Berries will not grow properly. I think that's mostly it.
You must realize I haven't played all my Pokemon games through. I have seen the credits of Red, Yellow, Gold and White. But that's about it, although I do own Sapphire, Ruby, Diamond and Soul Silver too. So I decided to take up my good old Sapphire again. I wasn't in a good mental condition when I tried to play that one in the first place. Anyways. The game says to me:
The internal battery has run dry.
The game can be played.
However, clock-based events will
no longer occur.
Can you tell me what this means in practice?

X-rated since April 2012!

Berries? No big deal. But have I done something bad to the game I shouldn't do? I mean I haven't saved the game that many times. What's the likely cause of this problem?
Starting with the third generation, saving dosn't use the battery anymore, so it doesn't have anything to do with that. The only thing that would cause it is just the fact that it's old. The good news is that you can still save.

Other things to note about lacking clock-based events:
The tide in Shoal Cave will be permanently whatever suits the time your game clock is frozen at. That means no making Shell Bells.
Also, I'm not sure offhand but I suspect events that are available once per day, or once per week, will be available a maximum of once per playthrough. So characters who give you a Berry a day will only do so once, and the same for those who can give you more than one TM.
Oh, yeah, and in the postgame, don't count on ever getting Lilycove Department Store's Rooftop Sales or the Energy Guru's Half-Off Sales.

Does anyone know how this affects Eevee's evolution into Espeon/Umbreon? Is it stuck at evolving into one (my assumption) or does it not evolve into them at all?

You're probably stuck getting whichever Eeveelution the time is frozen at, meaning if the clock in your room (the only way you can tell what time it is in the game, oddly) is stuck on an AM time, you're only getting Umbreon and if it's stuck on PM, only Espeon (I know it seems backwards, but they basically used noon and midnight for determining their evolution).
......Wasn't there an issue for something like this a long time ago, though? (the Berry glitch fix or something...)
