i didnt want to try this until i knew it was safe. but could i trade between an english ruby and a import leafgreen?

Yes, you can trade between different language versions of Fire Red/Leaf Green and Ruby/Sapphire. This wasn't possible in the older games, (Red/Blue/Yellow and Gold/Silver/Crystal) but it is now!! :)
