There is a set of stairs in the corner leading downward. Everything's covered in dust; evidently, it's been a while since Team Rocket has set foot in their old hideout...

Ahh, Celadon City. Known to some as City of the Rainbow’s Colours, Celadon sits right smack-dab in the middle of the Kanto region. It sports a wicked gambling scene, a Grass-type gym, a bajillion-story shopping center and oodles of other attractions! That’s why we’ll be taking a teleportation tour of Celadon City today, with our two competitors—MLG and Ayeun—beginning their fray in the long-abandoned hideout of the nefarious Team Rocket.

I select their first Pokemon and pit MLG’s brawny Celfable Ai against Ayeun’s hot-as-heck Magby. This battle is on!

Ai is the first to act. She scrunches up her fists and, with a squeak for dramatic effect, emits a crackling wave of electric current that sweeps across the room. Magby is caught in the attack and finds her muscles stiffening as a result. Oh my. Still, that’s not going to stop this little hothead from spewing out a dark plume of smoke that leaves soot in Ai’s eyes.

Thinking cleverly, Ai prepares to douse this Fire-type with a surge of chilly water. However, Magby is quick to react and erects an invisible barrier. The water simply runs off Magby’s protection and splashes uselessly to the floor tiles. Aw man, now someone’s gonna have to clean that up, guys…

Ai looks seriously miffed that her Water Pulse didn’t go as planned. As such, she bounces forward and smokes Magby with a wicked left-hook that saps the fiery ducky thing of a few hit points and transfers them to the perfectly healthy Ai. In retaliation, Magby unleashes a beam of flickering light that boggles Ai’s mind and leaves the Clefable unable to tell up from down. Good luck with that one.

The round begins as Ai manages to again overcome her Confusion and throws up a white shroud of energy. Concealed in her protection, the Clefable simply smiles as Magby breathes red-gold embers her way. The Will-O-Wisp is rendered ineffective.

Light begins to stream from Ai’s fingertips as she readies herself for a Flash. Now, how did that move go again? Puzzled, Ai scratches her head and tries to remember how to execute that silly move as her fingers again go dim. Not happening. Gleefully taking advantage of her foe’s misfortunes, Magby struts up and clobbers Ai with a wicked DynamicPunch. Since Ai’s mind is already boggled, the move carries no added effect.

With a strangled cry, Ai begins to pirouette around the room. Though one might write this funny dance off as another symptom of her confusion, a thunderclap announces the sudden arrival of a storm—outside, that is. Thank goodness we’re safe down here away from the rain, or else we might get drenched! Thrilled that she has a free swing at her opponent, Magby prepares to strike with a blistering Heat Wave, but finds her muscles locking up instead. Laaame.

Ai views the world with sudden clarity. At least she seems to have gotten over the Confusion.

With her head back in the match, Ai draws some water into her throat and prepares to fire it at the Magby. However, the soot left in her eyes by that Smokescreen a few rounds ago causes them to sting. She tries to shoot off the Water Pulse anyway, but the move ends up going wide to strike one of the tables. Wasting no time at all, Magby skips toward Ai to deal a crippling DynamicPunch… but her muscles say otherwise. She cramps up.

My, what an eventful turn.

The Clefable rubs at her eyes a little bit and decides to give the Water Pulse another go. She shoots of a spiraling cascade that succesfully strikes Magby right in the gut, causing the fiery duckling to fall down on his bottom. He won’t be beaten so easily, however! Leaping to his feet, Magby starts swinging his fists wildly at Ai. For some reason, his Paralysis lends a little added potency to the attack.

Rinse and repeat, right? These fighters certainly seem to think so and exchange another Water Pulse with a Facade. The two moves collide, knocking Ai and Magby away from one another. However, while Ai gets up to her feet, Magby stays down. She looks a little dizzy.

