View Full Version : New moves in FR/LG :O

Yeah, I know there's a fr/lg topic but this is fairly important unto itself.

Anyway, Fire Red/Leaf Green have come up with a way of having our cake and eating it too: We have RS TMs, hold items, AND RBY TMs :O Namely, move tutor moves. The following are known(reprinted and edited from http://cgi.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.asp?board=918915&topic=12421912):

TM 01 - Mega Punch - Move Tutor on Route 4
TM 03 - Swords Dance - Move Tutor on Island 7
TM 05 - Mega Kick - Move Tutor on Route 4
TM 08 - Body Slam - Move Tutor on Island 4
TM 10 - Double-Edge - Move Tutor on Victory Road
TM 18 - Counter - Move Tutor in Celadon City
TM 19 - Seismic Toss - Move Tutor in Pewter Museum
TM 31 - Mimic - Move Tutor in Saffron City
TM 35 - Metronome - Move Tutor in Cinnabar Island
TM 41 - Softboiled - Move Tutor in Celadon City
TM 42 - Dream Eater - Move Tutor in Viridian City
TM 45 - Thunder Wave - Move Tutor in Saffron City
TM 47 - Explosion - Move Tutor on Island 1
TM 48 - Rock Slide - Move Tutor in Rock Tunnel
TM 50 - Substitute - Move Tutor in Fuchsia City

Now, some of these, namely Swords Dance, Explosion, Substitute, and Thunder Wave, are going to have a spectacular effect on the metagame. Also notable are the moveset additions. The more notable include Megahorn Nidoking, Superpower Nidoqueen, Megahorn Seaking, Nightmare Gengar, Nightmare Hypno, and so on.

The basic point here is, this has radically changed our ideas about 386. After doing some testing, we discovered that Heracross and Ursaring learn Swords Dance(Sneasel and Gligar do too, which makes them useful in a UU setting). The questions:

1) Will these new movesets create UNSTOPPABLE JUGGERNAUTS OF DOOM!!!1111?

2) What effects do you predict on the metagame?

3) Will this influence your desire to buy Fire Red/Leaf Green? Why/not?

4) Will this influence your desire to play 386 over 200, or vice versa? Why/not?

5) Any particular reasonable-sounding move tutor/pokemon you'd like to check out? #rsbot is working on a preliminary list, but don't expect much in the near future :P Particularly since the VBA codes for RS pokemon are screwed.

I can't wait to catch a Snorlax and teach it Explosion.

By the way, I have news on the Tutor who teaches Blast Burn, Frenzy Plant, and Hydro Cannon.

This Tutor is indeed real. However, he will teach this move only to ONE specific pokemon - your starter. And the move he teaches depends on the nature of your starter. (If you chose Bulbasaur, Frenzy Plant, Squirtle gets Hydro Cannon, Charmander gets Blast Burn.)

No other pokemon can learn the moves. You cannot bring him a Magmar (for instance) and have him teach it Blast Burn.

And you can't fool him - if you trade a starter pokemon from another game, it can't learn it either.

But cheer up - it IS a good addition to your true starter's arsenal.

Unfortunately, your starter isn't the best choice to teach it to:

- If it's your original starter, that means no bred moves.

- Also, in order to get proper EVs, you'll have to ditch your starter after the first battle with Gary and capture another Pokémon to work with early on. In-game trainers mess up effort points. =/

But if you only want to play the game for fun, then stuff like that doesn't really matter^_^ Though it's annoying about it only being your starter that can get the move, for some reason, I really like the idea of a Meganium using Frenzy Plant o_O Probably because I was bored and was figuring out how Meggy'd use the attack, but that's the beside the point xD

Still, the most important thing is the bit concerning Sneasel xD Swords Dance should be fun to play with.

Since when does lax learn explosion?

Misty

snorlax can't explode. it learns selfdestruct in rby, which has no known tutors.

There are lots of move tutors - they teach moves like Couter, Metronome, and Softboiled.

One will teach one of your Pokemon Explosion. I'm hoping it can teach it to Snorlax.

Why would anyone want to learn Hydro Cannon. Frenzy Plant, and Blast Burn? Are they different from the "Elemental Hyper Beam" description we had earlier?

And what about Volt Tackle (the electric Double Edge)? Is there a tutor for this (or an unseen yellow version remake on the horizon)?

That's what I was wondering. Also, what about Icicle Spear?

How to obtain Volt Tackle is currently unknown.

However, in the new games Shellder now learns Icicle Spear. Not that it's a very useful move anyway...

It's going to be a whole different game when these are released in the states. It seems like every Pokemon will be usable in some way now.
