how/when are the trees/plants that you plant supposed to grow?

Oh boy, lol. I you planted them on the ***, I don't think you'll be seeing them. Ever. Time has to pass for things to grow I think.

well i mean i cant exactly read japanese, and it let me water them, so i am assuming that they grow sometime.....DONT THEY?

I think they grow after a day or so. If you're playing on a ROM, this is another little feature that won't work due to a lack of the clock chip.

Interestingly, this is the reverse of the situation in GSC - the screwed up timing on those ROMs meant that you could pick a berry anytime the day changed. My guess is that's why they changed it, as well as giving the player something else interesting to do and allowing them to cultivate the particular fruits they might want more of.
