I don't mind Gary. He can be an interesting character sometimes, especially with his alternate viewpoint on Training. He is fairly good as 'character conflict' characters go. However, I am told that his dub voice is as painful as nails on a blackboard. :D

There are almost no characters in Pokemon I dislike (the narrator being one of them). Gary is a cool trainer and quite skilled (he has a Houndoom with Counter for one), and I like how he matured through the series. Plus his Umbreon is awesome.

Gary is really fine trainer^^ He was very cheeky, little kid in 1st season, but now he is much more adult.
He is very good pkmn trainer, because his Eevee was much stronger (Gary probably caught him in 2nd season) than Ash`s Pikachu! And his Umbreon is coool!!! What a pity, that he hasn`t Espeon.
I hope, that we will see Gary again^^
I like Ash and Gary. Both are great!!!

Nope. That's Hazuki, the trainer Ash lost to in the Johto league.

I like Gary; once a cocky trainer, he's now a lot more mature and has a great line up of Pokemon, including Umbreon, Magmar, Skarmory (even though i don't think that is in his team), Scizor, Golem and Arcanine.

I've always contested this. Certainly Eevee was just as strong or nearly as strong but I think the battle could have easily gone either way. If another second had passed and Pikachu had managed to unleash that Thunder attack it would most likely have won. Unfortunately for it Eevee managed to hit it with Skull Bash, which not only damaged Pikachu outright but also caused it's Thunder attack to come back on itself, resulting in what must have been a Critical Hit several times over, thus why it was beaten so quickly.

He just might. Gary has hundreds of Pokemon so its easy to speculate, although the amount of time and care it takes to get an Espeon would make it unlikely.

But he's had the time to raise an Umbreon, so why not an Espeon as well? He probly had lots of time to train pokemon during the Orange Islands.

There is no technical reason why not, but there is a conceptual reason why not. Umbreon and Espeon are usually treated as polar opposites; one night and the other day. I wouldn't be surprised if they are trying to tell us something about Gary's personality by giving him the flag-bearer of the dark-type (often called the evil-type). While he isn't a bad guy, Gary is more results-oriented and generally colder than Ash when it comes to fights and the possibility of his Pokémon being injured. I can't imagine a Trainer having both an Umbreon and an Espeon unless they are established as an Eevee-loution specialist. It would send contradictory signals about them.

I've always thought that if Umbreon has a sister who is an Espeon, she should be the Pokémon friend of Gary's sister May. :D That would fit with her personalty, which in both game and manga is much warmer than Gary's (she owns a Pokémon grooming salon in Pallet Town).

Your post makes a lot of sense. But it actually reminds me of something.

Where the heck is May in the anime? There isn't any sign of her at all.

When do we find Umbreon battle again? Against Ash, I mean.

As far as we know she does not exists in the anime's world. But then again we've never seen Gary's house.

***SPOILERS***

We have yet to see Gary's Umbreon battle again against anyone. Gary's next appearance is in a Pokemon race and the only Pokemon we see him bring out is Arcanine. In the League Battle against Ash, Gary uses six Pokemon including his Starter, but Umbreon is not among them. Ash also does not use Pikachu in that battle so perhaps both he and Gary simply wanted to use Pokemon that the other had not become familiar with in terms of battling style.

Gary's Umbreon battles Alakazam in the beginning of Power Play. But Alakazam was owned by a random trainer. Perhaps you meant it hasn't battled a main character?

I do not like him. However, the same can't be said for the cheerleaders who used to hang with him.

I don't like Shigeru, I LOVE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!! ^_^ I think he's way cooler than Ash, specially cuz he's not the goody goody type of guy. Plus, he's a great Pokemon trainer, and I wish he could show up more often in the series, which I don't think is going to happen, anyway... u.u

Actually I was referring to his question about Umbreon participating in future battles. Sorry for being unclear.

I doubt Umbreon'll reappear. Especially to battle Pikachu. Some chapters are always left unfinished.

I would love to see it in action again.

I like Gary a little better now that he is Ash's friend rather than his rival, and that he is acting more adult by becoming a Pokemon researcher instead of competing with Ash all the time. I think Umbreon will make a reappearence, but it won't be to battle Pikachu! He'll most likely be in the background when Ash talks to Gary, Tracey, or Prof. Oak.
