Default RBY Rumors and Fake Cheats

Remember these? Things such as "go the the SS Anne, Surf, then use Strength on the truck to get Mew!" Yeah, there were a ton of them back in the day, Pokemon was young and so were we, we didn't know what to expect from the series, and let's face it, we were gullible, so the rumors spread like wildfire. If there are any others that you remember post 'em! And did you fall for any of them?

Ones I remember, aside from the SS Anne one:
-Use a Leaf stone on Eevee to evolve it into Leafeon (not the Gen 4 Leafeon, a fake one, so it really amused me when I found out the real Leafeon's name). Supposedly you were supposed to use the stone over and over again until Eevee evolved.
-Take a Dratini, a Dragonair, and a Dragonite into Bill's house, a back door will appear, go out the back door, and there will be grass where Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle will appear.
-The pokegods, I still remember fighting the elite four over 12 times in a row without healing at a pokemon center since I had read in a magazine if you beat them a certain number of times without healing at a pokemon center, you were supposed to get the pokegods. It must have been an April issue or something.
-Mew could be found in the Seafoam Islands, guarding the Mist Stone, a stone that was supposed to evolve Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise.
-Pikablu and Raiblu, I can't remember any ways you were supposed to catch Pikablu but I remember that Pikablu was supposed to evolve into Raiblu when you use the Mist Stone on it.
-The guy that you trade a Raichu to for an Electrode tells you that the Raichu went away and evolved. I heard all sorts of rumors on how to find the evolved form of Raichu.
-A secret area north of Route 13, some said this is where you could get Mew, Pikablu, Raichu's evolved form, and the Mist Stone.
-Rumors on how to get Togepi on Yellow (everyone thought it was catchable since it appeared on the special edition GBC), or how to rent it on Stadium.

I fell for alot of them at first, including the Pokegods one (because if you read it in a magazine it must be true), the Bill's house one, the Seafoam Islands one, and tried forever trying to figure out how to get to that place north of Rt. 13. I also believed the evolved Raichu rumors since the guy in the game even told you that Raichu evolved. After a while I wised up, and by yellow took everything I heard with a grain of salt. So I didn't believe all the rampant Togepi rumors, and even refused to believe the real Mew glitch at first.

I actually wrote a parody of these once. Let me dig it up...okay, when reading this you need to understand that I was a member of an online Pokémon community where the term "lamer" was common slang for "idiot".

    How NOT to get Pokégods
    by Poryhedron

You all know about the famous S.S. Anne truck, right? The one you have to Surf east off the dock to reach, and there should be Mew there? To get the pokégods, the first thing you need to do is Surf off that dock, but west instead of east until you find a small island with an item ball. That's TM 52: Lamer. Teach Lamer to a Jigglypuff and evolve it into Wigglytuff. Now you're ready to catch some Pokégods!

    Flareth and Flarachu:
First, use the Game Shark Code that gives you the item for Surfing without a pokémon. Take Wigglytuff to the Secret House in the Safari Zone. Face the guy who gave you HM 3 and use Lamer. The guy will complain that he gives away all these Surf HM's and can't keep any for himself! Give him the Surf item and he'll offer you a choice of Flareth or Flarachu. Take either, and trade with someone who chose the other to get both of these fiery pokégods.

    Psybird and Psybur:
If you get at least 160 pokémon in your Pokédex, a new item will appear in the Pokédex menu: Copy. If you try to use it, you'll get the "OAK: This isn't the time to use that!" message. With Wigglytuff in your party, go to the Rock Tunnel and find the guy who says "When you finish your Pokédex, can I have it?" (He says this after you beat him in a trainer battle, so fight him if you haven't yet.) Use Lamer on him and he'll repeat his plea, offering you a special pokémon for it. Go into your Pokédex, choose Copy, and the Pokédex will create an exact copy of itself! Give this to the guy and he'll offer you Psybird or Psybur. Just like Flareth and Flarachu, choose one and trade for the other.

