Self-Destruct vs. Explosion

Yeah. Explosion is more powerful (check Azure Heights for details.. run a Google search for the URL if you need it) but some things (Snorlax, Mewtwo) only learn Selfdestruct.

If you mean Normal attacks not getting STAB, I've heard them defending this to mean "Normal type attacks won't give Pokemon like Weezing STAB. We KNOW Wigglytuffs Body Slam was higher power than Raichus."

As for the choice, Explosion is much stronger. According to Azure Heights, Explosion has 340 pwr, and Self-Destruct has 260...And according to AH, Snorlax using SD is more destructive than Golem using Explosion.

Self-Destruct's BA (Basic Attack Power) is 200, while Explosion's BA is 250. However, as TMM pointed out, with STAB, both attacks deliver a devastating amount of damage.

As a serious trainer, I personally find both of these attacks useless.

On a scale of meats, I've been described as a thick juicy prime rib. I think that's reason enough alone to say the trade-off of Fainting is only really painful if a fresh Rhydon or any kind of Gengar pops out of that Pokeball before Eggy or Golem goes off.

Heheh... My team would get owned by Explosion no matter what I send out. I have nothing resistant to those attacks. Plus, Explosion on Exeggutor is the only reason people don't send Chansey out to rape it. Yeah, and I have a very annoying Chansey.

i never use either. killing off one of your own doesnt seem strategic to me. but thats just me.

STAB stands for Same Type Attack Bonus. It meets if a Pokemon uses an attack of the same type, it does 1.5 more damage than it normally would. So an electric Pokemon does more damage with a Thunderbolt than a psychic Pokemon would, even if they had identical stats. This makes Selfdestruct that much more deadly when used by something like a Snorlax, because both Snorlax and the already very powerful Selfdestruct are Normal-typed.

Anyway, I stick to my claim that Explosion on a team is important. A Snorlax is the only thing I would put Selfdestruct on... The move is basically a must on Snorlax, in my opinion. Amnesia is too slow and too risky.

3 Amnesias, a mostly paralyzed team, plenty of rest, and huge damage even not very effective from Surf sure sounds like Sweepage to me. Or are you being your usual self and can't admit to not being the best at something? Christ, no wonder Cyrus cheated for you. You'd cry if you lost Like you did to me.

This topic has drifted off topic, but here's the deal:
Normal types cannot get explosion. That's the differance.
If you can get explosion over selfdestruct, do so. If you can't, selfdestruct deals more with a STAB than explosion without one anyways.
