Default Dark Sage versus Master of Paradox (Ref: Aragornbird)

That's right! Master of Paradox, if you see this, and you have an open spot, meet me here!

If he does not, this becomes an open challenge.

    Here are the rules:

    DQ Time: One week

Pokemon: Four, one out at a time.

Banned Moves: Rest, Attract, Recover Substitute, and also Toxic, Thunder Wave, Destiny Bond, Perish Song, and any moves my opponent desires to ban.

Place: I'm going to let my opponent decide the arena this time, seeing as I know how creative he is.

Additional rule: Once we get a ref, we will PM our first choice of pokemon to him. Thus, one cannot intentionally trump the other with type advantage.

So, any takers for ref? Four on four! Lots of points...

Default Re: I challenge Master of Paradox! (Ref needed)

I currently have two battles running... but I believe we are allowed either three or four, so I accept your little challenge, my comrade.

The arena... well, I was hoping for a chance to use this one...

    Castle Paradox: Front Courtyard

A ways into the castle, there is a large, flat space with an open roof. This is the Front Courtyard, a relaxation spot in the chaos that is Castle Paradox. An emerald lawn covers the ground here, and there is a small spring in the corner. Shining marble columns hold up the roofs of the covered pathways on the courtyard's edge; underneath those roofs one can see doors further into the castle.

At the center of this space is a marble square, twenty feet by twenty feet. The square is surrounded by trees, each the size of a full-grown oak and topped with a solid "cap" of leaves and small red fruits. There is about five feet of space between each tree, so there are four per side.

These trees are hostile. If a Pokemon hits one of them, the tree will bat them back onto the square. It is the ref's decision as to whether or not this deals damage. In addition, the spring in the corner contains an angry kappa (I forgot to give him his cucumber), who will throw any Pokemon landing in the spring back onto the square.

All the doors are locked and secured during battles, so no one can leave the courtyard.
Now to wait for a ref...

Well, one of my reffings ended, so I'll take up on this one. Hopefully, we can get it all finished and it won't end in a DQ.

Dark Sage vs. Master of Paradox

Two trainers entered a beautiful castle courtyard that looks like it sprung out from a storybook. One trained, nicknamed “Master of Paradox” knew this arena well, so he sent out his first Pokémon – a Staryu aptly named Light. As the starshape landed in front of its trainer, his opponent released his female Ludicolo, Lily!

Heh... a trademark opening for you, eh, my comrade? Let's see how my newest party member functions today.

Light, begin this battle by establishing a Light Screen. Once that's in place, pelt the dancing pineapple-thing with a Swift attack, and then give it a dose of Flash.

Lily, use Brick Break to smash that Light Screen.

Then, hit it with Razor Leaf.

Then just close your eyes and avoid the Flash.

A nimble Staryu faced off against a dancing Ludicolo in what was sure to be a long, but intense battle. Light moved first and created a bright shield in front of it to protect against any potential Grass attacks. But Lily moved forward, her hands open. Upon reaching the barrier, she thrust her hands forward and shattered the Light Screen into hundreds of glistening pieces. These same hands smacked the Staryu in the core and knocked it back.

Feeling somewhat dismayed, the starfish fired off several yellow stars that dealt a decent amount of damage. Lily retaliated with a more powerful Razor Leaf, which slashed the Staryu a bit.

Suddenly, Light lived up to its namesake as its gem glowed brightly and a Flash attacked quickly erupted. But all this was for nothing as Lily stood motionless, her eyes closed and a slight smirk on her bill.

Then, close in for a Mega Punch.

    Follow with Secret Power

Hmmm... My dear Light, we're in a spot of trouble, but I think this strategy can muck up some of Lily's plans. Listen carefully.

Start with a Rapid Spin to knock away those accursed Razor Leaves. Maybe if we get close enough we can cut into Lily, too. When she goes for the Mega Punch, Harden and let her crack her knuckles on you. For the last move, fling her across the arena with Psychic - that should mess with her aim, if nothing else.

The jolly Ludicolo danced in place while flinging a flurry of leaves toward the Staryu. But Light was ready this time and quickly deflected the leaves by spinning around and around. Knocking the leaves away, Light made contact with Lily and scratched her up a bit for minor damage.