Suddenly, crackling white energy surrounds the five of us as we vanish from the Rocket Hideout. Our feet again touch solid ground as the teleportation comes to an end, and we look around to see that we are now in a large, grassy arena. Various trees, bushes and other sorts of florae riddle the battlefield and climb high to the ceiling.

As the battlers peer around their new surroundings and try to acclimatize to the sudden warp in location, Ai sings the few notes of a dulcet tune. The sweet lullaby spills out over Celadon Gym and—gosh, anyone else feeling a little drowsy? Maybe I should lie down and nap for just a couple of—

No! They need me to ref, darn it! Magby doesn’t share my resolve, however, and the little flaming ducky finds her eyelids growing slowly heavier. Soon, Magby is down for the count, snoring for everyone to hear. Bummer.

While Magby explores the world behind her eyelids, Ai gleefully takes the moment to compose herself. She closes her eyes, slows her breathing and hums softly to herself. This zen mumbo-jumbo lasts for just a few moments and, when Ai finally opens her eyes once again, she feels renewed confidence in her battling abilities.

As Magby lies there helplessly, there’s nothing she can do to stop Ai from creeping up. The Clefable has all the time in the world to charge up the move and, after doing so, she unleashes a powerful Focus Punch at Ai. If there were any reason in the world, you'd think the massive blow would perhaps rouse the slumbering Magby, but no dice. The Fire-type just keeps snoring away. Finally, though there's really no practical way to observe this, Magby's calm sleep makes me think she's won the battle against her Confusion.

Once again, Ai closes her eyes and pushes every little distraction right out of her skull. Her moment of meditation again soothes her waters and enhances her stats. Magby, still snoring away, suddenly starts babbling in his sleep. Then, without warning or explanation, crackling gold flames issue from his mouth and tear across the battlefield before singeing Ai. Careful, bud! I somehow doubt Erika would be thrilled if we started a friggin’ forest fire in her absence.

Hacking up some water out of her gut, Ai unleashes a spiraling Water Pulse that strikes the Live Coal Pokemon and causes a sizzling swell of steam. The water seems to do the trick as Magby hops to his feet, blinking vigorously. She’s awake! With renewed enthusiasm, Magby hops toward her foe and strikes with another powerful punching attack that, though inaccurate, still succeeds in clobbering the tubby little marshmallow. Ai tilts her head. Woah, guys… why does everything look so funny?

While Ai is trying to keep herself upright, Magby creates a rapid red blur as she hastens toward her foe at an insane speed. She strikes Ai with another powerful punch which knocks the Clefable down on her bottom. Ai then briefly considers attacking Magby with another Water Pulse, but ultimately decides her time is better spent playing with a dandelion. Hrm… that’s, uh, quite a unique strategy you have there…

Magby grins. Yay for winning! The chipper fire duck couldn’t by happier by the battle so far and sprints toward Ai to give the Clefable a celebratory punch to the face. Ai suppresses her anger by assuming a meditative stance and lets her rage flow out of her body. Just like that, she feels the Confusion grow weak before dying away. Wow, this New Age stuff really works!

With her head back in the game, Ai spins on the spot and creates three identical doppelgangers to do her bidding. The quartet of Clefables stare down Magby, who now has to resort to Eeny Meeny Miney Mo. Eeny Meeny Miney Mo, catch a Growlithe by the toe… Yeah, okay, the one on the right. Magby breaks out into a sprint and flails her arms at her target, which promptly vanishes on the spot. Just a clone.

Magby scowls. Curse you, Eeny Meeny Miney Mo!

Once again, Ai hacks up some water into her mouth and sprays it in a spiraling blast at Magby. Tiny droplets splash off and squirt the flowers. Aww, Erika will be pleased. Magby shakes off that powerful blow and tries to reciprocate, but her muscles say otherwise. Okay, Paralysis, we get it. This is starting to get old.

