No, unfortunately you can't trade with the Red/Blue/Yellow/Gold/Silver/Crystal versions of Pokémon. However, the current Advanced Generation games (Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald and FireRed/LeafGreen) will be compatible with the new Diamond and Pearl games that are going to be released sometime in the future.

Ok, well that's a shame, but at least those of us who kept their original pkmn games will be able to finally transfer our original teams around. Thanx for the help

[color=magenta]Oh, I am sorry if I worded that wrong, I meant that the current Advanced Generation games would be compatible with Diamond and Pearl, not the old R/B/Y/G/S/C games. Sorry for the confusion!!Originally Posted by Ceipe

Heh, I know what you mean, Christen; because many of their past decisions, I don't like that forum, either. So for people who, like me, don't like the green forums, I've found an alternative website with the info: DP Report
Yeah, I'm obsessed. Have a nice day.
(To think this info was out last summer and I didn't know... *cries*)
Ah, thanks for finding that page. I will go ahead and remove the link from my post now. Thanks again!!

It will never be possible to trade between the old RBYGSC and any game that is compatible with the Advance Generation, for one big reason: when Nintendo made Ruby/Sapphire they completely rewrote the engine. The Special stat was divided into Special Attack and Special Defense in Gold/Silver, but they were still much more closely linked than physical Attack and Defense. It wasn't until Ruby/Sapphire when the two stats became different enough that the game makers had to put in a new effort-boosting supplement, Zinc. Nintendo probably wanted to do that in Gold/Silver. Why didn't they? Because they had to make Gold/Silver use the same stat/battle engine as RBY in order to make trades and battles possible. By the time the Advance Generation was in the works, that old engine was so horribly outdated that Nintendo gave up on compatibility entirely so that they could get in the improvements they wanted.

Mmm... that's sort of right, but it wasn't the updated items or new features that prevented backwards compatibility so much as them expanding the data save format. The Battle engine could have been changed to do whatever they wanted without affecting the ability to trade (which only affects the save data). Changing the battle engine would only have prevented link battles... and maybe not even then (the modern cart could have been given the ability to interpret the old one's info and to output in terms the old one could understand, within limits)
You have to realise that GSC's extra features like gender and the Special "split" were clever hacks on top of a data format never intended to record them (who would have predicted sequels in the mid-90's?). Nintendo/Game Freak decided to make a clean break so that they could re-do the data save format from the ground up, including extra hidden values that can be used to drive any future bright ideas they may have. This was a calculated risk - they could have alienated a lot of their existing support base by doing so. And there were a lot of grumbles about it at the time. However, they *did* that fix to allow future-proofing, so they aren't going to turn around and do it again in a hurry.
