The Great Fic-Swap Contest: It's on like DK!

Hullo all!

We are planning to run an innovative new contest called:

The Great Fic-Swap Contest!

Yes, size 6 text is necessary.

The idea is simple and pretty fun: writers will have to write a mock chapter of ANOTHER PERSON'S FIC, trying to imitate the style as closely as possible! You can write a serious chapter, or a parody, but remember that the aim is to match the original writer's style as closely as possible in order to win!

First up, we'll have a week of sign-ups for writers to register their fic to be swapped for the contest. To register, you have to nominate your own fic as well as expressing an interest in writing a chapter of somebody else's. Once we have enough fics registered, you'll be able to choose whose fic you want to write on a first-in, best-dressed basis!

This awesome idea comes to us courtesy of the esteemed DragoKnight. Thanks Tony!

I shall be nominating my Fic Sebastian's Travels since some people have expressed their interest in writing a chapter for it. But is it alright if I decline the right to write a chapter of someone else's fic. This is because I am not really a strong writer and writing a chapter for someones fic like Gavin or Classy would be more likely to be considered as a butchering rather then a work of art.

CEB and Asilynne: It's both feet in, or neither! If you put your fic up for the contest, you have to be willing to compete too, and vica versa! It's all part of the fun. Besides, it wouldn't really be a Fic SWAP unless you're actually swapping fics with someone.

The Great Fic-Swap Contest!

Okay, competitors! It's time to choose WHICH fic you will be writing for this contest! The list of fics is below, and it's run on a first-in, best-dressed basis. So get in quickly to choose the fic you want! To make it fair, I'll take whichever fic is left till last, as long as it's not my own ^_^.

DON'T START WRITING YET. Once everyone has chosen a fic to write, I'll post the details of the contest itself (ie. length of submissions, etc), and we'll go from there!

Alrighty, I'm gonna take a risk here and (a thousand apologies to classy for what I'm about to do to her work) take a crack at Scattered Lights.

It's a lot to take on, as I'll have to do some serious homework (two prior fics' worth) to get the clearest grip on everything, but I'm looking forward to it... You can just be thankful my contribution won't be 'canon', however.

Okay then - that means, by default, that Tara will take Lisa the Legend (I can't write my own fic ... ^_^) and I'll take May May Come.

I should point out to Mikachu and DragoKnight - there's no need to read through the entire fics, the idea is just to write a chapter that imitates the style of that writer and his/her fic. It doesn't have to be 'canon' necessarily - although that doesn't hurt, of course! It's up to you how heavily you research your piece.

I'll wait until Tara has replied to this (so everyone knows what fic they've got) and then I'll post the instructions.

The Great Fic-Swap Contest!

Okay, competitors! Sharpen your quills and dust off your keyboards, because the time has come for the Great Fic-Swap Contest to begin!

Instructions:

1. Write one chapter (or equivalent) of your chosen fic of not less than 1000 words. There is no maximum word limit: just keep in mind the general word length of your fic's chapters and strive to match that as best you can.

2. The aim is to imitate the style of the author whose fic you are writing, so do your best to make it seem authentic, even if you are writing a parody.

3. Ideally, the chapter you write will follow on in sequence from wherever the most recently-posted chapter of your fic left off, though this is not vital.

4. When you are finished with your piece, post it in a new thread in the main Fanfiction forum. Make sure the thread title includes the fic name and mentions that it is a fic-swap contest entry.

5. All submissions must be posted by August 8, 2009, though you can post them up earlier if you wish.

6. After the deadline has passed, a popular vote will determine the winner of the Great Fic-Swap Contest, who will then win eternal glory and fame (and maybe a nice plaque, too!).

Credit for this awesome idea goes once again to DragoKnight.

Oh I feel so sorry for you guys, especially PancaKe whose story I was going to take, but I'm afraid I'll have to withdraw. I have taken too many projects this summer, including preparations for my Japanese course, my TPMer quiz, ASB festival. I should have thought before entering this contest. It just seems now that I can't make it.

So what are we going to do about my entry?

I still plan on being in this contest but I need to let you know that my entry may have to be on Sunday night....is that ok? I work ~12 hours a day most days during the week and lately even on my days off Ive been required to do other things x.x but I only have to work one job on sunday so Ill be able to get shit done ^-^ *begs for an extra day*

Haha, it's funny how we've all been silent up until the last day, and now we're looking for extra time! And I'm guilty as charged, I really needed more time myself; I've just only finished going over A Doolittle of Pokemon (and loved it!!) and I've still got KTR to go before I even think of attempting a take on Scattered Lights.

Classy's work deserves better than a rush job... Thanks for saving us all, Gav!

*raises hand*

Yep, I realise the deadline has passed and of the six contestants, only DragoKnight managed to get his (very expertly done) submission done in time. However, I'd love to see this contest come to full fruition, so let's throw the deadline ahead to September 1st and see if the rest of us laggards can all really apply ourselves and get this thing done! It's all just a bit of fun, after all!

I'm going to take half an hour every day and make sure I chip away at this until it's done! Full Moon, here I come!