    Houou:
Put Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres into your party with Wigglytuff (if you've already evolved Articuno into Charticuno, get another Articuno by trade or Game Shark.) Go to Route 1 (where Ash saw Houou in the anime,) stand in the little spot near Viridian City that you can only get to by jumping down a ledge, and, after making sure one of the three birds is first in your party, use Lamer. Houou will appear. Fight it with only the three mythical birds and catch it. If you use any other pokémon, Houou will Whirlwind you away.

    Millenium and Chrono Mew:
Play through the game until you've racked up exactly 255 hours. Then, with Wigglytuff and no more than three other pokémon in your party, go to Vermillion City and visit the construction site. You'll find they still haven't gotten past step one--that Machop is still tamping the land! Face the man in charge, use Lamer and he'll say it's because two time-power pokémon have slowed time in his area. He'll ask you to help him. Say yes, and you'll go into a trainer battle with the man. He'll send out Millenium, then Chrono Mew. Beat him and he'll give you both! After this, check the clock. You'll find it will never go past 255 hours. This is because Millenium and Chrono Mew are helping you now!

    Togepi:
If you don't have a Poké Doll to spare, go to Celadon City and buy one. Visit Professor Oak's Lab, and with the Poké Doll at the top of your items, use Lamer on the lady in the front room. She'll say how cute the Doll is and can she have it? Say yes and she'll give you Togepi for the Poké Doll!

    Charticuno:
With Articuno in your party, go to Cinnabar Island and visit Blaine (you may have to withdraw the Secret Key to get back into his Pokémon Gym.) Use Lamer on him and he'll ask if you want to hear more about the Moltres incident (ask around the Gym if you don't know about this. The Moltres incident is what made Blaine decide to become a great fire pokémon trainer!) Say YES and Blaine will start talking. It'll be mostly covered in "..." like the story the president of the Pokémon Lovers' Club told you before he gave you the Bike Voucher. Eventually, Blaine will say he's got proof; when Moltres appeared to him, it dropped several feathers and Blaine collected them. He'll offer one to you as a momento. Accept it, use it on Articuno and it'll evolve into the Fire/Ice type Charticuno!

    Venustoise and Nidogod:
Take Wigglytuff, Nidoking, Nidoqueen, Venusaur and Blastoise to Bill's seaside cottage. Stand outside, facing the door, and use Lamer. There'll be a flash, and the music will be interrupted by a crash and then stop. Go in, and Bill will be standing next to his teleporter. Talk to him and he'll say he's been thinking about the time he got mixed with a pokémon; that was not a good thing, but it had possibilities. He's added a combiner option to his teleporter, and he'd like to test it. He'll ask if you can help him. Say yes, and he'll take Venusaur and Blastoise, put them into the two chambers and press a button. After another flash, Venustoise will appear and he'll give it to you. Then, talk to him again and he'll say he wants to do another test just to make sure everything's okay. Give him the Nidos, and he'll go through the whole thing again, this time making Nidogod.

    Pikablu:
Catch an extra Staryu and find Eric in Fuschia City (the guy who's wondering where Sara is.) Face him and use Lamer. He'll say Sara got a new pokémon. Now, find Sara (she's in the Safari Zone.) Use Lamer on her and she'll say she doesn't want her new pokémon anymore. Trade Staryu to her and she'll give you Pikablu! (It's nicknamed URLAME.)

Sapasaur, Charcolt, Rainer, Locustod, Beepin, Raticlaw, and Spooky:
These are all evolved forms of regular pokémon. To evolve them you need the "Lame Stone", which can be found in one of the old computers in the basement of Cinnabar Island's Pokémon Mansion. Stand in front of a computer and use Lamer; if the Lame Stone doesn't pop out, try another computer until you find it. Like an HM, the Lame Stone can be used over and over. Use it on these pokémon:

    Venusaur - Sapasaur
    Charizard - Charcolt
    Blastoise - Rainer
    Butterfree - Locustod
    Beedrill - Beepin
    Raticate - Raticlaw
    Gengar - Spooky

