I personally don't know a whole lot about the TCG, but I'm pretty sure some of the old cards have been banned, so you might be able to use some of them, just not all. If you mean just for casual play though, the new cards seem to be pretty compatible with the old ones, although many of the new cards seem to be more powerful than the old ones.

Yes you can. Actually, there's no reason why you can't, since in the end they're still pokemon cards all the same.
The reason Jeff says the old cards are banned is because of tournament formats. Current PUSA changes the format every year, restricted to only the newest sets.
Note: this is ONLY for OFFICIAL tournaments. Otherwise, it's pretty much house rules, depends on who you play with.
yes, you're allowed to mix old Pkmn cards with new. i should know, cuz i mixed my old cards with new ones i got. also, if you're not sure, make a deck with old and new cards and post it. i did, and they said i can make a deck like that.
