The Gangs Pokemon, why the writers gave him them.

Why do you think the writers chose to gave the main guys that Pokemon?

Pikachu-Popular in japan.
Heracross-Saw a topic about it a minute ago, that Pokemon was based on beetles fighting, and HEracross was one of them.
Poli's-I am pretty sure it is Satoshi Tajari's favorite Pokemon/

Well that would explain why I see Poli merchandise everywhere.

And about heracross....

Anywho, I think most of the pokemon given the gang are due to marketability. That's why they don't use Mr. Mimes or some of the other more... 'interesting' pokemon. It's much easier to market an adorable blue turtle thatn a freakish half human mime. The writers are also careful not to give the gang too many cute pokemon so they mix in some tough looking ones (Muk, Tauros, Kingler, and Primeape were some good early examples. And of course Charizard)

YEah about the Poliwhirl, rember the Macraoni, I mean Squirtle,Charmander,Jigglypuff,Bulbasuar,Meowth, and Pikachu are very common, but then they throw in that blue frog who is like in.....one or two episodes of the first season.
