Okay, I just saw a banner ad on TPM that said, "Herpes. Is it causing your genital irritation?"

That got me thinking about the nature of ads on the internet. Obviously pop-up ads are annoying, but that's been discussed before. But what about the content of ads? I've seen some on supposedly kid-friendly sites that are outrageous. Indeed, TPM is supposed to be a place where kids can be, but it seems like ads like this one just prove that theory wrong.

So what are your opinions on online advertisements? Should they be more regulated, should they be restricted at all, etc. What do you think?

Well, many ad programs that I have used on various websites that I have worked on allow you to customize the types of ads displayed so that only certain categories or age specific ads will be shown to visitors. I find that to be one of the best ways of controlling what type of ads are seen on your website.

What if the kids have herpes? Perhaps this ad is a good way to educate them about the dangers of herpes, or to offer them assistance. But I do agree that popups need to be G-rated unless you're on an obviously pornographic site. I've gone to a couple flash animation sites, and porn popups were coming up. Nearly got me grounded, and I prefer no to be grounded. Not to mention the fact, I only want to see porn when I want to see porn. And the popups aren't making me want their porn.

That doesn't sound pornographic to me. You can get herpes through ways other than sex, you know. The genitals are just another body part, and you wouldn't get offended if it was, say, something for dry skin on the elbows, right?

Now, if it *showed* something, or we started getting those ads with the women in *really* low-cut bikinis, or those 'dating' ads, that would be another matter.

I know what mr_pikachu means, i think. On TPM a lot of members complain if any talk about this nature is brought up.

But then we have it as an advert?

I thought TPM would of had some type of filter to block this out, but I guess we cant know for sure.

If STD's are reasonable content for the visitors of this site, why was I banned for posting a poll about STD's?

back before i started using phoenix/firebird/firefox, the ads online weren't that bad. before i started using adblock a while back, i saw some pretty weird ones, like the herpes one mentioned, viagra, etc. now that i use firefox + adblock, i never see an ad or popup ever.

Ideas and information is a great thing. I believe most people that come here are more mature than to make such a fuss because of an ad about herpes. Sex education is very important, and for many people to say abstain from sex. Well sorry but that is too easy. Bad sex education like that is what is wrong in society.

Bah. Ads are ads. Some will be intrusive, and some will be obtrusive. Most I don't really notice online. I don't really go on the Internet to buy stuff (or be persuaded into buying things), so it doesn't really bother me. What bothers me is spam, but most of the time it's so blatant that it's hard to actually open it.

Quite frankly, I think it's important for people to find this out, rather than OMG DON'T DO IT!!! What do you think happens when you tell kids not to do things, especially like se-to-the-x? Uh huh. They go and do it. At least this way, they know what's floating in the water before plunging in.

Well, for one thing, the ad I mentioned at the beginning was a banner ad. I don't believe there's any software that can block those.

Actually, there is. I can see if I can find it again, if you want. I don't have installed on this PC, but I think I do on my laptop.

when more people begin using mozilla firefox (plus adblock) the advertisement companies will eventually realise they're wasting their time.

they can advertise what they want, but smart people can block it. at least most regular surfers can.

lol

Trust me. You can filter anything on the Internet if (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox) you know (http://adblock.mozdev.org) how. ;)
