I think he caught Shining Noctowl before Totodile.

No, he got totodile then shiny noctowl because they switched the two episodes around and in the noctowl one they show totodile.

Yeah, Ash caught his hyper-active Totodile three episodes before he caught his anti-social Shiny Noctowl. As Sygma stated, Totodile does indeed make an appearence in the episode where Ash catches his Noctowl.
