Sailor Moon to make a return!!

Yes!!
Sailor Moon will be remade starting next summer into a new anime that's based much more closely on the manga story.

As someone who first encountered anime through subtitles of Sailor Moon, I'm pretty excited. According to the online interviews (there's a bunch just google it), this story will have grown up along with the fanbase--which means it'll probably be fast-paced, have quite a bit more blood 'n' guts, and a real tearjerker.

However I'm kind of skeptical. Do we really need a re-telling of Sailor Moon when most dedicated Moonies have already sought out/read the manga? The series, after all, is meant to cater to the older fanbase.

Hmm. What are your thoughts?

I think it could be cool, especially if it has grown up with the fanbase. And especially if they don't sanitise the hell out of it for the English dub again ...

YES!!! I almost had a heart attack, not really, but I really felt something deep inside when I saw this topic. I love Sailor Moon and this really is something I was looking for.

Already some of my prayers were answered last week when I opened Japanpop, a Finnish magazine conserving Japanese pop culture and saw this advertisement:



The picture shows that the manga has finally been re-printed. Previously whenever I asked for Sailor Moon in Fantasiapelit, they said only random volumes had been found sometimes but now they seem to have the entire series, and I got that confirmed when I went to a book shop yesterday.

I wonder what king of music will this 'remake' have, I loved the original already.

Would be interesting. I'm not a "Moonie" or anything, myself, but it was one of my first animes, so I might watch it out of nostalgia's sake and see if it's any good on its own or if they just... sorta ruined it like they did with the HxH remake.

Giang Moonie here. I was estatic when this was announced! I still am, even though I own all the manga! Im so ready to see it again, and eff americas dub...except the first 2 seasons cause holy shit they played rocking ass music during the ruby fight!

xD Eff America's dubs, anyway. I much prefer to watch anime subbed. It loses too much of itself to censors and dumbing things down to attract younger audiences unless they get a slot in Adult Swim. And even then... I don't know. I'm just gonna watch it with subs.

Well, considering the ones who pretty much made the dubs of the first two seasons a total mess are out of the picture (the dubs for S and SS were a lot better by comparison, despite the hilariously failed attempt to cover Uranus and Neptune's relationship up), I'd say things would be looking fairly good for the US version. Bonus points since Adult Swim is now Toonami (at least, the Saturday night block with all the anime), so it's almost like nostalgia fest. Now if only we could get Turn-A or ZZ Gundam in there to REALLY make it feel like old times...

For the record, I am by far not a Moonie, but Sailor Moon was one of the first anime I remember watching and I thought it was fairly cool, even if the leads were all cute girls. It'll be nice to see what this version looks like in comparison to the original run of the anime (which I hope also sees some attention with this revival). The only thing that's going to annoy me is I'm going to have to watch Uranus and Neptune be idiots again (oh how easy the final battle in that arc probably would have been if the two of them had just let Hotaru henshin when it was revealed she was Sailor Saturn, then Mistress Nine is probably exorcised right there and a lot of that crap doesn't happen)

I really wonder what kind of revitalizing this will be. Instead of rising the bath water so that Usagi's breasts doesn't show up and 'embellishing' the transformation scenes like in the American dub we here in Finland had to wait for 2002 to see an import of the Swedish version from the last millenium. But Zoisite was made female and the Swedish voice actors had refused to sing. We didn't have music at all in some battle scenes, and three eppies were in Japanese because they didn't want to sing Anata No Sei Ja Nai, Eien No Merodi and the amazing Ai No Senshi.

Sounds like you had to suffer a crappy dub too (even worse than the original english dub? Is that even possible?). I'm hoping the original series winds up remastered and redubbed (you know, properly) and stuff to go with this...

As for what's going on with the revitalization, my best guess is we're going to see something kinda like FMA: Brotherhood, a version of the anime that follows the manga more closely than the original did. I don't think there's really a lot of information about what's actually going on, though.

