I asked Asi before posting the picture, but I'm going to use this thread to post progress shots of the piece. First off, here's the sketch. I asked Asi for guidelines on what the hairstyle should look like, so the next update will reflect those revisions.

Next sketch attached. I'm about an hour and a half into blocking in the colors. I like to paint over colors a lot until I reach that I can visualize. This is the general direction I see the piece going in terms of the mood. I'll probably spend a bit more time touching up the colors, and then I'll flatten the image and paint over a single layer.

Right now, the layers are: Sketch, Figures (blocked in colors for the characters and ships), and BG.

More updates...one layer, flipping the canvas over back and forth. This helps me to see errors and correct them more easily.