Then, right on time, the teleportation kicks in and with a whoosh we’re gone from Celadon Gym. Farewell! Our new location is a little on the cramped side and filled with people who all rush against the walls to make room for us. A set of stairs occupies one side of the room while a table sits on the other. A PC sits in the corner beside a long front corner, behind which stands a nurse and her Chansey. Yeah, uh, I really don’t think we’re supposed to battle in a Pokemon Center.

But you know what? We’re going to anyway!

The ability to realize the value of money in a society is dictated by the culture one experiences growing up. If you live in a culture where money is merely a small amount of your daily like (agrarian, hunter-gatherer) you really have very little need for the accumulation of numerical data :O If you live and undergo a culture where glitz, glamour ad entertainment rule your senses, then accounting is necessary since you'd probably use money in a way to ensure your livelihood within that culture, and you'd prolly want to maximize the effectiveness of every dollar while releasing yourself of frivolous things that would otherwise put a drain on your income.

The crowd lets out a gasp as Ai lets loose her latest Water Pulse. Dude, you’ll destroy the equipment! Ai doesn’t seem to care, though Magby does—quite a bit, actually. The move connects with a painful sizzle and knocks Magby down to the ground. This little guy is a trooper, however, and is back on his feet in a jiffy. He rushes at Ai with yet another powerful flailing move. The clone who suffers the brute of the attack vanishes on the spot.

Ayeun’s impressive Flygon takes to the field as a hush descends over the Pokemon Center. Yeah, Flygons just so happen to command mad respect like that. Without any trace of fear in the slightest, the Mystic Pokemon marches over and clubs Ai over the head with her forearm. Clefable’s head spins from that move, but she pulls it together enough to Sing a few notes of some quiet, dulcet tune.

Poor Flygon doesn’t stand a chance.

As Flygon catches some z’s, Ai chipperly commands a raging Blizzard to come bursting through the door and into the Pokemon Center. Hey, don’t you know it’s May? Apparently not, as the ice-cold move causes all of us inside to shiver, but none more than Flygon whose double weakness to Ice-type attacks has her hugging herself for warmth in her sleep. Between Flygon’s double weakness to Ice and Ai’s thrice-boosted Special Attack, the strength of the move is near-devastating.

In her sleep, Flygon moves about as if cutting something furiously, but, alas, it’s just a dream. What’s not a dream is the ferocious ice storm that Ai calls up once more. As eddies of snow and frigid gusts enter the Pokemon Center, it becomes clear that Flygon is going to have her work cut out for her… when she wakes up, that is.

Flygon continues snoozing away and, just when you start to think there’s no hope for the big ol’ bug, she suddenly starts babbling in her sleep. Without warning, Flygon hops to her feet and loosens fiery ideogram upon Ai. The blast slams into the Clefable and knocks the pretty pink marshmallow off her feet onto her bottom. Hey, that hurt! Panting from exhaustion, Ai slowly gets back on her feet before commanding yet another ferocious Blizzard to come gusting inside. The contained storm rages against Ai who can’t seem to be stirred from her slumbers.

Once again, Flygon babbles a bit and this time, the Pokemon Center begins shaking wildly as the earth beneath the building is churned about. Ai stumbles and slams into a wall as a result of the attack. Still, the Clefable manages to climb back to her feet and call upon another Blizzard to do her bidding.

Flygon: <-22 HP; -7 EP>

As the cold seeps into the building, it seems to be enough to finally rouse Flygon from her sleep. Huzzah! Without missing a beat, she buzzes as she approaches Clefable and slices her up with wicked claws.

And after a dominating performance, Ai is finally brought down.

MLG's next Pokemon will be Toph, the touch, his shiny male Aggron.

With that, we find ourselves teleporting once more. We instantaneously leave the Pokemon Center behind and then pause to survey our new surroundings. A breeze wafts from way up here and it becomes apparent that we're... high. Very, very high. Oh boy. Welcome to the rooftop of the Celadon Department Store!
