You enter the door at the bottom of one of the longest flights of stairs you've ever seen, and a blast of hot air nearly knocks you off of your feet. If the stairway was dark and imposing, you have no idea what to call this place. An enormous cavern stretches off into the black abyss above, below, and before you; only the echoing of your footsteps gives you any idea of how expansive the gym is. Other than your footfalls, your own breath, and the unusually loud movement of air around you, it is silent, dark, and sweltering. Should you call out to whatever awaits you in the dark, or should you leave while you have the chance?


"Stand and be judged!" A powerful voice rings out in the darkness. Fire bursts to life at the sides of the gym, and you see that the source of the opressive heat is a slowly churning lava pit beneath the suspended arena floor. Massive chains, links larger than a man's skull, hold the arena in place, one chain at each corner and an additional chain on each side. The firelight dances wickedly on the uneven cavern walls, throwing shadows across the room. Only now do you notice a raised dias at the opposite end of the arena floor, draped in black silk and shadows. This must be the source of the voice, you figure, wondering what will happen next. The fire lining the arena edges flares higher suddenly as the curtains on the dias part, and a tall, slender woman steps forth. Black and blood red hair, parted into ponytails, flow down over her shoulders, framing her thin body clothed in tight vinyl pants and matching corset. Her heeled boots only add to her height, making her an imposing figure outlined in shadow and flame.

"I am Jainie, and you have entered my realm. Are you prepared for the judgement?"

My eyes narrowed as I examined my new challenger. He would be a good match, I suspected...

"Fine, two-on-two it is. Let's go, Blair!" I shouted, letting loose my first Pokemon, a Murkrow. "Hide yourself with Haze, scare your opponent with Mean Look, and get things started with a Faint Attack.

Beaming with confident, I knew that I had made and the right choice taking into account that Murkrow is a flying type and against Rock attacks which are super effective against it. Further more, Onix's ultra defence would be a deterrence against Murkrow's dark attacks.

"Slither, let's break Murkrow's rhythm with Sand Storm! After which when Murkrow is too engrossed in its Mean Look, we will use Rock Slides to pounce on her!"

Blair and Slither both stay back and attempt to change their surroundings with a Haze from Blair (-4) and a Sandstorm from Slither (-8). The arena turns into a misty, turbulent storm with sand and tiny pebbles being kicked into the air.

Flying against the winds, Blair flies straight towards Slither's face and performs a Mean Look (-9). Slither's world becomes darker and he loses some confidence, but with Blair flapping right in front of him, he uses his tail to gather some rocks and throws them at Blair with a Rock Slide, knocking her down (-20)(-8).

Blair scrambles to her feet and sees Slither preparing another Rock Slide. She disappears into the mist and sandstorm, meaning Slither has no idea where to attack. He drops the rocks and Blair appears behind Slither, bashing him with dark energy in the form of a Faint Attack (-9)(-6). As Slither falls down, Blair gets hit by a bunch of rocks blown around by the sandstorm, sending her flying (-2).

Well, while I can't get in touch with Ryan, I'm going by an official moveset list, so while there are moves that would not normally be known it is possible to teach... This battle has got some major jetlag and I'm going to try to move it along...

BTW- I use the Smogon moveset lists. If either of you want to contest this post and wait for Ryan's decision, that's fine with me...

I allowed my face to remain neutral, though I was quickly going through my options in my mind. One of those little memories that we all have stashed away in our minds struck me, though, and I saw the answer to my dilemma and couldn't help but smile. Suzumiya caught my grin and paled slightly... Apparently, he didn't see any reason for me to be amused.

"Enough playing, let's get into this. Lights, camera, action!" I shouted, and the overhead lights in the gym cut out. The faint glow of the flame troughs and the lava below was the only illumination, throwing the gym into near darkness. The chains on the wall creaked in the stillness as the gear system lowered the arena floor closer to the ominously bubbling pit beneath our feet. The temperature rose a few notches as we came eye-level to the flame troughs on either side, which had died down to mere embers by now.. The raging Sandstorm only made the light dimmer...

"Ok, Blair, use another Faint Attack, but defensively, and come at him with a Confuse Ray followed with an Icy Wind!" I shouted over the roar of wind.

"What?!" my opponent cried, objecting. I laughed. "There's a bit more to gym battles, my boy..."

Slither begins the battle by using Block and surrounding the arena with his body, not allowing Blair to escape (-8). Blair vanishes into thin air and allow Slither has set up an adequate defence, Blair reappears and uses Faint Attack on Slither (-9)(-6).

Slither shakes it off and glares at Blair, ready to pounce. Blair, however, fires a Confuse Ray, sending Slither into a state of disarray (-8). Slither tries to ignore the confusion and succeeds, roaring and leaping at Blair and crushing her under his huge weight (-8)(-7). As Slither slides off Blair, Blair looks crushed. Indeed, she has been Paralyzed.

As Blair tries to flap away, her paralysis kicks in and sets her on the spot. Slither roars and uses Rock Slide, once again overcoming his confusion, crushing her under some rocks (-15)(-8). The sandstorm picks up and hits Blair in the head with even more rocks (-2).