Lily took a more serious stance and made a fist with her right hand. The fist started to glow white, but so did the Staryu. When she brought her fist down onto her opponent, she cringed in pain. It was like hitting a brick wall! Light still took the brunt of the attack, but the damage was reduced and it received temporary protection from physical moves.

While Lily was soothing her aching knuckles, she was surrounded by a blue glow and suddenly lifted off the ground. Light concentrated its psychic powers and shot the Ludicolo backwards into the mass of trees in the center of the arena. One of the trees got angry and knocked Lily back with a branch, dealing light damage. The Mexican pineapple duck frowned and fired a beam of Normal energy, getting a direct hit on her opponent.

I am beginning to develop a hatred of duck/pineapple/Spanish hat dancer hybrids. Light, we are going to defeat that dancing freak at all costs!

Secret Power worked for her, so let's start the turn by doing it ourselves - aim for the beak. Give Lily a Stretch Armstrong experience with a good Psychic burst, and then hit her with a Tackle on the rebound.

Lily, use Protect to avoid the Secret Power. That's the last thing you need.

Then use Fake Out to try to mess up its concentration.

Finally, when it comes at you for a Tackle, use a Body Slam!

Light’s central core glowed white as a beam of energy fired out from it. The beam seemed to strike a transparent wall in front of the Ludicolo as it got deflected. When the shield faded away, Lily danced happily for avoiding the damage.

The Staryu was feeling rather pissed off and decided to torture its opponent with a Psychic attack. But Lily had rushed in front of the Staryu so suddenly that it seemed she teleported there. She hit Light with a quick smack that knocked it back a few inches and broke its concentration.

Light leapt up and spun around rapidly, slamming into the Ludicolo’s chest. Lily retaliated with an even more powerful slam, using the entire weight of her body to squish the Staryu into the floor. She stayed in that position for a few seconds before getting back up. Light staggered to its feet, a bit dazed, but at least it wasn’t paralyzed.

Light, I know it looks bad at the moment, but every strategy leaves holes that can be exploited.

For example, when Lily uses Uproar, her mouth will be open pretty wide. Freeze her tonsils with a good Ice Beam directly into her mouth. Minimize yourself so that the Secret Power shoots right past you, and then grab her with Psychic and aim her Ice Beam right at her feet.

Ice Beam (at the mouth) - Minimize - Psychic (bend head towards feet)

Having a momentary edge over her opponent, Lily danced around once more while yelling her name, “Ludicolo!” in a deafening volume. If Light had a face, it would be cringing right now. But the Staryu endured the noise and charged up an icy orb. It was hard to get a clear shot with the Ludicolo dancing around, but Light fired the beam of ice and completely froze her entire beak.

Surprised and upset, Lily can’t do any attack that required firing stuff out of her mouth until the ice melts. Nonetheless, Light glowed white and shrunk down to only half its size.

Lily punched at the layer of ice covering her beak as Light her up in a bluish glow. Exerting some more energy, the Staryu crumpled her forward until her beak stuck out between her legs. This didn’t really do much except for minor damage, so Light tossed her back onto the ground.

I didn't expect that level of success... This, my dear Light, is quite the opportunity. While that beak and its dangers are sealed off, we can strike.

Begin by throwing Lily into the trees with Psychic. Follow it up by blasting her with a mighty Thunder attack - even with her type resistance it's still got power! End your turn by floating away and resting for a moment.

Ever see a Ludicolo angry? It isn't a pretty sight.

Lily, use Protect to ward off that Psychic. No way we're tangling with those trees again.

When it takes aim at you with Thunder, use Sunny Day. It should lessen the chances of it hitting, and melt this ice.

Then, when its relaxing, use the sun...

The Staryu’s core started to glow blue again as it directed a burst of psychic energy at its opponent. Lily was having none of this, as she set up another impenetrable wall. Well, it won’t be impenetrable for long. This second Protect was slightly weaker and took a lot more energy than the last one.

Suddenly, electric sparks crackled from the tip of Light’s top point. Acting as fast as she could, Lily summoned the sun to shine brightly onto the courtyard. The ice on her beak was quickly thawing as the arena warmed up by several degrees. But Lily only managed to half-dodge the Thunder attack as the arc of lighting whizzed overhead, frying her lilypad crown.

