    Default Doctor Who?

    Hail!

What's up? I'm wondering if anyone here is a fan of the sci-fi show, Doctor Who. I've been a fan for a while now since a friend of mine introduced me to the 2005 series. Eventually, I got introduced to the classic Doctors from the 1963-1989, 1996 era and got a dvd starring almost every Doctor.

I saw the season finale for the 7th season and thought it was pretty good. I'm hyped for the show's 50th anniversary special coming up in November. That should be fun.

So, anyone here a Doctor Who fan?

    Sup, Chris?

I'm a big fan, but I haven't been overly enthused about this season. I have also been disappointed with Clara as a companion (too perfect), but I have yet to watch the season finale, so I've been reserving judgment.

The Name of the Doctor was a great series finale and leads to the 50th. I have a few theories about it and it explains Clara. Everything'll make sense. =)

I certainly hope so, because so far I've seen some things that can't be explained in any way that makes sense (like computers being used to hack people, nanobots turning people into Daleks - which only seem to work within the asylum - and Clara - or an instance thereof - apparently being able to delete all digital information on the Doctor from the universe and hacking into the Daleks' minds, and most of what Moffat did with the Angels).

I generally like the show a lot. There are, however, moments like the ones I have described which make my brain twitch.

I spent the whole of the series finale staring at the TV going "whaaaaaa?". It was good, don't get me wrong, and it does explain Clara... I want to watch it again.

Computers hacking people makes perfect sense if you think of our brains as computers anyway. They are just pathways that use electro-chemical signals. I mean, there are people that literally have their brains wired to devices.

I'll admit, I knew of Doctor Who for a few years because there was a pinball machine at a now closed amusement park I worked at featuring the first seven Doctors, but I never really got into it until... well, around last Christmas. I decided to watch the Doctor Who version of A Christmas Carol on that day and since then I've been watching episodes on Netflix and where ever else I may find them. And if I can't do that, or don't want to at the moment, there's always episode recaps on TV Tropes.

Right now, I'm only watching New Who and I'm finishing up the Martha Jones era of the 10th... or 11th... It's confusing now because of the news involving The Name Of The Doctor. I will say that my favorite episodes so far are Dalek, The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, The Girl In The Fireplace, Rise Of The Cybermen/The Age Of Steel, The Shakespeare Code, Human Nature/The Family Of Blood, and Blink.

You have listed some of my favorite episodes: The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, The Girl In The Fireplace and Blink.

And the one who was with Martha was the 10th Doctor.

I've been a fan of Doctor Who for a long time. The new series has certainly been a lot of fun, but I do wish they would not make the original series and the new series not feel so cut off (like have the Doctor visit places he went in the past or something). I mean, we've had a couple of past companions appear and very briefly a past Doctor (was kinda fun seeing 5th and 10th working together), and of course a few old enemies (though it annoyed me that they kept using the alternate Cybermen from Rise/Age of Steel until recently when they finally started using the REAL ones again), but it seems like the new series just doesn't acknowledge the old one that much outside of odd references and the occasional displays of past Doctors.

And at least the Tardis is starting to look more like how it used to. That weird coral setup just did not feel like the "Old girl", nor did the console being run with random spare parts (although that was probably more the Time War's fault than The Doctor's). Hell, 10 should have felt lucky that it was 5 he crashed into. The 4th Doctor probably would have let him have it for the shape the Tardis was in (I mean, he almost had a heart attack when the port for the Key to Time's core to plug into was put on the console without him knowing).

Glad this thread is going well. I just rewatched the finale and still like it. Clara takes some getting used to. Now that she's explained, she can be a regular companion. I do wonder what's going to happen in the 50th. I know I'll get that for my 11th Doctor representative. The others I have are:

    1. Dalek Invasion of Earth. (Watch for the reason why Barbara Wright is cooler than you.)
    3. The Time Warrior (First appearance of Sarah Jane Smith.)
    4. The Pyramids of Mars (good Gothic story.)
    5. Earthshock (death of a companion.)
    7. Remembrance of the Daleks. (story rooted in the show's origin.)
    8. The tv movie.
    9. Series 1.
    10. The End of Time.

