlocke challenge completed, yay!

Final team:

Tony (Tentacruel) l.57: Swordsdance, Wrap, Surf, Hydro Pump
Hitch (Sandslash) l.56: Earthquake, Rock Slide, Fissure, Slash
Nate (Dodrio) l.56: Drill Peck, Peck, Tri Attack, Agility
Miles (Hypno) l.58: Psychic, Hypnosis, Dream Eater, Body Slam

Soooo... Where to begin...

1. Any Pokémon that faints is considered dead, and must be released.
2. The player may only catch the first Pokémon encountered in each area, and none else. If the first Pokémon encountered faints or flees, there are no second chances.
3. If a duplicate Pokemon is encountered, it may be ignored.
4. A black out/white out is "Game Over," even if there are Pokémon left in the PC.
5. No catching/using of legendaries.

These are the rules I shall follow.

Expect an actual update soon.

Well, no matter. I started, got a Snivy in Nuvema Town and a Patrat on Route 1. Currently am in Accumula; will post an actual update when I feel like playing some more.

I didn't fully understand the appeal of Nuzlockes, AKA 'Pokemon: Hard Mode' before. Now, I do.

Progress:

So, I started my journey in Unova anew, as I said, with a Snivy from Nevuma Town and a Patrat from Route 1. Let me introduce them a bit before I get any further:

The Snivy I got from Prof. Juniper is a boy who I named Veiver (pronounced 'VIE-v@r') has a Quirky Nature and 'good endurance.' So, I see him as being a witty and patient little battler, able to take it as he dishes it out. A fine personality for my starter, IMHO.

The Patrat I found on Route 1 is... a little different. Her name is Lucca, and she has a Hasty Nature and is 'strongly defiant.' I take this to mean she's something like Ash's Charizard, eager to fight on her terms, not mine. Our relationship is rocky at best.

So, after the three of us met up with Team Plasma, Ghetsis, and N for the first time in Accumula Town, I shopped for some Potions, rested up my team, and gradually I trained them up to Level 8 on the outskirts of the town before I finally felt brave enough to head out on Route 2.

I had literally not taken two steps into the grass before a Pokemon emerged - a Purrloin. Since both the area and the Pokemon were new, I caught the little guy, for indeed that's what the Purrloin was: A male, with a quick temper and a Bold nature. A sort of Scrappy Doo, I'd imagine, eager to take on anybody itching for a battle. I named him 'Raptor,' and then began to train him up to be on-par with the rest of the team. We had our first Trainer battles, where we had a few close calls, but nothing we couldn't handle.

Lucca, however, seemed to get annoyed with my recklessness, yelling at me in her native tongue whenever I battled instead of healing damage that could lead to a fatal critical the next turn. But Raptor, the little devil that he was, insisted he'd be fine and to bring on more opponents. And so, the world did - one with Raptor's own face. Another Purrloin, two levels higher than Raptor but with HP low enough to match his then-maximum. He took a Scratch, which did minimal damage, so I responded in kind.

My opponent responded with another Scratch. And this one was a jugular-rending critical hit.

It was then that I finally truly realized just what a Nuzlocke was... As I looked down at the first Pokemon I'd ever captured to have died in battle.

The remainder of Route 2 was trivial. All I can remember of significance was carrying that dead Purrloin back to the Accumula Town Pokemon Center. Veiver was quiet the whole way back, trying his best to keep our spirits up. But Lucca... She wouldn't even look at me.

The nurse at the Pokemon Center healed my Pokemon... or, the ones that she still could heal, anyway. I placed Raptor's Pokeball in the final Box of the PC, praying the whole time that nobody else would have to join him in that Box... or the 'Graveyard,' as I called it.

A few hours later, I was nearing Striaton City. I told myself that giving up because of Raptor's death would make that death have been for nothing. I pondered the strangeness of the situation... of one of my Pokemon actually DYING. It's almost too ludicrous to really believe. But it'd happened.

I was snapped out of my thoughts by Bianca, who demanded a battle from me outside the City gates. I tried to say no, but she wouldn't listen. So I sent Lucca out to battle her Lillipup. Lucca seemed angry that I'd sent her into battle, but nonetheless she seemed even more annoyed by Bianca's happy-go-lucky attitude. She beat that Lillipup senseless before I had Veiver take over and finish the fight, before things got too messy.

Or before there was another casualty.

After the battle, I headed to the Pokemon Center in Striaton and then into the Dreamyard, where a girl seemed to sympathize with me. She gave me a Panpour, a girl with a Lonely Nature and the ability to take hits. The land-dwelling sea monkey's description seemed to fit me as well as her at the time... Nonetheless, I named her Sogay and welcomed her to the team. As she and my current teammates exchanged greetings, I thought back to what Prof. Juniper had asked of me and my friends, and then I remembered there was a Gym in Striaton...

Pokemon:

Veiver, LV10 Snivy(M)
-Tackle
-Leer
-Vine Whip
-Wrap
My anchor at the moment, he's the only friend I really have with me so far.

Lucca, LV10 Patrat(F)
-Tackle
-Leer
-Bite
-Bide
Formerly a rocky ally, she seems to hate me more than ever since Raptor's death. She'll begin ignoring my orders soon, no doubt.