    Eevee evolutions:
First, get three more Eevees, by trade or by Game Shark--it doesn't matter how you get them. Go to Celadon Department Store and buy one of every Stone they have there. Then, use Lamer on the Clerk and he'll find a Moon Stone buried among the other Stones he has for sale. Buy that, too.
First, go to Mt. Moon and find the lone rock in a small room on the lowest floor. This is actually the core of the original Moon Stone, the meteorite that fell on Mt. Moon in prehistoric times. Face the core, use Lamer, and use the Moon Stone on Eevee. It'll say it won't work, but then the Moon Stone you're using and the core of the meteorite will glow, and Eevee will evolve into Lunareon.
Next, go to Viridian Forest and face the large tree that's by itself at the Viridian City end. Use Lamer and the kid standing there will get that "!" word balloon. He'll say, "You're here for Foleon, aren't you?" Say YES and he'll open a door in the tree. Go inside and use the Leaf Stone on another Eevee. The tree will glow, and Eevee will evolve into Foleon.
Finally, go to Celadon Mansion, enter from the rear and visit the man who knows everything. Use Lamer on him and he'll say, "So you want an Omneon, eh? Too bad you don't know how, and I do, because you're a lamer and I KNOW EVERYTHING!" He'll take the Fire Stone, Water Stone, Thunder Stone and your last Eevee and turn away so you can't see what he's doing. There's a flash, and he'll turn back to you and give you Omneon!

    *Missingno:
You all know how to fight and catch Missingno, right? Ever wonder why it's all garbled? It's that way because it's SICK. If you can cure it, you'll get to see what a Missingno really looks like, but none of the Pokémon Centers will know how to cure it. To cure it, you'll need a "Lamer Potion" that can only be found in the Pewter Museum of Science. Bring Wigglytuff to the Museum, go to the top floor, read the plaque at the space shuttle, and then use Lamer. The door of the shuttle will open and you can go in and get the Lamer Potion. Use it on a Missingno and it will clear up!

Once you've gotten all of these pokégods, you're ready for the ultimate challenge. With Wigglytuff and any four pokégods in your party (you should only have five pokémon,) go back to the island where you got the TM for Lamer, stand where the item ball was and use Lamer. Another pokémon will appear. This is Mewthree. This is your only chance to catch it, and if it ever goes in the PC, it will become a Caterpie. Good Luck!

LOL, Lame. Though you did a good job in making it sound plausible ^_^. The only cheat I ever thought to be really wrong was to beat the pokemon league 100 times without switching the gameboy off. At the end proffesor Oak would give you HM06 (Blast). Using Blast you could blow through those little pillar things near Pallet town, you were supposedlly be able to find Mew in the grass.

I used to spend all my free time hunting glitches and hidden things like this, before I discovered the Internet. I actually permanently destroyed the ability to save in about five cartridges as a result, but hey, totally worth it.

Hmm... I felt obligated to actually try them all, though I honestly never believed them. I think the most annoying one was the one where you had to buy a girl lemonade 255 times, and then she'd evolve Flareon or something. The details are fuzzy.

One I never really used was the one that said you had to input this huge complicated button code as you threw a pokeball and it was a guaranteed catch. The actual button code was a well-timed 'B'. I laughed whenever I saw it as 'Up down up left right A A start B' or something.

Then there was the infamous 'Beat the Elite Four however many times without healing at all and you'll get _____' or 'Beat the Elite Four with a team of Caterpies and you'll get ______'.

On a more amusing note, I once found a cheat that said you could 'catch Professor Oak'. I tried it, naturally, and nothing happened. However, on a different cartridge sometime later, I found a wild Professor Oak on the coast of Cinnibar, and caught him. Unfortunately, he took his revenge, it seems- Even opening the box with him in it froze and deleted that game.

    Heh, I remember these. Good stuff. ^_^;

The only one I considered while I was still playing RBY was one of the Mewthree rumors. It said that if you approached Mewtwo, circled it clockwise three times, and then talked to it from the front, it would change into a Mewthree before battling you. A friend of mine actually reset his game to try this... before trading his Mew to a different cartridge. Oops.

This isn't exactly a fake cheat, but it's in a similar vain of stupidity as the Mewthree thing... back in the days of RBY, I tried to catch a team of Mewtwo and train them all up to level 100. I ended up with four Mewtwo, one of which was fully levelled up... then Gold/Silver came out. And the introduction of Umbreon just about gave me a stroke.
    IT HAS RETURNED.

