    Default The World Champion

I has been a long time since I've done any writing. This is probably my first attempt at a fanfic in over a year, and so I may be a bit rusty (not that I was ever very good at this in the first place). I'll warn everyone in advance, my track record of finishing fics is very bad. In fact, I don't think I've ever made it past the 5th or 6th chapter in any story I've ever written.

    My goals here are:

    1. To work on my perseverance. I really do hope to finish this one.

    2. To improve on my somewhat lacking writing skills (including my vocabulary, spelling, grammar, etc...).

I encourage people to be critical of my work.

    Alright, here we go.

    The World Champion
    By Forest Griffith-Onnen
    Introduction

Eric Walker lay back in his recliner, watching the battle on TV with moderate interest. He already knew who was going to win. Ever since his older brother Sidney had won the Ammatuer League a month early, he had gone undefeated as a professional trainer. This would be his 20th win in a row. At this rate, he'll take the title of "World Champion" in his first year as a pro, Eric thought, somewhat disappointed that his older brother had gotten so far in his first year as a trainer.

If Sidney won the Professional League and went on to become the champion, he would be the youngest trainer ever to take the title. Eric liked to imagine himself setting that record, however he would just be starting out as a new trainer the next day, while his brother was already a pro. I'll catch up, he thought, yawning. He reached over and picked his blanket and pillow up from off the floor, and after positioning himself comfortably, fell asleep. Soon after, his brother was announced the winner of his 20th match as a professional trainer.

As Sidney walked back to his hotel in Sunset City, something surfaced from the bottom of his memory. The next morning Eric would be starting his career as a trainer. He sighed, knowing that he would not be able to make it to see his brother off. He had yet another match tomorrow. This would make 3 days in a row with matches. His pokemon were becoming exhausted. He was concerned that they might not have the endurance to make it through their next match.

In the long run, Sidney knew it mattered little to Eric whether or not he showed up. His younger brother cared little about other people. The only things he was concerned with was his goals and the obstacles that got in between him and his goals. Sidney often thought that the only thing him and his brother shared was intellect and appearance, and if it weren't for that he would've suspected that one of them had been adopted.

Sidney made his way to his room. It was a small room, with only a single bed, and a small TV for entertainment. It's only redeeming quality was it's view over Sunset City Lake. So far he had not made enough money has a professional trainer to afford much more. Actually, even if Sidney had the money to afford a Suite, he wouldn't have gotten one. He had decided that his earnings would not be spent to earn himself unnecessarily comforts.

Yawning, Sidney flipped off the light and snuggled into his bed. Before he dozed off, he ran through some of his strategies for the next day's match, and then fell soundly asleep.

It was 1:00 in the morning, and William Griffith was still awake. He would be one of the ten trainers who would be beginning their careers as pokemon trainers later that morning. Will had been laying in his bed staring at the ceiling for nearly 3 hours now, thinking about what his future would hold. He had always dreamed of one day leaving home to become to become a pokemon trainer, yet when he turned thirteen, (the minimum age required to get a pokemon license) his parents had refused to let him go saying that he was too young. His two best friends, Sidney and Nick, had both left the previous year when they had turned 13. Will was now 15, and just getting ready too receive his first pokemon.

Will had always known that Sidney was an extremely intelligent kid, and a very talented pokemon trainer. Yet he had still been surprised that Sidney had been able to breeze through the amateur league grabbing first place on his first try. Many trainers tried for years and never made it. Will saw Sidney as his goal. Throughout his entire life he had always been in Sidney's shadow. At school Sidney always got better grades than him. Whenever they played games, Sidney always won. Will wanted to be able to force Sidney to view him as an equal.

After Nick had lost in league, Will had been looking forward to having him return to Dawn Town so that he could see him. However, Nick had not yet returned. Apparently he had moved in with his girlfriend's family (whom Will had never met) in Lunar City. Last Will had heard, Nick was planning on entering the league again this year.

As he thought about his friends, Will drifted off to sleep, unaware that he was even doing so.

Interesting thought. I don't see anything wrong with your writing style. The character jumping was a bit confusing but not enough to matter. I noticed that the cities where themed after the sky. Well anyway you got your first reader here.

    Chapter 1: Amy Lee

Amy Lee was rudely awoken in the morning by her alarm clock. She checked the time. "Only six," She muttered. Her match wasn't for another two hours. I must've forgotten to change the alarm settings last night for todays match she thought, remembering that two days earlier she had, had a match at seven.

Deciding that she would have plenty of time to take a shower and change later, Amy got up to look up her opponent on her computer. This was something most professional trainers did before all their matches, and also something that Amy usually forgot to do.

The computer screen flickered on, illuminating her dark hotel room. As soon as it had booted up, Amy logged into the Professional League's database and checked her match schedule. There was a graph that listed all her scheduled matches in the season. She checked for her opponent in her upcoming match. Next to the current date on the graph, the name Sidney Walker was displayed in blue. Amy clicked the link to view Sidney's profile.