Sogay, LV10 Panpour(F)
-Scratch
-Leer
-Lick
-Water Gun
'The quiet one.' I dunno how much she trusts me yet, but she and Veiver get along well.

Deceased:

Raptor, Purrloin(M)

He thought he could take on anybody. In my naivete, so did I. Rest in peace, little bandito.

Blade, did Veiver die or did the cat die? Your writeup has Veiver being placed in the graveyard box. Otherwise...this is the exact reason why I don't do Nuzlockes. :o I'd be too effing pissed to continue on when I'd get crit-killed by some pansy ass punk :o

AND OMFG B/W Nuzlocke so hard because of level scaling :o

I did two more Nuzlocke's, but both of them failed. One got a black out, the other one got only one pokemon left and I didn't feel like re-training loads more so I restarted again. This time I'm going to write it down a bit:D To make it simple, I'll be using Blade's rules as well.

So, I started off with Oshawott (it's my least favorite, but I used the other two in my previous games) and got moving! Killed the first pokemon I came across on Route 1, so boogah. Hurried up, did the whole N-speech and battle and moved to route 2 for my first pokemon. BOOM, a male Purrloin with a Serious nature. Sly and serious, looks like me:D

Trained them up 'till level 10 and 12 respectively and took my risk against a trainer for the first time, defeated the rest of the route, bianca and Cheren, picked up a Pansear I won't use and clobbered the gymtrainers. Now all that remains is Cilan.

Pokemon:

Oshawott (m)
Nature: Serious
Level: 14
Moves: Tackle | Tail Whip | Water Gun | Water Sport

Rolph (m) [Purrloin]
Nature: Serious
Level: 13
Moves: Scratch | Growl | Assist | Sand-attack

MeLoVeGhOsTs
9th November 2011, 01:54 PM
Got Cilan by spamming Sand Attack while he was Work'ing Up, then growled him down and kept hitting. Two potions as well. Yay!

Then did the Munna-arc, with involved me catching a Munna myself. I named him Bill, lucky me. Trained up, until it learned Psybeam and pwned everyone's asses. Then proceeded all the way up to Normal-town (forgot the name), did some training there and Rolph and Oshawott evolved! My poke's were all 'round level 20 when I entered the gym, finished off the gymtrainers, healed up and confronted the gymleader. Bill was a very handy asset to the team, with sleepmoves, recoverymoves, decent stats, no complaints there. Took down Herdier, and then put Watchog asleep before Rolph finished it with Rock Smash.

Rescue the Dragon-head: yesh. Picked up a Petitil in the forest and swapped it for a Cottonee called Fluffee. Trained it up in the forest while defeating team plasma, but Bill died! Nooooooo. I cried, released it and did more training, more training, up till the 3D bridge into Castelia. Cleared out the town, took out Plasma again and challenged Burgh. Poison Tail was annoying, this was actually the first time I was having problems with Burgh. At least if finally defeated it, using Fluffee with StunSpore and Growth+Gigadrain. Good times.

Saved at the dessert, since I got a crappy Scraggy that I'm not going to use.

Pokemon:

Mazzo (m) [Dewott]
Nature: Serious
Level: 25
Moves: Retaliate | Tail Whip | Water Pulse | Razor Shell

Rolph (m) [Liepard]
Nature: Serious
Level: 25
Moves: Pursuit | Rock Smash | Fake Out | Sand-attack

Fluffee (f) [Cottonee]
Nature: Modest
Level: 29
Moves: Leech Seed | Stun Spore | Growth | Giga Drain

MeLoVeGhOsTs

Still at it. At Celestial Tower right now, with the same three fighters (can you imagine that?!). Caught some others aswell, but didn't wanna train them I guess. Oh, more, Fluffee and Mazzo evolved:)

I need a good pokemon to balance out the typings..

Pokemon:

Mazzo (m) [Samurott]
Nature: Serious
Level: 41
Moves: Return | Scald | Mega Horn | Aqua Jet

Rolph (m) [Liepard]
Nature: Serious
Level: 41
Moves: Assurance | Return | Fake Out | Hone Claws

Fluffee (f) [Whimscott]
Nature: Modest
Level: 43
Moves: Leech Seed | Stun Spore | Cotton Guard | Giga Drain

I... don't update is largely as MLG does.

In exchange, I offer a bit more detail.

It has been awhile, but I recall my last decision to tackle the Striaton Gym. My newest companion, Sogay the Panpour, on-board with the idea, we set to work toughening ourselves up on the outskirts of the town. Once everyone was at at least Level 10, we stormed the

Upon arrival at our destination, we were met with a few Trainers who weren't too difficult to take out, though they DID give Lucca a bit more of a hassle than her sturdy little self was used to. But they still fell soon enough, and the Gym Leader - Chili - took the floor, thinking his Fire Pokemon had my Veiver beat. Then, Sogay shit all over his team and earned me the Trio Badge from him.

With a Badge in-hand, Lucca seemed to grudgingly accept me a bit more as a leader, but I'm still pretty far from winning her over, I'm sure. Regardless, a couple of meetings with Team Plasma goons quickly taught her that I was, if nothing else, the lesser of 2 evils.

