Once again, I find myself chillin’ in a certain pagoda tucked away in the most treacherous peaks of all of TPM ASB. Here, a lowly challenger dares enter these ancient halls to do battle with the most fiercest ninja sword guy around… Gym Leader DarkestLight! Encircled by various suits of armour, the two trainers incline their heads and prepare to do battle. Let’s begin!

Red light dazzles our eyes as the trainers release. The Gym Leader has opted for a meditating bladed warrior while Chaos, on the other hand, calls upon his beloved Springie to once again help him out in another Gym match.

Being of equal agility, the two Pokemon issue attacks in unison. Springie tosses a Shadow Ball at Ha-ohmaru while the Gallade, on the other hand, begins to rub his bladed forearms together violently. The action creates no discernible noise—for anyone but Springie, that is. The Grumpig claps her little arms over her ears and begins oinking in distress. Makeitstop! Makeitstop!

Ha-ohmaru: <-12 HP; -5 EP>
Springie: <-6 HP; -6 EP>

Ha-ohmaru resumes creating that bizarre Synchronoise while Springie tosses another inky ball of despair. One attack seems to be doing a fair bit more damage than the other.

The Pokemon keep at it, exchanging yet another Synchronoise for another Shadow Ball. Ha-ohmaru loses his footing to the Ghost-type attack, stumbling backward into the Shiroi Kikoutei suit of armour. Damn, who put that there?

Well, after that round of synchronizes, I wasn't sure if we were supposed to be tickling our opponents or not, but it just didn't feel right. So, I went for dishing out the pain.

So, according to veekun, resistances/weaknesses don't come into play for counter.

That applies to the games, not ASB. Here, the resistances/weaknesses are factored in, which is why Counter's Movelist entry specifically says the damage dealt is of the Fighting element.

As the next round begins, DL’s Gallade seems to want to do a little more damage after those piddly Synchronoises. His appendages glow black and he lets out some nonsensical battle cry as he bounds toward Springie, raking his Dark-infused blades across piggy’s chest. Ouch! However, with alarmingly good dexterity, Springie snatches hold of Ha-ohmaru and brings the attack to an end. She lets go and sends Ha-ohmaru into a beam; however, the Pokemon’s mental fortitude keeps the physical damage low.

Springie: <-9 HP; -8 EP>

Ha-ohmaru’s blades glow green this times as he rakes them in an X-formation across the wigglying hunk of back bacon. Oinking furiously, Springie repeats her Counter strategy and tosses the Gallade into one of the suits of armour.

Springie: <-10 HP; -8 EP>

And, again: Night Slash goes up against Counter as Ha-ohmaru cuts loose with the Dark-type move while Springie snatches onto her opponent and brings him slamming against the ground. Once again, the attack does less than she expected. She oinks in annoyance.

With Springie rockin’ a modest lead, the oinker hurls another swirling black ball at Ha-ohmaru. As the attack hurdles through the air, Ha-ohmaru swishes his arms ominously and mutters something unintelligible. Whatever it was, it does the trick: though Ha-ohmaru is still hit in the gut by piggy’s attack and loses a bit of fortitude in the process, a strange shadow passes over the swine. Curious.

Ha-ohmaru: <-12 HP; -4 EP; -1 SpD>
Springie: <-6 EP; Shadow Ball>

Springie makes a throwing motion as though playing a game of mime baseball, but the gesture has no effect. He peers at his paws in confusion. Where’s all the Shadow Balls at? As though to answer that question, Ha-ohmaru whips a Shadow Ball of his own at Springie for considerable damage. Grimacing, Springie uses her mental prowess to crush Ha-ohmaru against the ground. Nummy Gallade pancakes, anyone?

Ha-ohmaru: <-13 HP; -6 EP>
Springie: <-12 HP; -7 EP>

Springie repeats the attack, this time tossing Ha-ohmaru like a ragdoll up to the ceiling only to let him fall face-first back to the ground. Ouch. The attack brings Ha-ohmaru within an inch of defeat, but he manages to just barely hold on and keeps battling. Closing his eyes, the weary fighter establishes a mental link with Springie. Some of his scuffs and scrapes vanish while Springie feels a wave of exhaustion wash over her body.

Things seem to be looking up for Ha-ohmaru. The Gallade whips another Shadow Ball at Springie, which knocks the swine onto her bottom and chips away at her defences. Suddenly, a silver corona surrounds her body and she begins oinking loudly and with fury. A massive beam of pink energy erupts from her forehead gems, hitting Ha-ohmaru for major damage. He’s tossed against one of the vertical beams and falls to the ground without moving.

And, miraculously, he rises. Say wha?

Springie: <-10 HP; -8 EP; -1 SpD>

Quivering with exhaustion, Ha-ohmaru is blanketed by a cloak of shadows and twists, departing into thin air. Springie blinks, alarmed by this bit of hocus pocus. Suddenly, her opponent returns behind her and lashes out with spectral energy. Springie is sent stumbling foreword, but maintains composure enough to deal one final Psychic.

Ha-ohmaru is sent flying into another suit of armour, crumpling into a heap at its base. This time, he doesn’t get back up.

Yeah, I realized Grumpig was one of those Counter/Mirror Coat folk early on-so anything you did was covered by that Counter/Mirror Coat/Snatch/Magic Coat bull you pulled. But, Grumpig only has 7 left, so I'm not really worried about it.

Poor Springie appears to be circling the drain as the Gym Leader’s next selection, a verdant reptile creature, steps onto the field and begins hammering his chest with passion. A dual beam of contrasting red and green energy bursts out of Springie's forehead, but the new guy on the block merely zips out of the attack’s path. Easy-peasy!

Springie concentrates and focuses her gaze on her opponent, vowing not to miss this time. However, before she can even launch her attack, Anubis tears toward her and hacks and slashes with those leafy blades of his. Diced ham, anyone?

And with that, little Springie will spring no more. She falls.

Chaos releases his next Pokemon now that Springie is out of commission. Crimson light radiates around us as a steely insectoid fighter takes to the field. Since Slasher has already proven himself to be a veritable Grass-crusher, he flexes those pincers of his confidently as he peers upon his opponent.

All goes white momentarily as Anubis and Slasher Safeguard themselves from harmful statuses. Purdy.

Slasher: <-4 EP; Sgd>

Procuring a blade of grass seemingly out of nowhere, Anubis places it between his thumbs and blows. A strident noise fills the arena and begins to lull all who hear it save for Slasher. The Scizor shrugs, undaunted by this little bit of music, and raises his pincers in a telling X-formation. With twin swipes, he begins to make chop suey out of his poor opponent.

Slasher: <-6 EP>

Anubis keeps up the music with some more music. Undaunted, Slasher also repeats his previous attack to much more success than what his opponent is currently experiencing.