Hah, not exactly a rumour or anything, but my cousin used the Missingno. glitch once, and in the water he found (and caught) Blaine, stupidly enough. I can't remember if his cartridge broke, but I remember that Blaine had the attacks of one of his pokemon, lol!

Oh no, I remember that, it said if you talked to her 100 times when she's asking for drinks she'll get annoyed and give you the evolved form of Flareon. Me and my brother put the game on the Super Game Boy and used a turbo controller and set it to keep using the A button, then we went out somewhere, then we came back and the character was still talking to her but we didn't have one. xD

I do remember a couple of ones which I don't know whether they turn out to be true. One of them being the St. Anne. What I heard was a totally different rumour. The rumour is like when St. Anne left, it would return back to the port at 100:00 hours only if you had defeated the Elite 4 and caught Mewtwo. Hence from there, you have to return to the jetty and there would be two small pools. Use surf on both of them until you gotten Mew.

Back then, I was stupid enough and wasted like five days, trying to catch it. There was also another on you being able to use surf without the use of the HM and the water pokemon. It would appear on your menu as part of your item list.

And yes Missingno, the all famous pokemon. My friend caught it too and was breezing through the gyms and other trainers. It did seem pretty indestrutable at that time.

I discovered the most amazing cheat ever, that led to a shiny Butterfree in Yellow version, but it was a complicated "unplug the link cable while using Pikachu and battling with two game boys" thing that had to be timed just right, like Pikachu had to be knocking out the other Pokemon... and eventually the lag would be such that Pikachu would be knocking out Pokemon on one screen, and on the other screen, all the Pokemon were knocked out... and voila, a glitch Pokemon would appear. One time it took on the appearance of literally a golden Butterfree. I was so souped, I posted it online all over the place.

Remember the "third Hitmon" glitches (haha, they came out with Hitmontop, anyway), being able to morph Bill into an Eevee, and, of course... the only one that was really real in the end...

Oh yeah, Missingno. Funny story about that. Now I remember the main person who told me about alot of the fake cheats I had heard. It was someone my mom used to watch back when she ran a daycare business out of our house. He was the one who first told me about Mewtwo, and when I saw it sitting in the cave with my own eyes, I started to believe everything he said about Mew. After hearing him say, "oh that's now how you get Mew, this is how you do it" time after time, I realized how much BS I was being fed. Then he told me about Missingno. Of course I didn't believe him until he showed it to me. Despite that, the only things I believed after that was the stuff written in magazines (saw how good that worked ). Eventually he traded me a sharked Mew, I guess it made up for all the fake Mew cheats he told me. But yeah, the weirdest thing I found about Missingno. was that almost everything that kid told me about it was actually true.

Oiy!! I've tried ever glitch I've heard off, and only 5/1000000000000 ever worked ^_^ Though the Mew in the truck thing was a fun one to do...Hmm, actully some glitches are really pointless, like cutting down the tree or the fire pants one. I've distroyed my Blue that way..I love the Missingno. glitch!

This one glitch actully worked, but it still confuses the hell out of me.

In silver, I bred the Red Gyradose with a Blue Dito I trained while I had a Missingo. on the breach...two days later my blue blew up, but anywho -_-. I was hoping for a red Magicap foolishly, when out of my egg pops out a PURPLE DITTO! It was a darker pink, so I think it's purple. Currently, it's at level 57, knows Splash, thrash, rage and trasform. It only trasforms half the time, when it doesn't trasform it says this "SLUGGY feels ill", it gets all pixilated and doesn't trasform ^_^;...it's weird.