Now that I could go to Route 3, I decided to capture another Pokemon as my first priority. And, despite interruptions by Cheren and Bianca, I found quite a catch (no pun intended) - a proud, Naughty young Blitzle(M), whom I captured and nicknamed 'Zanzibar.' The newcomer easily gained some quick experience from the preschoolers' Pokemon nearby, but an actual battle against other Trainers on the route really tested his mettle.

Near the entrance to Wellspring Cave, however, a Pokemon Breeder tested him, too. Her Patrat gave him a pop quiz on critical hits, Tackling him fresh out of the gate and knocking him over... It's been weeks, but I can still hear the resounding CRACK of his skull against the stony foot of the Wellspring Plateau... How ironic that my own Patrat would come to the rescue, a blind fury overtaking her and devastating the Breeder's team so badly that she bribed me with Oran berries to end the match and leave her be. It took a lot of restraint to accept, honestly, but Sogay and Veiver kept us from doing anything we'd further regret.

Like on Route 2, we returned to the previous town's Pokemon Center in shame, Zanzibar's Poke Ball deposited in the same PC Box that held Raptor's remains. But we couldn't grieve for long, this time - Bianca's intrusion had been about a robbery by Team Plasma, and Hell, I was still in need of something to take out my anger and sorrow on. So my team and I marched back to the Wellspring Cave entrance.

Team Plasma stood no chance... Savagely, my Pokemon tore theirs asunder. Blood splattered against the rocky walls, and eventually a pair of the Grunts finally attacked together in some hope of bringing the situation under control. But Cheren's timely assistance helped drive them back, forcing them to return the stolen Pokemon and run off. Cheren didn't mention to Bianca how brutal the fight had gotten, which I appreciated. He simply left me to my own devices, asking me to return the stolen Pokemon when I was done.

I spent what felt like a good deal of time in the cave, alone. Sogay and Veiver waited outside. Lucca was closer to the entrance, not sure what to think. I didn't blame her... Finally, I decided to leave, but a noise like rolling pebbles stopped me. I looked around, finally locating an Everstone-kicking Roggenrola. It looked (or at least I assumed that was what it was doing) curiously at me, nudging the Everstone closer.

A short while later, I returned to the preschool to rest my Pokemon.

My FOUR Pokemon.

A few round trips along the route later, and eventually we were at Nacrene City. It's time for the second challenge now...

Pokemon:

Veiver, LV14 Snivy(M)
-Tackle
-Growth
-Vine Whip
-Wrap
Originally good-natured and relaxed, I can't help but feel he acts braver around me than he really feels...

Lucca, LV14 Patrat(F)
-Cut
-Detect
-Bite
-Bide
Standoffish and enigmatic, her stubbornness seems to be as much of an unlikely ally as it is a hindrance.

Sogay, LV14 Panpour(F)
-Fury Swipes
-Leer
-Lick
-Water Gun
Despite how rough things are going, she seems to have perked up a bit since her big win in Striaton. She and Veiver are pretty close.

Moho, LV14(M)
-Rock Blast
-Harden
-Sand-Attack
-Headbutt
Like Sogay, this little guy is Lonely-natured. However, his love of scattering things around got me what may be a useful item. I hope his rocky skin protects him better than Raptor and Zanz were defended...

Deceased:

Raptor, Purrloin(M)
Met on Route 2
LV4 - LV5
He thought he could take on anybody. In my naivete, so did I. Rest in peace, little bandito.

Zanzibar, Blitzle(M)
Met on Route 3
LV8 - LV10
An electrifying ally I REALLY didn't want to lose. He's now in a place where the plague called crits can no longer hurt him.

Cleared out Celestial Tower, trained up all of my pokemon 'till level 45, so Rolph could finally learn Night Slash! Finished off Skyla the gymleader and went up to the cave. Cheren challenged me, which was easy, but Rolph (who was my highest leveled at that time, 47) got critical hit by a Leaf Blade from that stupid Servine. Nooooooo, I really like Liepard:(

I was feeling depressed and decided to use my newly gotten Surf HM and wander this poke-earth for a while. Trained a Litwick that I picked up, but I died after leveling up two levels. Even more depressed now. Cleaned out Route 1, did the cave sidequests, but when I was almost done I remembered the route above Driftveil city. I picked up TM Poison Jab and reached Cobalion's cave. First pokemon I come across: female Axew! I capture it, see that it has a Lonely nature. Speed down, thats not good, but atleast I get atk+!

Raise it up, through the cave and routes and stuff, until I finally reach Iciruss city. Healed and cleared out the Moor of Icarus where my Fraxure evolved into Haxorus. Man, this is going to be epic.

Pokemon:

Mazzo (m) [Samurott]
Nature: Serious
Level: 49
Moves: Return | Aqua Tail | Mega Horn | Aqua Jet

Nature: Modest
Level: 49
Moves: Leech Seed | Hurricane | Cotton Guard | Giga Drain

Axelle (f) [Haxorus]
Level: 50
Moves: Dragon Claw | Brick Break | Dragon Dance | Taunt

Fainted: Rolph (Liepard l. 47), Guy (Litwick l. 29), Bill (Munna, l.22)

My poor Koffing is going to die, I can just feel it... Maybe I should let it have Explosion and use it to take out those DAMNED Claydolls first...

In other news, Combusken evolved... But thats about ALL that has happened since my last update. I blame my IRL exams + a friend getting me hooked on DCUO and back in to Rift.

