Anime Robot Ears?

An odd question. Ya know those ear-like dealies a robot(girl) character will usually have, like HMX-12 Multi's, HMX-13 Serio's, and Nuku Nuku's? Well, WHAT IN THE FLYING MONKEY-*** HELL ARE THEY AND WHAT ARE THEY FOR?!?! Err,*ahem*, sorry

But, really, it's just really been bothering me for THE longest time (17 minutes ) an' I was just curious, because I'm in the process of developing my own little fan-comic, and one of the characters is an android (sort of, long story) so I wanted to be able to explain them, not even acknowledging the fact that I need some pics for reference (comics are hard work )

In Chobits, I believe they are the external cables, the input/output cables for the prototype. It's a lot more convenient to put them around the ears than... any other place, I suppose. Looks weird, but any other place seems like it would even more weird. :/
I think that would be the main reason for the robotic ears on the otherwise completely humanlike android of many characters in anime.

Think about it, Ariels/Antennae work best the higher they are and the ear gives a handy little place to 'attatch/hang' them without looking too alien, (ie a set of Forehead antennae or a Sattelite Dish coming out of thier @$$....

Medabots. Yeesh...

Anyway, androids r supposed to look weird. Well, according to ur reaction, i guess they animators did a good job. But like UC said, antennae r best on the highest point, and ears work well.

Im talking rubbish, so ill shut up now...