Hmmm… Eternally chasing after some of these rumors and glitches like pots of gold at the end of the rainbow comprises some of my fondest childhood memories. I almost got to test that old Strength/truck legend a few years, ago, but unfortunately I discovered that the cartridge I was storing Mewtwo in was struck with the second generation battery blight. I’m still looking for someone with a Mewtwo, to no avail. As far as I can recall, for that one you had to get someone to trade you a pokemon with the appropriate HM moves, get to the S.S. Anne and find the truck on the shore, push it with a Mewtwo that knew Strength, and lo and behold, there would be a key! Specifically, a key to Bill’s backyard. Bill would then allow you to traipse around his backyard, which contained, according to varying sources, the three starter pokemon, their evolved forms, the three legendary birds, and, of course, Mew. So, why did they put in that truck? It’s not like there are cars anywhere else in the game. Is it just there to drive us crazy?
Another oldie I remember is yet another way to get Mew. I’m a little hazy on the details, but I remember you had to catch a Magikarp, possibly of a certain level, leave it in the daycare until it was level 70, and then train it until it was level 71, and poof! It would evolve into a Mew! The most convincing Mew legend I remember hearing is that if you caught every pokemon and talked to the man who said to talk to him again when you finished you pokedex, he would give you one. I suspect this is false, but I am unsure. Anybody know?
Some of the best rumors started when pokemon Gold, Siver, and Crystal were announced. One of the biggest rumors was that you could acquire Togepi in G/S, which of course turned out to be true but not in the sense we had assumed. Another one that we were all agog about was that apparently, Crystal could be played on a cell phone. This one turned out to be partially true, but only in Japan.
On a slightly-related note, I want to find Missingno once again on my Blue version, and I vividly remember seeing it many a time in days of yore, but now I can’t seem to find it. Can anyone give me some clues or pointers?

Having accomplished that very feat more than once, I can say with confidence that it's false. The man just gives you a diploma. There was a rumor that he gave people a Mew in the original Japanese version, but I've heard that this is false as well.

There are various ways to encounter Missingno., but perhaps the simplest and quickest is to talk to the man in Viridian City who shows you how to catch pokémon, watch him catch a Weedle, and then Fly to Cinnabar Island and Surf up and down the island's east coast. In that area you'll encounter whatever pokémon were in the last wild area you were in, and watching the Weedle capture screws up that data and makes Missingno. appear.

Heh, MISSINGNO.... There's no limit to the crazy methods I've seen to get those things, including but not limited to:

    2. In Red or Blue, go anywhere that has both wild Pokemon and Cut-able trees. Cut the tree down, then walk onto the spot where it stood, save the game, and turn it off and then back on. You should be standing ON the tree, unable to move anywhere else. Walk in all four ditections at least once, and then Fly, Dig, or Teleport to Viridian City and Surf in the water; the first Pokemon to appear will be a MISSINGNO..

    3. In Red, Blue, or Yellow, obtain the Poke Flute, go find Snorlax, and wake it up. After battling or catching it, walk to where it was sitting and save; when 'SAVING... DON'T TURN OFF THE PO' is on the screen, turn the game off, then back on. If timed correctly, the Snorlax will seem to be gone; take a step to the left (if on Route 11) or right (on Route 16), turn around, and press (A); the Poke Flute and grumpy Snorlax text will come up, but the Pokemon you battle will be a MISSINGNO..

    4. In Red or Blue, defeat the Elite Four without catching or battling Articuno, Zapdos, or Moltres, and then catch Mewtwo in the Unknown Dungeon. After you catch it, battle Zapdos, then catch Moltres, and then go stand in front of Articuno, save, talk to Articuno, and as the screen goes black before the battle, turn the game off and then on; talk to Articuno again, battle or catch it, and then turn the game off and on again; you should still have a saved game from before Articuno, but it'll be gone; talk to the spot where it stood, and you'll hear Articuno's cry and then battle MISSINGNO..

    5. In Green, catch all 149 Pokemon, then catch Mewtwo last, and then go talk to the guy in Celadon City who gives you a Diploma. After that, obtain a Mew and go back to him with it at the front of your party; talk to him 5 times, and eventually he'll tell you to go back to where you caught your 150th Pokemon and see if anything new has appeared. Go back to where Mewtwo stood in the Unknown Dungeon, stand in Mewtwo's spot, face forward, and press (A); you'll hear a cry that none of the original 151 Pokemon sounds like and enter a battle with - you guessed it - MISSINGNO..

And now, the most ridiculous MISSINGNO. glitch I've ever heard...