At the very top of the page a brief bio of her opponent was included. It was little more than a paragraph, and the only significant piece of information it gave was that it was Sidney's first year as a pro. This shouldn't be too hard, Amy thought. This was her second year as a pro, and she was doing well with a record of 13 wins to 6 losses, but in her first year she had managed to win only one match. She wasn't the only one. Most new pros won only a few matches during their first season.

Under the bio it listed Sidney's pokemon. Amy studied the list for a moment, but didn't waste too much time on it. The real information that she needed would be gained by reviewing his matches and how well he handled his pokemon. Under his pokemon the page gave links to summaries of all his recent battles. Amy couldn't help but notice that this would be his third day in a row with a match, and that after he had gotten out of his last match all the pokemon centers would have been closed to all but emergency visits. It meant that most likely most of his pokemon were weak, unless he had gotten lucky and had a small battle (the maximum number of pokemon allowed in a battle was decided randomly at the beginning of the match).

Amy clicked the link to view Sidney's most recent match. It had been a 4v4, and Sidney had won using only two of his pokemon, neither of which had been knocked out. Amazing, Amy thought. Professional matches were generally much closer than that, and rarely did someone in their first year pull that kind of a victory,

After looking through a few more of Sidney's matches, Amy came to a realization. Her opponent was an amazing trainer. He had won all his most recent matches without having a single pokemon knocked out. Amy was beginning to have doubts as to whether or not she would be able to beat him.

Amy continued through the list of matches, reading every one of them in awe. He was going undefeated in his first season! She tried to shake off the terrible feeling that she was going to end up losing horribly in the match, but she couldn't. No matter how she looked at it, there was no way she was as talented as this kid. Realizing that her negativity wasn't going to help her win, she switched to reading some of her own match summaries to try and boost her confidence.

Once every trainer had participated in exactly 25 matches, the top eight trainers would be listed. For the rest of the season, the competition would be much greater, as every trainer would be trying even harder than normal to end up on the list. Only the trainers on the list would be allowed into the tournament at the end of the league that would determine who would get a chance at taking the title of "World Champion" from Johan Keenan. Amy was hopeful that if she did well in her next 6 matches that she would make the list.

It wasn't until ten minutes before her match started that Amy noticed the time. There she was, still in her pajamas, her shoulder length blond hair in a mess, and without breakfast. It took about ten minutes to walk from her hotel the stadium. This is going to be so embarrassing, Amy thought as she sped down the hotel stairs and out through the lobby into the streets of Sunset City.

It didn't take Amy long to arrive at the stadium. She practically skidded to a halt in front of the main desk. "Hi, this is Amy Lee. I'm here for my match." She told the man sitting behind the desk. The man looked at her oddly as if she were playing some kind of joke.

"Did you just get up, or are you just too lazy to change out of your bed clothes?" He asked harshly. Amy turned pink. "Hurry up and get in there," He continued, "Your match begins in under a minute."

Amy didn't have time to build up courage to enter the stadium. If she was late for her match she would be disqualified. Taking a deep breath, she pushed open the doors and stepped into the stadium.

The front door to Professor Spectrum's lab opened. Will stepped in, looking as though he had gotten next to no sleep the previous night. This was not far off. He had fallen asleep around 2 AM, and woke up about three and a half hours later in order to take a shower and get changed before his mom drove him to the lab. He was so tired he felt like he could collapse, and even the prospect of starting his career as a pokemon trainer didn't excite him as much as the possibility of setting up camp early on and taking a bit of a snooze.

The other nine kids who would be receiving their first pokemon were already there, and were all sitting at a rather large circular table in the center of the room. Will knew most of the kids from school, but there were only two who he was more than just an aquaintance too. These two were Eric, and Kelly, a girl he had dated for a couple weeks in his 8th grade year. It had been mostly a physical relationship, and had ended with her cheating on him.

Will took a seat next to Eric. They weren't the best of friends, but because Eric was Sidney's brother him and Will knew one another pretty well. Will didn't say anything. He felt too tired to participate in small talk, and it wasn't Eric's style to do so any ways.

Professor Spectrum stood at the end of the table opposite to Will. He cleared his throat. The talking at the table died down. "I'm sure you all are anxious to get your first pokemon, and therefore I shall make this as brief as humanly possible," he began, "You will leave here today with a brand new pokemon. I have chosen ten young pokemon from my own collection that I will hand out randomly to you in just a minute.

"Once you leave here, if you have hopes of participating in the Amateur League in ten months, you should obtain at least 4 badges from around the Sunny Islands. In case any of you hadn't noticed, I have placed ten maps on the table directing you too the different gyms. You may each take one.

"Now for your pokemon." Professor Spectrum continued, holding up a bag holding the pokeballs that contained every ones pokemon. "I'll go around the table clockwise, and you can each choose a pokeball. Of course there is no way to tell what your pokeball will contain, so it is, essentially, random. I'll ask that you wait until everyone has gotten their pokeball before you open yours."

The professor began to make his way around the table. To Will, it seemed that everyone was taking too long to pick their pokemon. The excitement of the day had finally caught up with him. When the professor finally got to him, he dived his hand into the bag, and without hesitating grabbed a pokeball. Finally, he thought, smiling.
