Fanfic Memories

I'm feeling really nostalgic at the moment. Especially after talking to Gav online until like 4am yesterday. Eugh I'm going to regret that later.

But anyway, we were talking about the old times, like when the site was still up, when we wer only kids, and when fanfic was booming and we were just remeniscing on some old memories. And yeah, thought it'd be cool to share them.

What are your fanfic memories?


Gosh I was saying to Gav about how I remember reading fanfics when they used to be rated and put on the main website. And that's how I got into the forums because I wanted to be a rater etc. Haha I remember reading some really cool fics up on the main site.

And I remember one of the first fics I read on this forum was Captain Pringle's "Michael's Pokemon Journey". And then I became like best friends with CP. Good times

And when the fanfic forum was littered with chain fics and smilie fics. Oh goodness.

Yes I remember fanfic ratings on the main website. And the horror of 30 or so fanfics every day in my email account. My god were most of them awful. Having to read those and then consider some type of rating for them. Most of them warranted deletion but that would have been too mean. I didn't even read some of them to be perfectly honest. If they looked long I gave them a higher rating. Fanfic ratings were interesting but particularly time consuming.

Haha I think I sent you a few of my stories to be rated as well. Gosh, that was so long ago.

I remember when there were so many stories, that sometimes you'd have to search on page 2 to find yours.

I sent one of my first pieces in to be rated, I don't remember who received it. But it was terrible. I was only 12 or 12 at the time. I pity whoever had to read it/pretend to read it.

Is it just my memory playing up, or was there actually the option for people submitting their fics to choose which rater they wanted to rate their fic?

Hehe Tara I can't believe you were up so early. I slept in until about 11 or 12 and then decided to finish studying for my exam, which is in about 2 and a half hours.

I also fondly remember those really active days. It wasn't just the fics that were around, it was the sheer number of active people, and the sense of hustle and bustle. And it wasn't a hassle to post a reply, whereas now it seems to take a gargantuan effort. I think the fact that we were all brought together by pokemon kind of helped, because we were all interested in each other's stories, whereas these days there's more of a spread of original fiction and other fandoms.

I want the old days back! Sigh. Let's revive 'em.

I remember when I first joined, BBP and Mew_ryuu were mods of fanfic. I don't remember who else. firepokemon, were you ever a mod of fanfic? My memory is hazy

It changed a lot, but I remember BBP, mew_ryuu, dratini_haunter13 and Misty_Rocks were the four mods at one point.

Though there were lots of changes around then.

Oh I remember those days too! When no one even knew about RPGs and when the site had that rating system. I remember being so happy/proud when I became a rater and got to rate other people's fan fiction works.

I laugh about it now though, because I remember my first story I submitted and how bad it was!! The nice thing though is we were all around the same age, so it didn't really matter. Now if I were to submit the same quality... oh boy... xD xD

Yes Gavin you could choose who rated your fanfic.

Ginger Cat and Chicken Winger Mew were the first fanfic mods after the originals. When I speak of originals. These are the people mods before the boards opened publicly. They were PokeMaster Mike and Shadow_trainer??? Blitzzzzzzz of course was the next person she came June or July. I think there may have been the RPG around then as well. BBP started there and eventually him and Ginger Cat swapped. Chicken Winger Mew didn't last for long. Eventually I suspect it would have been Timarelay, Big Bad Pokemon, Blitzzzzzzz and dratinihaunter.

Ever read "The Emerald League"? That story became a forum all to itself. It ended up being closed after... remind me again, I think 1000 posts? By Damian SilverBlade. Most of the thread was readers and writer chatting about the latest chapter than actual threads being posted.
It had some good battling and mythology, though.

The story/ies I remember most fondly are those by V.o.t.m. (Vaporeon of the Mist) and NewMew/Shadowed Mewtwo. They were about a whole society of Mewtwos, Mewtwo/Pokémon and Mewtwo/Human crossbreds.
Darkmyuu's (killer Umbreon/Mewtwos)were awesome - horrific, but awesome!
And then there was Mewtwopia, the city of Mewtwos!

Ah, and then there was the time I stept on a bus with OzAndrew, and took part in a chain fic! And in those time I was closely following Lisa the Legend, which has since apparently become non-Pokémon related.

TEL was awesome. I don't know why I loved it so much - there wasn't inherently anything brilliant about it, at least from a writery perspective, but it was just such an engaging story and so much fun. There was such a palpable sense of adventure to it. In many regards, it was like the ultimate trainer fic. At least for me.

And the chain fic - that was the best fun! Was that in 2002ish? God, it felt like practically everyone was involved in it. It's a shame the latest one didn't take off at all.

There are still pokemon in LTL. Lurking around doing people's fighting for them. Sigh.

Now, smilie fics, they were fun as. There used to be tonnes of them. My favourite was Living in Pichu's House. The characters of LiPH were insane, but so entertaining.

are you SERIOUS? Lol I read over the old smilie fics, and I am like "gosh I am so ashamed I can't be a comedian." Oh goodness that was pretty embarassing. I stole most of my jokes from Seinfeld episodes and other sitcoms. ahhhhhhh I'm such a loser. I'd love to write another smilie fic. gosh those were the days. I should totally write one.