***Breaking news***

Due to a training acident vs a Magnetric, Crobat has been replaced with Spheal.

***End news***

I strutted, rather cockiliy, up to Tate and Liza... Who black screened me :(

Following the rules, that's the end for me. I cracked out my Soul Silver, and slotted that in. Closing my eyes, and holding down the right button to spin the starters, I ended up with a Male Cyndaquil, which I named Loki (I was watching Thor at the time).

I then saved, and started the most STUPIDEST thing I have ever done. Taking one step, saving. Take one step, save... I managed to make it ALL THE FUCKING way to Mr Pokemon's house AND back without encountering ANYTHING. It only took an hour or so (No, I didn't turn it off. Saving was resetting the 'step counter'). Handed my 5 Pokeballs, the clock said 4.20am, and the sun was rising. Onward!

I stepped out on to route 29. Loki was level 6, and the encounter was a female Pidgey, level 4, who is now known as Freya (Was going to do an all Norse them at this point). Healing up, we headed out to route 30, and added a female Ledyba to the party. Stumped for names, I named it Aluriana (level 3). Realizing it was almost 5am, and I had to be up at 8, I saved and turned it off...

More tomorrow.

Really have to stop staying up till 4am playing pokemon.

I cleaned up the well, Showed Bugsy the power of fire, Punched my rival in the face and then caught some ducks.

I named my Magikarp to honor Blade and his awesomeness that was Mr Fish. After exiting the Ilex Forest, the first thing I walked in to was a mother f**king Ditto. With no breeding allowed, the thing was a useless struggler.

I caught up with Team Plasma and got the Dragonite skull back, nearly getting mob-whacked by one of the Sages in the process before Burgh and Lenora came to my rescue. I returned the Skull and cleared out everybody in the remainder of the forest, then I took the beautiful Skyarrow Bridge (I love that music.) to Castelia City.

It's a Hell of a town. I spent some time just going around sightseeing before doing anything else. My trips through the docks and the main street led me to a company of all places where they held Pokemon battles to determine status. I headed up to the 47th floor and cleaned house against a few workers. My team was at the Level 20-ish milestone and Lucca was about to evolve... I was feeling pretty on top of the world. Things were finally going well for the team!

Clerk Ingrid's Herdier used TAKE DOWN!

And then, once again, that helpless, bloody feeling returned to me. I heard ribs buckle and snap. Lucca flew backwards like a ragdoll, blood dripping from her mouth. She squealed and rolled over, looking up at me... Whatever bond we'd begun to develop was no longer present in her eyes. Instead, they were cold and wet. "Why did you do this?" they seemed to plead to me. "Why are you letting this happen - AGAIN?"

The remainder of that floor quickly became a warzone. Countless workers and their Pokemon were ripped apart by Veiver's razor-edged Leaf Tornado or bludgeoned and buried under Moho's Rock Blasts.

I'm now on the 55th floor, several fallen Clerks and Scientists in my wake. Ahead of me is that janitor that talked me into coming here. He's going to pay for what has happened.

From out of the shadows, I post here AGAIN! Hope everyone had a good holiday, regardless of the one celebrated.

I just recently completed a Nuzlocke in Fire Red, and I've been compiling my notes into what is turning out to be a larger work than anticipated. The question now becomes whether to wait to post it until it's finished, or put it up in the form of journal entries as many people have been doing.

For those interested in how things went, I'm sure the latter option would be more appealing. It's really up to you guys how I go about it.

I LIVE.

It's been a long while since I confronted that janitor... I don't remember how it all went down, but we won. And I got an Exp. Share for winning. So I let the old bastard that took my Lucca live. With two shattered kneecaps. He's still technically alive.

Once I finished the proper... procedures with Lucca and healing the remainder of my team, I decided I'd sightseen enough. I made my way to the Gym, when suddenly some kid comes screming at me with Bianca by her side. Team Plasma had stolen her Munna and were hiding out across the street from the Gym. Since I was already in a grim mood, I kicked the front door in and started beating some ass, but Burgh swung by and broke up the massacre, and Team Plasma's boss gave up the Munna and left peacefully for the moment.

I didn't get Burgh's reasoning. At all. But his Badge was what I was after, not his approval. He said he'd be at the Gym, which was... weird, to say the least. A huge clown-filled beehive of paintings and stained glass? It was like some contemporary art college had vomited on an empty building and the League had endorsed it as a Gym. Whatever, with Sogay, Moho, and Veiver all at level 23 or higher, I had little trouble with the Gym, and I even evolved Sogay once she learned how to Scald. Then came Burgh and his Leavanny, which humiliatingly had type advantages over EVERYBODY... I tried to outpace the Bug with Moho's Rock Blast, but it couldn't break through the Bug's sheer power, and a Razor Leaf counterattack sliced Moho to ribbons in the next round. I nearly blacked out then and there, thinking him to be dead, too.

But then, he got back up. By some miracle, he had survived the critical storm of bladed foliage through his Sturdy Ability. Still, he was in terrible shape. He was shaking and bleeding some mud-colored ichor from several wounds, and for the first time he was making noise - a hollow groan of pain that had a slow rhythm to it, like a pant or a heartbeat.