After that attack, Light relaxed to gain back some energy. This gave Lily plenty of time to charge up a quick and powerful beam of solar energy. The Solarbeam flew through the arena with amazing force, blasting the Staryu all the way back into a wall. Light slumped onto the ground, her entire front side tanned by the attack.

My, my... everything old is new again.

We can't count on the beak freezing this time, so let's instead try for a different ailment - force-feed Lily a Secret Power. Assuming you're still somewhere on the marble square, take advantage of her resting to produce a Double Team. And since that should give you some protection from the Razor Leaf, open fire with a Swift.

Light’s tough opponent sure liked to be loud. Lily opened her big bill again and gave another ear-splitting Uproar. Light endured the attack once again while charging up and firing a Secret Power beam right into Lily’s mouth. The Uproar ended abruptly while Lily coughed violently, and something else happened. The Secret Power had poisoned her!

Lily coughed some more while she sat down and regained some energy back. Light felt more satisfied and increased her evasion by creating 4 identical images of itself.

Lily seemed disheartened by the 5 Staryus now facing her. She flung Razor Leaves at them, which managed to destroy two of the images. But they were both clones. Now the remaining Lights jumped back and fired several yellow stars that whizzed across and smacked into Lily.
The sun continued to shine as the Ludicolo took some damage from the poison.

THEN, use Brick Break to blast away the Screen.

Finally, since the sun is still shining, use Solarbeam when it comes at you for the Tackle.

The gems on the two Staryus glowed white as they created a transparent shield to protect themselves. Lily went into her little dance again, firing sharp leaves out from her hands. Since the leaves are physical and not energy based, they passed easily through the screen and hit one of the Staryus. However, it was only a clone.

Light fired off several yellow stars that struck the Ludicolo with no problem. Lily bounced forward and thrust out her arm, shattering the Light Screen and hitting one of the images. She had a 50% chance of getting the right one and it turned out her guess was correct. The real Staryu was knocked back by the fighting move,

Without any clones and without a shield, the starfish jumped into the air and spun forward, hitting Lily for some minor damage. All this time, Lily charged up sunlight in her lilypad sombrero. Light knew this would hurt, so it braced itself as the powerful beam engulfed it. When the attack subsided, Light was laying on the floor several feet away with its gem blinking red – signaling that it was low on health.

First, use the Poison to your advantage. Use Facade.

    Then, use Razor Leaf again.

Finally, go in for a Mega Kick.

Light, you're going to fall this round, but you're going to go out fighting. I'm proud of you. Look how well you did with a type disadvantage and no type-advantage moves...

Begin the round by launcing an Ice Beam. Then launch a Double-Edge, and if you're still standing at all, fire off one last burst of Swift.

Lily felt the poison in her veins and used this to pump herself up for a powerful physical blow. Light, though badly injured, was still faster and fired another Ice Beam at her. Lily swerved to one side but was still hit for a rather large chunk of damage, although the sunlight made freezing impossible. Finally, the Ludicolo made contact and smacked the Staryu around with her broad hands.

Battered and bruised, Light went forward for a beefed-up version of its previous Tackle. But the starfish never made it. Razor Leaves flew through the air and slashed at it. This was the last that Light could endure and it flopped onto the ground a few inches from Lily.

    Light, return!

*The Pokemon vanishes in a beam of red light and returns to one Pokeball.*

Now, for my next combatant... I hope Lily's not allergic to cat hair, because here comes my male Meowth! Pudge, I choose you!

*He flings out the Pokeball, and a white cat with a coin on his head leaps out, meowing.*

Pudge, start the round by trying to Hypnotize that dancing cactus/pineapple, and then perform an Aerial Ace. End the turn by performing a Faint Attack.

Lily, this may be your last round, so let's make sure Pudge remembers us.

First, just close your eyes to avoid the Hypnosis.

Then, hit it with Focus Punch.

    Then, use Water Pulse.

If the Hypnosis works regardless, use Sleep Talk twice.

With only one Pokémon down, this fight was far from over. Fresh from his PokeBall, a small cat Pokémon appeared to do battle. With great agility, the Meowth moved first and tried to look at Lily deeply in the eyes. But there was nothing to stare at since Lily sat down and shut her eyes tightly to avoid the sleep move.

