Well the reason this poll, prolly more of a 'directly after New Year' kinda thing, was so late in the making is that I was convinced that somebody must have thought to have done this already, but after skimming through the first few pages of PCG I realise they haven't, which is great, coz it means I get to use it and hence get rid of that feeling that I haven't come up with any dumb poll ideas lately. :) The questions relate to the best musical events of last year, and go...

1. Album of 2003?
2. Band of 2003?
3. Male artist of 2003?
4. Female artist of 2003?
5. (optional) Any other music-related events in 2003 you feel are worth mentioning?

As ever, explaining WHY you choose what you choose would be nice. And as for my own answers...

1. This is a toughie, it's prolly gonna be AFI's 'Sing the Sorrows' album, ever since 'Black Sails in the Sunset' they constantly eclipse everything else (maybe it's just the gothy-punky boy in me saying this, their blend of the two genres just appeals to me!). Although points go to 'Absolution' by Muse and 'Blackout' by the Dropkick Murphys, they both just miss out IMO.
2. Hmm, I suppose this will have to go to The Darkness for being so bloody cheesy that they somehow or other managed to become ultra-popular without resorting to being a boy band! :) 'Twas a sin that they were kept off the Xmas No.1 spot by a really slowed-down dirge-like remake of a Tears For Fears song...
3. My vote goes to Matt Bellamy from Muse for releasing what could be their finest album to date, albeit one that contains 'Our Time Is Running Out', the cause of many 'OMG I've got this stuck in my head AGAIN?????' moments for me.
4. Whatever the name is of the woman from Evanescence, it's nice to see a band producing such ACTUAL gothic tunes such as 'My Immortal' and not languish in obscurity forever. :)
5. Gogogo the rise in fame of Hope of the States, but only on the condition that their bloody drummer gives us a free promo album once he's finished with his RSI... :o It's nice to see someone I indirectly know of actually get somewhere. :)

1. 'False Smiles' by Amy Studt. I'm biased. She's my favourite artist at the minute, but that's only because I love her music. Out of all the albums I bought in 2003, hers was my favourite. It's pop but not cheesey pop, and her album ranges from soft vocal songs to the more up-tempo, pop with a bit of light rock. So that gets my vote.

PS: Any UK Chart watchers may remember her hits 'Under The Thumb' and 'Misfit' and her new single, 'All I Wanna Do' is out today do BUY IT NOW PLEASE!

2. Band of 2003. I'm not really into bands that much but I agree that Evanescence achieved a lot. They had a #1 single and album in the UK and 2 other hit singles as well. One of the few rock groups I'd attempt to listen to actually. That girl has a good voice.

3. Don't really like many male artists...but by looking at the music scene this year, Sean Paul has achieved the most and IMO deserves it. He collaborated with Beyoncé, Blu Cantrell, Sasha and all his singles and album have done well.

4. Amy Studt, of course! - see above :)

5. The one that stands out is Black Eyed Peas getting 6 weeks at #1. Last person to do that was Cher in 1998 with 'Believe' and she got 5 weeks. It stands out because it began to annoy me after week 4. Hehe...

2. black eyed peas for where is the love and Evanescence for bring me to life.

3. not really sure....i suppose 50 cent was really huge.

1. Album of 2003?
I would definately say Jay Z's Black Album. But I suppose that's being a bit biased since I just got it last month and just been listening to it like crazy. But yeah... Black Album for me. It's one of those CDs where I can play the whole thing through and not skip any songs.

2. Band of 2003?
*scratches out 'band' and puts 'rap/r&b group' in her case* xD Hm. That would have to be Lil Jon and the Eastside Boyz. They didn't release many singles this year, but they deserve it just for "Get Low". Best party song evar. So many memories from dancing to this song... heh. :o

3. Male artist of 2003?
I'd say 50 Cent. I'm not some crazy fan like my brother is, but that guy has been everywhere all year. I remember when "In Da Club" jumped off December 2002, and the rest was history. He's also from my area, so yay 50.

4. Female artist of 2003?
Beyonce of course. Another artist who was everywhere all year. Not a big fan of her either, but she does have a few songs I like.

5. (optional) Any other music-related events in 2003 you feel are worth mentioning?
Um. *shrug* Can't think of anything really big that happened that I already mentioned, so yeah.

1: a perfect circle - thirteenth step; manson - grotesque

2:bands dont get rated as 'best' in one year, it takes ages to get a status like that, unless you work for the grammy's or mtv :P

3: ozzy osbourne - there are many other art forms apart from music (his pics are cool)

4: as above (ozzy isnt a chik, u know what i mean)

5: the controversy metallica got for releasing st anger. yes very debatable indeed

1. Album of 2003?
'Permission To Land' by The Darkness was good, because they're so cheesy and it made me laugh out loud when I heard some of the ridiculous lyrics. I love 'Fallen' by Evanescence as well... Just because it's a good album that's easy to listen to.

2. Band of 2003?
The Darkness, because the cheesiness of it all. Their videos are great, too. XD

3. Male artist of 2003?
Sean Paul was very big, and although I don't like him, his mumbly voice caused many laughs with me and my best friend.

4. Female artist of 2003?
Amy Lee I suppose (the lead singer of Evanescence). A very powerful and beautiful voice, and the songs are really nice.

5. (optional) Any other music-related events in 2003 you feel are worth mentioning?
The crappiness of St Anger, by Metallica was surprising, but other than that I can't think of anything.

1. Linkin Park's Meteora or Evanescence's Fallen...it's a toughie to choose. Personally, I think both are pretty good..but it's so hard to choose.

2. Evanescence, for the at least sheer gothicness which Slipknot and Marilyn Manson cannot match up to. The power of they put into the music is great...variations between piano and string.

3. Um...Would you count the vocalists out of bands..? If so, probably Chester Benningto(lead vocalist for Linkin Park)...his voice is purely just great. It isn't just shouting...if you wish to know what I mean, just listen to "Easier to Run", "Numb", "From the Inside", and "Breaking the Habit" from Meteora.

4. Amy Lee, Evanescence's vocalist. Her voice is powerful, and possibly it can be because she at least isn't preppy and diva-like...yet I idolize her mostly for her singing.

5. Well..."Numb" by Linkin Park did good for awhile, I'm not sure about it now and days, though. The funniest was probably that when watching Fox News one night, it was clear that Eminem is possibly in trouble for mentioning something about wishing that the president was dead...xD

1. Speakerboxx/The Love Below. Outkast was great this year.

2. I have NO idea. Does Maroon 5 count?

3. 50 Cent! I still love to bounce to "In Da Club".

4. Missy Elliot. She rocks! Rockin' lyrics, rockin rhythm, and rockin' wardrobe.

5. Ruben Studdard is going great this year. His voice blows Luther Vandross out of the water.