Despite her death, I could feel Lucca's glare on me again. I recalled Moho and sent out Veiver, who was thankfully able to endure Leavanny's Struggle Bug a bit better. Using Growth, Super Potions, and Tackle, I eventually beat Leavanny in a war of attrition and earned the Insect Badge. Great, but Moho was still in critical shape, so I ran back to the Pokemon Center with all due speed and had the nurse heal him. While I waited, I got a call from Bianca asking for a battle. Seems she'd gotten her confidence back, so now I had to go dash it again. Sigh...

I met her at the city's northern exit, where her sadly underleveled team fell to my trio with ease. It shook her a bit, but she seemed to take it in stride, thanking me and fucking off to wherever her road would take her next. With that done, I could finally proceed onward to Route 4 - and into the desert.

I didn't have to go far, it would seem: A few steps into the blustery sands, I'd already come across a Pokemon... a dead Pokemon, dried to a husk and picked apart by the harsh environment. Snapping at its bones for a few more scraps of flesh was a rather messy Sandile. She seemed unhappy with me approaching her meal, and immediately attacked. Sogay's Fury Swipes took care of her with ease, and I caught her, naming her Mask Scara. She seems a bit strict, and was Adamant that I provide her with satisfactory amounts of meat if we were to travel together. I promised her more food and also slipped the Exp. Share on her, which seemed to appease her. With four Pokemon by my side, I made my way to the Desert Resort, where the sandstorm had gotten even worse. Trainers here were fewer and farther between, and I soon found myself lost.

But then fortune smiled upon me once more, providing me with a keen, Hardy little guide to light the way to my next destination...

Time to revive this thread with a FireRed Nuzlocke run! Yay!

Now, I'm pretty terrible at Nuzlocke runs, honestly, so in order to make this a little easier on myself, I decided to go with my prefered starter this time around -- Squirtle. As of right now, I'm on "Day Three" of my journey, but right now I'm gonna give you a nice synopsis if I can remember to.

Here we go--

GREY'S JOURNEY
Day ONE

I made my way into the professor's laboratory where he presented to me a choice between three of his remaining pokémon -- a bulbasaur, a charmander, and a squirtle. His grandson, Green, was also there. Green's been somewhat of a rival of mine ever since we were little kids, but he had an (somewhat undeserved) ego on him. He let me choose my pokémon first (most likely so that he could choose the one with a type advantage).

It bothered me none, and I made my choice -- squirtle.

New catch!

Bashful

I excitedly hugged the girl, promising the professor that I'd take care of her as best as I could. As I expected, Green decided to go with bulbasaur, and we immediately decided to have a pokémon battle right outside the lab! I was excited -- my first pokémon battle!

Without hesitation, we both called out our attacks in unison, and my tiny turtle did me proud. With a combination of tail whips and tackles, she KOed Green's grass pokémon with ease, and earned her first level up!

Green was a little bitter about the defeat, but kept his cool and left without saying much of anything. I was too happy to even pay attention. With our first victory on our belts, Levi and I made our way outside the city limits and into Rt. 1, where we'd find our own first wild encounters. Unfortunately, because I was sans any poké balls, I couldn't really capture anything. Oh well, at least it was good experience for Levi.

We finally reached the first stop on our voyage -- Viridian City. It was a virtual metropolis of sorts: the Capital of Kanto. There was a gym here, but I've been told that the leader here was way too strong for a first timer like me, so I avoided him like the plague. I decided my first stop was going to be the PokéMart to buy some balls.

...but the shopkeep made me run an errand, which led me back to the professor's lab. He took the parcel and gave me and Green (who, for some reason, decided to come back as well) a pair of Pokédexes and told us to record data on as many pokémon as we could as pennance for the pokémon we took. Wonderful.

On the bright side, at least he gave us some poké balls!

We said our goodbyes and I went back to the city, deciding that I had missed my chance to catch any pokémon on Rt. 1 based on a technicality. However, I knew that Rt. 22 wasn't too far from here, and I raced for the tall grass!

Enter my first pokémon catch: Ratatoskr.

RATATOSKR
M Rattata (Lv. 3)

...unfortunately, it wasn't meant to last. While I was grinding him, Ratatoskr took a swift critical tackle, and fell to his death prematurely. I was careless. I'm definitely going to hafta be more caref--

But then Green showed up and challenged me to another battle. Oh crap. Fortunately, Levi was more than enough to take on his pidgey and bulbasaur. At least she's prepared...

Only one day in my journey, and I've already killed something. This was going to be tough, definitely...

Team
http://www.pokemonelite2000.com/pkfrlg007.pngLevi is somewhat of an oxymoron. She's nervous and bashful, but she's well versed in battling, and seems to have quite a knack for taking care of her opponents, even against type disadvantages. Lv. 11.

Deceased
http://www.pokemonelite2000.com/pkfrlg019.pngRatatoskr never got a moment to shine. He handled himself really well in the beginning, but couldn't brace himself enough for a pidgey's critical tackle. Farewell. Lv. 3 - 8.

I think I'll join in on my Fire Red game. Love all of your challenges so far! :3 I think I'm going to start with a Pokemon I pretty much never use... Squirtle.