I haven't gotten serials for the second and sixth Doctors. I will get them soon. Those will probably be Tomb of the Cybermen for the Second Doctor and Vengeance on Varos for the Sixth.

I hope they include this last finale in the dvd for the 50th.

I didn't think The Pyramids of Mars was that great, but then again I watched it in extremely poor quality, so that certainly didn't help. Sarah Jane Smith is my all-time favorite companion, though.

The only Classic story I've seen so far is The Three Doctors. Not bad stuff, considering the times. From what I hear, the one really, really good Classic Doctor Who story that almost everyone says is the best is Genesis Of The Daleks.

I can't believe it's taken this long for a proper Doctor Who thread! So glad it's here. I've thought of starting one in the past but just never got around to it.

I loved the episode with Vincent Van Gogh... and Donna is by far my favorite companion, although Sarah Jane is amazing as well. I wasn't too big into Amy, who seems to be most peoples' favorite.

    This, basically.

I didn't really have an opinion on that last episode, it was extremely Moffat-y though, two things describe Moffat-y, either too much happens in too short an episode (Because he dislikes 2-parters) or nothing happens until the last five minutes of the episode. And The Name of The Doctor was an example of the latter. Don't get me wrong, Moffat has written some crackers (Empty Child/Doctor Dances, Girl in the Fireplace, Blink, Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon, The Curse of the Fatal Death), but he's written his fair share of stupid stuff too (The worst ever Doctor Who episode is, of course, Let's Kill Hitler).

I genuinely wanted to hear the actual name of the Doctor, and I really did, for a moment, think they'd actually put it in, like he'd be called something cool and Time Lordy like Rassilon, Romana or something. I was a fool to think they'd reveal anything.

I'm quite fed up of that trio of characters, Straxx, Vastra and Jenny, whom we're meant to feel something towards? Straxx is quite funny, but the other two are just boring characters I felt nothing for in A Good Man goes to War and I still feel nothing for.

I did like the premise of the episode, but I would have rather it been Clara-centred rather than Clara's origin, the big mystery of this series, explained in three minutes and then the rest was about the Doctor.

I quite like Clara as a companion, solely based on her interaction with the TARDIS.

But, yeah, Moffat doesn't seem to know how to close a series. All of his finales have either been "Meh" (The Big Bang), or absolutely terrible (The Wedding of River Song).

I won't be very happy if he Moffats up the 50th anniversary.

Most of those episodes were not written by Moffat. And yes, I agree that Let's Kill Hitler was pretty bad. But I think the worst episode so far was Asylum of the Daleks.

I'm actually glad they didn't reveal the name of the Doctor. No name they gave him could have done justice the 50 years of wondering what it is. Unless they plan to end the entire syndication by revealing his name and make it something epic and mind-boggling, like River Song.

I'm on the other side of the fence on this one as well. I like when those three pop up for an episode or two. I think if they stick to at most 2 episodes a season with that trio appearing and up the camp humor associated with them, they could be a great supporting cast. In earlier episodes, they really amped up the silly associated with them, and their misfit trio status suits their being the Doctor's friends.

Is that accurate? It's hard to believe he wrote some of the best episodes and the worst ones. Either there was some heavy editing involved, or he's the most fluctuating writer I've ever seen.

I'll have to watch the intro to those episodes again to see if that is true.

He did write them all, he's pretty inconsistent.

At the moment, my favourite writers in Doctor Who are Richard Curtis and Neil Gaiman, but Curtis only wrote 1 episode and Gaiman has only written 2.

Trust me, it's not like the old series wasn't without some serious clunkers either (Carnival of Monsters and The Leisure Hive come to mind right away). Also throughout the run there were some stories you wondered what the writers were smoking/drinking (sadly this plagued the 7th Doctor's run).

6, 7, and 8 all pretty much got screwed as far as on-screen things go. I mean, 8th Doctor only got the movie, 7th Doctor had such weird stories it was hard to take that era seriously, the 6th Doctor....where do I begin there?

