The anime still has a solid following, you're just not looking in the right places. Most of the fans of the anime are over at Bulbagarden and Serebii, and both anime sections are very active.

Everyone knows the anime is the same thing over and over, its been like that since Johto started. But people still enjoy the different things that happens, Ash's different travel companions and different Pokemon on the group. Obviously now that the show has nearly 800 total episodes, its pretty ridiculous to try and watch it all, but people still do. So whatever.

I still like it. The only disappointing thing about the Unova season is that it seemed too short and after the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the show waited too long to introduce Team Plasma. I think Gible should rejoin Ash's team as Axew could teach Gible how to master Draco Meteor. Axew had similar problems with Dragon Rage and would be a perfect tutor to Gible. Either that or have Iris be given Gible to train herself. At least this region Team Rocket became serious enough to earn back Giovanni's trust and not constantly building faulty robots that will eventually explode on them.

I like Pokemon anime enough to keep watching it. But we know many old fans are tired of its repetitive nature and have moved on to other anime. Also, Pokemon has hard time getting new fans because it's still labelled as kids' series and on the other hand, new children are less likely to pick Pokemon up because the show isn't that original anymore. Pokemon lost its hype years ago and now we have so many other franchises based on collecting such as Skylanders.

For many people, Pokemon anime should have changed more along times, but it didn't. While viewers grew up, the series stayed the same. Ages ago, fans wanted to drop Ash and introduce a new main character and a plotline, but the writers never did that.

But Pokemon still lives on for me and other stubborn fans. I guess you just don't have to take it so seriously, or at least, take it seriously enough to still like it but don't compare it with shorter and 'more mature' animes with more surprises like Death Note and Code Geass. A long anime with many episodes gets recursive in the end quite easily.

But face it, Pokemon is still brought in the spotlight when new games are introduced. New Pokemon and companions bring variation. I'm even seeing a contradiction here. There are always hardcore original Kanto six fans who say Ash should have kept his original Pokemon and trained them, not abandoned them for good. But starting fresh is a good way to keep up with the games since they always have new starters. Of course there could be other ways to 'keep up with the games', but still.

I like how Team Rocket actually got smarter upon arrival in Unova and NOT using robots prone to blowing up on them in literally every episode. Even Jessie was more professional in keeping their orders from Giovanni straightforward. I think in the episode where they take the meteorite from the Nacrane City museum, Meowth noticed Pikachu standing in front of them and suggesting that they take it as well and Jessie replies that they got what they came for and do not need anything else. Before Unova,, Jessie would jump at any chance of grabbing the electric mouse in a heartbeat. Team Rocket seems less greedy this time around and are a lot more serious which they really haven' been since the second episode of the series where they attack the Pokemon Center.

I think after Battle Frontier, the anime actually got good. DP is one of the best sagas in the anime, but at the same time, it isn't too great, since the anime is still fairly low quality, but it gets the job done. If anything, it's an entertaining half an hour of animated Pokemon, you can't go wrong with that. It still has a strong following and has been going for many years. Episode 789 aired just two days ago in Japan. If a series has been going on for that long, you know it's doing something right.

The anime has never really gotten any worse or any better after Kanto, each saga has its highs and lows. The difference is everyone grew up and since the show is essentially the same thing over and over people lose interest.

Kanto stood out because it was the first time we were seeing everything. After that we mostly knew what to expect.

The anime has never gotten terrible, its just that people lose interest so they think whatever saga they stopped watching at was terrible not because the episodes were bad, but simply because they grew tired of the show.