1. If a Pokemon faints, it's dead. Graveyard box in the PC.
2. Can only catch the first Pokemon on each route or zone.
2a. If dupes, I have 3 chances to find a different Pokemon. If I don't, too bad.
2b. Shiny clause. I can catch it if I find a shiny.
3. A black out/white out is "game over," even if there are Pokémon left in the PC.
4. No items used in battles unless the opponent uses an item.
5. No legendaries.

But first, I must grab a potion! Why "must" I? Because it's just insanity to run off into a Nuzlocke without one. Even this early into the game.

And now onto the Pokemon. Of course, Green is there to complain about not getting first dibs, but that's just fine with me. What crazy world would it be if the rival randomly picked a starter first?

Hydro, Male, Level 5
Careful nature Squirtle

And now onto the crazy fun rival battle times! Nothing of importance happened. Bulbasaur and Squirtle had a speed tie, but Squirtle dropped a critical hit on his last move and took Bulbasaur down. With that, I took my leave and headed up to Viridian City and got another free potion along the way. Though, I returned to Pallet Town soon enough to complete the delivery quest. Unfortunately, I found a Pidgey along the way, so I won't be able to catch a new Pokemon on Route 1.

Now to head over to Route 22 where I find... a Mankey! While weakening it, it gets off four Leers on Hydro, making me extremely nervous, but after two Pokeballs, I manage to catch it.

Fu, Male, Level 4
Jolly nature Mankey

I decide to head up north of Viridian City and try to add a bit more to my team before I settle down for some grinding. Good old Route 2 provides me with a Rattata and the Viridian Forest gives me a Weedle. Of course a Weedle! Hydro gets poisoned while fighting it. :/ Just to taunt me, on my way out to get to the Pokemon Center, a Pikachu shows up. -.- At least I got all of those free Potions. I get back to Viridian City (cause I didn't get an antidote, of course...) to heal Hydro.

Squeaks, Male, Level 4
Relaxed nature Rattata

Bugger, Female, Level 5
Quirky nature Weedle

And now, I train...

Once I saw this thread I knew I had to join in. I'm using Fire Red as well

Since it's my first Nuzlocke run, my rules are a little less strict (first two rules copied from Skye)

1. If a Pokemon faints, it's dead. Graveyard box in the PC
2. Can only catch the first Pokemon on each route or zone (this includes fishing)
2a. If I encounter a dupe, I have 1 chance to capture a different Pokemon
3. When all of my Pokemon faint, game over

First Session

Being an old hand at the game, I make my way up to the grass at the Pallet Town border and am instantly ambushed and chided by that old fart, Oak. He leads me back to the lab where I meet Gary, who I already want to slap. Oak talks about how we need Pokemon to become a trainer, etc. etc. and forces me to choose one of the three Pokeballs before me. I decide to go with one of my favorite Pokemon lines and select Charmander

:004:
Drake (m), Lv. 5

I decide to name him Drake and then Gary makes his choice. I turn to leave but Gary insists we have a battle. Surprise, surprise, he releases a Squirtle, which is supposedly strong against your Pokemon. Like a boss though, I easily defeat him and he runs off like the prick he is.

I head out and up to Viridian City. I encounter a few Pokemon along the way but since I don't have any Pokeballs, I can't catch any. Also, since I encountered Pokemon along Route 1, I wasn't allowed to catch any in the future.

I get to the city, pick up the parcel, get back to Oak, get my Pokedex, get the town map, withdrew a Potion from my computer, and then finally headed out of town. I train up Drake for a bit and decide to head over to Route 2. The first Pokemon I encounter is a Pidgey. Drake makes easy work of her and is captured.

:016:
Venus (f), Lv. 3

I head back down to Rt.22 in hopes of capturing a Mankey but the god of Pokemon decides to screw me over and gives me a Lv.3 Rattata. I capture him but I neglect to give him a nickname so I restart my game and decide to capture the same level and gender Rattata. After a while of no luck, I make the decision of just letting him go forever and resolve to not keep Pokemon if I don't name them and not capture any Pokemon in the area in the future.

I train Venus for a bit before I go up to Viridian Forest. While there, I capture a Lv.2 Caterpie (fuck) and Venus almost dies to a Weedle. Thank the fuck god I stocked up on Potions and Antidotes

:010:
Isis (f), Lv. 2

Since Isis is so fucking weak, I pretty much have to switch her out mid-battle so she can gain any experience. I do this for a little while before heading back down to Rt.22 and battling Gary. I start the battle with Isis but switch her out with Venus and have her pound on Gary's Pidgey. When his fail-bird passes out, I switch to Drake and have him beat on his Squirtle while it sits there and uses Tail Whip like a loser. I win handily and go about my merry way.

After a time, Isis gets up to level 5 and during her random battles, encounters a Rattata. Things go swimmingly but then Rattata uses a Tackle....and it crits. The poor Caterpie didn't stand a chance and faints. Blood rushes into my head and all I can think about is revenge so I release Drake and order him to burn the bastard alive with Ember. The rat is killed with no pity in my eyes but it won't bring back Isis. With a sigh, I leave her in storage to a life of neglect and continue on my journey.

I head back into Viridian Forest and level my Pokemon up some more through trainer battles and wild encounters. They blow through their foes easily but the victories seem more hollow without having Isis around.