No matter…Pudge slashed the air and sent several strips of wind slashing into Lily. The Ludicolo cringed, feeling that the end was near. But she was going to go out with a bang. Her right fist started to glow a fierce blue and then she charged at the Meowth. There was a flash, a boom, and Pudge was sent flying into a wall with a big bruise on his chest.

Pudge staggered back up. Lily panted from exhaustion, which gave him extra time to disappear for his next attack. Lily had no way of detecting where her opponent was until it was too late. A quick smack in her back was all it took to send her toppling forward, unconscious.

Pudge, start by Faking Out Atlas - this should wreck his Cross Chop. Screech loudly enough to mess up his Rock Tomb attempt, and then counter the Secret Power with Aerial Ace.

A Machop popped out of his PokeBall and flexed his muscles. Will his Fighting type attacks prove too much for the Normal type Meowth?
Pudge knew that in order to combat this tough new opponent, he would need to avoid those Fighting moves as much as he can. When the Machop crossed his arms in preparation for an attack, Pudge rushed forward with astonishing speed. Startled, Atlas was knocked over as he brought arms out. But the Meowth rushed away with the same speed so that Atlas hit nothing but thin air.

Pudge gave a big “Meow” in a loud voice that sounded like nails on a chalkboard. Atlas covered his ears at first, but then realized his next attack would shut the cat up. He pounded the ground with a fist so that four rocky spires around Pudge shot out of the ground, trapping him in between. Pudge cringed as the rough surfaces scraped his skin. He can’t even move.

Atlas then fired out a beam of Normal energy. But instead of damaging the Meowth, he smashed one of the rocks, which was enough to free his opponent. Pudge jumped out and swiped the air to send strips of wind slashing into Atlas.

Let's take the "usual" route for this round, Pudge. Whatever we do needs to be uncomplicated enough that Dark Sage's moves won't lethally scramble the plan.

Begin with another Aerial Ace. Follow this up by jumping in and Slashing him across the face, and then step back a few steps and Taunt him.

Aerial Ace - Slash - Taunt

Atlas, use Double Team to try to avoid the Aerial Ace.

When it comes at you for a Slash, wait to see if it connects. Whether it does or not, then hit it with a Brick Break.

There's no avoiding that Taunt... If it wants you to attack, do so. Use Cross Chop.

As Pudge launched another Aerial Ace, Atlas split into several copies of himself. But Aerial Ace was one of those fast, superaccurate types of move and the attack quickly located the real Machop, hitting him while his clones were destroyed.

The Meowth rushed toward the Machop, his sharp claws extended to deliver a serious Slash attack. Atlas stubbled backwards as the claws grazed against his chest. Three red lines in his skin marked the damage done. But the fighting type retaliated with an even more powerful blow. He brought his arms forward hard and fast, which slammed into Pudge and knocked him onto the ground with another bruise.

Pudge got up and faced the Machop with a smirk. He shouted out a bunch of verbal taunts, including some that insulted his masculinity. Atlas glared at his opponent with a fiery anger in his eyes. He crossed his arms and flung them outward, promptly shutting up the Meowth as he was sent soaring into the air. He landed in front of the angry trees, missing them by less than a foot as he scrambled back to meet his opponent.

Okay, Pudge - we've got him doing nothing but attacking. The trick is that we can counter his attacks easier than "tricky" moves.

Start by ruining Atlas's aim with a bright Flash. Then spit a Water Pulse down his throat during the Flamethrower, and perform Hypnosis for the last action - let's see him try to shut his eyes when he's trying to get his hands on you.

An angry Atlas flexed his muscles before executing his next attack. But the charm on Pudge’s forhead glowed brightly – so brightly in fact, that a beam of light erupted outwards and blinded the Machop. Atlas stumbled around and released the attack he built up. It missed Pudge by a long shot and hit the trees behind him. This really got those trees angry.

Next, Atlas spewed out a stream of flames, but that too missed Pudge. Fortunately, it hit the ground instead of hitting the trees and causing a fire. The Meowth charged up an orb of water energy and then hurled it forward. It hit the Machop squarely in the face, causing him to fall over as water splashed all over his upper body.

Apparently, some of this water seemed to clear his vision. Angry and frustrated, Atlas charged forward. Pudge got his chance to look at his opponent in the eyes. His own eyes glowed red as sleep-inducing waves emanated from them. Atlas stopped in his tracks, his eyes drooped, and he fell forward in a deep sleep.