Slither attempts to make a high-powered ground-based sandstorm in an attempt to trap Blair. However, Blair, being a flying-type, remains unaffected and simply flies above the Sand Tomb (-7). Blair now stares the surprised Slither in the eye and hits him with an Icy Wind (-14)(-7).

As Blair has not been trapped in the Sand Tomb, Slither goes to plan B and tries some body slams. Slither charges towards Blair, who tries another Icy Wind (-11)(-7). Slither weathers the storm and crushes Blair with a Body Slam (-9)(-7).

As Slither gets up, it seems Blair has once again been stricken by Paralysis. Slither goes to attack Blair once more, but the confusion he is still suffering from kicks in and he slaps himself in the face, knocking himself over (-3). Both Pokemon are on the ground in clear pain.

Blair begins the round by flapping her wings and using Icy Wind releasing a blast of freezing air targeted at Slither's face (-11)(-7). Slither closes his eyes and is forced to the edge of the arena. He maintains his ground and throws rocks at Blair using Rock Slide (-16)(-8).

Blair recovers and once again uses Icy Wind (-11)(-7). With Slither's weight at one side of the suspended arena, the arena begins to rock and sway in the wind. Slither looks a bit uneasy but proceeds with his Rock Slide (-23)(-8).

Blair decides to use Slither's uneasiness to her advantage and aims her Icy Wind at Slither's body (-11)(-7). Slither almost falls off, but manages to regain balance and centers himself. He sees Blair has managed to fly to a far off edge of the arena but manages to scrap some rocks together and throws them at Blair. However, due to the range, only a few hit Blair (-14)(-8). However, a few is all that it takes, as Blair falls into a downward spiral and hits the arena floor, fainted.

As Slither gets up, it seems Blair has once again been stricken by Paralysis. Slither goes to attack Blair once more, but the confusion he is still suffering from kicks in and he slaps himself in the face, knocking himself over (-3). Both Pokemon are on the ground in clear pain.

Dusk shows off her deadly speed by splitting into several entities, enveloping the battlefield in her clones using Double Team (-7). However, Slither seems to care none. Instead, he glows white and then dramatically lets out a blast in a massive Explosion, destroying all of Dusk's clones and sending her flying against the cave ceiling, before falling back down onto the arena. Onix is clearly unable to continue this battle (-29)(-9)(-18). The sheer force of the blast has caused a great disturbance in the arena.

Both Pokemon poise themselves for attack. Mellow kicks things off by using Rain Dance (-9) summoning a raincloud and a downpour starts on the battlefield. This causes even more steam to come up off the surface. Meanwhile Dusk splits herself into 4 Umbreons with Double Team, 3 fake, one real (-7).

Mellow now has four problems to deal with. She takes aim at one and fires a Hydro Pump (-9). It phases through one of the clones, destroying it, but the bulk of it hits the water. The magma cools and forms rocks, which are then erupted back onto the surface. Dusk, meanwhile, has snuck behind Mellow and hits her with Faint Attack (-9)(-6).

Mellow takes aim at another clone and fires her Hydro Pump once again (-9). It hits another clone, destroying it and lands in the lava again, causing it to spit up rocks at the arena. Dusk takes advantage of this with another Faint Attack (-7)(-6).

Mellow glows and then uses Substitute to create a perfect replica of herself (-25)(-8). Dusk, on the other hand, uses Double Team once more to create 2 more clones of herself (-7).

Dusk lines up and shoots a Psychic attack at what she believes to be Mellow, but the substitute takes the brunt of the blast (-8). Suddenly, the serene song of Mellow's voice as she uses Sing (-8) echoes throughout the arena and Dusk succumbs to the sleep, meaning she is unable to keep up her double team. Her clones vanish.

Seizing the opportunity, Mellow runs towards Dusk, a glowing fist raised and smashes her up against the cave ceiling before sending her crashing down again with Dynamic Punch (-19)(-8). Despite the punishment, Dusk remains fast asleep. A shower of flaming rocks strikes the arena, shelling both Pokemon (-3)(-3).

Mellow begins by waddling over to where Dusk sleeps soundly and picks her up. She is slugging her way over to the side of the arena. However, just as she is at the precipice, Dusk's eyes suddenly jump open and, seeing the lava below her, she breaks out of Mellow's hold and scratches her back with Return, although this hits the substitute (-6).

Mellow looks at her opponent, who is still somewhat drowsy and attacks with Ice Beam, knocking back Dusk (-9)(-8). Dusk then disappears and seconds later reappears in front of Mellow and hits her substitute with Faint Attack (-6).

With Dusk at close range, Mellow fires another Ice Beam, striking Dusk again (-7)(-8). Dusk disappears again and this time shatters the substitute with Faint Attack (-6). The arena erupts rocks again, hitting both Pokemon (-3)(-3).

Dusk begins the round by hitting Mellow with a hard tackle with all of her remaining strength (-4)(-3). As Mellow is herself so weak, she topples backwards and is heading towards the edge of the pit! Her trainer, Takashi, sensing imminent danger and possible irreversible burns on his Pokemon, recalls Mellow and thereby admitting defeat.

This referee declares the gym leader the victor of this battle!