:004:
Drake Lv. 12 (m)
Lonely nature, Blaze ability

:016:
Venus Lv. 11 (f)
Brave nature, Keen Eye ability

Well, I hate to double post but I just lost the Nuzlocke challenge ><

14 Charmander died to Brock's Onix and I only had my 13 Pidgey left so that wasn't going to work out. My lack of patience did me in

Oh well, I'll continue to play with the restrictions but yeah, I failed

I started a Nuzlocke challenge on my Leaf Green Game, and i'm using the following rules:

* If a pokemon faints, it is dead. YOu must either release or permanently box it.
* You can only catch the first pokemon you see in a route.
* If it's a duplicate, you have three chances to catch another before you must move on.
* Shiny pokemon or exempt.
* You must nickname all the pokemon.

I started out by withdrawing a potion from the PC before going downstairs to learn that Professor Oak had been searching for me. Then after a wild goose chase in which i never found the professor, i headed for Route 1. Before i could even take a step, Oak finally showed up and drug me back to the lab where Red was waiting.

I was allowed first choice at choosing a pokemon so i decided on Charmander, who turned to be a calm female which i nicknamed Calleigh. Naturally, Red decided on Squirtle and challenged me to a battle. Calleigh won by repeatedly scratching him, and when i say him i meant the squirtle. Calleigh grew to L.6 when it was over.

After making a stop by home, where Mom healed us up, we ventured out into Route 1 where we were immediately assaulted by a pidgey. Calleigh easily took care of her. After several battles against rattatas and pidgeys, we arrived in Viridian City where the first stop was to the Pokecenter in order to heal Calleigh who had grown to L.8. After healing, we stopped by the Pokemart where we were conned into delivering a package to Oak.

We quickly went back to Pallet Town to deliver the parcel and afterwards, I received the pokedex and pokeballs from Oak. Then I collected a Town Map form Red's sister and healed once more before returning to Viridian City along with Calleigh who had grown to L.9.

After healing i bought some Pokeballs, and potions before venturing into Route 22 where i immediately encountered and with Calleigh's help caught a Spearow who I named Hodges. Hodges was a L.3 male that was modest and had the keen eye ability.

Returnign to Viridian we healed before continuing north but was stopped by an old guy who showed us how to capture a weedle and unloaded a Teach TV on me. When that delay was over we ventured into Route 2 where we stumbled upon a rattata. With Hodges help, we easily caught the little mouse who i named Natalia. She was a L. 2 Female who was bold and had run away ability O_o.

Afterwards we returned to Route 22 where we were training. Red found out where we were and challenged us with his level 9 pidgey and squirtle. After the battle i took a look at my team. Natalia was L.6, Hodges L.7, and Calleigh was L.10.

Feeling that we could handle ourselves, we ventured into viridian forest after purchasing two antidotes. We battled the bug catchers we found along the way without encountering any pokemon until we spotted the last trainer. then we were attacked by a Weedle that Natalia helped to capture getting poisoned in the process. As soon as the weedle, who we named tripp was caught i quickly gave Nat an antidote before healing Tripp with a potion and looking him over. He was a L.5 male who had the shield dust ability and was lonely. We quickly approached the last trainer and with Hodge's help, Tripp grew to L.6. Afterwards, we left Viridian Forest behind venturing out into the far part of route two and headed into Pewter where I healed everyone up and bought what potions i could afford before returning to Route 2 for a grinding session. It was briefly stopped by Tripp's first evolution which came after he beat a L. 3 pidgey and grew to l.7 and evolved into a Kakuna. Afterwards the grinding session resumed until once more it was paused due to Tripp. He beat a L.3 rattata and evolved into a beedrill that had swarm. Grinding resumed until everyone was L.13 except for Calleigh who i trained until she was L.16 and had evolved.

Afterwards we made a stop at the pokecanter and armed with only one potion decided to attempt to challenge Brock. Armed with Calleigh in the lead we made our way to the gym. But before we could get to him we were challenged by a camper. Calleigh knocked out the geodude but i switched her out with natalia to battle the sandshrew who was good enough to get Natalia into the red after lowering her accuracy. Quickly switching her with Hodges who readily tore into the sandshrew. After checking over my team and putting Natalia into last place hoping she wouldn't have to see anymore battles until i could heal her, I approached Brock.

Calleigh's tail burned brightly as we easily brought down the geodud. Then, he sent out Onix. We were going good with metal claw until he tackled and then used rock tomb. Calleigh was in the yellow so i used my only potion and then she resumed metal clawing the onyx and eventually broguht him down.

After getting the Boulder Badge and the Rock Tomb TM we returned to the Pokecenter where i healed and saved the game.

In all the excitement, I forgot to even go over--

THE RULES

If a pokémon faints (either in battle or otherwise), it is considered dead and must be permanently boxed.
Catch only the first pokémon you come across in the area.

If you come across something you already have in your party, you are granted two more chances to catch something.

Nickname everything! If you fail to nickname a pokémon, you must release it and your capture for that area becomes forfeit.
Gift pokémon may be used, but they count as the capture for that particular area.
Every zone in the Safari Zone counts as a separate area.

GREY'S JOURNEY
Day TWO

The morning sun rose steadily overhead, and I anxiously hopped out of my cot, eager to prove myself to the world. Viridian City was a cornucopia of activity, but I didn't want any part of it if I couldn't earn the Earth Badge.

