Circa 1000 BC – Tales of 'Gods' sweep through civilised Europe. The most famous examples are Asclepius, a supernatural healer, Prometheus, who could create fire, and Hercules, a man endowed with superhuman strength. Likewise, people hear of beasts such as Medusae, Mermaids and Minotaurs.
Circa 300 AD – A man named George single-handedly slays a dragon and is revered as a Saint in Christianity.
700-1400 AD – Wizards, witches and alchemists perform fabulous feats across both Islamic and European nations. Many kingdoms have an established royal magician, and some rulers are fascinated with the dark arts.
1450-1700 AD – Supernatural powers are viewed as heathen and anyone who claims or is accused of being witches or demons are burned alive. By 1700, all traces of anyone displaying supernatural powers are lost.
1st January 1963 – Minutes after midnight (GMT), large structures appeared in the skies and out poured thousands of alien craft and hundreds of thousands of alien invaders. Across the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and the South Pacific, major cities are targeted and the defences of nations are quickly overwhelmed. However, ordinary citizens suddenly display extraordinary powers, some being able to fly and others being able to shoot fire from nothing. As the sun broke, thousands of so-called ‘Supers’ were selflessly risking their lives to save the human race. By the end of the day, the alien forces had been dealt an irrecoverable blow and what was left of their forces limped back to their home planet.
2nd January 1963 – President Kennedy issued a proclamation thanking the Supers of the world for their heroic contribution and a monument for those lost in the battle is erected at the National Mall, Washington D.C.. One of the most prominent American heroes, Richard Cadman, is invited to make a speech by the President and he announces the formation of the League of Heroes, an international organisation tasked with protecting humanity and assisting in global humanitarian projects. One of their most stringent and celebrated codes is that they should not side with any political affiliation or government.
A decade of prosperity followed this milestone in human history and the human race enters a ‘golden age’ give many countries developing and many projects underway. This period was not to last though. The Soviets, in their race to become the one superpower, sent any Supers in their states to training camps and scientific labs in order to harness their true potential, trying to create so-called ‘Super-Soldiers’. In response, President Nixon agreed to the secret, and once exposed highly controversial, Patriot Program, conscripting Supers into fighting alongside regular forces. Many of those conscripted were members of the League of Heroes and as such contravened their code. Many heroes refused to fight, whereas others side with their country. A schism between Western and Eastern heroes in the league caused its collapse, and without a strong united front of superheroes, super-villains began appearing across the globe. Richard Cadman is elected the 39th President of the United States, but disillusioned with the job, he resigns in 1981 after only 1 term.
The year 2008, and there is no longer any global united super force. Individual heroes protect cities or just do crime-fighting, some villains use their powers for evil and some have returned to civilian life. However, a parting gift from the alien forces has begun to stir, and soon the entire planet will be at risk once again.