They didn't have music at all in some scenes, which made it feel so empty. But it also made me possible to make this:



Plus, Moonlight Densetsu as the original 'battle theme' felt strange anyway.

o.O And I thought the English dubs were bad. At least we had music. I can't imagine some of the scenes without them. Sorry that they did such a poor job of it.

I wonder if they'll upgrade any of the animations or try to stay true to the original animation style... Hm. Guess we'll just have to wait and see :3 Even my boyfriend is up to giving an ep or two a watch with me xD

Heh, it seems the more you hear about the Swedish dub the more you hate it. For the record, there's no offical Finnish dub, we had the Swedish dub with subtitles on TV and three extra episodes that weren't shown in Sweden we saw in Japanese. That was a pleasant surprise. On the contrary, there IS a Finnish fandub on Youtube, but I can't even make it out so well, the dubbing reminds me of Sailor Mercury in Sailor Moon Abridged lol

I became a big fan of Sailor Moon though the dub was bad, and that just shows how good the series itself was. I did listen to Sailor Moon music from different countries though, and not only Japanese.

Sailormoon was my first anime, too! Well, Laputa (fansubbed!!) was my first true anime experience, unless the Power Rangers count.

Sailormoon is, to date, the only manga series I have ever read cover-to-cover. Even though the English rendition of the manga wasn't exactly perfect, they still kept most of the themes intact. I'm most excited to see how they handle Supers and Stars--the manga was by far superior to the anime, but this was no more evident than in these 23 or so chapters.

There were a few things that the anime definitely did better--how they handled the Outer Senshi in the final battle with Galaxia for one. In the manga, (Spoiler:) we just see Saturn get blasted into smithereens without any chance to even transform and face Galaxia, whereas the anime (Spoiler:) death of the Outer Senshi was probably the second biggest tearjerker in an anime with such a beloved main cast--next to how the DD girls tortured and killed the Inner Senshi, anyway.

However, there is something so epic about the Supers return of the Outer Senshi. (Spoiler:) They build up to the moment throughout the first several chapters, then finally they appear, transform and absolutely put the smackdown on the Amazones Quartet while Mercury, Mars, Jupiter are trapped; Minako and Artemis are about to die (and Minako can't even transform into Venus at this point), and Usagi and Mamoru are dying of an ailment causing them to hack up black blood. Presumably, Chibi-usa is (Spoiler:) boning Pegasus somewhere.

Also, we get to meet Chibi-Moon's future team of Sailor Senshi; we see Chibi-Moon actually grow up; Chibi-Moon and Tuxedo Mask aren't useless, have powers, and can hold their own in battle to the extent that they can defeat enemies on their own. Sailor Cosmos appears; Chibi-Chibi (Spoiler:) isn't just a stupid sword, but the ultimate incarnation of Sailor Moon's Sailor Crystal; and, well, probably the most impactful thing of the entire series occurs exclusively in the Stars manga, where (Spoiler:) Usagi witnesses Mamoru's murder as he is proposing to her, then completely blacks out the memory of it happening... continuing to write letters to him, and even getting responses. Then, when Jupiter and Mercury die, the Starlights beg her to realize what's happening around her, but she meanders about in denial until Galaxia kills Mars and Venus. The point where I honestly shed tears was most certainly when Usagi's sitting in class and the teacher is taking roll, calls on Minako, and Usagi has to say that she isn't here.

Also, Sailor Kakyuu. She attacks with playing cards. WIN!

And Sailor Heavymetal Papillon... such a badass.

In short, pardon all the spoilers but in all honesty, if you haven't read the manga but you enjoyed the anime to any extent, I recommend taking a read through it. Even if you only read Supers and Stars; you can probably do it in a day and really get a picture for how much more amazing Naoko Takeuchi's writing and art were than what the anime had become.

My friend would absolutely LOVE to hear that Sailor Moon is back if he would actually stop staying locked up in his rom and actually start talking to people again! Seriously, it's been like six weeks since he stopped talking to everyone and staying in his room all the time unless he needs to got to the bathroom and probably to get something to eat. He's not even talking to his grandma and he LIVES with her!