I packed up my belongings, folded up my cot, and made my way towards the forest. I was expecting to catch a young bug-type to help round out my beginning team, but what I came across was much more interesting--

"Oh crap!," I shouted, almost as if I was trying to scare him away. He was only level 3, which meant that Levi wouldn't have any difficulty at all against him. My tiny turtle stepped up to the plate, and unleashed a swift shot of water to crash against mouse, nearly halving his health. The pikachu retaliated with a nice growl, but that didn't matter once I tossed the poké ball.

The ball connected, and sealed him inside nicely before shaking three times... and locking in place. "Haha!," I said, "gotcha!"

THOR
M Pikachu (Lv. 3)
@Static
Relaxed

Perhaps my luck wasn't so bad after all! For the next few hours, we went around Viridian Forest tackling bug pokémon and trainers, leveling up quite nicely. Thor made it all the way to 9, learning a few new moves in the process (Tail Whip and Thunder Wave). I wasn't too worried about Thor's growth, though, because Levi would be the only one taking on Brock. After finally defeating the last bug catcher and his unorthodox Lv. 9 weedle, we left the forest and headed towards Pewter.

With confidence, we tackled the gym's apprentice and challenged Brock, who's closed stare was nothing short of intimidating. We released our pokémon at the same time, with his geodude and my pikachu... wait, pikachu!? Crap, I forgot he was still at the top of the lineup!

I swiftly recalled Thor just in time for Levi to be hit by Geodude's tackle. The damage was minimal though, so I worried none. Levi ended Geoduce with one swift water gun!

Brock's wild smirk continued as he summoned his titan rock snake -- Onix. I was a little worried, but not enough to turn-tail. Levi did what she did best, and ended the leviathan with one more water gun. And just like that, the battle was over.

Brock handed me the Boulder Badge, as well as a TM I had no plan on using.

Team

I'll start a Nuzlocke challenge on Emerald
I'll be following the original rules
1. If a Pokemon Faints its dead.
2. You can only catch the first pokemon in each area.

Chapter 1: The Beginning

*Bump* *Bump *Screech*

The door creaked open in our moving van and I jumped out into the fresh air. My Mom came outside and brought me back inside. I walked over to my clock and set the time and grabbed a potion out of my PC. After the show my Mom sent me over to the neighbor's house that was owned by Professor Birch.

I left my neighbors house after meeting May and went to go look for Professor Birch I went to look on Route 1. I found Professor Birch struggling with a Zigzagoon. I looked over the pokemon and threw out a Treeko. After a few Pounds I had won the battle and heard the ribs of the poor Zigzagoon crack. After I won we went back to the lab and he gave me the Treeko which I named Leaf.

After catching Soak I ran back to the Pokemon Center and healed up. Then I started to run over to Petalburg Gym but got caught in a Trainer battle. The trainer sent out a Poochyena who I fought with Leaf and after a few attacks was able to kill it. He gave me his money and I left him alone to cry at his loss. I was inspired by this thread a bit ago and had decided upon doing the Nuzlocke challenge. I found a website (playr.org) where I could play a retro game online and, since I have time to kill before starting my thesis in a few days, I decided to see how far I could go before I lose interest.

I'm actually doing okay so far, despite having had mad pokemon croak on me LOL. I also have been fiddling about the rules a bit in that I used Headbutt and the fishing rods in cities. I'm finally in Blackthorn City and I'm a bit nervous about the dragons. I've also had a Pokemon (a Level 10 Krabby named "Sanser", Superjail reference) with Cut, Strength, Surf and Whirlpool. After a close call with the fucking suicune and almost losing my HM slave to an Aipom, What my team now consists of is:

1. Venonat (F) "Imogen", Level 32: Stun Spore, Supersonic, Confusion, Swift.
2. Quagsire (M) "Quagmire", Level 32: Surf, Headbutt, Amnesia, Dig
3. Gastly (F) "Mimet", Level 31: Shadow Ball, Mean Look, Hypnosis, Confuse Ray
4. Meganium (M) "Clamhat", Level 33: Synthesis, Razor Leaf, Body Slam, Reflect
5. Noctowl (M) "Plutoh", Level 32: Fly, Peck, Hypnosis, Reflect
6. Graveler (F) "Quahog", Level 33: Rollout, Magnitude, Rock Smash, Selfdestruct (haven't used that yet!! LOL I want that occasion to be epic)

I'm really banking on getting Dream Eater on Mimet before evolving it, and it sucks that with the friggin flash game I can't trade to evolve Mimet or Quahog. I'm also trying to get Psybeam on Imogen before it evolves! I had to rely heavily on Mimet with Team Rocket because a lot of their Pokemon know Explosion/Selfdestruct, and Mimet is immune to that. Quagmire has been very helpful for this challenge.

I had really hoped to catch a Jynx before doing battle with Clair, but I encountered a Swinub instead and I'm considering swapping out Plutoh for a little while and leveling up Ms. Swinub. I also considered a journey to the Whirl Islands in hopes of capturing a Seel and evolving it to Dewgong. I think Dewgong could probably tank at Clair's dungeon o' doom, but I also think I really need an Electric-type something or other in order to handle the Gyarados, since only Quahog has a super-effective move.