And no, it's not because of the 6th Doctor's horrendous fashion style or his unstable personality. In fact, if he had been allowed to stay on, there were some plans on how the 6th Doctor would become a better Doctor along the way. Unfortunately good ol' Executive Meddling screwed that first by putting the show on a brief hiatus during his tenure (because, despite the high body count of the 5th Doctor's era, the 6th Doctor's stories tended to be the most violent of the original series, including some actions committed by the Doctor himself) and then Colin Baker got fired from the role before any repair work could be done.

However I think all three have been redeemed in other media. Just no love for them on-screen...

Well, at least the new series has acknowledged the 8th Doctor a couple of times, it just would be nice if we saw him appear in person (the 50th special would be a good chance to do that, would be nice to get as many Doctors as they can in one place), maybe even see what happened to cause the regeneration to the 9th Doctor (obviously Time War related, but it's gonna nag at the fanbase until they show it, I'm sure).

I hope you're right, Jeff. I remember Tennant saying he wasn't going to be in the 50th. Same with Billie Piper and boom they're in. We shall see.

I also have a couple theories as to who Hurt is playing in the special. There's a few going around and seem to hold a lot of water. It also sucks that Smith is leaving at the Christmas special. Mainly because he was the first doctor I watched from beginning to end.

It also sucks that the rumor about the lost episodes was found to be false. At least the animation studio is going to animate some lost episodes. This year, I believe we're getting The Tenth Planet, Ice Warriors and The Moonbase. The latter being two 2nd Doctor serials I really want to see.

I've seen an interview with Eccleston, they asked what he thought of Matt Smith's take on the Doctor, he said he doesn't watch Doctor Who! Had only seen Matt on stage! I don't think he will appear, he mentioned being typecast again.

A former actor that doesn't want to be associated with a show that's relatively popular? Where have I heard that before? (Power Rangers Lost Galaxy and Danny Slavin)

Although in due seriousness, Eccleston did a fine job during his short run and accomplished, what I believe, the basic points and aspects of the show for people who want to get into the new series. If he doesn't appear in the anniversary, it's his decision and his loss that he gets work along side other great actors. If he does, more power to him and acknowledging that typecasting isn't always a bad thing.

Just watched finale. Seemed a little forced conceptually, but mostly because it felt rushed. Also, seeing Clara twice didn't real constitute the whole 'Impossible Girl' idea in my mind. I was disappointed with the season overall and hope next season is better.

Eccleston may yet regret not wanting to be the 9th Doctor again. It has happened before: Tom Baker didn't sign on for The Five Doctors and they used old footage to fill in a couple of scenes for him, I'm pretty sure he has since said he wished he had done it.

I'd be disappointed if Eccleston doesn't turn up in the fiftieth. Even more so if the David Tennant and Billie Piper are just like flashbacks.

So today I FINALLY took the time to watch the three-part finale of the Martha Jones era as well as Voyage Of The Damned and the first three episodes with Donna as a companion.

I gotta say for the finale involving The Master... it was sort of a mess. It was an entertaining mess, yes, but it was still... jumbled and somewhat nonsensical, especially at the second half of the third part. Voyage Of The Damned: I gotta agree with Nash's review, it was confusing and probably as jumbled as the three-part Martha Jones finale. Finally, we come to Donna. I've got to admit, when I first saw her in The Runaway Bride, she didn't leave a very good first impression. Now, she's definitely redeemed herself and is an excellent travel companion.

Tennant and Smith were seen together on set and people took pics. They will be working together. As for Rose, I don't really know.

I never minded Donna. She was quirky and more down to earth than the other companions have been.

I liked Donna, mainly because there was no romantic involvement whatsoever.

I'd imagine she'd be a little miffed on the idea anyway after the way that whole fiancé situation panned out.

Geez, they need to keep the Doctors around for longer. David Tennant remains the longest-serving Doctor of the new series, since Matt Smith only lasted three seasons (Tennant had that plus the specials). Considering The Doctor only has two lives left, the next two should hopefully last a while.
