Wii Update 4.2 taking names, killin Wiis

I got heads up on this on Facebook yesterday and now its being reported by Kotaku, so I find it pretty reliable. Apparently the update is mistaking many Wii systems for modded systems and well... destroying them with a vengeance. Nintendo has put out this statement.

Some of you have reported problems with your Wii console after updating to the Wii System Menu 4.2. The symptoms most people are describing usually occur when the Wii has been modified. However, some of you also mention your system has never been modified.

We'd like to help get your system working properly again. If you're experiencing problems with your Wii console after downloading Wii System Menu 4.2, and you believe your system has not been modified, please give us a call. If we find that you have a normal system and the update caused your system to not work, we'll repair it at no charge.

Please call our Customer Service Department at your earliest convenience, 1-800-255-3700. We are open 6 AM to 7 PM, Pacific Time, 7 days a week.

Mods aren't just for pirated games, there is an incredibly vibrant and legitimate indie and modding gaming community that remains very maligned by a bunch of pen-pushing lawyers who can afford to fight cases, unlike the indie developers. The Wii system is unique for its waggle-stick technology and you can find many videos on YouTube with cool tricks people have done.

Furthermore, it shouldn't be illegal to open up something you own and modify.

If Nintendo, and other developers, didn't use this ludicrous policy and treated customers as customers, not criminals, you wouldn't have consoles bricking all over the place.

The fact that they decided to go BAN FUCKING EVERYONE on their forums just shows what morons they really are. Although, check out what is at the bottom of the bar on the photo provided of someone who was kickbanned for daring to question Ninty. lol torrents

Now, rant over, thanks Roy, haven't got my Wii with me at the moment but I'll be ever vigilant.

Your welcome Heald and just to inform everyone, while this does go after Mods, it also has a glitch that is going after ALL systems. So its like playing Russian Roulette with your Wii if you choose to update. It may update fine, it may destroy your system, modded or not.