    6. In Red, Blue, Green, or Yellow, battle the Elite Four, catch every Pokemon, get the Diploma, obtain a Mew, and go back and defeat the Elite Four again; you'll restart in your room in Pallet Town, as usual; without moving, save the game until 'SAVING... DON'T TURN OFF THE PO' is on the screen, then turn the game off and on again. After that, take a single step in any direction, save again, and when 'SAVING... DON'T TURN OFF THE PO' is on the screen, turn the game off and then on again, and start playing. There will be two of you in the room! You'll control only the new player; the old one will stay in your room. Go back and defeat the Elite Four one more time, and you'll restart the game in your room again afterwards. Take a step, and the other you will be gone. As fast as you can, leave your house, Fly to Cerulean, Bicycle to the shore of Route 24, Surf to the Unknown Cave, and Bicycle through Unknown Cave without battling any Pokemon (A team of LV100 Pokemon as many Max Repels as you can carry helps with this task.); if you went fast enough, you'll find the other you standing at the very back of the Dungeon, behind where Mewtwo stood. Go talk to him, and he'll tell you that he is the part of you that is a winner and that you will never win another battle without him. Then, he will spin around, as though with an Escape Rope, and disappear. Use an Escape Rope of your own, Fly to the Pokemon League, and defeat the Elite Four one last time; the Champion will be the other you, who battles you with a LV100 team of (in this order) Mewtwo, Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Mew, and your starting Pokemon. They have these moves:

    MEWTWO
    -Psychic
    -Recover
    -Amnesia
    -Mega Punch

    ARTICUNO
    -Ice Beam
    -Bubblebeam
    -Blizzard
    -Hyper Beam

    ZAPDOS
    -Thunderbolt
    -Drill Peck
    -Thunder
    -Hyper Beam

    MOLTRES
    -Fire Spin
    -Swift
    -Fire Blast
    -Hyper Beam

    MEW
    -Transform
    -Mimic
    -Metronome
    -Rest

    VENUSAUR/CHARIZARD/BLASTOISE
    -Earthquake
    -Sleep Powder/Swords Dance/Withdraw
    -Toxic/Slash/Seismic Toss
    -Solarbeam/Fire Blast/Hydro Pump

Defeat this guy, and he'll vanish; in his place will be a MISSINGNO. that DOESN'T glitch your game. Battle it, catch it, and... uh... enjoy.

OK, I hate to bump my own thread from months ago, but I was reading through this again and it reminded me of a post I made over at Bulbagarden and I managed to dig it up. It was in response to a thread about the side doors in Backlot's mansion in DP.

Here's what you do: Keep touching the statue until the guard yells at you and calls in for backup, the backup will be the two maids guarding the side doors, so now you can go through them! The one on the left leads to Bill's backyard where you can catch all twelve starters. If you go inside Bill's house he will just send you back to Sinnoh since Kanto isn't supposed to be in this game, but if you go there with a Venusaur and Blastoise in your party he'll put them in his teleportation machine and combine them into Venustoise which he'll give to you! If you go back into his house with Venustoise in your party he'll take you to the Unknown Dungeon where you can catch Mewtwo. After you catch Mewtwo you can keep going back, but instead of Mewtwo, you'll find Missingno. and when you catch it it will be holding the stone that evolves all the final evolutions of the starters! The door on the right goes to a small field with one house. Inside is a guy who wants you to trade him a Raichu for his Electrode. Do the trade and he'll tell you Raichu went away and evolved! To get the evolved form of Raichu (known as Godchu) go to the guy you traded Raichu to and make sure you have a Lv 100 Staraptor in your party. He'll fly you to an island in Vermilion Harbor where you can catch Godchu. Surf north until you get to land and you'll see a truck, use strength on it and you'll battle Mew. Catch Mew and it will be holding the Three Stone, use the Three Stone on Mewtwo to evolve it into Mewthree! Now, if you have done all that, go and beat the elite four 100 times with Mewthree, Venustoise, and Godchu in your party, afterwards, Professor Oak will show up and give you, you guessed it, Togepi!!! Oh, but don't go back in the mansion afterwards or Mr. Backlot will zap you with a bolt of lightning and you'll lose all your hearts, oh wait wrong game...

OK, maybe not, but it was still fun coming up with that

Basically all that stuff is just thrown in to make players speculate, and people with too much free time on their hands come up with stuff like that.
